Nf05-653 Pyemotes Itch Mites, James A. Kalisch, David L. Keith, Alberto R. Broce

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Two North American Species of itch mites — the straw itch mite and the "oak leaf gall mite" (Family Pyemotidae) — are found in Nebraska and Kansas. The straw itch mite was known in the early 1900s as a nuisance pest after farm workers handled small grains. Wheat, oats, and barley were often infested with insects on which the itch mites fed, allowing them to reach large numbers by harvest. The oak leaf gall mite recently discovered in galls on pin oaks in Lincoln, Neb., and Manhattan, Kan., is believed to be a relatively recent introduction to the United States. …

Thermal Imaging Applications In Urban Deer Control, Earl Hodnett Jan 2005

Thermal Imaging Applications In Urban Deer Control, Earl Hodnett

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Control of burgeoning populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is a challenging endeavor under the best of circumstances. The challenge is further complicated when control programs are attempted within an urban or suburban area. Wildlife managers often consider management techniques and equipment which have a proven track record. New challenges require new and innovative techniques. The deer management program in Fairfax County, Virginia has employed thermal imaging technology in a variety of ways to better address these unique challenges. In addition to the more commonly used aircraft-mounted FLIR (forward looking infrared), this program utilizes vehicle-mounted and hand-held thermal …

Dogs For Reducing Wildlife Damage To Organic Crops: A Case Study, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Nathan Seward, Daniel Hirchert, Michael Jones, Scott F. Beckerman Jan 2005

Dogs For Reducing Wildlife Damage To Organic Crops: A Case Study, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Nathan Seward, Daniel Hirchert, Michael Jones, Scott F. Beckerman

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Deer (Odocoileus spp.) damage millions of dollars in agricultural crops each year in the United States. A variety of frightening devices and repellants have been developed to reduce crop depredation, however most are effective temporarily (months). Several types of fences are available, but the most effective are expensive, time consuming to install, and may be considered aesthetically displeasing. Additional means to control wildlife damage to agriculture are needed. We evaluated the efficacy of dogs (Canis familiaris) over a several year period for preventing crop damage caused by white-tailed deer (O. virginianus) and other wildlife at …

Ground Water Monitoring Using Smart Sensors, Srikanth Anumalla, Byrav Ramamurthy, David Gosselin Jan 2005

Ground Water Monitoring Using Smart Sensors, Srikanth Anumalla, Byrav Ramamurthy, David Gosselin

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Groundwater resources are the principal source of drinking water for about 50 percent of the United States population. Groundwater resources in Nebraska are under increasing stress as there is a rapid growth in their usage. Water managers need more timely and accurate data to assess ground-water conditions to manage adverse situations such as drought and loss of pumpage in agriculture and domestic water supply. Currently groundwater researchers use stand-alone data logging equipment which is labor intensive and the method is not easily scalable if the number of logging locations increases. Commercially available real-time data monitoring solutions are either prohibitively costly …

A New Digital Image Compression Algorithm Based On Nonlinear Dynamical Systems, Chance Glenn, Michael Eastman, Gaurav Paliwal

Presentations and other scholarship

In this paper we discuss the formulation of, and show the results for, a new compression/decompression algorithm called DYNAMAC, that has its basis in nonlinear systems theory. We show that we are able to achieve significant compression of RGB image data while maintaining good image quality. We discuss the implementation of this algorithm in hardware, show that the same process is applicable to other digital forms of data, demonstrate that the decompression process is ideal for streaming applications, and show that the algorithm has an exploitable aspect of encryption useful for digital rights management and secure transmission. We discuss our …

Strategies For Embedding Scholarship In The Educational Experiences Of Engineering Technology Undergraduate Students, Abi Aghayere Jan 2005

Strategies For Embedding Scholarship In The Educational Experiences Of Engineering Technology Undergraduate Students, Abi Aghayere

Presentations and other scholarship

The hallmark of Engineering Technology (ET) programs is its student-centered curriculum and hands-on approach to teaching. Many institutions with ET programs now require scholarship of their ET faculty in addition to their teaching duties. In many institutions that have always emphasized scholarship and research, undergraduate student education has often times taken a back seat to research. The question that arises for ET programs as we begin to engage in scholarly activities is: how do we insure that ET scholarship is student-centered similar to ET teaching and curriculum? The benefits of scholarship to ET students include enhancement of their critical thinking, …

Scanning Photographic Processes, Andrew Davidhazy Jan 2005

Scanning Photographic Processes, Andrew Davidhazy

Presentations and other scholarship

Photographs imply that they are representations of a particular scene in terms height, width and an instant in time. There are cameras that display time itself as a dimension of the final record. These are sometimes called "streak" or “strip” cameras. These cameras can be thought of as strip chart recorders where the subject information is gathered optically. This makes streak cameras powerful tools for non-contact measurement of subject changes over time. But they can also be used for other than purely technical applications. In this presentation several improvised cameras of this type based on film and CCD or solid-state …

The Product Approach To Data Quality And Fitness For Use: A Framework For Analysis, M. Pamela Neely Jan 2005

The Product Approach To Data Quality And Fitness For Use: A Framework For Analysis, M. Pamela Neely

Presentations and other scholarship

The value of management decisions, the security of our nation, and the very foundations of our business integrity are all dependent on the quality of data and information. However, the quality of the data and information is dependent on how that data or information will be used. This paper proposes a theory of data quality based on the five principles defined by J. M. Juran for product and service quality and extends Wang et al's 1995 framework for data quality research. It then examines the data and information quality literature from journals within the context of this framework.

