Language Deficiency And The Occupational Attainment Of Mexican Immigrants, Elizabeth Planas '05
Language Deficiency And The Occupational Attainment Of Mexican Immigrants, Elizabeth Planas '05
Undergraduate Economic Review
The number of Mexican immigrants that have entered the U.S. has greatly increased over the past decade. The occupational attainment of these immigrants provides insight into how successful they are in the host country and language deficiency has an effect on this occupational attainment. By controlling for language proficiency, human capital characteristics and other variables from the IPUMS database, this project uses probit analysis to predict the probablity that an immigrant will be employed in a favorable occupation in the U.S. Results show that language deficiency reduces the probability of attaining a favorable occupation, but having no English language skills …
Characterization Of The Mechanisms By Which The Organophosphorus Compound Malathion Induces Apoptosis In L929 Murine Fibroblasts, Laila Masoud Ali Al-Alawi
Characterization Of The Mechanisms By Which The Organophosphorus Compound Malathion Induces Apoptosis In L929 Murine Fibroblasts, Laila Masoud Ali Al-Alawi
Theses
While acute organophosphorous compound poisoning due to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase is a well-established clinical entity, the existence of chronic poisoning due to exposure to low levels of organophosphorous compounds (below the threshold required for cholinergic clinical symptoms) is a hotly debated issue. In this study, we have evaluated the effects of noncholinergic doses of malathion (0.01-20 µM) on apoptosis of murine L929 fibroblasts. Employing flow cytometric and caspase activation analyses, we demonstrate that malathion induces apoptosis in L929 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The initiator caspases (caspase-8 and caspase-9) as well as the effector caspase (caspase-3) were activated …

Effect Of Anti-Oxidants On Endocrine And Metabolic Parameters Of Diabetic Rats, Maryam Suroor Al Shamsi
Effect Of Anti-Oxidants On Endocrine And Metabolic Parameters Of Diabetic Rats, Maryam Suroor Al Shamsi
Theses
Diabetes mellitus is recognized as one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. About 5 to 6% of the world population suffers from this disease and the number of people diagnosed with diabetes is rapidly increasing. Diabetes has been demonstrated to be associated with oxidative stress and hyperglycemia, one of the most important indictors of oxidative stress. Normally the endogenous mechanisms of enzymes and antioxidants are able to destroy the reactive species and create a balance between antioxidant and free radicals. In diabetes, the oxidative stress is increased due to the deficiency in the antioxidant defense. …

Characterisation Of An Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer For Holographic Data Storage, Hosam Sherif
Masters
An acrylamide-based photopolymer, formulated in the Centre for Industrial and Engineering Optics, was investigated as a recording material for holographic data storage applications. Holographic data storage (HDS) is an optical storage technique, which theoretically allows densities as high as tens of TB/cm2 with data transfer rates of many GB/s/. HDS has unique advantages, such as the ability to perform parallel data searches (associative recall) and implement novel encryption techniques. At present, many materials have been investigated to determine their suitability for use as HDS media. As yet, no one material possesses all the properties that are required to realise the …

The Systematic Evaluation Of A Strategic Management Program In An Irish Institute Of Technology, Deirdre Lillis
Conference papers
Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) worldwide are investing significant resources in strategic planning and self-evaluation programs to improve institutional performance and to meet external stakeholder demands. Little empirical evidence exists however which demonstrates that these programs are effective in leading to improvements in institutional performance, let alone shed light on the reasons why. This paper reports on the systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of a Strategic Management program in an Irish HEI over a five year period in leading to improvements in institutional performance.
Prioritization Methods For Accelerating Mdp Solvers, Kevin Seppi, David Wingate
Prioritization Methods For Accelerating Mdp Solvers, Kevin Seppi, David Wingate
Faculty Publications
The performance of value and policy iteration can be dramatically improved by eliminating redundant or useless backups, and by backing up states in the right order. We study several methods designed to accelerate these iterative solvers, including prioritization, partitioning, and variable reordering. We generate a family of algorithms by combining several of the methods discussed, and present extensive empirical evidence demonstrating that performance can improve by several orders of magnitude for many problems, while preserving accuracy and convergence guarantees.

