Cu2O(1 1 0) Formation On Co3O4(1 1 0) Induced By Copper Impurity Segregation, S. C. Petitto, Marjorie Langell

Marjorie A. Langell Publications

The surface crystal structure of the Co3O4(1 1 0) spinel was characterized by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Well-defined LEED diffraction patterns showed an unreconstructed Co3O4(1 1 0) surface in Type A termination, and XPS and Auger indicated the surface to be stoichiometric with octahedral and tetrahedral cation sites occupied by 3+ and 2+ cations, respectively. The experimental lattice parameters of 8.22 Å ± 0.2 Å and 5.50 Å ± 0.2 Å in the (0 0 1) and (1¯ 1 0) directions, respectively, …

Let lamda be an associative ring with identity and with the Jacobson radical r, let mod lamda be the category of finitely generated left lamda-modules, and let lamdaop be the opposite ring of lamda. All modules are left unital modules, and if X is a module then pd X is the projective dimension of X. If lamda is left artinian and M in mod labmda, we denote by P(M) a projective cover of M.

Effect Of Genotyping Error In Model-Free Linkage Analysis Using Microsatellite Or Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism Marker Maps, Cheryl L. Thompson, Dan Baechle, Qing Lu, George Mathew, Yeunjoo Song, Sudha K. Iyengar, Courtney Gray-Mcguire, Katrina A.B. Goddard Dec 2005

Effect Of Genotyping Error In Model-Free Linkage Analysis Using Microsatellite Or Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism Marker Maps, Cheryl L. Thompson, Dan Baechle, Qing Lu, George Mathew, Yeunjoo Song, Sudha K. Iyengar, Courtney Gray-Mcguire, Katrina A.B. Goddard

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Errors while genotyping are inevitable and can reduce the power to detect linkage. However, does genotyping error have the same impact on linkage results for single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and microsatellite (MS) marker maps? To evaluate this question we detected genotyping errors that are consistent with Mendelian inheritance using large changes in multipoint identity-by-descent sharing in neighboring markers. Only a small fraction of Mendelian consistent errors were detectable (e.g., 18% of MS and 2.4% of SNP genotyping errors). More SNP genotyping errors are Mendelian consistent compared to MS genotyping errors, so genotyping error may have a greater impact on linkage results …

Rediscovering The Economics Of Loss Causation , Richard Kaplan, Madge Thorsen, Scott Hakala

ExpressO

Abstract This article explores the economic principles and theories underlying loss causation in the context of securities fraud litigation. It explains the difference between “investment loss” and recoverable “inflationary loss” and posits that the latter consists of the difference between inflation in stock prices caused by the fraud at the time of purchase and inflation in the price at the time of sale. It reviews scenarios in which inflationary loss due to fraud may occur and would be recognized as a matter of economic theory as well as a matter of law. It urges that Dura v. Broudo Pharmaceuticals, 125 …

Nonparametric Control Chart For The Range, Arnold J. Stromberg

Statistics Faculty Patents

A method is provided for detecting or predicting an undesired deviation in variability of at least one parameter being monitored, wherein the variation in the parameter is incrementally recorded. The method comprises establishing the number of subsets of a dataset that have a range of the difference between any two datapoints within the dataset, and computing a control chart for the range based thereon. The method accurately detects changes in variability in real time. The true distribution of the data is reflected, and the desired result is achieved without requiring an inordinate number of computations.

High-Temperature Calcium Vapor Cell For Spectroscopy On The 4s2 1s0-4s4p 3p1 Intercombination Line, Christopher J. Erickson, Brian Neyenhuis, Dallin S. Durfee Dec 2005

High-Temperature Calcium Vapor Cell For Spectroscopy On The 4s2 1s0-4s4p 3p1 Intercombination Line, Christopher J. Erickson, Brian Neyenhuis, Dallin S. Durfee

Faculty Publications

We have demonstrated a high-temperature vapor cell for absorption spectroscopy on the Ca intercombination line. The cell uses a dual-chamber design to achieve the high temperatures necessary for an optically dense vapor while avoiding the necessity of high-temperature vacuum valves and glass-to-metal seals. We have observed over 50% absorption in a single pass through the cell. Although pressure broadening in the cell prevented us from performing saturated-absorption spectroscopy, the broadening resulted in higher signal-to-noise ratios by allowing us to probe the atoms with intensities much greater than the 0.2µW/cm2 saturation intensity of the unbroadened transition. The techniques presented in this …

Distribution Of Foraging Shearwaters Relative To Inner Front Of Se Bering Sea, J. Jahncke, K. O. Coyle, Stephan I. Zeeman, N. B. Kachel, G. L. Hunt Jr.

Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

We examined the hypothesis that short-tailed shearwaters Puffinus tenuirostris aggregate to forage at the inner front of the SE Bering Sea because of enhanced production there. We tested this hypothesis by comparing primary production, the distribution of euphausiids and the distribution of shearwaters relative to the front during late spring and late summer/early fall of 1997, 1998 and 1999. We found enhanced primary production at the front and offshore of the front during summer but not during spring. Primary production varied between seasons and years. Major differences were related to anomalous conditions in 1997 and 1998. The density of euphausiids …

Alleviating Linear Ecological Bias And Optimal Design With Subsample Data, Adam Glynn, Jon Wakefield, Mark Handcock, Thomas Richardson Dec 2005

Alleviating Linear Ecological Bias And Optimal Design With Subsample Data, Adam Glynn, Jon Wakefield, Mark Handcock, Thomas Richardson

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In this paper, we illustrate that combining ecological data with subsample data in situations in which a linear model is appropriate provides three main benefits. First, by including the individual level subsample data, the biases associated with linear ecological inference can be eliminated. Second, by supplementing the subsample data with ecological data, the information about parameters will be increased. Third, we can use readily available ecological data to design optimal subsampling schemes, so as to further increase the information about parameters. We present an application of this methodology to the classic problem of estimating the effect of a college degree …

Bayesian Analysis Of Cell-Cycle Gene Expression Data, Chuan Zhou, Jon Wakefield, Linda Breeden Dec 2005

Bayesian Analysis Of Cell-Cycle Gene Expression Data, Chuan Zhou, Jon Wakefield, Linda Breeden

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The study of the cell-cycle is important in order to aid in our understanding of the basic mechanisms of life, yet progress has been slow due to the complexity of the process and our lack of ability to study it at high resolution. Recent advances in microarray technology have enabled scientists to study the gene expression at the genome-scale with a manageable cost, and there has been an increasing effort to identify cell-cycle regulated genes. In this chapter, we discuss the analysis of cell-cycle gene expression data, focusing on a model-based Bayesian approaches. The majority of the models we describe …

Probing Attractive Forces At The Nanoscale Using Higher-Harmonic Dynamic Force Microscopy, S. Crittenden, Arvind Raman, R. Reifenberger Dec 2005

Probing Attractive Forces At The Nanoscale Using Higher-Harmonic Dynamic Force Microscopy, S. Crittenden, Arvind Raman, R. Reifenberger

Birck and NCN Publications

We systematically investigate higher harmonics in the vibration spectrum of scanning force microscope cantilevers operating in the attractive regime. We show that a the magnitudes of the higher-harmonic signals in the vibration spectrum should be directly correlated to the local van der Waals forces for systems without significant electrostatic interactions and b the higher-harmonic resonances are much sharper than the fundamental harmonic. Consequently, and unlike the case of the tapping mode operation, contrast in the amplitudes of the higher harmonics over a scanned sample with small electrostatic forces reflects changes in specific chemical composition. Dynamic force-distance curves and higher-harmonic images …

Learning Successful Strategies In Repeated General-Sum Games, Jacob W. Crandall Dec 2005

Learning Successful Strategies In Repeated General-Sum Games, Jacob W. Crandall

Theses and Dissertations

Many environments in which an agent can use reinforcement learning techniques to learn profitable strategies are affected by other learning agents. These situations can be modeled as general-sum games. When playing repeated general-sum games with other learning agents, the goal of a self-interested learning agent is to maximize its own payoffs over time. Traditional reinforcement learning algorithms learn myopic strategies in these games. As a result, they learn strategies that produce undesirable results in many games. In this dissertation, we develop and analyze algorithms that learn non-myopic strategies when playing many important infinitely repeated general-sum games. We show that, in …

