Case Studies Of Local Boards And One-Stop Centers: Tackling Fiscal Issues, Heike Boeltzig, Allison Cohen Hall
Case Studies Series, Institute for Community Inclusion
The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) established a network of One-Stop Career Centers by integrating different employment and training services into one comprehensive workforce investment system. Within this environment, One-Stop partners are mandated to collaborate to create a seamless service delivery system that enhances access to services and improves employment outcomes for all individuals, including those with disabilities. WIA's intent was to establish local workforce development systems that would respond to their areas' specific needs with unique solutions and creative partnerships. In addition to service delivery, WIA encourages One-Stop partners to share in the operating costs of the One-Stop …

Teacher Education And Critical Inquiry : The Use Of Activity Theory In Exploring Alternative Understandings Of Language And Literature, Brenton Doecke, Alex Kostogriz
Teacher Education And Critical Inquiry : The Use Of Activity Theory In Exploring Alternative Understandings Of Language And Literature, Brenton Doecke, Alex Kostogriz
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This article explores the challenges of espousing a critical pedagogy within the managerial climate that presently shapes teacher education. Current discourses of professionalism are incommensurate with an understanding of the way that literacy practices are grounded in the social worlds in which both school and university students operate. Such discourses construct graduate teachers as the providers of decontextualised literacy skills to school students whose existing communication networks are ignored. We argue that an alternative understanding of professional practice can be developed by focusing on the textual resources university students use to mediate their learning, and by locating their emerging professional …

Video Summarization And Scene Detection By Graph Modeling, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang
Video Summarization And Scene Detection By Graph Modeling, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose a unified approach for video summarization based on the analysis of video structures and video highlights. Two major components in our approach are scene modeling and highlight detection. Scene modeling is achieved by normalized cut algorithm and temporal graph analysis, while highlight detection is accomplished by motion attention modeling. In our proposed approach, a video is represented as a complete undirected graph and the normalized cut algorithm is carried out to globally and optimally partition the graph into video clusters. The resulting clusters form a directed temporal graph and a shortest path algorithm is proposed …
Liberty Versus Property? Cracks In The Foundation Of Copyright Law, Richard A. Epstein
Liberty Versus Property? Cracks In The Foundation Of Copyright Law, Richard A. Epstein
San Diego Law Review
The purpose of this Article is to recanvass what is surely old and familiar territory about the defense, if any, that can be made for various forms of intellectual property - in this instance, particularly copyright - as a matter of both natural law and utilitarian theory, broadly conceived. In dealing with this issue, it is important to note that within the Lockean tradition, the function of representative government is to protect the lives, liberties, and estates of the individuals who, as subjects and citizens, are subject to the exercise of state power. Part I of this Article is an …

