Some Yemeni Ideas About Human Rights, Sheila Carapico Jan 2005

Some Yemeni Ideas About Human Rights, Sheila Carapico

Political Science Faculty Publications

Yemeni intellectuals voiced human rights concerns throughout the twentieth century. Of course, as elsewhere, the early incarnations of a human rights movement in this most populous corner of Arabia did not use the term huquq al-insan (human rights), popularized only in the 1990s. Moreover, the emphasis was consistently on limiting arbitrary governance and justice. Still, Yemenis tackled issues such as social equality, popular participation, judicial autonomy, due process, prison conditions, and intellectual freedom, among others. This chapter explores how a fragmented yet tenacious intellectual movement grounded in indigenous political culture produced writings intended to breach authoritarianism for over half a …

Sensationalism In Local Tv News: A Content Analysis Comparing Ratings And Non-Ratings Periods, Brittany Lee Sinner Jan 2005

Sensationalism In Local Tv News: A Content Analysis Comparing Ratings And Non-Ratings Periods, Brittany Lee Sinner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Sensationalism in journalism has been a topic of debate for centuries. Many critics charge that, in general, sensationalism dominates television news over public affairs reporting. However, a gap remains in the literature regarding whether there is an increase in sensationalism during ratings periods over non-ratings periods. This study examined the amounts of sensationalism/human interest stories and local public affairs reporting during those two periods. This study examined the four major local television news stations in Las Vegas: KVBC, KVVU, KLAS, and KTNV. Eight hypotheses were tested. The hypotheses posited that when comparing ratings periods to non-ratings periods, there would be …

Vultures In Eagles' Clothing: Conspiracy And Racial Fantasy In Populist Legal Thought, Angela P. Harris Jan 2005

Vultures In Eagles' Clothing: Conspiracy And Racial Fantasy In Populist Legal Thought, Angela P. Harris

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article has three interrelated aims. First, I will briefly describe the online world of the legal populists. My second aim in this Article is to give an account of legal populism that connects it with the American tradition of conspiracy theory and with the political consciousness of survivalism. My third and final aim in this Article is to examine, as David Williams has done in a wonderful series of articles, the relationship between the nation dreamed of by many legal populists and the one inhabited by state-sanctioned legal insiders.

Justifying The Disparate Impact Standard Under A Theory Of Equal Citizenship, Rebecca S. Giltner Jan 2005

Justifying The Disparate Impact Standard Under A Theory Of Equal Citizenship, Rebecca S. Giltner

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

Part I of this Note outlines the limitations on congressional power under Section V and their implications for justifying the constitutionality of the disparate impact standard. Part II explores the prohibition of intentional discrimination as a justification for the disparate impact standard and argues that justifying the disparate impact standard through this theory, as some courts currently do, may eventually narrow disparate impact doctrine and thus constrain the possibilities for substantive equality in employment. This Part also analogizes the limits of using an intentional discrimination rationale to justify the disparate impact standard to the limits of using the diversity rationale …

Felon Disenfrachisement Laws: Partisan Politics In The Legislatures, Jason Belmont Conn Jan 2005

Felon Disenfrachisement Laws: Partisan Politics In The Legislatures, Jason Belmont Conn

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This examination of the institutional changes to state legislatures, synthesized with an analysis of the handling of felon disenfranchisement laws by state legislatures, presents a troubling realization about the law today: in the twenty-first century, partisan politics moderates decisions about even the most basic and fundamental principles of democracy. This Note suggests that because state legislators follow their party leadership and position, a state's traditional treatment of racial minorities, geographic location, and even ideology are not the strongest indicators of a state's disenfranchisement laws. Rather, partisan politics drives changes to the state laws governing felon voter eligibility.

Si Se Puede, But Who Gets The Gravy?, Richard Delgado Jan 2005

Si Se Puede, But Who Gets The Gravy?, Richard Delgado

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

In this piece, the author writes in two alternating voices: the voice of rap and the voice of standard academic discourse. The rap passages are rude, direct, even raunchy, while the prose passages are rendered in academic English. This dichotomy is intentional: Rap represents the voice of the people, the voice from below, the voice of those who live in neighborhoods filled with broken glass, an impatient, insurgent voice that bears little in common with the complex, jargon-filled sentences of most contemporary left discourse. The latter voice, in my view, has become too detached from that of our many constituents …

From Race To Class Struggle: Re-Problematizing Critical Race Theory, E San Juan Jr. Jan 2005

From Race To Class Struggle: Re-Problematizing Critical Race Theory, E San Juan Jr.

