Geotectonic Setting And Origin Of The Youngest Kula Volcanics (Western Anatolia), With A New Emplacement Model, Murat Tokçaer, Samuele Agostini, Mehmet Yilmaz Savaşçin Jan 2005

Geotectonic Setting And Origin Of The Youngest Kula Volcanics (Western Anatolia), With A New Emplacement Model, Murat Tokçaer, Samuele Agostini, Mehmet Yilmaz Savaşçin

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Quaternary Kula volcanics are Na-dominant in character while all the older volcanic rocks of western Anatolia are generally definitive K-dominant rocks. As a unique example in western Anatolia, the existence of a huge amount of plateau basalts at Kula indicates rapid uplift of mantle material, as confirmed by new geochemical data. Based on our field observations, the oldest Kula volcanics are the plateau basalts with more than one main lava flow. At the beginning of volcanic activity (first-period plateau basalts), this plateau was vast. Subsequently, parts of the first-period plateau basalts were uplifted and partly eroded while other parts …

Evolution Of And Factors Controlling Eocene Sedimentation In The Darende-Balaban Basin, Malatya (Eastern Turkey), Kemal Gürbüz, Murat Gül Jan 2005

Evolution Of And Factors Controlling Eocene Sedimentation In The Darende-Balaban Basin, Malatya (Eastern Turkey), Kemal Gürbüz, Murat Gül

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Collision of the Arabian and Anatolian plates affected evolution of basins located along the southern flank of the Anatolian Plate. The Darende-Balaban foreland basin is one such basin – a basin filled with Upper Cretaceous and Eocene sediments, accumulated unconformably and transgressively above ophiolitic and carbonate basement rocks. This basin is locally surrounded, to the north and south, by Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous structural highs created by tectonic elements during the collision of Arabia and Anatolia. This paper aims to describe the factors controlling and evolution of the Eocene sedimentation in the Darende-Balaban basin. The basin fill comprises two distinct sequences …

One-Dimensional Dynamical Systems And Benford's Law, Arno Berger, Leonid A. Bunimovich, Theodore P. Hill Jan 2005

One-Dimensional Dynamical Systems And Benford's Law, Arno Berger, Leonid A. Bunimovich, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

Near a stable fixed point at 0 or ∞, many real-valued dynamical systems follow Benford's law: under iteration of a map T the proportion of values in {x, T(x), T2(x), ... , Tn(x)} with mantissa (base b) less than t tends to logbt for all t in [1,b) as n→ ∞, for all integer bases b>1. In particular, the orbits under most power, exponential, and rational functions (or any successive combination thereof), follow Benford's law for almost all sufficiently large initial values. For linearly-dominated systems, convergence to Benford's distribution …

Price Waterhouse V. Hopkins: A Personal Account Of A Sexual Discrimination Plaintiff, Ann Hopkins Jan 2005

Price Waterhouse V. Hopkins: A Personal Account Of A Sexual Discrimination Plaintiff, Ann Hopkins

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

Former Supreme Court plaintiff Ann Hopkins ruminates on the circumstances that led to the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins. She writes about why the case succeeded, what happened after she returned to Price Waterhouse, and what changed for her after the litigation. A fascinating account, she ends her piece by offering advice to those who seek to combat workplace discrimination.

Making Title Vii Law And Policy: The Supreme Court's Sexual Harassment Jursiprudence, Ronald Turner Jan 2005

Making Title Vii Law And Policy: The Supreme Court's Sexual Harassment Jursiprudence, Ronald Turner

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

Professor Turner's article focuses on judicial lawmaking and policy-making in an important area of antidiscrimination law - the statutory prohibition of workplace sexual harassment found in Title VII. The article highlights the ways in which the Supreme Court's interpretation and application of Title VII's ban on sex discrimination are contrary to, and fly in the face of the judges-should-make-no-law axiom.

(2005) Talking Globally, David K. Kennedy Jan 2005

(2005) Talking Globally, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

Talking Globally is an annotated transcript of a discussion conducted by myself in a fifth grade classroom in a public school in an affluent suburban town in the northeast U.S. The stimulus for the discussion was a brief text, taken from Kofi Anan’s We The Peoples: The Role of the United Nations in the 21st Century, which offers a brief, vivid statistical picture of the planetary distribution of resources. In response, the students generated 14 questions, which ranged across a broad variety of topics, including the national debt, US weapons development and production, the war in Iraq, and the …

The Impact Of A Parasitic Gill Copepod On The Demography Of A Reef Fish Host, Rachel Jeanne Mahr Petrik-Finley Jan 2005

The Impact Of A Parasitic Gill Copepod On The Demography Of A Reef Fish Host, Rachel Jeanne Mahr Petrik-Finley

