Perspectives On Decisionmaking From The Blackmun Papers: The Cases On Arbitrability Of Statutory Claims, Ellen E. Deason Nov 2005

Perspectives On Decisionmaking From The Blackmun Papers: The Cases On Arbitrability Of Statutory Claims, Ellen E. Deason

Missouri Law Review

Judges' decisions must rank among the most documented types of decisionmaking. At the appellate level, in particular, the arguments made to judges are a matter of record and the decisions are recorded in written opinions that provide a reasoned explanation. Yet there are many unknowns about this decisionmaking process. This article draws on information found in the Blackmun Papers collection at the Library of Congress to explore Supreme Court decisionmaking as illustrated in the series of cases that opened the door to welcome arbitration of statutory claims. I The cases brought about the weakening and eventual abrogation of a long-standing …

Geometrical Problems In Engineering Mechanics, Feraydune Kashefi, Mostafa Ghandehari Nov 2005

Geometrical Problems In Engineering Mechanics, Feraydune Kashefi, Mostafa Ghandehari

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

Four problems in two dimensional geometry are presented, which are applicable to education of the basic courses, statics. These problems represent geometrical concepts that are understandable by engineering students. For example, consider a triangle made from a uniform rod. If we draw the inscribed circle of this triangle, and concentrate the weight of each side on the point at which in circle touches the side, center of the gravity of the three concentrated masses is located at the center.

Querying Microarray Databases, Zoe Alexandra Raja Nov 2005

Querying Microarray Databases, Zoe Alexandra Raja

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Microarray technology has rapidly taken a key position among bioinformatics research tools. After the completion of the Human Genome Project, microarray databases have become particularly important to the management and analysis of genomic data. These databases are ideal tools for many research areas involving gene expression patterns under different experimental conditions. This work attempts to assess the querying capabilities of current public microarray database implementations by evaluating their data management, query interfaces, and results presentation. We are not aware of any comparative study available to date that evaluates this important class of biological databases. We examine and evaluate how several …

Repclass: Cluster And Grid Enabled Automatic Classification Of Transposable Elements Identified De Novo In Genome Sequences, Nirmal Ranganathan

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In the last few years many computer and laboratory improvements in the production and analysis of DNA sequences have made possible the complete sequencing of whole genomes. This provides us with a wealth of raw genomes that needs to be processed and annotated. 5% to 80% of eukaryotic genomes contain repetitive DNA consisting of transposable elements and tandem repeats which needs to be identified, classified and annotated in order to sequence and annotate the entire genome accurately. Existing tools allow us to identify and annotate transposable elements (TE) but no tool exists for their classification. This thesis work introduces REPCLASS …

Application Of Graph-Based Data Mining To Biological Networks, Chang Hun You

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

A huge amount of biological data has been generated by long-term research. It is time to start to focus on a system-level understanding of bio-systems. Biological networks are networks of biochemical reactions, containing various objects and their relationships. Understanding of biological networks is a starting point of systems biology. Multi-relational data mining finds the relational patterns in both the entity attributes and relations in the data. A widely used representation for relational data is a graph consisting of vertices and edges between these vertices. Graph-based data mining, as one approach of multi-relational data mining, finds relational patterns in a graph …

Adaptive Agent Communities For Providing Services In Dynamic Networks, Nayantara Mallesh

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

New network applications are being created everyday to accommodate diverse user needs. Delivering services to the user in a timely manner taking into account network conditions, resources allocated and network load is a challenge. Multiprotocol Label Switching attempts to overcome best-effort service by providing a method for routing traffic around network congestion, resource reservation and quality of service (QoS) capabilities. IntServ and DiffServ are two other QoS models in use today. IntServ provides per-flow guarantee of quality while DiffServ is based on aggregate service classes. Adaptive Network Service (ANS) is a community of adaptive, collaborating agents residing in the network …

Multi-Dimensional Indexing For Xml Data, Do Youn Kim Nov 2005

Multi-Dimensional Indexing For Xml Data, Do Youn Kim

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is becoming a dominant standard for exchanging and retrieving data over the internet. As XML in data exchanging grows, various XML indexing techniques have been proposed for fast and efficient query processing. A survey of theses techniques [9] categorized them into sequence-based indexes, structural indexes, dimension-based indexes and keyword-based indexes based on their properties. In this thesis, we focus on the multi-dimensional XML indexing; more precisely, it can be categorized as a 2-dimension based indexing, which is used in this paper. We studied the properties of multi-dimensional XML indexing and created an implementation to evaluate …

Adaptive, Multimodal, Application Independent User Interfaces For People With Disabilites Using Computers, Padmapriya Sambath Nov 2005

Adaptive, Multimodal, Application Independent User Interfaces For People With Disabilites Using Computers, Padmapriya Sambath

