The anisotropic thermal expansion of a single crystal of KLu WO4 2 KLuW , obtained by the top-seeded solution growth method, has been investigated over a wide temperature range 50– 600 °C . The linear thermal-expansion tensor has been determined and its principal X, Y, and Z axes are in the 705 , 010 , and 107 crystallographic directions, respectively. The principal thermal-expansion coefficients I, II, and III are 12.8 10−6, 7.8 10−6, and 22.2 10−6 K−1, respectively. The principal axis with maximum thermal expansion Z with III=22.2 10−6 is located at 10.37° from the c axis. In comparison with …
Queuing Systems With Multiple Fbm-Based Traffic Models, Mihaela Teodora Matache, Valentin Matache
Queuing Systems With Multiple Fbm-Based Traffic Models, Mihaela Teodora Matache, Valentin Matache
Mathematics Faculty Publications
A multiple fractional Brownian motion (FBM)-based traffic model is considered. Various lower bounds for the overflow probability of the associated queueing system are obtained. Based on a probabilistic bound for the busy period of an ATM queueing system associated with a multiple FBM-based input traffic, a minimal dynamic buffer allocation function (DBAF) is obtained and a DBAF-allocation algorithm is designed. The purpose is to create an upper bound for the queueing system associated with the traffic. This upper bound, called a DBAF, is a function of time, dynamically bouncing with the traffic. An envelope process associated with the multiple FBM-based …
Asynchronous Random Boolean Network Model Based On Elementary Cellular Automata Rule 126, Mihaela Teodora Matache, Jack Heidel
Asynchronous Random Boolean Network Model Based On Elementary Cellular Automata Rule 126, Mihaela Teodora Matache, Jack Heidel
Mathematics Faculty Publications
This paper considers a simple Boolean network with N nodes, each node’s state at time tbeing determined by a certain number k of parent nodes, which is fixed for all nodes. The nodes, with randomly assigned neighborhoods, are updated based on various asynchronous schemes. We make use of a Boolean rule that is a generalization of rule 126 of elementary cellular automata. We provide formulas for the probability of finding a node in state 1 at a time t for the class of asynchronous random Boolean networks (ARBN) in which only one node is updated at every time step, and …

Operator Self-Similar Processes On Banach Spaces, Mihaela Teodora Matache, Valentin Matache
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Operator self-similar (OSS) stochastic processes on arbitrary Banach spaces are considered. If the family of expectations of such a process is a spanning subset of the space, it is proved that the scaling family of operators of the process under consideration is a uniquely determinedmultiplicative group of operators. If the expectation-function of the process is continuous, it is proved that the expectations of the process have power-growth with exponent greater than or equal to 0, that is, their norm is less than a nonnegative constant times such a power-function, provided that the linear space spanned by the expectations has category …

Dielectric Properties And Maxwell-Wagner Relaxation Of Compounds Acu3ti4o12 (A=Ca,Bi2/3,Y2/3,La2/3), Jianjun Liu, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, Robert W. Smith, John R. Hardy
Physics Faculty Publications
We have studied the frequency and temperature dependences of permittivity and impedance of the compounds ACu3Ti4O12 A=Ca, Bi2/3, Y2/3, La2/3 in the ranges of 10−1–106 Hz and −150–200 °C. All compounds investigated display similar dielectric properties. Specifically, they all have a Debye-like relaxation and their dielectric constants are independent of frequency and temperature over a wide range. They all have two electrical responses in impedance formalism, indicating that there are two distinct contributions. We attribute them to grains and grain boundaries in the ceramic samples and explain the dielectric behaviors by Maxwell-Wagner relaxation arising at the interfaces between grains and …

We studied temperature dependence of complex capacitance, impedance, and polarized Raman spectra of single crystal Cs2Nb4O11. First, we observed a sharp λ-shaped peak at 165 °C in the complex capacitance, then found drastic changes in the Raman spectra in the same temperature range. Utilizing the pseudosymmetry search of structure space group, we attributed the observed anomalies to a structural change from the room temperature orthorhombic Pnn2 to another orthorhombic Imm2. We also measured room temperature polarized Raman spectra in different symmetries of normal vibrations and assigned high wavenumber Raman bands to the …
Cmodels – Sat-Based Disjunctive Answer Set Solver, Yuliya Lierler
Cmodels – Sat-Based Disjunctive Answer Set Solver, Yuliya Lierler
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Disjunctive logic programming under the stable model semantics [GL91] is a new methodology called answer set programming (ASP) for solving combinatorial search problems. This programming method uses answer set solvers, such as DLV [Lea05], GNT [Jea05], SMODELS [SS05], ASSAT [LZ02], CMODELS [Lie05a]. Systems DLV and GNT are more general as they work with the class of disjunctive logic programs, while other systems cover only normal programs. DLV is uniquely designed to find the answer sets for disjunctive logic programs. On the other hand, GNT first generates possible stable model candidates and then tests the candidate on the minimality using system …

