Evaluation Of The Getting It Right Literacy And Numeracy Strategy In Western Australian Schools : Using Data To Support Student Learning, Marion Meiers

Shaping educational policy

This paper and the paper by Dr. Lawrence Ingvarson are companion pieces to Rosemary Cahill’s account of the intentions of the Getting it Right Literacy and Numeracy Strategy, and the model of professional development on which the strategy is based. In these papers, we present some findings from the ACER evaluation of Getting it Right. We provide detailed results from the surveys of principals undertaken in 2003 and 2004, including findings of the use of data to improve planning. These results provide evidence of the impact of the initiative, and evidence of an increase of the impact of the strategy over …

The Use And Influence Of Technology In Mathematics Education, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas, Wei-Chi Yang

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The use of various types of technologies in the classroom and examinations is growing rapidly and is strongly influencing teaching and learning practices. In this paper, we will look at particular situations on how various technologies such as numerically capable calculators, graphics calculators, and technological tools that are CAS enabled or have CAS with Dynamic Geometry, impact students' learning. We also discuss briefly the educational opportunities that are made available by the emergence of graphics calculators with capabilities of handling electronic learning activities, such as Casio’s Class Pad (see [1]) and Casio’s 9860 graphics calculator.

Pre- And Post-Selection Paradoxes And Contextuality In Quantum Mechanics, Matthew S. Leifer, Robert W. Spekkens Jan 2005

Pre- And Post-Selection Paradoxes And Contextuality In Quantum Mechanics, Matthew S. Leifer, Robert W. Spekkens

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Many seemingly paradoxical effects are known in the predictions for outcomes of intermediate measurements made on pre- and post-selected quantum systems. Despite appearances, these effects do not demonstrate the impossibility of a noncontextual hidden variable theory, since an explanation in terms of measurement disturbance is possible. Nonetheless, we show that for every paradoxical effect wherein all the pre- and post-selected probabilities are 0 or 1 and the pre- and post-selected states are nonorthogonal, there is an associated proof of the impossibility of a noncontextual hidden variable theory. This proof is obtained by considering all the measurements involved in the paradoxical …

Extreme Rainfall In Texas: Patterns And Predictability, John W. Nielsen-Gammon, Fuqing Zhang, Andrew M. Odins, Boksoon Myoung Jan 2005

Extreme Rainfall In Texas: Patterns And Predictability, John W. Nielsen-Gammon, Fuqing Zhang, Andrew M. Odins, Boksoon Myoung

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Extreme rainfall, with storm total precipitation exceeding 500 mm, occurs several times per decade in Texas. According to a compositing analysis, the large-scale weather patterns associated with extreme rainfall events involve a northward deflection of the tropical trade winds into Texas, with deep southerly winds extending into the middle troposphere. One such event, the July 2002 South-Central Texas flood, is examined in detail. This particular event was associated with a stationary upper-level trough over central Texas and northern Mexico that established a steady influx of tropical moisture from the south. While the onset of the event was triggered by destabilization …

Commensurability Classes Of Twist Knots, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan Jan 2005

Commensurability Classes Of Twist Knots, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

In this paper we prove that if MK is the complement of a non-fibered twist knot K in S3, then MK is not commensurable to a fibered knot complement in a Z/2Z-homology sphere. To prove this result we derive a recursive description of the character variety of twist knots and then prove that a commensurability criterion developed by D. Calegari and N. Dunfield is satisfied for these varieties. In addition, we partially extend our results to a second infinite family of 2-bridge knots.

We describe dynamical properties of a map defined on the space of rational functions. The fixed points of F are classified and the long time behavior of a subclass is described in terms of Eulerian polynomials.

Derived Categories And The Analytic Approach To General Reciprocity Laws. Part I, Michael Berg Jan 2005

Derived Categories And The Analytic Approach To General Reciprocity Laws. Part I, Michael Berg

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We reformulate Hecke's open problem of 1923, regarding the Fourier-analytic proof of higher reciprocity laws, as a theorem about morphisms involving stratified topological spaces. We achieve this by placing Kubota's formulations of n-Hilbert reciprocity in a new topological context, suited to the introduction of derived categories of sheaf complexes. Subsequently, we begin to investigate conditions on associated sheaves and a derived category of sheaf complexes specifically designed for an attack on Hecke's eighty-year-old challenge.

From Loop Groups To 2-Groups, John C. Baez, Danny Stevenson, Alissa S. Crans, Urs Schreiber Jan 2005

From Loop Groups To 2-Groups, John C. Baez, Danny Stevenson, Alissa S. Crans, Urs Schreiber

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We describe an interesting relation between Lie 2-algebras, the Kac-Moody central extensions of loop groups, and the group String(n). A Lie 2-algebra is a categorified version of a Lie algebra where the Jacobi identity holds up to a natural isomorphism called the "Jacobiator". Similarly, a Lie 2-group is a categorified version of a Lie group. If G is a simply-connected compact simple Lie group, there is a 1-parameter family of Lie 2-algebras g_k each having Lie(G) as its Lie algebra of objects, but with a Jacobiator built from the canonical 3-form on G. There appears to be no Lie 2-group …