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The goal of this thesis is to create more adaptive and flexible user interfaces for people with disabilities and presenting information to everyone and on every device at any time. Delivering information at any time leads to situations such as a person walking with a mobile device having a small screen wanting to make a flight reservation. The intention of presenting information to everybody immediately raises the question of how much of the available information reach people with disabilities. We have suggested a content based user interface language that may be used by external services to interact with the user. …

Service Discovery By Automated Structural And Semantic Matching, Alan Walker Nov 2005

Service Discovery By Automated Structural And Semantic Matching, Alan Walker

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Pervasive computing systems need to locate and use services dynamically. Current models of service location and interaction rely on a fixed contract, or service description, located by name and/or a combination of keywords. This implies a priori agreement on the service description, leading to fragility and the inability for systems to interoperate unless they were built to match an existing standard. This thesis implements a technique for relaxing the fixed contract assumption, so that the nearest match amongst a set of services can be located. The system takes into account structural, data type and naming differences. The naming differences are …

Supramolecular Nanostructures Based On Calixarenes, Heng Xu Nov 2005

Supramolecular Nanostructures Based On Calixarenes, Heng Xu

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation describes a systematic approach towards the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of calixarene-based supramolecular nanostructures. Chapter 1 briefly overviews the field of supramolecular chemistry and highlights its horizons. Chapter 2 introduces a modular strategy towards synthesis of nanoscale receptor macromolecules--calix-peptide conjugates. This strategy combines the unique host-guest capabilities of calixarene chemistry with synthetically flexible peptide synthesis. A series of calixarene amino acids was prepared and further utilized to synthesize calixarene dipeptides. Through this approach, calixarene amino acids are now available to be incorporated into peptide networks and nanostructured biologically relevant materials. Chapter 3 demonstrates supramolecular applications of calixarene-peptide …

On The Salience Of Novel Stimuli: Adaptation And Image Noise, Mark F. Fairchild, Garrett M. Johnson Nov 2005

On The Salience Of Novel Stimuli: Adaptation And Image Noise, Mark F. Fairchild, Garrett M. Johnson

Presentations and other scholarship

Webster has proposed “that adaptation increases the salience of novel stimuli by partially discounting the ambient background.” This is an excellent, concise, description of the purpose and function of chromatic adaptation in image reproduction applications. However, Webster was not limiting this proposal to just chromatic adaptation, but rather using it as a general description for all forms of perceptual adaptation. Demonstrations of adaption to other properties of image displays such as motion, blur, and spatial frequency led the authors to ponder the question of whether observers might adapt to the noise structure in images to enhance the novel stimuli — …

Evidence For Native-Defect Donors In N-Type Zno, David C. Look, Gary C. Farlow, Pakpoom Reunchan, Sukit Limpijumnong, S. B. Zhang, K. Nordlund

Physics Faculty Publications

Recent theory has found that native defects such as the O vacancy VO and Zn interstitial ZnI have high formation energies in n-type ZnO and, thus, are not important donors, especially in comparison to impurities such as H. In contrast, we use both theory and experiment to show that, under N ambient, the complex ZnI-NO is a stronger candidate than H or any other known impurity for a 30 meV donor commonly found in bulk ZnO grown from the vapor phase. Since the Zn vacancy is also the dominant acceptor in such material, we must …

A Credit Mechanism For Selecting A Unique Competitive Equilibrium, Cheng-Zhong Qin, Martin Shubik Nov 2005

A Credit Mechanism For Selecting A Unique Competitive Equilibrium, Cheng-Zhong Qin, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The enlargement of the general-equilibrium structure to allow default subject to penalties to appririate credit limits and default penalties results in a construction of a simple mechanism for a credit using society. We show that there generically exists a price-normalizing bundle that determines a credit money along with appropriate credit limmits and default penalties for a credit mechanism to select a unique competitive equilibrium (CE). With some additional conditions, a common credit money can be applied such that any CE can be a unique selection by the credit mechanism with appropriate credit limits default penalties for the traders. This will …

Detection Of Covert Channel Encoding In Network Packet Delays, Vincent Berk, Annarita Giani, George Cybenko Nov 2005

Detection Of Covert Channel Encoding In Network Packet Delays, Vincent Berk, Annarita Giani, George Cybenko

Computer Science Technical Reports

Covert channels are mechanisms for communicating information in ways that are difficult to detect. Data exfiltration can be an indication that a computer has been compromised by an attacker even when other intrusion detection schemes have failed to detect a successful attack. Covert timing channels use packet inter-arrival times, not header or payload embedded information, to encode covert messages. This paper investigates the channel capacity of Internet-based timing channels and proposes a methodology for detecting covert timing channels based on how close a source comes to achieving that channel capacity. A statistical approach is then used for the special case …