Data Quality And The Data Warehouse: A Decision Support System For Allocation Of Scarce Resources, M. Pamela Neely

Presentations and other scholarship

This paper describes a decision support system (DSS) for use in allocating scarce resources associated with data quality efforts in the construction of a data warehouse. The DSS is populated with metadata from a data warehouse project, including tags that identify the quality at intersections of data field, data use, and data dimensions. The resulting DSS can then experiment using business students are then presented. It can be shown that, given the proper set of skills, business students, as proxies for novices on a data warehouse development team, can effectively use the tool to analyze and prioritize hundreds of potential …

Mean Stress Effects On Random Fatigue Of Nonlinear Structures, Karl Sweitzer, N.S. Ferguson Jan 2005

Mean Stress Effects On Random Fatigue Of Nonlinear Structures, Karl Sweitzer, N.S. Ferguson

Presentations and other scholarship

Random fatigue analysis techniques have concentrated on linear structures that exhibit symmetric stress range probability density functions (PDF). In narrowband response and broadband random response it is assumed that the bending stress range PDF is symmetric and has zero mean stress. Structures that can exhibit geometrical nonlinearity, under large deflections, typically introduce membrane effects, which are additional positive tensile stresses that tend to skew the stress range PDF. This paper investigates fatigue analysis approaches that include mean stress effects and show how they can be applied to nonlinear random vibration problems.

Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization, Jason Tillett, T. Rao, Ferat Sahin, Raghuveer Rao Jan 2005

Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization, Jason Tillett, T. Rao, Ferat Sahin, Raghuveer Rao

Presentations and other scholarship

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), an evolutionary algorithm for optimization is extended to determine if natural selection, or survival-of-the- fittest, can enhance the ability of the PSO algorithm to escape from local optima. To simulate selection, many simultaneous, parallel PSO algorithms, each one a swarm, operate on a test problem. Simple rules are developed to implement selection. The ability of this so-called Darwinian PSO to escape local optima is evaluated by comparing a single swarm and a similar set of swarms, differing primarily in the absence of the selection mechanism, operating on the same test problem. The selection process is shown …

Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Engineered Materials In The Microwave And Millimeter Wave Regime, Zhaolin Lu, Shouyuan Shi, Christopher Schuetz, Dennis Prather Jan 2005

Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Engineered Materials In The Microwave And Millimeter Wave Regime, Zhaolin Lu, Shouyuan Shi, Christopher Schuetz, Dennis Prather

Presentations and other scholarship

In this paper we present the study of a two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal with all-angle negative refraction in its first band. Using this photonic crystal, we designed and fabricated a flat lens functioning as a cylindrical lens, by increasing the vertical dimension of the photonic crystal. Two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulation validated negative imaging and sub-wavelength resolution. To perform the experiment, a microwave imaging system was built based on a vector network analyzer. Field distributions were acquired by scanning the imaging plane and object plane. The experiment demonstrated negative refraction imaging in both amplitude and phase, and verified sub-wavelength resolution.

Timeshare As A Strategy In Tourism Investment: The Case Of Croatia, Rick Lagiewski, Damon Revelas

Presentations and other scholarship

The purpose of this paper is to examine how timeshare strategy can assist tourism investment in the lodging sector within a transitional economy. Specifically, the study describes initial timeshare operations in Croatia, an example of a transitional country, steeped in tourism tradition. Moreover, the discussion identifies benefits and challenges to timeshare implementation for hotel companies, when applied to broader tertiary perspectives. By using the case study approach, a record of events that lead to establishing timeshare operations should serve as a collaborative example to other developers, investors, hotel companies and legal entities that may attempt similar projects in other transitional …

Law's Box: Law, Jurisprudence And The Information Ecosphere, Paul D. Callister Jan 2005

Law's Box: Law, Jurisprudence And The Information Ecosphere, Paul D. Callister

Faculty Works

For so long as it has been important to know what the law is, the practice of law has been an information profession. Nonetheless, just how the information ecosphere affects legal discourse and thinking has never been systematically studied. Legal scholars study how law attempts to regulate information flow, but they say little about how information limits, shapes, and provides a medium for law to operate.

Part I of the paper introduces a holistic approach to medium theory - the idea that methods of communication influence social development and ideology - and applies the theory to the development of legal …

Everyday Antiracism: Competence And Religion In The Cultural Repertoire Of The African American Elite, Michèle Lamont, Crystal M. Fleming Jan 2005

Everyday Antiracism: Competence And Religion In The Cultural Repertoire Of The African American Elite, Michèle Lamont, Crystal M. Fleming

Africana Studies: Faculty Publications

This exploratory study makes a contribution to the literature on antiracism by unpacking the cultural categories through which everyday antiracism is experienced and practiced by extraordinarily successful African Americans. Using a phenomenological approach, we focus on processes of classification to analyze the criteria that members of the African American elite mobilize to compare racial groups and establish their equality. We first summarize results from earlier work on the antiracist strategies of White and African American workers. Second, drawing upon in-depth interviews with members of the Black elite, we show that demonstrating intelligence and competence, and gaining knowledge, are particularly valued …
