Effect Of Thermal Transport On Spatiotemporal Emergence Of Lamellar Branching Morphology During Polymer Spherulitic Growth, Haijun Xu, Wirunya Keawwattana, Thein Kyu

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Spatiotemporal emergence of lamellar branching morphology of polymer spherulite has been investigated theoretically in the framework of a phase field model by coupling a crystal solidification potential pertaining to a nonconserved crystal order parameter with a temperature field generated by latent heat of crystallization. A local free-energy density having an asymmetric double well has been utilized to account for a first-order phase transition such as crystallization. To account for the polymorphous nature of polymer crystallization, the phase field order parameter of crystal at the solidification potential of the double-well local free-energy density is modified to be supercooling dependent. The heat …

Deaf Students And Problem Solving In Mathematics, Heather Maltzan Sep 2005

Deaf Students And Problem Solving In Mathematics, Heather Maltzan

Theses

Currently, there exists a gap between findings in the research in mathematics education of deaf students and subsequent changes in educational settings for deaf students. Problem solving skills has become an area of particular concern. Deaf students' performance on problem solving tasks and word problems falls below that of their hearing counterparts. The research into the causes is organized into four broad categories: language and communication, semantic and conceptual understanding or cognition, the effects of educational environment or experience, and testing of proposed strategies. The implications of these research including reading, vocabulary, conceptual understanding, teacher preparation, incorporation of the Standards, …

History Of Idea And The Impact On Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Adam Garfinkel Sep 2005

History Of Idea And The Impact On Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Adam Garfinkel

Theses

My master's project focuses on the main federal special education law- the Reauthorization of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments (IDEA- 1997)- that was due to be reauthorized in the year 2002. The reauthorization bill was left unapproved because the United States Congress has had more urgent legislation involving war with Iraq, the national security of our nation and its citizens and the global war on terrorism, Medicare, the high rate of unemployment and a huge growing deficit. It is timely to investigate the current law because the educational issues of children with disabilities have not been met yet. It …

Compact Families Of Sets, Iwo Labuda Sep 2005

Compact Families Of Sets, Iwo Labuda

Analysis Seminar

A topological space is said to be compact if every filter base on has a cluster point (Vietoris, 1920) or, equivalently, every open cover of has a finite subcover (Alexandrov and Urysohn, 1922). Many other notions of compactness arise in topology and analysis, including countably compact, sequentially compact, paracompact, metacompact, Eberlein compact, angelic, pseudocompact, and feebly compact spaces. If ⊆ , then is a compact (in any sense) subset of whenever as a subspace of is compact. Let now be a family of subsets of . What does it mean for …

In the one-dimensional title polymer, [Cu(C8H4F3O2S)2(C12H10N4)]n or [Cu(L)2(tta)2] [tta is -thenoyltrifluoroacetonato and L is 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene], Cu2+ lies on a center of inversion. It is axially coordinated by two pyridyl N atoms from two different L ligands and equatorially coordinated by four O atoms from two chelating tta ligands. The ligand L propagates the one-dimensional chain structure by serving as a bridging ligand between two Cu octahedra via Cu-N coordinate bonds.

Towards The Rational Design Of Mri Contrast Agents: A Practical Approach To The Synthesis Of Gadolinium Complexes That Exhibit Optimal Water Exchange, Mark Woods, Mauro Botta, Stefano Avedano, Jing Wang, A. Dean Sherry

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The gadolinium(III) complex of S-SSSS-NO2BnDOTMA exhibits water exchange kinetics that are optimal for use in high relaxivity or targeted contrast agents. However, the synthesis of this ligand is hampered by the steric encumbrance imparted upon the cyclen ring by the nitrobenzyl substituent. A relatively simple modification has been used to enable the synthesis of larger quantities of a bifunctional ligand that retains similar fast water exchange properties. The gadolinium complex of S-SSS-NO2BnDO3MA-1A is shown to retain the rapid water exchange kinetics characteristic of a twisted square antiprismatic (TSAP) …

Enhanced Anomalous Scattering By Superconducting Nanofilms Vs T At O:K, Cu:L2,3 , Ba:M4,5 Edges, Juana Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Enhanced (001) anomalous scattering by YBa2Cu3O7-δ 50 nm films on SrTiO3 substrates with and without a grain boundary versus temperature is interpreted using crystallographic weights to distinguish it from total electron yield and fluorescence spectra. The power of diffraction enhancement is to ascertain the film oxygen composition from the changes in the c-axis, c0 as the film surface is scanned across the grain boundary, and to determine that c0 is constantversus temperature across the superconducting phase transition.

