Strategic Behavior In Day-Ahead And Real-Time Markets For Electricity: Offer Cost Or Payment Cost Minimization?, Nicholas Shunda Oct 2005

Strategic Behavior In Day-Ahead And Real-Time Markets For Electricity: Offer Cost Or Payment Cost Minimization?, Nicholas Shunda

Economics Working Papers

This study compares the procurement cost-minimizing and productive efficiency performance of the auction mechanism used by independent system operators (ISOs) in wholesale electricity auction markets in the U.S. with that of a proposed alternative. The current practice allocates energy contracts as if the auction featured a discriminatory final payment method when, in fact, the markets are uniform price auctions. The proposed alternative explicitly accounts for the market clearing price during the allocation phase. We find that the proposed alternative largely outperforms the current practice on the basis of procurement costs in the context of simple auction markets featuring both day-ahead …

Prizes Versus Wages With Envy And Pride, Pradeep Dubey, John Geanakoplos, Ori Haimanko

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We show that if agents are risk neutral, prizes outperform wages when there is sufficient pride and envy relative to the noisiness of performance. If agents are risk averse, prizes are a necessary supplement to wages (as bonuses).

Combinatorial Theorems About Embedding Trees On The Real Line, Amit Chakrabarti, Subhash Khot Oct 2005

Combinatorial Theorems About Embedding Trees On The Real Line, Amit Chakrabarti, Subhash Khot

Computer Science Technical Reports

We consider the combinatorial problem of embedding a tree metric into the real line with low distortion. For two special families of trees --- the family of complete binary trees and the family of subdivided stars --- we provide embeddings whose distortion is provably optimal, up to a constant factor. We also prove that the optimal distortion of a linear embedding of a tree can be arbitrarily low or high even when it has bounded degree.

A Quasi-Ptas For Unsplittable Flow On Line Graphs, Nikhil Bansal, Amit Chakrabarti, Amir Epstein, Baruch Schieber

Computer Science Technical Reports

We study the Unsplittable Flow Problem (UFP) on a line graph, focusing on the long-standing open question of whether the problem is APX-hard. We describe a deterministic quasi-polynomial time approximation scheme for UFP on line graphs, thereby ruling out an APX-hardness result, unless NP is contained in DTIME(2^polylog(n)). Our result requires a quasi-polynomial bound on all edge capacities and demands in the input instance. Earlier results on this problem included a polynomial time (2+epsilon)-approximation under the assumption that no demand exceeds any edge capacity (the "no-bottleneck assumption") and a super-constant integrality gap if this assumption did not hold. Unlike most …

Ranking Inequality: Applications Of Multivariate Subset Selection, William C. Horrace, Joseph T. Marchand, Timothy M. Smeeding Oct 2005

Ranking Inequality: Applications Of Multivariate Subset Selection, William C. Horrace, Joseph T. Marchand, Timothy M. Smeeding

Center for Policy Research

Inequality measures are often presented in the form of a rank ordering to highlight their relative magnitudes. However, a rank ordering may produce misleading inference, because the inequality measures themselves are statistical estimators with different standard errors, and because a rank ordering necessarily implies multiple comparisons across all measures. Within this setting, if differences between several inequality measures are simultaneously and statistically insignificant, the interpretation of the ranking is changed. This study uses a multivariate subset selection procedure to make simultaneous distinctions across inequality measures at a pre-specified confidence level. Three applications of this procedure are explored using country-level data …

Arge-Encoded N-Acetyl-L-Ornithine Deacetylase From Escherichia Coli Contains A Dinuclear Metalloactive Site, Wade C. Mcgregor, Sabina I. Swierczek, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

The catalytic and structural properties of the argE-encoded N-acetyl-l-ornithine deacetylase (ArgE) from Escherichia coli were investigated. On the basis of kinetic and ITC (isothermal titration calorimetry) data, Zn(II) binds to ArgE with Kd values that differ by ∼20 times. Moreover, ArgE exhibits ∼90% of its full catalytic activity upon addition of one metal ion. Therefore, ArgE behaves similarly to the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP) in that one metal ion is the catalytic metal ion while the second likely plays a structural role. The N-acetyl-l-ornithine (NAO) deacetylase activity of ArgE showed a linear temperature dependence from …

