Effects Of Human Disturbances On The Behavior Of Wintering Ducks, Melissa L. Pease, Robert K. Rose, Mark J. Butler Jan 2005

Effects Of Human Disturbances On The Behavior Of Wintering Ducks, Melissa L. Pease, Robert K. Rose, Mark J. Butler

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Human activity causes wintering waterfowl to expend energy to avoid humans at a time in their annual cycle when energy conservation is important to survival, migration, and breeding reserves. Understanding the effects of recreational activities on waterfowl is important to managing natural resource areas where migratory birds depend on wetland habitat for resting and feeding. We investigated responses of 7 species of dabbling ducks to 5 different experimental human activities, (a pedestrian, a bicyclist, a truck traveling at 2 different speeds, and an electric passenger tram). Responses of ducks depended on type of disturbance, species, and distance from disturbances. Most …

From Imperial China To Cyberspace: Contracting Without The State, David D. Friedman Jan 2005

From Imperial China To Cyberspace: Contracting Without The State, David D. Friedman

Faculty Publications

In 1895, as part of the treaty of Shimonoseki, China ceded the island of Taiwan to Japan. The Japanese government wished to maintain the existing legal system; in order to do so it had to discover what that legal system was.

One feature of that legal system was the combination of elaborate contractual practice with an almost total absence of contract law. Imperial China had no equivalent of our civil lawsuits. A merchant who had sold goods on credit and not been paid could, if he wished, report his debtor to the district magistrate for the crime of swindling him-but …

A Critique Of The Urban Mission Of The Church In The Light Of An Emerging Postmodern Condition, Kleber De Oliveira Goncalves Jan 2005

A Critique Of The Urban Mission Of The Church In The Light Of An Emerging Postmodern Condition, Kleber De Oliveira Goncalves

Dissertations

The world is becoming an urban society. The urban expansion witnessed during the twentieth century and continuing into the twenty-first century is unprecedented in the history of the human civilization. Simultaneously, the Western world faces the paradigm shift from the modern era to a postmodern condition. Both movements have remarkable implications for the mission of the church in urbanized, postmodernizing societies. Shaped by the modern worldview, the church is now further ostracized by the postmodern condition.

While the literature of urban mission has grown in the past few years, very little consideration has been given to the particular issues and …

Revealing The Key To Success In Science...Doodling : A Study On The Importance Of Art In Science, Jessica Jennette

Honors Capstones

The hypothesis is that Art, as a learning tool and creative process, actually improves a student’s basic skills in Science. When incorporated into the curriculum, art projects that are directly related to the science subject matter help students understand the material and improve their skills and thinking processes. Research includes: historical evidence of intelligence strengthened by an art and science background, current art processes that are related to adolescent performance or development in school, published pieces concerning the connections between art and science, and studies on cognitive development in the brain that are influenced by art- science interactions. Additional interviews …

Building The Ideal Undergraduate Operations Management Curriculum : A Survey Of Employers, Brad Orsucci

Honors Capstones

The needs of the business community are always changing. The goal of this study is to determine what those needs are and develop a curriculum that satisfies to those needs. To gather the information needed, we created an online survey and asked employers of operations management and information systems majors to complete the survey. The survey consisted of questions about their company, education and the importance of different courses. Many of the courses the business community felt were important were courses that had a combination of OM and IS. To meet the business communities needs we suggest that NIU develop …

Cam Controlled Walking Robot, Andrew Crow Jan 2005

Cam Controlled Walking Robot, Andrew Crow

Honors Capstones

The objective ofthis project is to create a walking robot employing a cam controlled leg. The cam controlled walker was first theorized in the Master's Thesis of Xiaonan Wan of Northern Illinois University. The principle of a cam controlled is to combine the advantages of both wheels and legs into one manipulator. The robot is constructed 'of a body with four motor driven walking pods. Each pod consisted of three cam-controlled members. The robot is capable of walking in a smooth, strait and level line, when it is activated. The robot is designed to be less than 69 centimeters and …

A Regularized And Renormalized Electrostatic Coupling Hamiltonian For Hybrid Quantum-Mechanical–Molecular-Mechanical Calculations, Pradip K. Biswas, Valentin Gogonea Jan 2005

A Regularized And Renormalized Electrostatic Coupling Hamiltonian For Hybrid Quantum-Mechanical–Molecular-Mechanical Calculations, Pradip K. Biswas, Valentin Gogonea

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We describe a regularized and renormalized electrostatic coupling Hamiltonian for hybrid quantum-mechanical (QM)–molecular-mechanical (MM) calculations. To remedy the nonphysical QM/MM Coulomb interaction at short distances arising from a point electrostatic potential (ESP) charge of the MM atom and also to accommodate the effect of polarized MM atom in the coupling Hamiltonian, we propose a partial-wave expansion of the ESP charge and describe the effect of a s-wave expansion, extended over the covalent radius rc, of the MM atom. The resulting potential describes that, at short distances, large scale cancellation of Coulomb interaction arises intrinsically from the localized expansion of the …

