Academic Rigor: A Critical Analysis, Dennis Clayson Sep 2005

Academic Rigor: A Critical Analysis, Dennis Clayson

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

There is a segment in the movie "Bedazzled" which appears pertinent to the present discussion. The scene is inside a classroom. A table is covered with a stack of red apples, indicating the popularity of the teacher and perhaps symbolizing forbidden fruit. Actress Elizabeth Hurley, wearing a short skirt and tight sweater, is teaching in front of a classroom full of young men. She walks to a blackboard where tomorrow's homework assignments are written. "OK boys, tonight's homework. Algebra: XN + YN = ZN, but you are never going to use that, are you?" She erases …

Reforming Welfare Reform Postsecondary Education Policy: Two State Case Studies In Political Culture, Organizing, And Advocacy, Charles Price

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Welfare reform had the unforeseen effect of causing large numbers of public assistance recipients to drop out of college, discouraging their pursuit and acquisition of postsecondary education (PSE) credentials. There is a growing body of research that shows the value of postsecondary education in getting public assistance recipients onto a path toward occupational and social mobility. The restrictions of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families PSE policy, coupled with the recognition that college participation should be an option for qualified welfare recipients, influenced the emergence of many successful state and county-level movements focused on reforming welfare reform PSE policy. Their work …

Seafloor Characterization Through The Application Of Avo Analysis To Multibeam Sonar Data, Luciano E. Fonseca, Larry A. Mayer, Barbara J. Kraft Sep 2005

Seafloor Characterization Through The Application Of Avo Analysis To Multibeam Sonar Data, Luciano E. Fonseca, Larry A. Mayer, Barbara J. Kraft

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

In the seismic reflection method, it is well known that seismic amplitude varies with the offset between the seismic source and detector and that this variation is a key to the direct determination of lithology and pore fluid content of subsurface strata. Based on this fundamental property, amplitude-versus-offset (AVO) analysis has been used successfully in the oil industry for the exploration and characterization of subsurface reservoirs. Multibeam sonars acquire acoustic backscatter over a wide range of incidence angles and the variation of the backscatter with the angle of incidence is an intrinsic property of the seafloor. Building on this analogy, …

Uvsd: Software For Detection Of Color Underwater Features, Yuri Rzhanov, Anton Mamaenko, M Yoklavich

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Underwater Video Spot Detector (UVSD) is a software package designed to analyze underwater video for continuous spatial measurements (path traveled, distance to the bottom, roughness of the surface etc.) Laser beams of known geometry are often used in underwater imagery to estimate the distance to the bottom. This estimation is based on the manual detection of laser spots which is labor intensive and time consuming so usually only a few frames can be processed this way. This allows for spatial measurements on single frames (distance to the bottom, size of objects on the sea-bottom), but not for the whole video …

Algebraic Insight Underpins The Use Of Cas For Modelling, Robyn Pierce Sep 2005

Algebraic Insight Underpins The Use Of Cas For Modelling, Robyn Pierce

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) performs algorithmic processes quickly and correctly. Concern is commonly expressed that students using CAS will merely be pushing buttons but this paper indicates that, while CAS may assist students, this facility impacts on only one section of the mathematical modeling process: CAS may be used to help find mathematical solutions to mathematically formulated problems. Controlling and monitoring the use of CAS to perform the necessary routine processes requires the mathematical thinking referred to as algebraic insight. This paper sets out a framework of the aspects, and elements of algebraic insight and illustrates the importance of students …

Von Neumann And Computers, Steve Humble Sep 2005

Von Neumann And Computers, Steve Humble

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The title of this paper should not be Von Neumann and computers, but Von Neumann and the Von Neumann machine. Von Neumann may be famous for many things but humility was not one of them. Yet no one had anything bad to say about 'good time' Johnny Von Neumann; he just was too likeable. He gave massive parties and loved women, fast cars, jokes, noise, Mexican food, fine wine, and, most of all, mathematics. 'Unbelievable', said one of Von Neumann's old friends, 'He knew how to have a good time. His parties were once if not twice a week at …