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

The misconstrual of "class" as a theoretical and analytic concept for defining group or individual identity has led, especially during the Cold War period, to its confusion with status, life-style, and other ideological contingencies. This has vitiated the innovative attempt of CRT to link racism and class oppression. We need to reinstate the Marxist category of class derived from the social division of labor that generates antagonistic class relations. Class conflict becomes the key to grasping the totality of social relations of production, as well as the metabolic process of social reproduction in which racism finds its effectivity. This will …

The Law And Racism: Some Reflections On The Australian Experience, Laksiri Jayasuriya Jan 2005

The Law And Racism: Some Reflections On The Australian Experience, Laksiri Jayasuriya

Research outputs pre 2011

Racism in Australian society is not something new and surprising. For a variety of historical and socio-political reasons it has existed from the earliest days ·of colonisation, and there have been a variety of strategies tried over the years to deal with racism as a social problem. One strategy most frequently resorted to, especially in recent years, has been to use the law as a means of combating racism. Before considering the questions of law and racism, we need first to clarify what we mean by the term racism...

Online Learning As Information Delivery: Digital Myopia, Jan Herrington, Thomas Reeves, Ron Oliver Jan 2005

Online Learning As Information Delivery: Digital Myopia, Jan Herrington, Thomas Reeves, Ron Oliver

Research outputs pre 2011

In business and commerce, the concept of marketing myopia has been a useful tool to predict, analyze and explain the rise and fall of businesses. In this paper, we question whether the concept can also be used to predict the ultimate downfall of online learning in higher education, if universities continue to confuse their key mission— education—with the much more product-oriented aim of information delivery. The proliferation of information-based online courses is examined within the context of the limitations imposed by widely used course management systems, institutional impediments and other factors that encourage teachers to adopt information delivery in preference …

An Ant Colony Optimization Approach To Test Sequence Generation For State-Based Software Testing, Huaizhong Li, Chiou Peng Lam Jan 2005

An Ant Colony Optimization Approach To Test Sequence Generation For State-Based Software Testing, Huaizhong Li, Chiou Peng Lam

Research outputs pre 2011

Properly generated test suites may not only locate the defects in software systems, but also help in reducing the high cost associated with software testing, ft is often desired that test sequences in a test suite can be automatically generated to achieve required test coverage. However, automatic test sequence generation remains a major problem in software testing. This paper proposes an ant colony optimization approach to automatic test sequence generation for state-based software testing. The proposed approach can directly use UML artifacts to automatically generate test sequences to achieve required test coverage.

Learning Designs And Learning Objects: Where Pedagogy Meets Technology, Ron Oliver, Ralph Wirski, Lisa Wait, Vivienne Blanksby

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper discusses an Australian project where online learning materials with problem-based learning designs are being developed in a form which facilitates their inclusion in digital repositories and learning management systems. To that end the products are being developed as properly formed SCORM compliant IMS content packages. This paper discusses issues associated with the design of online resources characterised by quality learning designs and their subsequent redevelopment as IMS content packages.

Vlsi Implementation Of A Skin Detector Based On A Neural Network, Farid Boussaid, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Douglas Chai Jan 2005

Vlsi Implementation Of A Skin Detector Based On A Neural Network, Farid Boussaid, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Douglas Chai

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper describes the VLSI implementation of a skin detector based on a neural network. The proposed skin detector uses a multilayer perception with three inputs, one hidden layer, one output neuron and a saturating linear activation function to simplify the hardware implementation. The skin detector achieves a classification accuracy of 88.76%. To reduce mismatch associated errors, a single skin detection processing unit is used to classify all pixels of the input RGB image. The current-mode fully analog skin detection processing circuitry only performs computations during the read-out phase, enabling real-time processing. Fully programmable, the proposed skin detection processing circuitry …

Assessment Centers: Recent Developments In Practice And Research, Filip Lievens, George C. Thornton Iii Jan 2005

Assessment Centers: Recent Developments In Practice And Research, Filip Lievens, George C. Thornton Iii

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In an assessment center, candidates who participate in various simulation exercises are evaluated by a multiple trained assessors on job-related dimensions. Examples of commonly used simulation exercises are role-plays, presentations, in-baskets, or group discussions. For nearly fifty years, assessment centers have remained a popular approach for managerial selection and development (Spychalski, Quinones, Gaugler, & Pohley, 1997), and they have been shown to have substantial validity (Thornton & Rupp, 2004). Assessment centers are also very much an international affair as they are used around the globe (Byham, 2001; Kudisch, Avis, Fallon, Thibodeaux, Roberts, Rollier, & Rotolo, 2001; Sarges, 2001). Over the …

Admissibility Of Craniofacial Superimposition Evidence As A Means Of Forensic Identification In Malaysia / Amar Singh Ishar Singh, Ishar Singh Amar Singh

Student Works (2000-2009)

Craniofacial superimposition is a method of comparing the characteristic features of a skull with a photograph of a person whose identity is known. As a technique to aid the personal identification of unknown human remains, it is not new, and its application can be traced back to the late 19th Century. It can be used not only in the identification of the dead but also the living and is fast becoming an important method in forensic anthropology. This is because surveillance cameras are often employed as silent witnesses in crime scenes such as at banks, convenience stores and airports. This …
