Watch What You're Watching Together: The Complicated Relationship Between Family Coviewing And Family Functioning, Kymberly Booth Higgs Jan 2005

Watch What You're Watching Together: The Complicated Relationship Between Family Coviewing And Family Functioning, Kymberly Booth Higgs

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative study examines a potential relationship between viewing television together as a family and family functioning. About 150 families from California, Missouri and Ohio were asked to report the amount of time they spent viewing television together (coviewing) as well as the specific programs they were likely to view as a family. The families also completed the self-report McMaster Family Assessment Device, which measures five dimensions of family functioning (communication, roles, affective involvement, behavior control and overall general functioning). Statistical analysis revealed inverse relationships between the amount of time spent coviewing and family communication, affective involvement (i.e., cohesion) and …

Structural Interpretations From High Resolution Aeromagnetic Data, Northwest Botswana, Daniel Wheaton Jan 2005

Structural Interpretations From High Resolution Aeromagnetic Data, Northwest Botswana, Daniel Wheaton

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

High resolution aeromagnetic data collected over northwest Botswana has provided new insights into previously hidden geologic structures. Major antiformal and synformal structures have been recognized within the Kinabaran age Kgwebe meta-volcanics and other basement rocks. These structural features trend northeast-southwest agreeing with previously collected geologic field data and observed surface features. Further interpretation of the geophysical data has yielded relative dips of the fold limbs and indication of the direction of plunge. Folding extends both north and south of the Okavango Rift Zone for at least 100 - 200 kilometers. Further studies are being conducted to determine if these pre-existing …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Chemical repellents sometimes can provide a nonlethal alternative for reducing wildlife impacts to agricultural production. In late summer and autumn 2002, we evaluated Bird Shield™ (active ingredient: methyl anthranilate, Bird Shield Repellent Corporation, Spokane, Wash.) as a blackbird (Icteridae) repellent in Missouri rice fields and North Dakota sunflower fields. We selected 5 pairs of ripening rice fields in southeastern Missouri and randomly allocated treatments (treated and control) within pairs. The repellent was aerially applied by fixed-winged aircraft at the recommended label rate and volume (1.17 L Bird Shield/ha and 46.7 L/ha, respectively); 1 field received 2X the label rate. We …

Lights, Camera, Inquiry!: Setting The Stage For A Year Of Inquiry, Brandon Schrauth

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This article describes my own inquiry. As I work to prepare and start a new school year. I show how I consider the classroom environment to have a strong connection to the success of inquiry in the science classroom. I describe how I use the process of inquiry as a starting point and how I use specific actions to create an environment that pushes students to move beyond restating known information. Finally, I address the need for a teacher's own change and the importance for our own risk-taking behaviors. This article promotes National Science Education Content Standards A and B, …

Introducing Students To Polar And Non-Polar Interactions Through Inquiry, Jerrid Kruse Jan 2005

Introducing Students To Polar And Non-Polar Interactions Through Inquiry, Jerrid Kruse

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Almost half of all chemistry teachers do not use inquiry in their classroom. Teachers cite classroom management, safety, and workload as reasons for not implementing inquiry techniques in their classroom (Deters, 2004). These teachers may resist laboratory-based inquiry finding it too daunting for themselves and their students. However, both students and teachers can progressively move to laboratory-based inquiry by first starting with less demanding science inquiry. This article describes an inquiry atmosphere created in a discussion classroom setting where students only minimally interact with materials. Students investigate macroscopic properties of water and hexane at their desks and the teacher performs …

The Unionid Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of Missouri River Floodplain Ditches In Fremont County Southwestern Iowa And Atchison And Holt Counties Northwestern Missouri, Ellet Hoke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A survey of ditches in the Missouri River floodplain in southwestern Iowa and northwestern Missouri resulted in the recovery of nine unionid mollusk species. The floodplain ditches may provide valuable habitat for mussels in a region that has suffered a tremendous decrease in productive aquatic habitats over the past sixty-eight years. Additional survey activity is needed to determine the complete inventory of unionid mollusks in the area.

