Linear Groupoids And The Associated Wreath Products, J.D. Phillips
Linear Groupoids And The Associated Wreath Products, J.D. Phillips
Journal Articles
A groupoid identity is said to be linear of length 2k if the same k variables appear on both sides of the identity exactly once. We classify and count all varieties of groupoids defined by a single linear identity. For k = 3, there are 14 nontrivial varieties and they are in the most general position with respect to inclusion. Hentzel et. al. [3] showed that the linear identity (xy)z = y(zx) implies commutativity and associativity in all products of at least 5 factors. We complete their project by showing that no other linear identity of any length behaves this …

Development And Validation Of Emission Model For A Petrol Engine Using Response Surface Methodology (Rsm), Rahman Saidur, W.B. Leong, Haji Hassan Masjuki, I. Jahirul, M.R. Tamjis
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
Hydrocarbon emissions are generated from the presence of unburned fuel in the exhaust of a petrol engine. Liquid fuels contain 10 to 20 major species of hydrocarbon and some 100 to 200 minor species. Most of these species are found in the exhaust gas of a petrol engine. However, some of the exhaust hydrocarbons are not found in the parent fuel, but are hydrocarbons derived from the fuel whose structure was altered within the cylinder by incomplete chemical reaction. About 50 of the total hydrocarbons are emitted in this way. In this paper a mathematical model utilising the response surface …

Development Of Power System Analysis Software Using Object Components, K.M. Nor, Hazlie Mokhlis, H. Suyono, M. Abdel-Akher, A.H.A. Rashid, T.A. Gani
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
This paper presents experiences of developing a power system analysis software using a combination of object oriented programming (OOP) and component based development (CBD) methodologies. In this development, various power system analyses are developed into software components. These components are integrated with graphical user interface components to build up a power system analysis application. By using both OOP and CBD methodologies, updating or adding new algorithm can be done to any specific component without affecting other components inside the software. The component also can be replaced with any other better component whenever necessary. Hence, the software can be maintained and …

Remediation Of Arsenic-Contaminated Soils And Washing Effluents, Min Jang, S.H. Jung, I.C. Sang, K.P. Jae
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the distribution of various arsenic species in tailings and soils. Other specific goal of the tests were to evaluate the extraction efficiency of arsenic using alkaline or acid washing, to determine optimum operational parameters of alkaline washing, and to evaluate the arsenic precipitation of washing effluents by pH adjustment or ferric chloride addition. Alkaline washing using sodium hydroxide was found to be favorable in removing arsenic from tailings or soils having a higher portion of arsenic in the operationally defined crystalline mineral fraction of crystalline oxide and amorphous aluminosilicates. This is due to the …

Strength Estimation Model For High-Strength Concrete Incorporating Metakaolin And Silica Fume, H.A. Razak, H.S. Wong
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
A mathematical model is presented for estimating compressive strength of high-strength concrete incorporating pozzolanic materials, based on the strength of a control ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete made with similar mixture characteristics and curing history. In this study, metakaolin (MK) and silica fume (SF) were used as cement replacement materials at 5, 10, and 15 by mass. Water/cementitious materials (w/cm) ratios varied from 0.27 to 0.33, and strength testing was conducted up to an age of 180 days. It was found that the strength of a pozzolanic mixture could be related to the strength of its equivalent control by a …

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
Backscattered signal of coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy can be an extremely useful tool for remote identification of airborne particles, provided the signal is sufficiently large. We formulate a semiclassical theory of nonlinear scattering to estimate the number of detectable photons from a bacterial spore at a distance. For the first time, the theory incorporates enhanced quantum coherence via femtosecond pulses and a nonlinear process into the classical scattering problem. Our result shows a large backscattered signal in the far field, using typical parameters of an anthrax spore with maximally prepared vibrational coherence. Using train pulses of 1 kHz of repetition …