Bilingual School Psychologists' Practices With Students With Limited English Proficiency, Christopher John Lopes

Open Access Dissertations

The present study investigated bilingual school psychologists' practices with students with limited English proficiency (LEP). Two hundred and forty-five psychologists from the 2000 National Association of School Psychologists (HASP) directory of bilingual school psychologists were asked to complete a survey reporting demographic information, levels and kinds of professional experiences, current assessment and other professional practices, levels of perceived accuracy, and levels and types of training. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the demographic information and assessment instruments used. Point-biserial correlations were used to evaluate the degree of relationship between selected pairs of variables. A series of principle component analysis was …

Synthesis And Nmr-Characterization Of Three Quinamide-Based Disaccharide Mimetics With Unusual Cyclohexane Twist-Conformation, Thuy Trang M. Nguyen, Paul H. Gross, Andreas H. Franz Jan 2005

Synthesis And Nmr-Characterization Of Three Quinamide-Based Disaccharide Mimetics With Unusual Cyclohexane Twist-Conformation, Thuy Trang M. Nguyen, Paul H. Gross, Andreas H. Franz

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

The synthesis of amide-linked disaccharide mimetics has been explored starting with carbohydrate-based amines and a protected quinic acid lactone. Benzyl-2-amino-4,6-Obenzylidene-2-deoxy-α/β-D-glucopyranose (12) and D-glucamine (14) were successfully coupled to give the corresponding quinamides (13 and 15), while the quinoylation of Oacetylated L-fucopyranosyl methylamine (7) failed. The latter was prepared from per-O-acetylL-fucopyranose via the improved multigram scale synthesis of the corresponding per-O-acetylL-fucopyranosyl cyanide (3). Compound 3 was subsequently hydrogenated to yield a mixture of compound 7 and the per-O-acetylated bis-(fucopyranosylmethyl) amine (5). The vicinal coupling constants in the NMR spectra of all quinamide products revealed considerable flexibility of the cyclohexane ring in …

Magic Mountain, Diana Al-Hadid Jan 2005

Magic Mountain, Diana Al-Hadid

Theses and Dissertations

My installations are propositions for an imaginary world that relies on its own internal logic, a world of believability without recognition. While the work references landscape it also emphasizes its contrivance, as it is automatically estranged in an "unnatural" gallery setting. I subvert or de-familiarize the materials and processes that I use in the service of creating a fictitious environment. My places are impossible places. They are irregular, illogical, and unstable. Our imagination can be one of most dangerous things to psychological stability as it is an inventory of all things possible, no matter how irrational or improbable. The irrational …

Fuzzy Membership Function Initial Values: Comparing Initialization Methods That Expedite Convergence, Stephanie Scheibe Lee Jan 2005

Fuzzy Membership Function Initial Values: Comparing Initialization Methods That Expedite Convergence, Stephanie Scheibe Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Fuzzy attributes are used to quantify imprecise data that model real world objects. To effectively use fuzzy attributes, a fuzzy membership function must be defined to provide the boundaries for the fuzzy data. The initialization of these membership function values should allow the data to converge to a stable membership value in the shortest time possible. The paper compares three initialization methods, Random, Midpoint and Random Proportional, to determine which method optimizes convergence. The comparison experiments suggest the use of the Random Proportional method.

The Need, Feasibility, And Means Of Establishing A Speech Center, Julie Carter Irvin Jan 2005

The Need, Feasibility, And Means Of Establishing A Speech Center, Julie Carter Irvin

Theses and Dissertations

According to Tom Shachtman, "the speech of too few people achieves eloquence, and that of the vast majority does not even reach a tolerable level of articulate behavior" (5). Articulate behavior has not always been a rare characteristic; from antiquity through the mid-twentieth century, the study of rhetoric was privileged and considered necessary for a well-rounded education. If today's society is inarticulate, then how can eloquence and articulateness be reintroduced as staples of a successful person in today's society? The answer is easy - through the study of rhetoric. After examining the study of rhetoric from antiquity to the present, …

Kierkegaard, Kafka, And The Strength Of “The Absurd” In Abraham’S Sacrifice Of Isaac, Robert A. Darrow Jan 2005

Kierkegaard, Kafka, And The Strength Of “The Absurd” In Abraham’S Sacrifice Of Isaac, Robert A. Darrow

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Søren Kierkegaard and Franz Kafka are admired by a wide spectrum of literary critics and philosophers for their common emphasis on subjectivity and the importance of the individual as opposed to the group. However, because the lives, attitudes, and writings of the two authors were very different, it is of interest to continue to examine their possible interrelationship. Both Kierkegaard and Kafka wrote about the biblical Abraham, and the resulting texts provide material for such an examination, organized around the idea of absurdity. “The absurd” is Kierkegaard’s synonym for the religious level of existence, described in detail in Fear and …

Experimental kinetic studies were carried out examining the electronic to vibrational (E-V) energy transfer from spin-orbit excited Cl*(3 2P1/2 , 882 cm-1) to N2O(ν1) (symmetric stretch 1285 cm-1). All studies were carried out in the gas phase at room temperature (298 ± 2 K). Cl* was generated by pulsed laser photolysis of ICl at 532 nm in the presence of various mixtures of N2O, ICl,Ar, and SO2. Time-resolved IR signals of N2O(ν1) fluorescence at 7.8 μm were analyzed to obtain rate coefficients …

