Women And Power In Hollywood: Comparing The Female Position Of Power In The Film Industry In The 1920s & 1970s, Caitlin Mcfarland Jan 2005

Women And Power In Hollywood: Comparing The Female Position Of Power In The Film Industry In The 1920s & 1970s, Caitlin Mcfarland

Whittier Scholars Program

This project is a research paper on the history of women in the film industry. The author begins by pointing out that women have established narrative film, started the first American studios and tried inventive new camera angles among other accomplishments that are not talked about. During the early 1990s, women were in the center of the film industry and well represented. The return of men from the war, socio-economic status, the creation of the Code of Decency, and more sophisticated technology were some of the theories as to why women became marginalized in the industry. The paper then discusses …

Analytical And Synthetic Methods For Anatoxins., Janet Crowley Jan 2005

Analytical And Synthetic Methods For Anatoxins., Janet Crowley

Theses

This thesis is focused on the potent cyanobacterial neurotoxins anatoxin-a (AN), its methyl analogue homoanatoxin-a (HMAN) and their non-toxic dihydro- and epoxydegradation products. In commencing the investigation into this area a literature review was performed in order to identify areas where more research and method development was required (Chapter 1). The review highlighted the fact that although a number of analytical methods had been developed for the analysis of AN, there were few methods for the determination of its potent homologue HMAN and their non-toxic degradation products. As these neurotoxins degrade quickly it is important to monitor their degradation products, …

Validation Of An Immunomagnetic-Electrochemiluminescence Detection System For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli 0157 In Food And Comparison With An Iso Standard Method, Eimear Carney Jan 2005

Validation Of An Immunomagnetic-Electrochemiluminescence Detection System For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli 0157 In Food And Comparison With An Iso Standard Method, Eimear Carney

Theses

Rapid and sensitive methods for detecting Escherichia coli 0157 in contaminated food, water and other biological samples are important in limiting and preventing the spread of this pathogen. Traditional culture based methods for bacterial identification and detection can be time consuming and labour intensive. Modem alternative methods should be faster whilst maintaining sensitivity. Immunomagnetic separation (IMS) methodology has been investigated and appears promising for rapid bacterial detection in unrelated food and environmental samples. In this study, a commercial sensor which combined IMS with electrochemiluminescence (ECL) was evaluated for the detection of E. coli 0157 in unrelated food matrices. Emitted signals …

Building A Declarative Workflow Engine, Patrick Rushe Jan 2005

Building A Declarative Workflow Engine, Patrick Rushe

Theses

In the last two decades, technology has become available that not only allows certain activities of a business process to be automated, but also allows a business process itself to be automatically managed. A Workflow Management System assigns the work, passes it on, and tracks its progress. This technology is called Workflow. Workflow is the automation and formal management of a business process.

Many commercial and open-source Workflow Management Systems are available. However, the cost and technical difficulty in implementing either can be excessively high. The primary contribution of this work is to prove that building a workflow engine is …

Legal Strategies To Combat Corruption: Some Developments In The Saarc Region, Dr. Kamal Hossain Jan 2005

Legal Strategies To Combat Corruption: Some Developments In The Saarc Region, Dr. Kamal Hossain

National Law School of India Review

While it is accepted that corruption is a systemic problem in the South Asian region, questions remain about its underlying cases. The article identifies two developments that provide opportunities for corrupt practices to abound in the SAARC region- to democratic polities and the transition from state-run to market-driven economies and the growing trend of political parties to look for illicit contributions to fund expensive election campaigns. In addition for the need to have greater transparency, the article argues that fostering respect for the Rule of Law and putting in place an enforceable Right to Information are key steps in combating …

The Model Law For Refugees: An Important Step Forward?, Arun Sagar, Farrah Ahmed Jan 2005

The Model Law For Refugees: An Important Step Forward?, Arun Sagar, Farrah Ahmed

National Law School of India Review

This note analyses the proposed Model National Law for Refugees, which has been drafted for South Asia, with the basic premise that India's past practice in dealing with refugee situations has not been sufficiently consistent, and there is a need for a uniform legislation. The note compares the Model Law with existing international instruments and other national legislations, and concludes that the adoption of the law would be an important step in guaranteeing fair treatment of refugees in India due to its implementation of a uniform status-determination regime and incorporation of rights for refugees. At the same time, the law …

Suresh Gupta V. Government Of Nct, Delhi, (2004) 6 Scc 422., Aparna Chandra

National Law School of India Review

Reviewing the decision of the Supreme Court of India in Suresh Gupta v. Government of NCT, Delhi (2004), this case note looks at issues regarding criminal liability for medical negligence that arose in the said case, the decision of the Court and a jurisprudential analysis thereof. The case note suggests that, while the judgement follows well-established precedents in coming to the conclusion that the standard of negligence for attributing criminal liability is that of gross negligence, there are certain conceptual fallacies in the reasoning of the court that need further discussion.