Educating Teachers For Moral, Civic And Citizenship Education: Challenges Ahead, L.H. Chang
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
Like any other formal subjects such as History or Mathematics, both Moral Education and Civic and Citizenship Education subjects have set or structured curriculum aims, objectives and content. These subjects would thus need teachers who have professional knowledge and expertise to conduct the most appropriate instructions and guidance in learning the subjects This paper will focus on the pre-service programme conducted at University of Malaya and the in-service orientation conducted by the Ministry of Education on educating teachers for teaching Moral Education that would have some implications to educating teachers for teaching Civic and Citizenship Education. However, due to lack …

Locally derived ice is often observed to fill through-cutting rifts and uneven fronts in ice shelves. That ice may nucleate as fast ice at the shelf front, by growth at the sea surface within rifts, or by basal accretion. Here, we investigate the role of such ice in the flow of the Brunt Ice Shelf and adjacent Stancomb-Wills ice tongue, along the Caird Coast of Antarctica. Much of the shelf system is severely rifted, with locally derived ice filling the space between rift walls and around ice rafts. A series of numerical experiments that account for thermal properties of the …

“Judith” Shakespeare In Computer Programming : An Oral History Study Of American Women Programmers In The Late Twentieth Century, Laura L. Zeigen
Dissertations and Theses
The question "Why are there not more women in computer science?" is one that has been asked by both scholarly and business communities since women entered the workforce in large numbers starting in the 1970s. Although there exists a vast literature covering how to involve more girls and women in computer science today, as well as a smaller body of literature outlining the few female pioneers in the field, little has been written about the women who, despite historical exclusion, actually participated in the computing industry as programmers and software engineers beginning in the 1960s. Who were the women going …

D. A. Kolb's Theory Of Experiential Learning - Implications For The Development Of Music Theory Instructional Material, Michael Lively
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
Undergraduate students often find music theory courses to be among the most difficult and sometimes most frustrating experiences of their early college careers. The difficulty may stem from the tendency of music theory instruction to rely heavily upon the learner's ability to process information with abstract modes of cognition. Many students have either limited experience with abstract intellectual tasks or limited aptitude for cognitive abstraction. This essay will explore the process of adapting music theory instructional material for the learning styles of individual students.

When Messages Are The Medium: Researching Best Practices In Online Education, Sharon S. Kleinman
Iowa Journal of Communication
This paper discusses a comparative case study of online media history courses designed from the constructivist perspective (Moon, 1999). Data were collected using online participant observation, the course management systems automated tracking of students' course website usage, and online questionnaires. Data were analyzed/or insights regarding factors affecting student participation, satisfaction, and achievement. Innovative strategies for designing online learning environments that encourage interaction, active learning, and academic integrity were field-tested and critiqued. Among the innovations that shaped "classroom" dialogue and fostered an active learning community were: (1) using and publicizing the course management systems capabilities for tracking students' course website usage, …

EPR spectra were recorded for methionine aminopeptidase from Escherichia coli (EcMetAP-I) samples (~2.5 mM) to which one and two equivalents of Mn(II) were added (the latter is referred to as [MnMn(EcMetAP-I)]). The spectra for each sample were indistinguishable except that the spectrum of [MnMn(EcMetAP-I)] was twice as intense. The EPR spectrum of [MnMn(EcMetAP-I)] exhibited the characteristic six-line g≈2 EPR signal of mononuclear Mn(II) with A av(55Mn)=9.3 mT (93 G) and exhibited Curie-law temperature dependence. This signal is typical of Mn(II) in a ligand sphere comprising oxygen and/or nitrogen …

Multiple Description Distributed Image Coding With Side Information For Mobile Wireless Transmission, Min Wu, Daewon Song, Chang Wen Chen
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Multiple description coding (MDC) is a source coding technique that involves coding the source information into multiple descriptions, and then transmitting them over different channels in packet network or error-prone wireless environment to achieve graceful degradation if parts of descriptions are lost at the receiver. In this paper, we proposed a multiple description distributed wavelet zero tree image coding system for mobile wireless transmission. We provide two innovations to achieve an excellent error resilient capability. First, when MDC is applied to wavelet subband based image coding, it is possible to introduce correlation between the descriptions in each subband. We consider …