Historical Context And Hazardous Waste Facility Siting: Understanding Temporal Patterns In Michigan, Robin Saha, Paul Mohai Jan 2005

Historical Context And Hazardous Waste Facility Siting: Understanding Temporal Patterns In Michigan, Robin Saha, Paul Mohai

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

This article tests the proposition that, beginning in the 1970s, historic growth of public environmental concern and opposition to waste facilities, as well as changes in the policy environment increasingly encouraged hazardous waste facilities siting to follow the path of least (political) resistance and resulted in environmental inequities. Our longitudinal analysis of sitings in the State of Michigan from 1950 to 1990 reveals a distinct temporal pattern supporting our hypotheses. Whereas significant racial, socioeconomic, and housing disparities at the time of siting were not in evidence for facilities sited prior to 1970, patterns of disparate siting were found for facilities …

Modeling Global Warming Scenarios In Greenback Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Stomias) Streams: Implications For Species Recovery, Scott J. Cooney, Alan P. Covich, Paul M. Lukacs, Amy L. Harig, Kurt D. Fausch Jan 2005

Modeling Global Warming Scenarios In Greenback Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Stomias) Streams: Implications For Species Recovery, Scott J. Cooney, Alan P. Covich, Paul M. Lukacs, Amy L. Harig, Kurt D. Fausch

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Changes in global climate may exacerbate other anthropogenic stressors, accelerating the decline in distribution and abundance of rare species throughout the world. We examined the potential effects of a warming climate on the greenback cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki stomias), a resident salmonid that inhabits headwater streams of the central Rocky Mountains. Greenbacks are outcompeted at lower elevations by nonnative species of trout and currently are restricted to upper-elevation habitats where barriers to upstream migration by nonnatives are or have been established. We used likelihood-based techniques and information theoretics to select models predicting stream temperature changes for 10 streams where greenback …

Diurnal Water-Pressure Fluctuations: Timing And Pattern Of Termination Below Bench Glacier, Alaska, Usa, T. J. Fudge, Joel T. Harper, Neil Humphrey, W. Tad Pfeffer Jan 2005

Diurnal Water-Pressure Fluctuations: Timing And Pattern Of Termination Below Bench Glacier, Alaska, Usa, T. J. Fudge, Joel T. Harper, Neil Humphrey, W. Tad Pfeffer

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Observations from basal water-pressure sensors along the length of Bench Glacier, Alaska, USA, show that diurnal fluctuations of water pressure are seasonal and restricted to summer. Most notable about these fluctuations is their disappearance in the late summer and early autumn, long before the seasonal end of diurnal meltwater input. Here we present data documenting the end of diurnal water-pressure fluctuations during the 2002 and 2003 melt seasons. The end of diurnal fluctuations occurred abruptly in multiple boreholes spaced meters to kilometers apart. There was no obvious spatial progression of termination events, and a clear correlation with meteorological forcing or …

Antisymmetric Magnetoresistance In Magnetic Multilayers With Perpendicular Anisotropy, Xuemei Cheng, S. Urazhdin, O. Tchernyshyov, C. L. Chien, V. I. Nikitenko, A. J. Shapiro, R. D. Shull

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

While magnetoresistance (MR) has generally been found to be symmetric in applied field in nonmagnetic or magnetic metals, we have observed antisymmetric MR in Co/Pt multilayers. Simultaneous domain imaging and transport measurements show that antisymmetric MR is due to the appearance of domain walls that run perpendicular to both the magnetization and the current, a geometry existing only in materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. As a result, the extraordinary Hall effect gives rise to circulating currents in the vicinity of domain walls that contributes to the MR. The antisymmetric MR and extraordinary Hall effect have been quantitatively accounted for by …

Paraeducator Training: An Investigation Of Current Practice And Related Needs, Brian D Saffle Jan 2005

Paraeducator Training: An Investigation Of Current Practice And Related Needs, Brian D Saffle

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Over the past two decades an increased number of paraeducators have been hired to work with special education teachers (French & Pickett, 1997, Stanovich, 1996). There has been a concurrent shift in paraeducator responsibilities. Instead of primarily providing clerical support, paraeducators are now expected to provide instructional support to the most challenging students in the system (i.e., those with disabilities) (Giangreco, Broer, Edelman, 1999). Numerous researchers, educators, and members of professional organizations have noted concerns about the training and/or lack thereof for paraeducators (French & Pickett, 1997). Debate exists regarding whether or not paraeducators possess adequate training and skills to …

Reliability Generalization Of The California Psychological Inventory, Helen Zaikina Jan 2005

Reliability Generalization Of The California Psychological Inventory, Helen Zaikina

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The present study examined the reliability of the scores of the California Psychological Inventory (CPI). The reported reliability coefficients were located via PsycInfo and recorded into a data set. A multiple regression analysis was performed on the coefficients for the Socialization scale as well as on the three factors of the CPI. No predictors were found to be significant. The test retest reliabilities were significantly higher than the internal consistency reliabilities across all scale factors. A lack of significant results may be explained by the fact that the CPI is a multi-subscale instrument and not all of the scales are …