Bismuth Triflate Catalyzed Friedel-Crafts Acylations Of Sydnones, Jennifer Ann Fisher Jan 2005

Bismuth Triflate Catalyzed Friedel-Crafts Acylations Of Sydnones, Jennifer Ann Fisher

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In the present work, suitably functionalized arylsydnones were used to synthesize a variety of 4-acylsydnones and diacyl sydnones, both as potential precursors to novel sydnoquinolines. The approach to the diacyl species is based on the discovery that activated sydnonesbrominate in both the 4 position of the sydnone ring and on the phenyl ring. Thus, it seemed likely that Friedel-Crafts reactions on an activated sydnone would give diacylated species for McMurray coupling to sydnoquinolines. Friedel-Crafts acylations on the 4 position of the sydnone ring have been achieved in high yields using 4 equivalents of various alkyl anhydrides, 25 mol % of bismuth …

Pattern Recognition Via Machine Learning With Genetic Decision-Programming, Carl C. Hoff Jan 2005

Pattern Recognition Via Machine Learning With Genetic Decision-Programming, Carl C. Hoff

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In the intersection of pattern recognition, machine learning, and evolutionary computation is a new search technique by which computers might program themselves. That technique is called genetic decision-programming. A computer can gain the ability to distinguish among the things that it needs to recognize by using genetic decision-programming for pattern discovery and concept learning. Those patterns and concepts can be easily encoded in the spines of a decision program (tree or diagram). A spine consists of two parts: (1) the test-outcome pairs along a path from the program's root to any of its leaves and (2) the conclusion in that …

Calcareous Nannoplankton Response To Late Albian Oceanic Anoxic Event 1d In The Western North Atlantic, David K. Watkins, Matthew J. Cooper, Paul A. Wilson Jan 2005

Calcareous Nannoplankton Response To Late Albian Oceanic Anoxic Event 1d In The Western North Atlantic, David K. Watkins, Matthew J. Cooper, Paul A. Wilson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Well-preserved nannofossil and stable isotope records from the mid-Cretaceous of Ocean Drilling Project Leg 171B (western North Atlantic) indicate cyclical, productivity-based variations in surface water characteristics, suggesting orbitally paced changes in upwelling intensity and the strength of deep mixing associated with oceanic anoxic event (OAE)1d. Paleontologic and isotopic evidence suggest that collapse of upper water column stratification associated with OAE1d was preceded by approximately 1 m.y. of progressively decreasing water column stability and increasing surface water fertility. Thirteen species went extinct during a short (ca. 200 k.y.) interval associated with OAE1d. Nine of these have morphological characters suggesting adaptation to …

Guidelines For Data Collection Techniques And Methods For Roadside Station Origin-Destination Studies, Bryan P. Guy, Jon D. Fricker Jan 2005

Guidelines For Data Collection Techniques And Methods For Roadside Station Origin-Destination Studies, Bryan P. Guy, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Origin-Destination studies are often used in transportation planning to determine the travel patterns (origin-destination matrix) of vehicles and goods in a particular area. Given these travel patterns, the impacts of alternative solutions to current and future transportation problems can be evaluated. Therefore, it is important that the travel patterns be accurately measured. However, it is not always clear what data collection method should be used to obtain the type of data needed, while maximizing quality and minimizing the time and cost. The objective of this research is to review both conventional and experimental techniques for roadside station OD studies, and …

An Evaluation Of The Cost-Effectiveness Of Warranty Contracts In Indiana, Priyanka Singh, Samuel Labi, Bob Mccullouch, Kumares C. Sinha Jan 2005

An Evaluation Of The Cost-Effectiveness Of Warranty Contracts In Indiana, Priyanka Singh, Samuel Labi, Bob Mccullouch, Kumares C. Sinha

JTRP Technical Reports

In a bid to ensure cost-effective highway construction practices, highway agencies constantly seek ways to accelerate project design and delivery through implementation of innovative contracting and procurement practices. The concept of warranties, which is one of such promising practices, involves a shift of the burden of construction quality control, product performance and product maintenance from the owner to the contractor. As such, warranty projects are expected to enhance product quality and service life, and ultimately, reduced life-cycle cost. The expected benefits of warranty projects, however, could be offset by their historically higher construction costs. It is therefore necessary to evaluate …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

It is well known that earthquakes cause hydrological changes, such as drying or flooding of water wells, fluctuations in ground-water levels in wells, changes in water quality, and formation of new springs. Significant drops in ground-water levels in wells were recorded during recent earthquakes in NW Turkey on August 17, 1999 in İzmit and on November 12, 1999 in Düzce. The İzmit earthquake (Ms 7.4) caused pre-seismic water-level changes in wells at Eskişehir, located 118-216 km away from the epicentre. Well-level changes in the Eskişehir, Sakarya, Bursa, Yalova, Yenişehir and İnegöl basins were recorded prior to and after the Düzce …