New Symplectic 4-Manifolds With B+=1, Scott Baldridge Nov 2005

New Symplectic 4-Manifolds With B+=1, Scott Baldridge

Faculty Publications

In 1995 Dusa McDuff and Dietmar Salamon conjectured the existence of symplectic 4-manifolds (X, ω) which satisfy b = 1, K = 0, K · ω > 0, and which fail to be of Lefschetz type. This is equivalent to finding a symplectic, homology T × S manifold with nontorsion canonical class and a cohomology ring which is not isomorphic to the cohomology ring of T × S . They needed such examples to complete a list of possible symplectic 4-manifolds with b = 1. In that same year Tian-Jun Li and Ai-ko Liu, working from a different point of view, …

Further Remarks On Strict Input-To-State Stable Lyapunov Functions For Time-Varying Systems, Michael Malisoff, Frédéric Mazenc Nov 2005

Further Remarks On Strict Input-To-State Stable Lyapunov Functions For Time-Varying Systems, Michael Malisoff, Frédéric Mazenc

Faculty Publications

We study the stability properties of a class of time-varying non-linear systems. We assume that non-strict input-to-state stable (ISS) Lyapunov functions for our systems are given and posit a mild persistency of excitation condition on our given Lyapunov functions which guarantee the existence of strict ISS Lyapunov functions for our systems. Next, we provide simple direct constructions of explicit strict ISS Lyapunov functions for our systems by applying an integral smoothing method. We illustrate our constructions using a tracking problem for a rotating rigid body. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

On Static And Dynamic Partitioning Behavior Of Large-Scale Networks, Derek Leonard, Zhongmei Yao, Xiaoming Wang, Dmitri Loguinov

Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this paper, we analyze the problem of network disconnection in the context of large-scale P2P networks and understand how both static and dynamic patterns of node failure affect the resilience of such graphs. We start by applying classical results from random graph theory to show that a large variety of deterministic and random P2P graphs almost surely (i.e., with probability 1-o(1)) remain connected under random failure if and only if they have no isolated nodes. This simple, yet powerful, result subsequently allows us to derive in closed-form the probability that a P2P network develops isolated nodes, and therefore partitions, …

A Bayesian Subset Analysis Of Sensory Evaluation Data, Balgobin Nandram Nov 2005

A Bayesian Subset Analysis Of Sensory Evaluation Data, Balgobin Nandram

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In social sciences it is easy to carry out sensory experiments using say a J-point hedonic scale. One major problem with the J-point hedonic scale is that a conversion from the category scales to numeric scores might not be sensible because the panelists generally view increments on the hedonic scale as psychologically unequal. In the current problem several products are rated by a set of panelists on the J-point hedonic scale. One objective is to select the best subset of products and to assess the quality of the products by estimating the mean and standard deviation response …

Estimating The Slope Of Simple Linear Regression In The Presence Of Outliers, Mohammed Al-Haj Ebrahem, Amjad D. Al-Nasser Nov 2005

Estimating The Slope Of Simple Linear Regression In The Presence Of Outliers, Mohammed Al-Haj Ebrahem, Amjad D. Al-Nasser

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In this article, an estimation procedure to simple linear regression in the presence of outliers is proposed. The performance of the proposed estimator, the AM estimator, is compared with other traditional estimators: least squares, Theil type repeated median, and geometric mean. A numerical example is given to illustrate the proposed estimator. Simulation results indicate that the proposed estimator is accurate and has a high precision in the presence of outliers.

Selection Of Independent Binary Features Using Probabilities: An Example From Veterinary Medicine, Ludmila I. Kuncheva, Zoë S.J. Hoare, Peter D. Cockcroft

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Supervised classification into c mutually exclusive classes based on n binary features is considered. The only information available is an n×c table with probabilities. Knowing that the best d features are not the d best, simulations were run for 4 feature selection methods and an application to diagnosing BSE in cattle and Scrapie in sheep is presented.

Training Statisticians To Be Alert To The Dangers Of Misapplying Statistical Methods, Vance W. Berger Nov 2005

Training Statisticians To Be Alert To The Dangers Of Misapplying Statistical Methods, Vance W. Berger

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Statisticians are faced with a variety of challenges. Their ability to cope successfully with these challenges depends, in large part, on the quality of their training. It is not the purpose of this article to present a comprehensive training plan that will overhaul the standard curriculum a statistician might follow under current training regimens (i.e., in a degree program). Rather, the objective is to point out important areas that appear to be under-represented in standard curricula and correspondingly overlooked too often in practice. The hope is that these areas might be better integrated into the training of the next generation …

Power Of The T Test For Normal And Mixed Normal Distributions, Marilyn S. Thompson, Samuel B. Green, Yi-Hsin Chen, Shawn Stockford, Wen-Juo Lo Nov 2005

Power Of The T Test For Normal And Mixed Normal Distributions, Marilyn S. Thompson, Samuel B. Green, Yi-Hsin Chen, Shawn Stockford, Wen-Juo Lo

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Previous research suggests that the power of the independent-samples t test decreases when population distributions are mixed normal rather than normal, and that robust methods have superior power under these conditions. However, under some conditions, the power for the independent-samples t test can be greater when the population distributions for the independent groups are mixed normal rather than normal. The implications of these results are discussed.