Adaptive Weighing Of Context Models For Lossless Data Compression, Matthew V. Mahoney Dec 2005

Adaptive Weighing Of Context Models For Lossless Data Compression, Matthew V. Mahoney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Until recently the state of the art in lossless data compression was prediction by partial match (PPM). A PPM model estimates the next-symbol probability distribution by combining statistics from the longest matching contiguous contexts in which each symbol value is found. We introduce a context mixing model which improves on PPM by allowing contexts which are arbitrary functions of the history. Each model independently estimates a probability and confidence that the next bit of data will be 0 or 1. Predictions are combined by weighted averaging. After a bit is arithmetic coded, the weights are adjusted along the cost gradient …

A Hybrid Model For Reducing Ecological Bias, Ruth Salway, Jon Wakefield Dec 2005

A Hybrid Model For Reducing Ecological Bias, Ruth Salway, Jon Wakefield

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

A major drawback of epidemiological ecological studies, in which the association between area-level summaries of risk and exposure are used to make inference about individual risk, is the difficulty in characterising within-area variability in exposure and confounder variables. To avoid ecological bias, samples of individual exposure/confounder data within each area are required. Unfortunately these may be difficult or expensive to obtain, particularly if large samples are required. In this paper we propose a new approach suitable for use with small samples. We combine a Bayesian non-parametric Dirichlet process prior with an estimating functions approach, and show that this model gives …

Coordinate Systems And Bounded Isomorphisms, David R. Pitts, David R. Pitts Dec 2005

Coordinate Systems And Bounded Isomorphisms, David R. Pitts, David R. Pitts

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

For a Banach D-bimoduleMover an abelian unital C*-algebraD, we define E1(M) as the collection of norm-one eigenvectors for the dual action of D on the Banach space dual M#. Equip E1(M) with the weak*-topology. We develop general properties of E1(M). It is properly viewed as a coordinate system for M when M C, where C is a unital C*-algebra containing D as a regular MASA with the extension property; moreover, E1(C) coincides with Kumjian’s twist in the context of C*-diagonals. We identify the C*-envelope of a subalgebra A of a C*-diagonal when D A C. For triangular subalgebras, each containing …

We present new observations of the white dwarf G29-38 with the camera (4.5 and 8 μm), photometer (24 μm), and spectrograph (5.5-14 μm) of the Spitzer Space Telescope. This star has an exceptionally large infrared excess, amounting to 3% of the bolometric luminosity. The spectral energy distribution (SED) has a continuum peak around 4.5 μm and a 9-11 μm emission feature 1.25 times brighter than the continuum. A mixture of amorphous olivine and a small amount of forsterite in an emitting region 1-5 R☉ from the star can reproduce the shape of the 9-11 μm feature. The SED …

The Paley-Wiener Theorem And The Local Huygens' Principle For Compact Symmetric Spaces: The Even Multiplicity Case, Thomas Branson, Gestur Ólafsson, Angela Pasquale Dec 2005

The Paley-Wiener Theorem And The Local Huygens' Principle For Compact Symmetric Spaces: The Even Multiplicity Case, Thomas Branson, Gestur Ólafsson, Angela Pasquale

Faculty Publications

We prove a Paley-Wiener theorem for a class of symmetric spaces of the compact type, in which all root multiplicities are even. This theorem characterizes functions of small support in terms of holomorphic extendability and exponential type of their (discrete) Fourier transforms. We also provide three independent new proofs of the strong Huygens' principle for a suitable constant shift of the wave equation on odd-dimensional spaces from our class. © 2005 Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The Paley-Wiener Theorem For The Jacobi Transform And The Local Huygens' Principle For Root Systems With Even Multiplicities, Thomas Branson, Gestur Ólafsson, Angela Pasquale

Faculty Publications

This note is a continuation of the previous paper by same authors [this issue]. Its purpose is to extend the results to the context of root systems with even multiplicities. Under the even multiplicity assumption, we prove a local Paley-Wiener theorem for the Jacobi transform and the strong Huygens' principle for the wave equation associated with the modified compact Laplace operator. © 2005 Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
