Ethnomedicinal Aspects Of Plants Used As Spices And Condiments In The Niger Delta Area Of Nigeria, B. C. Ndukwu, N. B. Ben-Nwadibia

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The ethnomedicinal applications of the plant species used primarily as spices and condiments among the indigenous peoples of the Niger Delta area of Nigeria were examined. A total of 24 species belonging to 10 different families were found to have varying applications in ethnobotany and ethnomedicine. The studies indicate that the indigenous people have also developed different methods for collecting, processing, using and conserving these valuable plants and/or their products. The contributions of this study towards the understanding, documentation and safeguarding of indigenous knowledge and use of plants are discussed.

香港文學電影片目, Ping Kwan Leung, Shuk Han, Mary Wong

嶺南大學人文學科研究中心叢書 Centre for Humanities Research : Book Publications

Reilly Center Louisiana Surveys

Prior to the hurricanes in the second half of 2005, the 2005 Louisiana Survey revealed a slight uptick in residents who expressed the opinion that the state was heading in the right direction. In addition to this finding, the Survey also examined:

  • a rise in economic confidence among residents
  • grades for various areas of state government services
  • property taxes, homestead exemption, and the Stelly Plan
  • perceptions of waste in state government
  • economic development and Louisiana's image
  • healthcare and economic development incentives
  • perceptions of corruption

LSU AgCenter Research Information Sheets

Winter vegetation common to northeast Louisiana ranges from easy-to-control weeds, such as annual bluegrass and common chickweed, to difficult-to-control species, such as curly dock and ryegrass. This publication includes information on proper weed identification and herbicide selection, the keys to a successful preplant, burndown weed control program.

Results are reported from the complete salt phase of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory experiment in which NaCl was dissolved in the H22O ("D2O") target. The addition of salt enhanced the signal from neutron capture as compared to the pure D2O detector. By making a statistical separation of charged-current events from other types based on event-isotropy criteria, the effective electron recoil energy spectrum has been extracted. In units of 106cm-2s-1, the total flux of active-flavor neutrinos from B8 decay in the Sun is found to be 4.94-0.21+0.21(stat)-0.34+0.38(syst) and the integral flux of electron neutrinos for an undistorted B8 spectrum is 1.68-0.06+0.06(stat)-0. …

Minnesota: Leading The Way On Canadian Prescription Medicine Importation, Kevin Goodno, Karen Janisch Jan 2005

Minnesota: Leading The Way On Canadian Prescription Medicine Importation, Kevin Goodno, Karen Janisch

William Mitchell Law Review

In the United States, about $160 billion is spent on prescription medicines each year, with Minnesotans spending about $3 billion. The costs of prescription medicines receive so much attention in large part because, although prescription medicine costs constitute only 10.5% of total health care spending, they account for 23% of the total out-of-pocket costs that people incur when purchasing health care. Minnesota has been a leader in controlling prescription medicine costs. It has aggressively used purchasing pools when possible, and encouraged the use of lower cost, generic prescription medicines when appropriate. Even with these efforts to control costs, prescription medicines …

Off-Label Use And The Medical Negligence Standard Under Minnesota Law, Cynthia A. Moyer Jan 2005

Off-Label Use And The Medical Negligence Standard Under Minnesota Law, Cynthia A. Moyer

William Mitchell Law Review

Who decides whether a drug can be used off-label and under what circumstances? If a physician decides to prescribe a drug off-label, what legal issues, if any, should the physician be aware of? With the increased practice of prescribing drugs for off-label use, coupled with a somewhat dated and incomplete medical negligence standard in Minnesota, the intersection of the off-label use doctrine with Minnesota’s medical negligence standard is ripe for review. This article examines the off-label use doctrine and the medical negligence standard under Minnesota law. First, the article examines what the phrase “off-label use” means. Next, the article explores …

Role Of The Posterior Vacuole In Spraguea Lophii (Microsporidia) Spore Hatching, Ann M. Findley, Earl H. Weidner, Kevin R. Carman, Zhimin Xu, J. Samuel Godbar

Faculty Publications

Microsporidia constitute a large group of obligate intracellular protozoan parasites that inject themselves into host cells via the extrusion apparatus of the infective spore stage. Although the injection process is poorly understood, its energy source is thought to reside in the posterior vacuole that swells significantly during spore firing. Here we report the presence and localisation of the key peroxisomal enzymes catalase and acyl-CoA oxidase (ACOX) within the posterior vacuole of Spraguea lophii (Doflein, 1898) spores. Western blot analyses show that these enzymes discharge out of the spore and end up in the medium external to the extruded sporoplasms. The …
