The Convergence Of Difference Boxes, Christopher Kribs, Antonio Behn, Vadim Ponomarenko Jan 2005

The Convergence Of Difference Boxes, Christopher Kribs, Antonio Behn, Vadim Ponomarenko

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

We consider an elementary mathematical puzzle known as a "difference box" in terms of a discrete map from R⁴ to R⁴ or , canonically, from a subset of the first R² into itself. We identify the map's unique canonical fixed point and answer more generally the question of how many interactions a given "difference box" takes to reach zero. (The number is finite except for boxes corresponding to the fixed point.)

A Disturbance Instance For Karst Environments., Philip Van Beynen, Kaya Van Beynen Jan 2005

A Disturbance Instance For Karst Environments., Philip Van Beynen, Kaya Van Beynen

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Karst environments, unique from other environments, require their own disturbance index. Karst resources are increasingly disturbed by a variety of processes related to social, physical, and economic factors. Recent studies have begun to qualify and quantify these disturbances, yet their focus has been limited to one or two factors such as biotic, geomorphic, or economic impacts. A more holistic approach, addressing economic, scientific, and cultural factors, is needed, to effectively assess the threats to karst areas. Currently, there is no efficient method to measure, compare, and contrast the disturbance of karst environments. We propose a hierarchal and standardized environmental disturbance …

Chalkboard Concerto: Growing Up As A Teacher In The Chicago Public Schools, Charles Vanover, Johnny Saldaña Jan 2005

Chalkboard Concerto: Growing Up As A Teacher In The Chicago Public Schools, Charles Vanover, Johnny Saldaña

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Charlkboard Concerto is an ethnodramic performance piece that attempts to share a portion of what I learned as I worked to become a teacher in the Chicago Public Schools in the early 1990’s. Johnny Saldaña and I wrote and produced the ethnodrama to communicate the moments of grace I felt as I learned to teach and to allow audience members to feel the acts of kindness that continually inspired me to do better. Teaching in the Chicago Public Schools was the hardest thing that I ever did in my life and the most rewarding choice I ever made. Johnny and …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Background: Phages, viruses that infect prokaryotes, are the most abundant microbes in the world. A major limitation to studying these viruses is the difficulty of cultivating the appropriate prokaryotic hosts. One way around this limitation is to directly clone and sequence shotgun libraries of uncultured viral communities (i.e., metagenomic analyses). PHACCS http://phage.sdsu.edu/phaccs, Phage Communities from Contig Spectrum, is an online bioinformatic tool to assess the biodiversity of uncultured viral communities. PHACCS uses the contig spectrum from shotgun DNA sequence assemblies to mathematically model the structure of viral communities and make predictions about diversity.

Results: PHACCS builds models of possible …

Measuring Christian Education Against National And State Standards: A Review Of The Literature, Beth Gordy Waddell Jan 2005

Measuring Christian Education Against National And State Standards: A Review Of The Literature, Beth Gordy Waddell

Perspectives In Learning

Almost all states within the United States have adopted state education standards as a tool to measure the knowledge and skills needed and the expected outcomes students should be achieving within a given school year (Juarez, 1999). There are two kinds of standards, content standards and performance standards. Content standards indicate what a student should know and be able to do. Performance standards incorporate content standards, but are expanded to include suggested tasks, sample student work, and teacher commentary on that work (Georgia Department of Education, 2004). According to Robert J. Marzano, a Senior Fellow at the Mid-Continent Research for …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Objectives: Defining the mechanism of infection with human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) or Kaposi’s sarcoma associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is an important clinical issue. HHV-8 has been linked to Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) development in HIV-1-infected individuals, and KS develops in 40% of those infected with both viruses. A series of epidemiological data suggest that sexual transmission is one of the routes of transmission for HHV-8. In our studies, we sought to assess the cellular reservoirs of HHV-8 DNA in the semen of HIV-1-infected men and the potential role of HHV-8 infected spermatozoa in horizontal transmission. Design and methods: A nested polymerase chain reaction …