Cmodels For Tight Disjunctive Logic Programs, Yuliya Lierler
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Disjunctive logic programming under the stable model semantics [GL91] is a new answer set programming (ASP) methodology for solving combinatorial search problems. It is a form of declarative programming related to logic programming languages, such as Prolog, where the solutions to a problem are represented by answer sets, and not by answer substitutions produced in response to a query as in convential logic programming. Instead of Prolog systems, this programming method uses answer set solvers, such as smodels1, smodelscc2, cmodels3, dlv4, and gnt1. These systems made it possible for ASP to be successfully applied in such areas as planning, bounded …

Background: Nonhuman primates (NHPs) are essential for biomedical research due to their similarities to humans. The utility of NHPs will be greatly increased by the application of genomicsbased approaches such as gene expression profiling. Sequence information from the 3' end of genes is the key resource needed to create oligonucleotide expression arrays.
Results: We have developed the algorithms and procedures necessary to quickly acquire sequence information from the 3' end of nonhuman primate orthologs of human genes. To accomplish this, we identified terminal exons of over 15,000 human genes by aligning mRNA sequences with genomic sequence. We found …

Adaptive Decision Support For Academic Course Scheduling Using Intelligent Software Agents, Prithviraj Dasgupta, Deepak Khazanchi
Adaptive Decision Support For Academic Course Scheduling Using Intelligent Software Agents, Prithviraj Dasgupta, Deepak Khazanchi
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Academic course scheduling is a complex operation that requires the interaction between different users including instructors and course schedulers to satisfy conflicting constraints in an optimal manner. Traditionally, this problem has been addressed as a constraint satisfaction problem where the constraints are stationary over time. In this paper, we address academic course scheduling as a dynamic decision support problem using an agent-enabled adaptive decision support system. In this paper, we describe the Intelligent Agent Enabled Decision Support (IAEDS) system, which employs software agents to assist humans in making strategic decisions under dynamic and uncertain conditions. The IAEDS system has a …

Multi-Objective Mobile Agent Routing In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ramesh Rajagopalan, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Pramod Varshney, Kishan Mehrotra
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
A recent approach for data fusion in wireless sensor networks involves the use of mobile agents that selectively visit the sensors and incrementally fuse the data, thereby eliminating the unnecessary transmission of irrelevant or non-critical data. The order of sensors visited along the route determines the quality of the fused data and the communication cost. We model the mobile agent routing problem as a multi-objective optimization problem, maximizing the total detected signal energy while minimizing the energy consumption and path loss. Simulation results show that this problem can be solved successfully using evolutionary multi-objective algorithms such as EMOCA and NSGA-II. …

Determination Of Trifluoroacetate By Ion Chromatography For Snow And Ice Analysis, Jon Hanson
Determination Of Trifluoroacetate By Ion Chromatography For Snow And Ice Analysis, Jon Hanson
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Trifluoroacetic acid (TEA) is a product of the atmospheric degradation of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). HCFCs and HFCs are widely used substitutes for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that have been found to contribute to the loss of stratospheric ozone. Deposits of TEA with precipitation (rain and snow) can lead to its presence and accumulation in the aquatic and cryosphere environments, with unknown long-term environmental consequences. Investigation on TEA impact and its fate in the environment requires sensitive, accurate, and fast analytical methods. The determination of trace concentrations of TEA using the technique of ion chromatography (IC) is investigated in this study, …
Unruly Complexity: Ecology, Interpretation, Engagement, Peter Taylor
Unruly Complexity: Ecology, Interpretation, Engagement, Peter Taylor
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publication Series
Ambitiously identifying fresh issues in the study of complex systems, Peter J. Taylor, in a model of interdisciplinary exploration, makes these concerns accessible to scholars in the fields of ecology, environmental science, and science studies. Unruly Complexity explores concepts used to deal with complexity in three realms: ecology and socio-environmental change; the collective constitution of knowledge; and the interpretations of science as they influence subsequent research.
For each realm Taylor shows that unruly complexity-situations that lack definite boundaries, where what goes on "outside" continually restructures what is "inside," and where diverse processes come together to produce change-should not be suppressed …