Of Marginality: Poverty, Migration And Memory In The Megacity, Shail Mayaram Jan 2005

Of Marginality: Poverty, Migration And Memory In The Megacity, Shail Mayaram

Socio-Legal Review

The article addresses issues of marginalisation in the context of postcolonial migration to the megacity. Taking Delhi as an example, the author outlines first, the nature of migration during partition, and the importance of identities as central to the construction of the modern middle class mediated by a welfare-state, before moving on to examine the particular situation of migration in the context of poverty. Through the lived stories of men and women, what the author reflexively calls the ‘anecdotal’ mode, she attempts to identify the subaltern of the city, marginalised at once by the state, its elite citizens and the …

The Middle Passage: Migration And Displacement Of Sri Lankan Tamil Women Of The Diaspora, Sivamohan Sumathi Jan 2005

The Middle Passage: Migration And Displacement Of Sri Lankan Tamil Women Of The Diaspora, Sivamohan Sumathi

Socio-Legal Review

The article attempts to grapple with the different facets of marginalisation produced by a specific type of Diasporic activity - as women, as Sri Lankan Tamils, and as participations that must negotiate a process that is at once transnational and postcolonial. Through the examination of different cultural modes of expression, novels, stories, and pamphlets, it attempts to answer as to how the Sri Lankan Tamil woman, away-from-home, makes sense of her world and how she sees it vis-a-vis her 'homeland.' Though displaccement itself contains the libertatory potential, is this 'truth' of a better world often distorted by the indirect and …

Functional Nanoparticles In Thin Films As Sensing Media, Elena A. Guliants, Ryan Schwarb, Hope Bearbower, James R. Gord, Christopher E. Bunker Jan 2005

Functional Nanoparticles In Thin Films As Sensing Media, Elena A. Guliants, Ryan Schwarb, Hope Bearbower, James R. Gord, Christopher E. Bunker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The combination of unique properties offered by materials on the nanoscale with the increased role of surface chemistry in nanostructured solids makes core-shell nanoparticles extremely attractive for application to "smart" thin-film coatings. Sensing properties of nanoparticle-based thin films were studied in several systems containing organic-coated semiconductor and metallic particles. In semiconductors, the interaction of organic shell and/or thin-film "matrix" with the environment results in changes in the nanoparticle's surface states, altering the optical properties of the thin film. Measuring the electrical properties of thin films composed of metallic cores with hydrocarbon shells offers another mechanism to monitor the local environment …

Cuevas Y Megalitos: Los Contextos Sepulcrales Colectivos En La Prehistoria Reciente Cantábrica Caves And Megaliths: Funerary Collective Contexts Of The Recent Prehistory In Cantabrian Spain, Roberto Ontañón, Ángel Armendáriz

KIP Articles

In the Recent Prehistory of Cantabrian …

Response To Edmund Campion's Film Review Of Luther, Christian P. Stehr Jan 2005

Response To Edmund Campion's Film Review Of Luther, Christian P. Stehr

Swiss American Historical Society Review

After the success of the film BONHOEFFER: AGENT OF GRACE, with over 13 million viewers on U.S. Public Television,63 the same German-American production partners (NFPteleart Berlin and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans) took up a much larger project in 1999: an epic movie about the historic Martin Luther. The goal was to portray Luther in such a way that he would appeal to the young generations of the 21 st century, while making them understand why the man showed up on countless top ten lists of millennial figures. This essentially meant taking Luther off his pedestal to tell the real-life story …

Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Water: Evaluating Water As A Human Right And The Duties And Obligations It Creates, Amy Hardberger Jan 2005

Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Water: Evaluating Water As A Human Right And The Duties And Obligations It Creates, Amy Hardberger

Faculty Articles

The Right to Water should be an independent, explicit human right. As such, the status of the right to water would be raised to the status of customary international law (jus cogens), imposing an affirmative, obligatory duty an all nations. Historically the right to water has been included in the right to life, limiting the right; however, that approach undermines the essential importance of water and causes enforcement problems that would be avoided by regarding water as an independent right.

Landmark international agreements, treatises, and the work of various international entities and other non-governmental organizations have made tremendous strides in …

Which Judges Write Their Opinions (And Should We Care)?, Stephen J. Choi, G. Mitu Gulati Jan 2005

Which Judges Write Their Opinions (And Should We Care)?, Stephen J. Choi, G. Mitu Gulati

Faculty Articles

Common wisdom holds that many federal judges do not write their own opinions. While their degree of input into opinion writing varies, almost all rely to some extent on law clerks, typically recent law school graduates, to research and draft substantial sections of the opinion. Why should we care which judges write their opinions? We posit that determining the actual input of federal judges into the authorship of opinions provides useful information in a number of contexts, including judicial promotion decisions, the allocation of scarce judicial resources, and the judicial clerkship market for law students. We start with generic tests …

Do States Socialize?, José E. Alvarez Jan 2005

Do States Socialize?, José E. Alvarez

Faculty Articles

The article presents the author's comments on the views expressed by professors Ryan Goodman and Derek Jinks in their article "How to Influence States: Socialization and International Human Rights Law." He believes that the article offers insights on a field still dominated by an emphasis on black letter doctrine. He suggests that the professors, who relied on socialization as a theory of compliance, need case studies to provide context and further nuance.
