Background: Severe respiratory syncytial virus infection (RSV) during infancy has been shown to be a major risk factor for the development of subsequent wheeze. However, the reasons for this link remain unclear. The objective of this research was to determine the consequences of early exposure to RSV and allergen in the development of subsequent airway hyperreactivity (AHR) using a developmental time point in the mouse that parallels that of the human neonate. Methods: Weanling mice were sensitized and challeged with ovalbumin (Ova) and/or infected with RSV. Eight days after the last allergen challenge, various pathophysiological endpoints were examined. Results: AHR …

The Role Of The Federal Government In Response To Catastrophic Health Emergencies: Lessons Learned From Hurricane Katrina, Michael Greenberger
The Role Of The Federal Government In Response To Catastrophic Health Emergencies: Lessons Learned From Hurricane Katrina, Michael Greenberger
Faculty Scholarship
In much of the recent thought devoted to the role of states in responding to catastrophic public health emergencies, as most clearly evidenced by the commentary surrounding the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention- sponsored Model State Emergency Health Powers Act (Model Act), there is a focus on state governments being viewed as the exclusive controlling governmental agent supervising the governmental response. Much of that thinking is premised on a view of limitations placed on Congress’ power to act in public health emergencies emanating from Commerce Clause restrictions in the Supreme Court decisions of U.S. v. Lopez, 514 U.S. 549 …

Endogenous Human Cytomegalovirus Gb Is Presented Efficiently By Mhc Class Ii Molecules To Cd4+ Ctl, Nagendra R. Hegde, Claire Dunn, David M. Lewinsohn, Michael A. Jarvis, Jay A. Nelson, David C. Johnson
School of Biomedical Sciences
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infects endothelial, epithelial, and glial cells in vivo. These cells can express MHC class II proteins, but are unlikely to play important roles in priming host immunity. Instead, it seems that class II presentation of endogenous HCMV antigens in these cells allows recognition of virus infection. We characterized class II presentation of HCMV glycoprotein B (gB), a membrane protein that accumulates extensively in endosomes during virus assembly. Human CD4+ T cells specific for gB were both highly abundant in blood and cytolytic in vivo. gB-specific CD4+ T cell clones recognized gB that was expressed in …

Removing Violent Parents From The Home: A Test Case For The Public Health Approach, Robin Fretwell Wilson
Removing Violent Parents From The Home: A Test Case For The Public Health Approach, Robin Fretwell Wilson
Faculty Scholarship
Few decisions are as determinative of a child’s well-being and long-term success as the decision to remove a child from his or her own home following an allegation of abuse by a parent. Using the public health lens Professor Marsha Garrison develops elsewhere in this Issue, this Comment examines one of the most critical questions Child Protective Services agencies face thousands of times a day: whether to remove a child who is a possible victim of abuse or neglect from his or her home. This evidence-based approach shows that the choice to remove the child rather than the alleged offender …

Background
Hookworms infect 730 million people in developing countries where they are a leading cause of intestinal blood loss and iron-deficiency anemia. At the site of attachment to the host, adult hookworms ingest blood and lyse the erythrocytes to release hemoglobin. The parasites subsequently digest hemoglobin in their intestines using a cascade of proteolysis that begins with the Ancylostoma caninum aspartic protease 1, APR-1.
Methods and Findings
We show that vaccination of dogs with recombinant Ac-APR-1 induced antibody and cellular responses and resulted in significantly reduced hookworm burdens (p = 0.056) and fecal egg counts (p = …

Canada’S National Chronic Wasting Disease Control Strategy
Canada’S National Chronic Wasting Disease Control Strategy
Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications
The objective of Canada’s National Chronic Wasting Disease Control Strategy is to establish a coordinated national policy and a disease response and management framework to minimize the negative impacts of Chronic Wasting Disease on biodiversity, human and livestock health, the environment and the economy. The ultimate objective of this Strategy is to eradicate Chronic Wasting Disease from Canada or, failing this, to achieve the tightest possible control of the disease so that it does not spread to new geographic areas or to new species, and so that its environmental, economic and health impacts are minimized. As mandated by the federalprovincial/ …
Conditional Cash Transfers: Progress Towards The Millennium Development Goals, Blase Kornacki
Conditional Cash Transfers: Progress Towards The Millennium Development Goals, Blase Kornacki
PEEL Alumni Scholarship
Conditional cash transfer programs are transforming Latin America’s approach to social welfare. CCTs provide money to families living in extreme poverty in exchange for the commitment to invest in human capital. The programs aim at replacing the “traditional supply-side mechanisms” with “demand-side interventions to directly support beneficiaries.” Traditional mechanisms battled poverty with subsidies or direct investments in public goods, whereas the new approach channels support directly to the people and promotes investment in human capital, using market approaches as an incentive to use social services such as primary and secondary education and local health centers.