We discuss techniques for managing and visualizing x-ray diffraction spectrum data for thin film composition spreads which map large fractions of ternary compositional phase diagrams. An in-house x-ray microdiffractometer is used to obtain spectra from over 500 different compositions on an individual spread. The MATLAB software is used to quickly organize the data and create various plots from which one can quickly grasp different information regarding structural and phase changes across the composition spreads. Such exercises are valuable in rapidly assessing the “overall” picture of the structural evolution across phase diagrams before focusing in on specific composition regions for detailed …

We have fabricated Fe∕Sm–Co bilayers with gradient Fe thicknesses in order to systematically study the dependence of exchange coupling on the thickness of the Fe layer. The Fe layer was deposited at two different temperatures (150 and 300°C) to study the effect of deposition temperature on the exchange coupling. Magneto-optical Kerr effect and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) have been employed as nondestructive rapid characterization tools to map the magnetic properties of the gradient samples. Systematic enhancement in exchange coupling between the soft layer and the hard layer is observed as the soft layer thickness is decreased. Separate exchange couplings …

Are Two Knaves Better Than One? Every Man A Knave: Hume, Buchanan, And Musgrave's View On Economics And Government, Andrew Farrant, Maria Pia Paganelli
Economics Faculty Research
It is commonplace to view market agents as self-interested knaves, while government agents are either as knaves or public-spirited angels. What are the consequences of these different motivational assumptions in modeling governmental and market behavior? We compare David Hume, James M. Buchanan, and Richard Musgrave. We claim that Hume, the only one thinking consistently in terms of the worst-case, offers a second best solution for both the government and the economy, which may turn out to be the best possible solution given human nature. Because of the reciprocal check, two knaves are better than one. More is preferred to less …

Geometry Of Jump Systems, Vadim Lyubashevsky, Chad Newell, Vadim Ponomarenko
Mathematics Faculty Research
A jump system is a set of lattice points satisfying a certain "two-step" axiom. We present a variety of results concerning the geometry of these objects, including a characterization of two-dimensional jump systems, necessary (though not sufficient) properties of higher-dimensional jump systems, and a characterization of constant-sum jump systems.
Navy Personnel Planning And The Optimal Partition, Allen G. Holder
Navy Personnel Planning And The Optimal Partition, Allen G. Holder
Mathematics Faculty Research
One could argue that the Navy's most important resource is its personnel, and as such, workforce planning is a crucial task. We investigate a new model and solution technique that is designed to aid in optimizing the process of assigning sailors to jobs. This procedure attempts to achieve an increased level of sailor satisfaction by providing a list of possible jobs from which a sailor may choose. We show that the optimal partition provided by an interior-point algorithm is particularly useful when designing the job lists. This follows because a strictly complementary solution to the linear programming relaxation observes all …

Over The Top: From The Tragic To The Comic In Corneille, Nina Ekstein
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
The notions of tragedy and comedy that one can intuit from the theater of Corneille are markedly different from those found in other authors of the period. This is but one aspect of a larger issue concerning Corneille's placement in the hallowed pantheon of literary history. He is one of the major canonical authors and yet he often disconcerts. He was one of the principal theorists of drama in the seventeenth century and yet he took a number of stands in direct and lonely opposition to his peers. Alain Couprie points out that Corneille "a toujours été un auteur suspect," …
Decision Support For Watershed Management Using Evolutionary Algorithms, Misgana K. Muleta, John W. Nicklow
Decision Support For Watershed Management Using Evolutionary Algorithms, Misgana K. Muleta, John W. Nicklow
Civil and Environmental Engineering
An integrative computational methodology is developed for the management of nonpoint source pollution from watersheds. The associated decision support system is based on an interface between evolutionary algorithms (EAs) and a comprehensive watershed simulation model, and is capable of identifying optimal or near-optimal land use patterns to satisfy objectives. Specifically, a genetic algorithm (GA) is linked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for single objective evaluations, and a Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm has been integrated with SWAT for multiobjective optimization. The model can be operated at a small spatial scale, such as a farm …

Positive Operators And Maximum Principles For Ordinary Differential Equations, Paul W. Eloe
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We show an equivalence between a classical maximum principle in differential equations and positive operators on Banach Spaces. Then we shall exhibit many types of boundary value problems for which the maximum principle is valid. Finally, we shall present extended applications of the maximum principle that have arisen with the continued study of the qualitative properties of Green’s functions.