Problem Solving And Problem Posing In A Dynamic Geometry Environment, Constantinos Christou, Nicholas Mousoulides, Marios Pittalis, Demetra Pitta-Pantazi Sep 2005

Problem Solving And Problem Posing In A Dynamic Geometry Environment, Constantinos Christou, Nicholas Mousoulides, Marios Pittalis, Demetra Pitta-Pantazi

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this study, we considered dynamic geometry software (DGS) as the tool that mediates students’ strategies in solving and posing problems. The purpose of the present study was twofold. First, to understand the way in which students can solve problems in the setting of a dynamic geometry environment, and second, to investigate how DGS provides opportunities for posing new problems. Two mathematical problems were presented to six pre-service teachers with prior experience in dynamic geometry. Each student participated in two interview sessions which were video recorded. The results of the study showed that DGS, as a mediation tool, encouraged students …

Instrumented Techniques And Reflective Thinking In Analytic Geometry, Nurit Zehavi, Giora Mann Sep 2005

Instrumented Techniques And Reflective Thinking In Analytic Geometry, Nurit Zehavi, Giora Mann

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In a previous study that explored epistemological perspectives on solving problems with Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) we concluded that awareness of the special ways that the software utilizes symbols in algebraic manipulations and in implicit plotting should be encouraged (Zehavi, 2004). Such awareness is required for, and encouraged by treating geometry analytically with a symbolic-graphical system. In this paper we compare a traditional solution of a problem in analytic geometry with CAS-based solutions to the same problem. The discussion will focus on the role of reflective thinking, namely selection of techniques, monitoring of the solution process, insight, and conceptualization, play …

Active-Passive Array Surface Wave Inversion And Comparison To Borehole Logs In Southeast Missouri, Alexei A. Malovichko, Neil Lennart Anderson, Dmitriy A. Malovichko, Denis Yu Shylakov, Pavel G. Butirin

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In May 2002, both active- and passive-source surface wave data were acquired using 4-channel arrays at six selected bridge sites in southeast Missouri. Processing of acquired data (increase of signal-to-noise ratio, estimation of phase velocities) was carried out and dispersion curves of Rayleigh wave phase velocities were constructed. Each fundamental mode dispersion curve was then inverted by linearised optimization to a layered shear-wave velocity profile to depths of up to 60 m. The estimated shear-wave velocity profiles were compared to other geotechnical data that had been previously acquired at each test site for the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) including …

Interaction Of Carbon Nanotubes With Sugar Complexes, Alan Casey, Gordon Farrell, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne, Gordon Chambers Sep 2005

Interaction Of Carbon Nanotubes With Sugar Complexes, Alan Casey, Gordon Farrell, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne, Gordon Chambers

Articles

The interaction of carbon nanotubes with soft organic molecules such as cyclodextrins and other saccarides has recently been shown to produce water soluble composites. Such systems offer considerable advantages over polymer based composites due to their biocompatibility and noncovalent coupling which can potentially preserve the unique properties of the tubes. The mechanism of interaction for such systems has been proposed to be dominated by hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions along the surface of the tube. However efforts to characterise and rationalise such noncovalent interactions between the sugar-based materials and the carbon nanotubes have been slow to emerge. In this study a …

Remedying Unequal Access: The Role Of Outreach In Shaping College Opportunities For Underserved Students, Eddie Comeaux Sep 2005

Remedying Unequal Access: The Role Of Outreach In Shaping College Opportunities For Underserved Students, Eddie Comeaux

Essays in Education

The discourse regarding affirmative action in California, stemming in recent years from the passing of SB 1 in 1995 and Proposition 209 in 1996, has major implications for African Americans’ struggle for higher education in California. This legislation signals a need to understand where African Americans are now and how to identify strategies and practices that are efficacious in improving access as well as preparing these students for competitive college eligibility. In an attempt to illuminate the current status of African American students in California, this article analyzes patterns and trends of academic preparation at the secondary level and undergraduate …