A Genetically Evolved Solution To The Firing Squad Problem, Brian J. Tajuddin
A Genetically Evolved Solution To The Firing Squad Problem, Brian J. Tajuddin
Theses
In 1957, J. Myhill presented the firing squad problem. A special case of k-color cellular automata (CA) synchronization, the firing squad problem offers more stringent rules allowing for a provable minimal running time. To date, CA solutions have been found that run in minimal time using as many as sixteen states and as few as six [5]. There have also been arguments against the existence of solutions using only 4 states [11]. Due to the extremely large search space involved with such problems, the existing solutions have all been analytic in nature. We attempt to apply genetic algorithms and genetic …
Burial Of Terrestrial Organic Matter In Marine Sediments: A Re-Assessment, David J. Burdige
Burial Of Terrestrial Organic Matter In Marine Sediments: A Re-Assessment, David J. Burdige
OES Faculty Publications
Calculations based on recent observations indicate that approximately one third of the organic matter presently being buried in marine sediments may be of terrestrial origin, with the majority of this terrestrial organic matter (TOM) burial occurring in muddy, deltaic sediments. These calculations further suggest that the remineralization of terrestrial organic matter in the oceans is also much less efficient than that of marine organic matter. These two underappreciated observations have important implications in terms of our understanding of the controls on the global carbon cycle. From a paleoceanographic perspective, the results presented here also suggest that changes in TOM burial …

We report iron measurements for water column and aerosol samples collected in the Sargasso Sea during July-August 2003 (summer 2003) and April-May 2004 (spring 2004). Our data reveal a large seasonal change in the dissolved iron (dFe) concentration of surface waters in the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study region, from ∼1-2nM in summer 2003, when aerosol iron concentrations were high (mean 10 nmol/m-3), to ∼0.1-0.2nM in spring 2004, when aerosol iron concentrations were low (mean 0.64 nmol/m-3). During summer 2003, we observed an increase of ∼0.6nM in surface water dFe concentrations over 13 days, presumably due to …

Modeling And Optimization Of Machining Performance Measures In Face Milling Of Automotive Aluminum Alloy A380 Under Different Lubrication/Cooling Conditions For Sustainable Manufacturing, Abhijit Dilip Kardekar
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The use of cutting fluids in machining process is very essential for achieving desired machining performance. Due to the strict environmental protection laws now in effect, there is a wide-scale evaluation of the use of cutting fluids in machining. Consequently, minimal quantity lubrication (MQL), which uses very small quantity of cutting fluids and still offers the same functionality as flood cooling, can be considered as an alternative solution. This thesis presents an experimental study of face milling of automotive aluminum alloy A380 under four different lubrication/cooling conditions: dry cutting, flood cooling, MQL (Oil), and MQL (Water). Experiments were design using …
Comparison Of Hyperspectral Imagery Target Detection Algorithm Chains, David C. Grimm
Comparison Of Hyperspectral Imagery Target Detection Algorithm Chains, David C. Grimm
Theses
Detection of a known target in an image has several different approaches. The complexity and number of steps involved in the target detection process makes a comparison of the different possible algorithm chains desirable. Of the different steps involved, some have a more significant impact than others on the final result the ability to find a target in an image. These more important steps often include atmospheric compensation, noise and dimensionality reduction, background characterization, and detection (matched filtering for this research). A brief overview of the algorithms to be compared for each step will be presented.
This research seeks to …
An Evaluation Of A Multigrid Algorithm Error Spike Correction Method, Erika L. Mcmichael
An Evaluation Of A Multigrid Algorithm Error Spike Correction Method, Erika L. Mcmichael
Theses
This study is an evaluation of a method of improving the multigrid process by cor recting error spikes which are generated when moving from a coarser to finer level. The correction method was tested on nine one-dimensional problems governed by second order differential equations. Tests were performed with an accomodative, full approximation scheme, full multi-grid algorithm.
Results indicate that appropriate implementation of the correction can increase so lution accuracy. Accuracy was increased in 75% of cases in which a single correction was applied to a point in the central portion of the grid. Single corrections performed on points with error …