Proposal: An Enhanced Reading Program For Young Deaf/Hh Students, Amanda Beauchamp Sep 2005

Proposal: An Enhanced Reading Program For Young Deaf/Hh Students, Amanda Beauchamp

Theses

Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing face a tough challenge when it comes to the development of reading skills in young deaf children. Every classroom with deaf students has the potential to include a diversity of students with various linguistic backgrounds/abilities. Every deaf child's individual exposure to language has a direct effect on his/her literacy development. It then becomes the teacher's responsibility to assess each student's experience with language and linguistic ability and create a reading program suitable to the needs of the students in her classroom. After much research and some experience in the field, it is …

A Study Of Perceptions Of Mathematics Signs: Implications For Teaching, Paul Glaser Sep 2005

A Study Of Perceptions Of Mathematics Signs: Implications For Teaching, Paul Glaser

Theses

There is increasing importance being placed on the role mathematics signs play in teaching and learning in the classroom. Potential ramifications of invented signs on teaching and learning need to be investigated. Many teachers have different signs for certain mathematics terms and it is possible that a lack of standardization may influence learning. There is a particular need to investigate perceptions of technical signs in order to help prepare new teachers who pursue careers in mathematics education for the deaf. The present project was designed to assist new and experienced mathematics teachers and interpreters for the deaf as well as …

The Social Studies Classroom: Attitudes And Perspective From The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students Through Literature, Amanda Sievers

Theses

Millions of children attend elementary, middle and high schools throughout the country to be instructed by teachers within six major subjects. Out of six main subjects taught in academic schools, social studies has been proven as one of the most difficult yet complex subjects among students especially the deaf and hard of hearing students. It has been noted where social studies, elaborate and diverse as it may be, have created an environment where most students have the tendency to associate this subject with negative attitudes and experiences. Critical factors contribute to the overall decline interest in socials studies such as …

The Quality Of Textbooks Used In Science Education: A Study Of Four Schools Serving Deaf Students, Matthew Boyd

Theses

Over the years, science achievement scores in the United States have been declining despite the movement towards reforming science and math education. A review of the literature reveals that the issue of the quality of textbooks used in science education is not often mentioned. In this paper, the author evaluates the quality of textbooks used in science education in four schools and discusses the findings relative to curriculum reform. Two Public and two Deaf Residential schools were surveyed, one each respectively, from the state of New York and Pennsylvania. Only the books used in 11th- 12th grade science classes were …

Creation Of Optical Vortices In Femtosecond Pulses, I. G. Mariyenko, James Strohaber, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal

C.J.G.J. Uiterwaal Publications

We experimentally created a femtosecond optical vortex using a pair of computer-synthesized holographic gratings arranged in a 2f - 2f optical setup. We present measurements showing that the resulting donut mode is free of spatial chirp, and support this finding with an analysis of the optical wave propagation through our system based on the Kirchhoff- Fresnel diffraction integral. An interferogram confirms that our ultrashort vortex has topological charge 1, and a conservative experimental estimation of its duration is 280 fs. We used 25-fs radiation pulses (bandwidth approximately 40 nm) produced by a Ti:sapphire laser oscillator.

Discretisation For Odd Quadratic Twists, J. Brian Conrey, Michael O. Rubinstein, Nina C. Snaith, Mark Watkins Sep 2005

Discretisation For Odd Quadratic Twists, J. Brian Conrey, Michael O. Rubinstein, Nina C. Snaith, Mark Watkins

Mathematics - All Scholarship

The discretisation problem for even quadratic twists is almost understood, with the main question now being how the arithmetic Delaunay heuristic interacts with the analytic random matrix theory prediction. The situation for odd quadratic twists is much more mysterious, as the height of a point enters the picture, which does not necessarily take integral values (as does the order of the Shafarevich-Tate group). We discuss a couple of models and present data on this question.