In Response To Nclb: A Case For Retaining The Social Studies, Thomas Misco Sep 2005

In Response To Nclb: A Case For Retaining The Social Studies, Thomas Misco

Essays in Education

The proliferation of state standards, high-stakes accountability, and mandates stemming from the No Child Left Behind Act have worked to sever social studies from the common experience in many schools and has prompted a myopic interest in low-level declarative knowledge. This paper examines the consequences of NCLB for social studies education and provides a defense through the lenses of the learner, the subject matter, and the values of society, as well as a rationale for entrenching and strengthening the social studies given this formidable challenge.

Nontraditional Alternative Teacher Certification Programs: Their Purpose, Design And Participants, Phyllis K. Adcock, Marc Mahlios Sep 2005

Nontraditional Alternative Teacher Certification Programs: Their Purpose, Design And Participants, Phyllis K. Adcock, Marc Mahlios

Essays in Education

When the subject of nontraditional alternative teacher certification programs is discussed among teacher educators, there seems to be a wariness due to the way in which nontraditional alternative teacher certification has been managed in the past. However, current research seems to bear out that quality nontraditional alternative certification programs are not only helping with teacher shortages, but are producing quality teachers who know how students learn and are effective in their roles as teachers (Ducharme & Ducharme, 1998).

Setting Realistically High Academic Standards And Expectations, Mehmet A. Ozturk, Charles Debelak Sep 2005

Setting Realistically High Academic Standards And Expectations, Mehmet A. Ozturk, Charles Debelak

Essays in Education

The present article is an overview of current academic expectations in the U.S. education system. It starts with a brief introduction highlighting the importance of expectations in education. Then, the current, undesirable situation of the U.S. education system is illustrated through international comparisons of student achievement and academic expectations followed by a discussion of how well schools in the U.S. prepare students for the future in the face of a highly competitive global workforce. The paper proceeds with its central argument, presenting evidence from all levels of the education ladder, that low expectations play a crucial role in the overall …

Supervising A Struggling Student Teacher: A Midterm Action Plan, Paul J. Riccomini, Robin E. Fish Sep 2005

Supervising A Struggling Student Teacher: A Midterm Action Plan, Paul J. Riccomini, Robin E. Fish

Essays in Education

A large shortage of qualified special education teachers is one of the most serious and pervasive problems facing students disabilities. With both the quality and the quantity of special educators requiring improvement, teacher educators are becoming more aware of the necessity to train better-prepared special education teachers. In response to the problems, the Clemson University undergraduate program in Special Education has developed rigorous curricula and performance standards to prepare highly trained special educators. In addition to the standard program requirements, a systematic plan was developed to facilitate the improvement of struggling student teachers who are not meeting expected performance competencies. …

Site-Based Management: A Review Of The Literature Part I: Setting The Stage, Terry-Ann Rodriguez, John R. Slate Sep 2005

Site-Based Management: A Review Of The Literature Part I: Setting The Stage, Terry-Ann Rodriguez, John R. Slate

Essays in Education

Americans have been rethinking and redesigning the way in which public schools should be most effectively operated through the process known as restructuring or systematic reform (Fiske, 1995). One of the most frequently used approaches to school reform is site-based management (SBM) (Mohrman, 1994). The major objective behind the site-based management approach is to move decision-making control from the central office of a school system to the local school level (i.e., at each school campus) (Short & Greer, 1997). Critical to the implementation of site-based management is the participation of school stakeholders (i.e., teachers, parents, administrators, staff, and community and …

Redesigning A Master’S For Teachers Program, Cathy Stockton Sep 2005

Redesigning A Master’S For Teachers Program, Cathy Stockton

Essays in Education

This paper describes the process that one college of education used to redesign the master’s for teachers program. Post-baccalaureate programs were redesigned to incorporate requirements of No Child Left Behind, school improvement, empirical based researched practices, and student achievement. All redesigned courses reflect an increased emphasis on field experiences.

