Meanings In The Lives Of Older Adults: In Their Own Voices, Isabel A. Trombetti
Meanings In The Lives Of Older Adults: In Their Own Voices, Isabel A. Trombetti
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation attempts to advance our understanding of how we as human beings perceive, judge, and evaluate our lives, particularly in the last stage of the life cycle. The primary goal was to counterbalance the predominantly quantitative approach to meaning in life with a qualitative approach by interviewing 21 older adults as they reflected on and attempted to find purpose and value in the totality of their experiences. This goal was explicit on the point of wanting older adults, those ideally positioned in the lifespan to inform us about meaning in life, to speak without the restriction associated with response …

Science Instruction And English Language Learners, Dekey P. Lama
Science Instruction And English Language Learners, Dekey P. Lama
Graduate Research Papers
More students with limited English proficiency attending U.S. public schools merits a reassessment of science teaching approaches so such students can succeed in these areas. Federal and state governments have initiated steps which allow school districts to lead in the development of quality science education programs to assist English language learners in science learning. Successful science teachers develop courses employing research-based curricula with relevant content and recognition of students' cultures, and English language learning needs and styles. Students' interaction with content and materials in the classroom, especially those based on related local problems, encourages their success in comprehending the relevance …

English Language Learner Program At Irving Elementary : Finding A Life Preserver For Sink Or Swim Education, Pamela Argotsinger
English Language Learner Program At Irving Elementary : Finding A Life Preserver For Sink Or Swim Education, Pamela Argotsinger
Graduate Research Papers
Each year the United States becomes more ethnically and linguistically diverse and as a result, so do our schools. Students from non-English speaking backgrounds represent the fastest growing subset of the K-12 student population. In the 2003-2004 school year, 5.5 million school-age children were English language learners (Leos, 2004). As school districts across the country are faced with initiating and implementing programs for these learners, they must factor in the high stakes of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and the possible impact of a new group of test scores on their adequate yearly progress.
The purpose of this …

Poster session presented at the meeting of the Psychonomic Society. College students were trained according to one of two standardized task protocols: spatial (mental rotation) or linguistic (letter classification).Testing consisted of multiple randomized trials with and without background music (classical piano) at two levels of task difficulty. Raw data for both tasks were response time and accuracy. Background music increased the speed of spatial processing at both difficulty levels, while accuracy of processing remained unaffected. In contrast, background music increased the accuracy of linguistic processing, while speed of processing remained unaffected. These findings, integrated with those of a previous experiment …

Constructing Authority In Lope De Vega's Egloga A Claudio: Self-Referentiality, Literary Judgment, And Ethics, Mark J. Mascia
Languages Faculty Publications
The poetry of Lope de Vega has most often been analyzed for its treatment of themes such as love, religious devotion, or autobiographical introspection. However, one other key aspect of his poetry, especially of his longer poetical works (such as his epistolas and eglogas), is the engagement of literature and ethical concerns often related to the art of writing poetry. The purpose of this study is to examine one such work, the Egloga a Claudio (1631), a lengthy poem which normally should be classified as an epistola, for its role as l literary vehicle for passing judgment on …
International Animal Rights: Speciesism And Exclusionary Human Dignity, Kyle Ash
International Animal Rights: Speciesism And Exclusionary Human Dignity, Kyle Ash
Animal Law Review
The primary goal of this paper is to act as a heuristic device, to suggest an unconventional but practical perspective on the evolution of international law. Upon surveying discourse on the history of international law, texts of treaties, and declarations and writings of influential philosophers of law and morality, an antiquated perspective of humanity is apparent. A convention in international law, and a reflection of a common idea which feeds the foreboding trend of how humans relate to the planet, treats humanity as distinctively separate from the Earth’s biodiversity. Though environmental law is beginning to recognize the necessity of conserving …

The Impact Of Hearing Loss On Deaf, Hard-Of-Hearing, And Hearing Family Members, Kara Brooks
Honors Capstones
No matter what area of communicative disorders a student chooses to pursue (speech-language pathology, audiology, rehabilitation counseling, etc.), he or she will undoubtedly be a provider of services to those who have impairments/disabilities and their families. Recommended practice supports the participation of a multitude of family members. This serves to benefit the individual with the impairment/disability. The study began with basic research. Information was gathered from books, professional websites, and other sources on the topic of interest. This served to provide a basic understanding of the deaf and hard of hearing populations and their families, and to learn data gathering …