OBJECTIVE: The pre-participation physical examination (PPE) has become the standard of care for athletes of all ages. The PPE is generally intended to identify medical conditions that may affect safe and effective participation in organized sports. The aim of this study is to validate and to implement a standardized questionnaire in Turkish language, which might aid Turkish physicians during the PPE. METHODS: A total of 1350 athletes visiting the yearly PPE of the Directorate of Sports and Youth in Isparta, Turkey were asked to participate in this study between October 2001 and November 2001. Eight hundred and ten (60%) students …
Negotiation Of Software Requirements In An Asynchronous Collaborative Environment, Catherine Lowry Campbell
Negotiation Of Software Requirements In An Asynchronous Collaborative Environment, Catherine Lowry Campbell
Dissertations
The effect of task structure and negotiation sequence on collaborative software requirements negotiation is investigated. This work began with an extensive literature review that focused on current research in collaborative software engineering and, in particular, on the negotiation of software requirements and the requisite collaboration for the development of such requirements. A formal detailed experiment was then conducted to evaluate the effects of negotiation sequence and task structure in an asynchronous group meeting environment. The experiment tested the impact of these structures on groups negotiating the requirements for an emergency response information system. The results reported here show that these …
Characterizing The Evolution Of Operating Systems, Yi Peng
Characterizing The Evolution Of Operating Systems, Yi Peng
Dissertations
Examining the development and trends in software engineering technology is a huge undertaking. It is constantly evolving and affected by a large number of factors, which are themselves driven by a wide range of sub-factors. This dissertation is part of a long term project intended to analyze software engineering technology trends and how they evolve. This project is intended to analyze operating system trends and what are the factors that drive how they evolve. Basically, the following questions will be answered: "How to watch, predict, adapt to, and affect operating system's evolution trends?"
In previous research, YF Chen used statistical …
Pattern Discovery In Structural Databases With Applications To Bioinformatics, Sen Zhang
Pattern Discovery In Structural Databases With Applications To Bioinformatics, Sen Zhang
Dissertations
Frequent structure mining (FSM) aims to discover and extract patterns frequently occurring in structural data such as trees and graphs. FSM finds many applications in bioinformatics, XML processing, Web log analysis, and so on. In this thesis, two new FSM techniques are proposed for finding patterns in unordered labeled trees. Such trees can be used to model evolutionary histories of different species, among others.
The first FSM technique finds cousin pairs in the trees. A cousin pair is a pair of nodes sharing the same parent, the same grandparent, or the same great-grandparent, etc. Given a tree T, our …
Ancient Voyages Across The Ocean To America: From “Impossible” To “Certain”, John L. Sorenson
Ancient Voyages Across The Ocean To America: From “Impossible” To “Certain”, John L. Sorenson
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
In the past, experts have assumed that primitive sailors would have found it impossible to cross the oceans between the Old World and the New. However, John Sorenson here concludes that the evidence for transoceanic contacts now drowns out the arguments of those who have seen the New World as an isolated island until ad 1492. Sorenson’s arguments are based on evidences from Europe, Asia, and Polynesia of the diffusion of New World plants and infectious organisms. His research identifies evidence for transoceanic exchanges of 98 plant species, including tobacco and peanuts. The presence of hookworm in both the Americas …
The Hebrew Text Of Alma 7:11, Thomas A. Wayment
The Hebrew Text Of Alma 7:11, Thomas A. Wayment
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The brass plates were essential to Lehi’s posterity since they contained the teachings that would lead them to righteousness; there are quotations from the brass plates throughout the Book of Mormon. We do not know what language or languages were used on the plates that came from Laban’s trove. Alma’s rendering of an unattributed Isaiah quotation is closer to the Hebrew text than are the versions found in the Septuagint and King James Bible. But when this same quotation appears a second time in the Book of Mormon and is attributed to Isaiah, it follows the KJV rendering. This curiosity …

Attempts To Redefine The Experience Of The Eight Witnesses, Richard Lloyd Anderson
Attempts To Redefine The Experience Of The Eight Witnesses, Richard Lloyd Anderson
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Skeptics have misused some historical sources as they attempt to reverse the Eight Witnesses’ statements about their physical contact with the Book of Mormon plates. The Eight Witnesses speak of viewing the plates themselves with unobstructed vision. They left 10 specific statements of handling the plates. This article provides an overview of the statements and experiences of the Eight Witnesses and the arguments of their critics, both then and now. Their unequivocal testimonies resist revisionists’ attempts to portray their experience as mere illusion or deception.
Treaties And Covenants: Ancient Near Eastern Legal Terminology In The Book Of Mormon, Roseann Benson, Stephen D. Ricks
Treaties And Covenants: Ancient Near Eastern Legal Terminology In The Book Of Mormon, Roseann Benson, Stephen D. Ricks
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Ancient Near Eastern treaties and Old Testament covenants exhibit many of the same literary elements. Of particular interest is the use of the Hebrew word y?da? ,“to know,” when it signifies “to enter into a binding agreement.” The use of this word in both treaties and scriptures supports the notion that prophets spoke of holy covenants using language that framed responsibilities between God and his people in legal terms. The Book of Mormon usage of to know reflects similar intent. This article discusses the background of the word to know, compares treaties with covenants, discusses to know in connection …
“Strange Characters And Expressions”: Three Japanese Translations Of The Book Of Mormon, Van C. Gessel
“Strange Characters And Expressions”: Three Japanese Translations Of The Book Of Mormon, Van C. Gessel
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The complete Book of Mormon has been translated into Japanese no fewer than three times. The first translation was done by a young American missionary, Alma O. Taylor, the second by Sat Tatsui, the first native Japanese person to undertake the challenge, and the third after World War II by a committee appointed by the First Presidency. The challenges of translating concepts such as God, Spirit, or atonement into a language that shares no linguistic or cultural commonalities with the language of the inspired translation of the Book of Mormon are overwhelming. When attempting to communicate in a culture …