Open Access Dissertations

I examined the demographic impacts of the parasitic copepod Pharodes tortugensis that infects the gill cavities of small reef-associated fish. Laboratory and observational field studies were used to address questions concerning the distribution of the parasite in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), the physical damage and differences in body condition, growth and mortality caused by the parasite. Transmission of the parasite in a free living host population was examined using spatial analysis. P. tortugensis was found infecting three congeneric gobies in the BVI: bridled gobies, Coryphopterus glaucofraenum, colon gobies, C. dicrus, and palid gobies, C. eidolon. During 2001-2004, the parasite …

Cost-Effective Land Development With A Spatially Realistic Ecosystem Constraint, Dana Marie Bauer Jan 2005

Cost-Effective Land Development With A Spatially Realistic Ecosystem Constraint, Dana Marie Bauer

Open Access Dissertations

Exurban communities at the urban-rural fringe are increasingly experiencing conflict as conservationists and developers compete for a limited quantity of land. The study presented here developed a spatially-realistic conceptual framework that combines metapopulation theory, landscape ecology, land-use planning, and resource economics in order to determine the socially-desired allocation of development and preservation across an exurban landscape. The problem is one in which a social planner (e.g., town planner or regional planning council) maximizes the benefits from development subject to an ecosystem constraint that guarantees the socially-determined long-term probability of metapopulation persistence for one or more target species. Sensitivity analysis highlights …

Absorption And Backscattering In The Beaufort And Chukchi Seas, Jian Wang, Glenn F. Cota, David A. Ruble Jan 2005

Absorption And Backscattering In The Beaufort And Chukchi Seas, Jian Wang, Glenn F. Cota, David A. Ruble

CCPO Publications

Bio-optical observations were made during August 2000 in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. Chlorophyll a concentration (Chl) ranged from 0.068 to 18.5 mg chl m-3. Both total particulate and phytoplankton absorption at 443 nm were closely correlated with chlorophyll concentration. Linear spectral relationships were observed for phytoplankton absorption. The chlorophyll-specific absorption of phytoplankton at 443 nm was nearly constant at 0.013 m2 (mg chl)-1, but particulate absorption due to nonpigmented particulates at 443 nm was highly variable. There was no strong correlation between chlorophyll concentration and absorption by soluble materials or nonpigmented particulates. Absorption, scattering, …

Bio-Inspired Approaches For Critical Infrastructure Protection: Application Of Clonal Selection Principle For Intrusion Detection And Facts Placement, Kasthurirangan Parthasarathy Jan 2005

Bio-Inspired Approaches For Critical Infrastructure Protection: Application Of Clonal Selection Principle For Intrusion Detection And Facts Placement, Kasthurirangan Parthasarathy

Masters Theses

"In this research, Clonal Selection, an immune system inspired approach, is utilized along with Evolutionary Algorithms to solve complex engineering problems such as Intrusion Detection and optimization of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device placement in a power grid. The clonal selection principle increases the strength of good solutions and alters their properties to find better solutions in a problem space. A special class of evolutionary algorithms that utilizes the clonal selection principle to guide its heuristic search process is termed Clonal EA. Clonal EAs can be used to solve complex pattern recognition and function optimization problems, which involve searching …

Re-Membering Law In The Internationalizing World, Vivian Grosswald Curran Jan 2005

Re-Membering Law In The Internationalizing World, Vivian Grosswald Curran

Hofstra Law Review

This article examines some of the challenges to understanding new, non-national legal configurations as contexts of origin color understandings and evaluations of legal standards allegedly shared across legal communities. It examines a case on assisted suicide, Pretty v. U.K., decided by the European Court of Human Rights. The case illustrates mechanisms of legal integration in the European court, followed by a process of dis-integration that occurred when the decision was reported to the French legal community. The French rendition reflected a legal community's inability to process common law information through civil law cognitive grids. The article addresses both the capacity …

The Use Of Culmen Length To Determine Sex Of The American White Pelican, Brian S. Dorr, D. Tommy King, Patrick Gerard, Marilyn G. Spalding Jan 2005

The Use Of Culmen Length To Determine Sex Of The American White Pelican, Brian S. Dorr, D. Tommy King, Patrick Gerard, Marilyn G. Spalding

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Culmnen length has been suggested as being diagnostic for sex in the American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos). However, the literature on the use of culmen length to determine sex is inconsistent, with reported overlap in culmen lengths for males and females ranging from 1 mm to >120 mm. Morphological measurements from 188 American White Pelicans collected in Mississippi and Louisiana whose sex was determined by dissection and gonadal inspection were measured. The use of culmen length alone was used to determine gender for this sample by establishing the minimum obsewed culmen length for males and the maximum observed …