Charter Schools In An Arena Of Competitive Educational Reforms: An Analysis Of The 1999-2000 Schools And Staffing Survey, Zeng Lin, Dianne C. Gardner, W. Paul Vogt
Charter Schools In An Arena Of Competitive Educational Reforms: An Analysis Of The 1999-2000 Schools And Staffing Survey, Zeng Lin, Dianne C. Gardner, W. Paul Vogt
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Accountability, choice, equity, and social cohesion are core parts of the public debates over the charter school movement. To examine these important issues, we utilize the 1999-2000 Schools and Staffing Survey to estimate the possible charter effect on public and private schools. Analyses of charter, public, and private schools suggest that they may co-exist in a competitive education system because each type of school demonstrates different advantages that present potentially attractive conditions for children. The charter movement has changed the landscape of competitive education reform in the United States. It is premature, however, to claim that the charter movement has …

In Fergus Millar's discussion of his teacher, Ronald Syme, he states, "we can afford to take his stature as a historian as a presupposition and should not shirk the duty of asking what his work has been, what we have learnt from it" (p. 399). Likewise, now that Millar's papers have been intelligently collected into two volumes, the second of which roughly covers the first four centuries of our era, we attempt to ascertain the significance of one of the most influential ancient historians of the last forty years.

Visionary Thinker And Wordsmith Par Excellence, David E. Wilkins
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
I was part of a small cohort of Native students, thrilled at the possibility of studying with a man we affectionately, and with some trepidation, referred to as "the Godfather" of Indian politics, policy and law. We called ourselves "Vine's Disciples," not because he was a religious figure, but because we sensed that in having the privilege and opportunity studying with the individual we all considered the most gifted of our time, that we would receive profound lessons in what was required of us as we sought to become active and informed defenders of indigenous nationhood.
What an influence he …
Secular Change In The Skull Between American Blacks And Whites, Nicole Danielle Truesdell
Secular Change In The Skull Between American Blacks And Whites, Nicole Danielle Truesdell
LSU Master's Theses
Biologically, discernable differences exist between and within populations based on environmental and genetic factors. Understanding these differences is necessary in forensic anthropology as biological ancestry is asked of forensic anthropologists when assessing an individual’s biological profile. In order to make this assessment, secular changes in population dynamics need to be tracked. The purpose of this research is to examine nonmetric racial characteristics in the skull between American blacks and whites. This study used twelve nonmetric traits as criteria on two different temporal groups from collections at the Smithsonian Institution (N=408) and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (N=218). Frequencies were calculated, …

One among these organizations is the Art of Living, a non-governmental spiritual organization that has risen in popularity since 1996. This thesis concentrates on the Art of Living as an organization and of the dissemination of the new spirituality through this institution. This research study pertains to the identity of self and of the sense of nationhood through the discourse and the practice of certain …

Strategies And Beliefs About Conflict Resolution: Comparing Children With Language-Learning Disorders To Children With Typical Language Development, Karmen Louise Porter
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of the current study was to compare the conflict resolution skills and beliefs of children with Language and Learning Disorders (LLD) to those with typically developing language (TDL). All of the participants were drawn from a rural middle school in southeastern Louisiana. The independent variable was linguistic ability and it included two groups of children, thirteen with LLD and a comparison group of eight controls with TDL. The children’s conflict resolution skills and beliefs were collected by giving the children a hypothetical scenario of conflict and then asking them about resolution through an interview format. Conflict resolution measures …
Fuzzifying [Sic] Markov Decision Process, Ahmed Syed Irshad
Fuzzifying [Sic] Markov Decision Process, Ahmed Syed Irshad
LSU Master's Theses
Markov decision processes have become an indispensable tool in applications as diverse as equipment maintenance, manufacturing systems, inventory control, queuing networks and investment analysis. Typically we have a controlled Markov chain on a suitable state space in which transitional probabilities depend on the policy (or decision maker) which comes from a set of possible actions. The main problem of interest would be to find an optimal policy that minimizes the associated cost. Linear Programming has been widely used to find the optimal Markov decision policy. It requires solutions of large systems of simultaneous linear equations. By the fact that the …
