Undefining Man: A Case For Symbolic Animal Communication Via Refutation Of Kenneth Burke's "Definition Of Man", Stephen J. Lind Apr 2005

Undefining Man: A Case For Symbolic Animal Communication Via Refutation Of Kenneth Burke's "Definition Of Man", Stephen J. Lind

Senior Honors Theses

There have been tendencies in various fields to use communication as a way of differentiating humans and other species. Even when individuals are confronted with empirical evidence to the contrary, many still hold onto the notion that humans are in a communicative position clearly divergent in all ways from animals. This thesis will utilize Kenneth Burke's "Definition of Man" as a launching point to support a claim that animals utilize their conscious cognitive abilities to communicate symbolically.

An Investigation Into Palladium-Catalyzed Reduction Of Perchlorate In Water, Eric G. Barney Mar 2005

An Investigation Into Palladium-Catalyzed Reduction Of Perchlorate In Water, Eric G. Barney

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, application of a catalytic reactor to facilitate chemical reduction of perchlorate was investigated. Palladium-coated pellets were used as the catalyst, and formic acid was used as the reductant. Reactor performance was evaluated under a variety of operating conditions (influent pH, reductant concentration, residence time). Very little perchlorate reduction was observed under any operating condition. At best, approximately 8% perchlorate reduction was observed. This small reduction efficiency is clearly not sufficient for environmental treatment applications. Perchlorate strongly adsorbed to the catalyst at low pH (3 - 3.3). At higher pH (4 - 10), little adsorption was observed. This …

Effects Of An Impedance Threshold Valve Upon Hemodynamics In Standard Cpr: Studies In A Refined Computational Model, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

An impedance threshold valve (ITV) is a new airway adjunct for resuscitation that permits generation of a small vacuum in the chest during the recoil phase of chest compression. Objectives: To explore in detail the expected magnitude and the hemodynamic mechanisms of circulatory augmentation by an ITV in standard CPR. Method: A 14-compartment mathematical model of the human cardiopulmonary system—upgraded to include applied chest compression force, elastic recoil of the chest wall, anatomic details of the heart and lungs, and the biomechanics of mediastinal compression—is exercised to explore the conditions required for circulatory augmentation by an ITV during various modes …

In Vitro Toxicity Of Cadmium Oxide Particles In Brl 3a Rat Liver Cells, Janice M. Shelley Mar 2005

In Vitro Toxicity Of Cadmium Oxide Particles In Brl 3a Rat Liver Cells, Janice M. Shelley

Theses and Dissertations

For the last decade or so, in vitro toxicology has been studied as a method for determining human toxicity, as well as hazard identification and characterization. One purpose of in vitro studies is to determine the possibility of developing systems in which the toxicity of chemicals can be quantified, without heavy reliance on animal experimentation. Specific data pertaining to cadmium toxicity in humans through use of in vitro methods and models is sparse, at best. There is a need to complete more studies and collect more data to study particular chemicals and their effects and to complete proper evaluation and …

Using Online Assessment To Inform Teaching And Learning In Primary And Secondary Classrooms, Jim Tognolini Jan 2005

Using Online Assessment To Inform Teaching And Learning In Primary And Secondary Classrooms, Jim Tognolini

2005 - Using data to support learning

In the 1980’s there was a conscious effort around Australia and in many other countries around the world to shift the focus in assessment from notions of passing and failing to those of monitoring growth; from comparing students against each other to building up an image of what it is that students know and can do at particular stages in their development; and, from collecting marks to summarise performance to providing students and teachers with information from assessment activities that can be used to help diagnose potential weaknesses and strengths and lead to improved learning. The Australian Council for Educational …

Effects Of Food Attributes And Feeding Environment On Acceptance, Consumption And Body Weight: Lessons Learned In A Twenty-Year Program Of Military Ration Research, Edward S. Hirsch, F. Matthew Kramer, Herbert L. Meiselman Jan 2005

Effects Of Food Attributes And Feeding Environment On Acceptance, Consumption And Body Weight: Lessons Learned In A Twenty-Year Program Of Military Ration Research, Edward S. Hirsch, F. Matthew Kramer, Herbert L. Meiselman

United States Army: Publications

Twenty years of testing in the field has consistently revealed that food intake is inadequate when packaged military rations are fed as the sole source of food. Food intake is much lower and there is a loss of body weight. Conversely when these rations are fed to students or military personnel for periods ranging from 3 to 42 days in a cafeteria-like setting, food intake is comparable to levels of a control group provided with freshly prepared food. Under these conditions, body weight is maintained. In this review, the consumption pattern is considered in terms of characteristics of the food …

The Social Construct Of Main Street, St. Charles, Missouri, Jennifer Marie Vanhouten Jan 2005

The Social Construct Of Main Street, St. Charles, Missouri, Jennifer Marie Vanhouten

Theses

This thesis examines the revitalization of Main Street in St. Charles, Missouri, during the late twentieth century, focusing on how local actors reimagined and reconstructed the district’s historic character. At the center of this process was the restoration of the First Missouri State Capitol, a project undertaken by the Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority (LCRA) and other civic partners. This effort not only preserved a landmark but also catalyzed a broader campaign of urban renewal that recast Main Street as a heritage district and cultural destination.

The study situates this case within Dolores Hayden’s framework on the power of place …

Method Of Infant Feeding As A Predictor Of Maternal Responsiveness, Emily Eiwen Drake Jan 2005

Method Of Infant Feeding As A Predictor Of Maternal Responsiveness, Emily Eiwen Drake

Theses and Dissertations

Infants need to develop effective, secure attachment to their primary caregivers in the first year of life. Researchers have not been able to identify all the factors that may influence the development of infant attachment. Most of the studies in this area have been done without regard to infant feeding as a potential factor. Maternal responsiveness appears to be key in the child's development of secure attachment behaviors, yet even after decades of research on infant attachment and maternal responsiveness, there is little evidence available to assist with early identification of families at risk and few interventions known to be …
