Robust Pre-Processing Techniques For Non-Ideal Iris Images, Purva M. Barve Dec 2005

Robust Pre-Processing Techniques For Non-Ideal Iris Images, Purva M. Barve

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The human iris has been demonstrated to be a very accurate, non-invasive and easy-to-use biometric for personal identification. Most of the current state-of-the-art iris recognition systems require the iris acquisition to be ideal. A lot of constraints are hence put on the user and the acquisition process.;Our aim in this research is to relax these conditions and to develop a pre-processing algorithm, which can be used in conjunction with any matching algorithm to handle the so-called non-ideal iris images. In this thesis we present a few robust techniques to process the non-ideal iris images so as to give a segmented …

Melatonin, Immune Function And Aging, V. Srinivasan, Georges J.M. Maestroni, Daniel P. Cardinali, A. I. Esquifino, S. R. Pandi Perumal, Sandra C. Miller

ETSU Faculty Works

Aging is associated with a decline in immune function (immunosenescence), a situation known to correlate with increased incidence of cancer, infectious and degenerative diseases. Innate, cellular and humoral immunity all exhibit increased deterioration with age. A decrease in functional competence of individual natural killer (NK) cells is found with advancing age. Macrophages and granulocytes show functional decline in aging as evidenced by their diminished phagocytic activity and impairment of superoxide generation. There is also marked shift in cytokine profile as age advances, e.g., CD3+ and CD4+ cells decline in number whereas CD8+ cells increase in elderly individuals. A decline in …

Knowledge And Mortality In Blade Runner And Genesis 2-3, Kyle Keefer Oct 2005

Knowledge And Mortality In Blade Runner And Genesis 2-3, Kyle Keefer

Journal of Religion & Film

Definition of humanity's limits is a paramount concern for both the Hebrew creation myth of Genesis and the film Blade Runner. The film works as an interpretation of the biblical account by presenting replicants as having gained knowledge without being able to extend their lifespan. In this sense, they have abilities and limits that parallel those of the first man and first woman in Genesis.

Variability Of Motor Unit Discharge And Force Fluctuations Across A Range Of Muscle Forces In Older Adults, Brian L. Tracy, Katrina S. Maluf, Jennifer L. Stephenson, Sandra K. Hunter Oct 2005

Variability Of Motor Unit Discharge And Force Fluctuations Across A Range Of Muscle Forces In Older Adults, Brian L. Tracy, Katrina S. Maluf, Jennifer L. Stephenson, Sandra K. Hunter

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

Variability of motor unit discharge is a likely contributor to the greater force fluctuations observed in old adults at low muscle forces. We sought to determine whether the variability of motor unit discharge rate underlies the fluctuations in force during steady contractions across a range of forces in young (n = 11) and old (n = 14) adults. The coefficient of variation (CV) for discharge rate and force were measured during a force-matching task as the first dorsal interosseous muscle performed isometric contractions. The recruitment thresholds of the 78 motor units ranged from 0.04% to 34% of maximal …

How Students Benefit By Attending Formal Review Sessions Before Taking Written Examinations, Christopher M. Dewitt Sep 2005

How Students Benefit By Attending Formal Review Sessions Before Taking Written Examinations, Christopher M. Dewitt

Essays in Education

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether review sessions prior to written examinations affect university student performance on the examinations. It was hypothesized that students would benefit by attending formal review sessions before taking written examinations. A prospective investigational design was used to test the hypothesis.

An online review demonstrates the claimed-importance of preparatory programs before taking standardized examinations such as the GRE, SAT, or MCAT (1-4). 800score GRE Prep Software guarantees that one will achieve their highest possible score (1). GRE Comprehensive Success System claims that over 16,000 test takers passed the GRE because of their system …

Transformational Leadership Of Sales Managers And Job Satisfaction Of Sales Associates In The Fast Moving Consumer Goods Industry In Taiwan, Yu-Jia Hu Sep 2005

Transformational Leadership Of Sales Managers And Job Satisfaction Of Sales Associates In The Fast Moving Consumer Goods Industry In Taiwan, Yu-Jia Hu

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Literature review in sales content supported the theory that sales manager's transformational leadership has a vital influence on the job satisfaction of sales associates, while job satisfaction has significant influence on the sales associates' work behaviors. Very limited studies have extensively examined the relationship between sales managers' transformational leadership and sales associates' job satisfaction, while recent research has focused on how transformational leadership applies to sales management situations.