The Community Income Theory Of The Charitable Contributions Deduction, Johnny Rex Buckles Oct 2005

The Community Income Theory Of The Charitable Contributions Deduction, Johnny Rex Buckles

Indiana Law Journal

The charitable contributions deduction, a longstanding yet controversial feature of the Internal Revenue Code, has been justified under subsidy theories and tax-base theories. Focusing on the latter, this Article presents and explains a new tax-base theory in support of the charitable contributions deduction-the community income theory. This theory posits that some income, designated as "community income, " is properly excluded from the personal income tax base because it is more naturally attributed to the community than to the individual members of the community. Adopting the presumption that the community generally should be treated as a tax exempt entity, this Article …

Enhancing Long-Term Retention In The Basic Managerial Finance Course, D. Stuart Bancroft, Larry P. Hegstad Oct 2005

Enhancing Long-Term Retention In The Basic Managerial Finance Course, D. Stuart Bancroft, Larry P. Hegstad

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Students typically perceive the basic finance course to consist of a series of complex and disparate topics, each with its own conceptual framework, equations, and graphs. In the absence of a meaningful cognitive structure, they may fall back on rote memorization and find it difficult to internalize financial decision making fundamentals. Some tenets of learning theory offer useful insights into ways to organize classroom instruction for the purpose of enhancing long-term retention of critical concepts and procedures.

Helping Accounting Graduates Kill Two Birds With One Stone: An Education Designed For Success, Neal R. Vanzante Oct 2005

Helping Accounting Graduates Kill Two Birds With One Stone: An Education Designed For Success, Neal R. Vanzante

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Accounting educators have long debated the role that accounting programs should play in preparing students for professional examinations. Much of this debate has focused on preparation for the CPA Examination compared to preparation for a successful accounting career. The increased length of accounting education programs and recent revisions of both the CPA andCMA Examination provide accounting educators with the unique opportunity to offer accounting education programs that help graduates achieve successful accounting careers while focusing their efforts on successful completion of these examinations.

The article’s theme is that preparation for the CPA and CMA examinations is consistent with the goal …

The Effects Of Government Reimbursement On Hospital Costs:Some Empirical Evidence From Washington State, Dan Friesner, Robert Rosenman, Matthew Mcpherson Oct 2005

The Effects Of Government Reimbursement On Hospital Costs:Some Empirical Evidence From Washington State, Dan Friesner, Robert Rosenman, Matthew Mcpherson

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

We use a panel of hospitals from Washington state to examine the impact of government reimbursement on a provider’s costs. We find that providers change their relative patient mix when Medicare and Medicaid lower reimbursement rates. On a percentage change basis, the magnitudes of these changes are small; however, the overall economic impacts are quite large. Additionally, our findings indicate that a number of other factors significantly influence a provider’s costs, including patient demographics, initial illness severity and input market conditions facing the firm.

We thank two anonymous reviewers for their helpful comments. We also thank William Greene for valuable …

Maximum Size Of Fish Caught With Standard Gears And Recreational Angling, Kevin L. Pope, Gene R. Wilde, Daryl L. Bauer Oct 2005

Maximum Size Of Fish Caught With Standard Gears And Recreational Angling, Kevin L. Pope, Gene R. Wilde, Daryl L. Bauer

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We correlated maximum lengths of freshwater fishes captured during 10 years with standard gears (i.e., gill nets, boat electrofishers and trap nets) and angling from Nebraska water bodies to determine which methodology provided better estimates of maximum size of fishes produced within a given water body. In general, maximum length of fishes captured with standard gears was smaller than maximum length of fishes captured with angling. Although significant (based on sequential Bonferroni adjustment) correlation was found in only one of nine sport fishes assessed, all correlations were positive indicating a general trend between maximum size of fishes captured with these …