In February 2003, all private and public universities in the state of Louisiana received a mandate to redesign all master’s for teachers programs. The redesign committees were to include P-12 administrators, teachers, community representatives, current teacher professionals and representatives from other colleges in the process. The redesigned post-baccalaureate education program had …

Signature Of Chaos In High-Lying Doubly Excited States Of The Helium Atom, Anh-Thu Le, Toru Morishita, X.-M. Tong, C. D. Lin Sep 2005

Signature Of Chaos In High-Lying Doubly Excited States Of The Helium Atom, Anh-Thu Le, Toru Morishita, X.-M. Tong, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We examined nearest-neighbor spacing (NNS) statistics in doubly excited states of helium near the double ionization threshold. Using the Brody parameter q to measure the NNS distribution between the regular Poisson distribution (q=0) and the chaotic Wigner distribution (q=1), we showed that for levels near the N=20 threshold of He⁺, or at about 0.13eV below the double ionization threshold, the NNS distribution has q=0.66. The result shows the slow approach of the NNS of helium energy levels towards the Wigner distribution vs the excitation energy. Using an s-wave model where the angular momentum of each electron is restricted to zero, …

Channel Electron Multiplier And Channelplate Efficiencies For Detecting Positive Ions, M. Krems, J. Zirbel, Mark Allan Thomason, Robert D. Dubois Sep 2005

Channel Electron Multiplier And Channelplate Efficiencies For Detecting Positive Ions, M. Krems, J. Zirbel, Mark Allan Thomason, Robert D. Dubois

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Absolute detection efficiencies for singly and multiply charged positive ions have been measured for a channelplate and for two different channel electron multipliers (CEM). The efficiencies were measured for impact energies between approximately 0.25 and 25 keV and for ion masses ranging from 14 to 132. The maximum efficiencies were found to be the same for all ions investigated and were approximately 58% for a channelplate and 89% for the CEMs. For a channelplate it is shown that the detection efficiencies for heavier ions scale to a single curve if plotted versus the impact energy divided by the square root …

Exchange Distortion And Postcollision Interaction For Intermediate-Energy Electron-Impact Ionization Of Argon, A. Prideaux, Don H. Madison, K. Bartschat Sep 2005

Exchange Distortion And Postcollision Interaction For Intermediate-Energy Electron-Impact Ionization Of Argon, A. Prideaux, Don H. Madison, K. Bartschat

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measurements of fully differential cross sections for electron impact ionization of atoms have been performed for over 30 years. However, only within the last ten years has agreement between experiment and theory been achieved for ionization of hydrogen and helium. For the heavier inert gases, reasonably good agreement between experiment and theory has only been achieved for high incident energies while serious discrepancies are common for intermediate and low incident energies. It is believed that a major source of the problem stems from an improper/inadequate treatment of exchange distortion (ED) and the effects of post-collision interactions (PCIs). In this paper, …

Charge-Exchange-Produced K -Shell X-Ray Emission From Ar¹⁶⁺ In A Tokamak Plasma With Neutral-Beam Injection, P. Beiersdorfer, M. Bitter, M. Marion, Ronald E. Olson Sep 2005

Charge-Exchange-Produced K -Shell X-Ray Emission From Ar¹⁶⁺ In A Tokamak Plasma With Neutral-Beam Injection, P. Beiersdorfer, M. Bitter, M. Marion, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

High-resolution spectroscopy of a hot tokamak plasma seeded with argon ions and interacting with an energetic, short-pulse neutral hydrogen beam was used to obtain a high-resolution K -shell x-ray spectrum formed solely by charge exchange. The observed K -shell emission of Ar16+ is dominated by the intercombination and forbidden lines, providing clear signatures of charge exchange. Results from an ab initio atomic cascade model provide excellent agreement, validating a semiclassical approach for calculating charge-exchange cross sections.