Novel Vlsi Architecture For Quantization And Variable Length Coding For H-264/Avc Video Compression Standard, Suneetha Kosaraju
Theses
Integrated multimedia systems process text, graphics, and other discrete media such as digital audio and video streams. In an uncompressed state, graphics, audio and video data, especially moving pictures, require large transmission and storage capacities which can be very expensive. Hence video compression has become a key component of any multimedia system or application. The ITU (International Telecommunications Union) and MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) have combined efforts to put together the next generation of video compression standard, the H.264/MPEG-4 PartlO/AVC, which was finalized in 2003. The H.264/AVC uses significantly improved and computationally intensive compression techniques to maximize performance. H.264/AVC …
Development Of Control Algorithm And A Simulation Tool For Self-Assembly Of Microsystems Based On Swarm Technology, Siddharth Mestry
Development Of Control Algorithm And A Simulation Tool For Self-Assembly Of Microsystems Based On Swarm Technology, Siddharth Mestry
Theses
"Chunxel" Technology is a novel concept of constructing 3-dimensional structures using a group of intelligent, autonomous, and cooperating micro robots. Chunxels are small robotic modules, cubical in shape, which are immersed in a tank containing a viscous fluid. The chunxels are propelled by the electromagnetic forces created by passing direct current through a set of large coils placed on each face of the tank and small coils embedded in the micro device. The chunxels follow a set of rules which mimic a swarm behavior and selfassemble in the liquid to form a 3-D structure. Swarm behavior is a dynamic problem …
Human Cardiovascular Responses To Artificial Gravity Training, Michael Brian Stenger
Human Cardiovascular Responses To Artificial Gravity Training, Michael Brian Stenger
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Human cardiovascular adaptations to microgravity include decreased plasma volume, exercise capacity, baroreflex function as well as decreased orthostatic tolerance upon return to a gravity environment. Several countermeasures have been proposed and tested, although currently none have been developed to prevent post-spaceflight orthostatic intolerance (OI). Artificial gravity (AG) generated by short-radius centrifugation (SRC) has been proposed as a countermeasure to OI as well as other cardiovascular alterations. Methods: Fifteen men and fourteen women underwent three weeks of daily (5 days a week) exposure to intermittent (1.0 to 2.5 Gz) artificial gravity on a 1.9m human powered centrifuge (HPC) at the NASA …
Studies Of Unusual Packing And Of Polymorphism In Two Crystal Systems, Xiang Hao
Studies Of Unusual Packing And Of Polymorphism In Two Crystal Systems, Xiang Hao
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Crystal structures of anhydrous pinacol, the hexagonal pinacol, pinacol monohydrate, and pinacol hexahydrate were studied. In all the structures crystal packing is unusual and complicated. The origin of the complexity may be the difficulty in filling space densely and while also satisfying the H-bonding requirements when the molecule has few internal degrees of freedom.
Five 15-crown-5 complexes of M(NO3)2 (M = Cu, Zn, Mg, Co, Mn) were synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The system is rich in polymorphs. Nine definite solid-state phases were identified. More phases probably exist in the solid state …
Three Dimensional Finite Element Modeling Of Pavement Subsurface Drainage Systems, Yinhui Liu
Three Dimensional Finite Element Modeling Of Pavement Subsurface Drainage Systems, Yinhui Liu
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Pavement subsurface drainage systems (PSDS) are designed to drain the entrapped water out of pavement. To investigate the effects of various factors on the performance of PSDS, three dimensional models were developed using the finite element method to simulate the unsaturated drainage process in pavement. The finite element models were calibrated using the field information on outflow, peak flow, layer saturations, and time to drain. Through a series of parametric analyses, the factors that significantly influence the performance of PSDS were screened out, and a set of recommendations were made to improve our current drainage practices. The effects of pavement geometry …
On The Properties And Complexity Of Multicovering Radii, Andrew Eugene Mertz
On The Properties And Complexity Of Multicovering Radii, Andrew Eugene Mertz
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
People rely on the ability to transmit information over channels of communication that aresubject to noise and interference. This makes the ability to detect and recover from errorsextremely important. Coding theory addresses this need for reliability. A fundamentalquestion of coding theory is whether and how we can correct the errors in a message thathas been subjected to interference. One answer comes from structures known as errorcorrecting codes.A well studied parameter associated with a code is its covering radius. The coveringradius of a code is the smallest radius such that every vector in the Hamming space of thecode is contained in …
Failure Mode Of The Weftless Bead And Evaluation Of Improved Continuous Single Wire Based Bead, Arun Kumar Doradla
Failure Mode Of The Weftless Bead And Evaluation Of Improved Continuous Single Wire Based Bead, Arun Kumar Doradla
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Weftless Bead design has long been in existence and still used in many passenger car, bus, truck and agriculture tractors. The ideal bead design is a high strength flexible cable with minimal cross section and covered by rubberized nylon, rayon or steel wire side wall. The basic tire bead designs are weftless bead with rubberized ribbon of parallel wires of multiple wound layers and a continuous wire wound in sufficient number of loops to give the required strength. Weftless bead failures generally occur within about 5cm from the end of the overlapping parallel wire ribbon. The cause for this failure …
Cycle-Up Of Multiple Rifting Event Models: How Long Does It Take To Reach A Steady State Stress?, Lokranjith K. Ravi
Cycle-Up Of Multiple Rifting Event Models: How Long Does It Take To Reach A Steady State Stress?, Lokranjith K. Ravi
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Many geological numerical models are initiated with a background stress state of zero. Often these numerical results are compared directly to geodetic data. Recent work (Kenner and Simons, 2004) has shown that modeled deformation rates can change as the model is cycled-up following repeated earthquakes or rifting events. In this study, we investigate model cycle-up in the context of time-dependent deformation following rifting during the 1975-1984 Krafla eruption in Iceland. We consider the number of rifting cycles required for complete cycle-up, variations in cycle-up time at different locations in the model, background stress magnitudes in fully cycled-up models, and errors …