Linear Electronic And Optical Processes In Fullerene Thin Films, Jonathan Moghal, Naomi Brant, Siobhan Phelan, Hugh Byrne, Gordon Chambers

Conference papers

The electrical properties of C60 have been extensively studied in both the solid and solution phases. The vibrational spectroscopy of C60 is predominantly molecular in character. However electronic spectroscopy reveals features, which are specific to the solid. These features have been attributed to intermolecular charge transfer states. The relative importance of these inter – and intramolecular processes in terms of their contribution to the electronic transport is discussed. Cyclic voltammetry is employed to generate charged molecular species, which also contribute to the conduction process and comparisons to optical excited states species are drawn. The cyclic voltammetry was monitored in situ …

A Solvent-Free Baeyer–Villiger Lactonization For The Undergraduate Organic Laboratory: Synthesis Of Γ-T-Butyl-Ε-Caprolactone, John J. Esteb, James N. Hohman, Diana E. Schladaminger, Anne M. Wilson Jan 2005

A Solvent-Free Baeyer–Villiger Lactonization For The Undergraduate Organic Laboratory: Synthesis Of Γ-T-Butyl-Ε-Caprolactone, John J. Esteb, James N. Hohman, Diana E. Schladaminger, Anne M. Wilson

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

We present an experiment involving the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation reactionfor a first-year organic chemistry class. The Baeyer–Villiger reactionprovides an efficient method to convert ketones to esters or lactones. Most organictextbooks cover the Baeyer–Villiger reaction but owing to a lack of suitableexperiments, students seldom get to explore the reaction in the undergraduateteaching laboratory. In this experiment, m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid(m-CPBA) and4-tert-butylcyclohexanone are mixed together for 30 minutes under solvent-freeconditions to produce γ-t-butyl-ε-caprolactone in 95%yield. The solvent-free nature of this procedure greatly limits the quantityof waste generated by students and keeps costs low by removing the need for solvent.

Interstellar Helium Pickup Ion Flux Variations Observed With Soho/Celias, Lukas A. Saul Jan 2005

Interstellar Helium Pickup Ion Flux Variations Observed With Soho/Celias, Lukas A. Saul

Doctoral Dissertations

Interstellar pickup ions are formed when neutral atoms freely enter the heliosphere and are subsequently ionized. Once these particles are charged they become a component of the interplanetary plasma and are transported outward with the solar wind (SW). Measurements of these particles give information about the local interstellar gas in which our sun resides. However, fluxes of pickup ions in the solar wind are observed to vary substantially in both magnitude and energy spectrum.

Hypothesized is that the main causes of these variations are transport phenomenon in the solar wind, determined by the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field. …

Burnside Factors, Amenability Defects And Transitive Families Of Projections In Factors Of Type Ii(1), Jon P. Bannon Jan 2005

Burnside Factors, Amenability Defects And Transitive Families Of Projections In Factors Of Type Ii(1), Jon P. Bannon

Doctoral Dissertations

We introduce a notion of transitive family of projections in a type II1 factor and prove that there exists (i) a 5 element transitive family in the hyperfinite II1 and (ii) a 12 element free transitive family. We then prove that the group von Neumann algebras of the known infinite free Burnside groups are all type II1 factors. Our investigation of weak-amenability properties of Burnside groups leads us to consider the Connes theory of correspondences. From this investigation we are able to define a new Folner invariant for type II1 factors. We prove a monotonicity result and find a positive …

Chemical Sensors Based On Swelling Polymer Microspheres And Uncrosslinked Fluorescently-Labelled Molecularly Imprinted Polymers, George K. Mwangi Jan 2005

Chemical Sensors Based On Swelling Polymer Microspheres And Uncrosslinked Fluorescently-Labelled Molecularly Imprinted Polymers, George K. Mwangi

Doctoral Dissertations

Polymer swelling can be achieved by derivatizing a functional group onto the polymer that selectively binds a particular analyte. For example, at low pH, the particles in a hydrogel membrane swell in response to the increased hydrogen ion concentration and the membrane reflects less light. When the refractive index of the membrane is less than that of the particles, swelling decreases the refractive index of the particles. This brings it closer to the refractive index of the membrane, and decreases the scattering of light making the membrane more transparent.

On the other hand if the refractive index of the membrane …

The Nature Of Dissection: Exploring Student Conceptions, Katharine York Jan 2005

The Nature Of Dissection: Exploring Student Conceptions, Katharine York

Doctoral Dissertations

The model of conceptual change in science describes the process of learning as a complete restructuring of knowledge, when learners discover or are shown more plausible, intelligent alternatives to existing conceptions. Emotions have been acknowledged as part of a learner's conceptual ecology, but the effects of emotions on learning have yet to be described. This research was conducted to examine the role that emotions have on learning for thirteen high school students, as they dissected cats in a Human Anatomy and Physiology class. The project also investigated whether a student's emotional reactions may be used to develop a sense of …