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between transformational leadership of sales managers and job satisfaction of sales associates in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry in Taiwan. …

Multifractal Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability Using Wavelet-Transform Modulus-Maxima Method, Chirag Jani Aug 2005

Multifractal Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability Using Wavelet-Transform Modulus-Maxima Method, Chirag Jani

Theses

Physiological signals are complex and carry information of human health. Recent studies reveal that under normal conditions, the heart rate time series shows multifractal behavior. In contrast, HRV in the pathological state such as congestive heart failure exhibits more monofractal-like structure. Recent advances in the assessment of heart rate variability (HRV) uses a nonlinear dynamics approach. In this study, the main objective is to use the wavelet-transform modulus-maxima method for the multifractal analysis of the heart rate time senes.

The degree of the multifractality is defined by the singularities (a point in time series where a mathematical function is not …

Synthesis And Characterization Methods Of Palladium-Doped Ceria-Zirconia Compounds, Melissa Kaye Graves-Brook Aug 2005

Synthesis And Characterization Methods Of Palladium-Doped Ceria-Zirconia Compounds, Melissa Kaye Graves-Brook

Theses and Dissertations

The main automotive catalytic media, precious metal-doped ceria-zirconia oxides, fundamental system character is unknown. Understanding the catalytic system properties should allow for the production of an optimal model catalyst. This goal of this study is to gain understanding of ceria-zirconia-palladium systems and to determine a reproducible method for preparing catalysts with minimal surface-carbon. This study investigates ceria-zirconia-palladium catalyst preparation via aqueous chemistry methods and a sputter deposition technique for doping ceria-zirconia oxide mixtures. Prepared catalysts are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XPS allows the surface species, after catalyst doping and …

Effects Of Stretching On Jumping Performance, Carisa Chavez Aug 2005

Effects Of Stretching On Jumping Performance, Carisa Chavez

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Stretching has been a part of warm-up for a very long time. Some recent research has shown that stretching could possibly hinder performance and others have shown it enhances performance. The purpose of this study was to examine whether stretching has an effect on vertical jump, and if so, how long the effects last. Twenty Western Kentucky students (10 M and 10 F) performed three trials each. There was a non-stretching group, a pre-stretching group and a between-stretching group; each of the subjects performed all three. The stretching protocol included a static stretching routine of the gluteus maximus, hamstrings, quadriceps, …

Adaptive Chaos: Mild Disorder May Help, Alexander Golbin, Alexander Umantsev Jun 2005

Adaptive Chaos: Mild Disorder May Help, Alexander Golbin, Alexander Umantsev

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Working Papers

We have qualitatively analyzed different cases of human disorders and displacement activities of animals and hypothesize that some of them are examples of low-dimensional dynamical chaos in biological organisms. We also considered a biological organism in the framework of the control system theory and found that chaotic regime in one subsystem may be compensating for the loss of chaos in another subsystem for the sake of stability of the whole system. According to the hypothesis chaotic behavior of different organs sets in a human body as an alternative to serious diseases or even death. The principle of compensation was applied …

Sensing Of Antipyretic Carboxylates By Simple Chromogenic Calix[4]Pyrroles, Ryuhei Nishiyabu, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr. Jun 2005

Sensing Of Antipyretic Carboxylates By Simple Chromogenic Calix[4]Pyrroles, Ryuhei Nishiyabu, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We present a simple, two- or three-step method for the synthesis of chromogenic octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole-based (OMCP) sensors for anions. Electrophilic aromatic substitution allows for converting the pyrrole moieties of OMCP into a dye. The formation of a sensor-anion complex results in partial charge transfer and a dramatic change in color. The absorption (UV-vis) and NMR titration experiments show that the chromogenic OMCPs sense anions administered as aqueous solutions, even at high ionic strength ( approximately 0.1 M NaCl), while displaying selectivity for pyrophosphate and carboxylate anions. The experiments with polyurethane sensor films show a strong response for aqueous carboxylates, such as …
