History, Collective Memory, And The Appropriation Of Martin Luther King, Jr.: Reagan's Rhetorical Legacy, Denise M. Bostdorff, Steven R. Goldzwig Dec 2005

History, Collective Memory, And The Appropriation Of Martin Luther King, Jr.: Reagan's Rhetorical Legacy, Denise M. Bostdorff, Steven R. Goldzwig

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This article argues that President Ronald Reagan appropriated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s words and memory to suggest equal opportunity in the United States had been largely achieved. Individuals—rather than the government—now had to take responsibility for any additional progress. By arguing that the dismantling of federal civil rights laws and social programs was actually consistent with Dr. King's words, President Reagan advanced his own agenda for civil rights in direct violation of Dr. King's intentions, while narrowing the purview of civil rights to eliminate government intervention in employment, education, and other arenas.

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

In this exploratory study, 363 interns were surveyed to assess the frequency of use and effectiveness of self-care strategies used during the internship year. Among the most frequently used strategies were family and friend social support, active problem solving, and humor. The most effective strategies were family and friend social support, seeking pleasurable experiences, and humor. A strong positive relationship was found between total scores for Frequency and Effectiveness subscales, and women reported significantly more use and effectiveness of strategies. Recommendations and resources are provided for interns and internship sites that seek to further understand and encourage intern self-care.

Psychometric Evaluation Of The Shared Care Instrument In A Sample Of Home Health Care Family Dyads, Margaret Sebern Dec 2005

Psychometric Evaluation Of The Shared Care Instrument In A Sample Of Home Health Care Family Dyads, Margaret Sebern

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Researchers have studied negative effects of caregiving on a family caregiver; however, less is known about positive aspects of exchanging assistance for both members of a family caregiving dyad. In a previous naturalistic inquiry the author indentified a basis for studying caregiving interactions was a construct called shared care. The three components of shared care identified in the naturalistic inquiry were communication, decision making, and reciprocity. The Shared Care Instrument (SCI) was developed to measure the construct. The purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the SCI, and to assess its construct and criterion-related validity. A …

The issue of how the Euclidean properties of space are represented in the nervous system is a main focus in the study of visual perception, but is equally relevant to motor learning. The goal of our experiments was to investigate how the properties of space guide the remapping of motor coordination. Subjects wore an instrumented data glove that recorded the finger motions. Signals generated by the glove operated a remotely controlled endpoint: a cursor on a computer monitor. The subjects were instructed to execute movements of this endpoint with controlled motions of the fingers. This required inverting a highly redundant …

Applying Electronic Commerce To Property Management, Paul Weist Dec 2005

Applying Electronic Commerce To Property Management, Paul Weist

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

This project will step through the business analysis process involving the application of e-commerce usage in the management of real estate. Each step of the analysis process is examined to understand and prove that web based property management is a viable approach. First the current process of property management is evaluated. This normally involves an intermediary, the real estate agent. They assist the buyer and seller in the buy/sell transaction. This is of course done for a fee. Usually the fee is calculated based on the selling price. Requirements of both the buyer and seller are defined and analyzed as …

Economics Of Information Security - Developing A Model For Information Security Cost Minimization, Solomon Ogara Dec 2005

Economics Of Information Security - Developing A Model For Information Security Cost Minimization, Solomon Ogara

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

In an increasingly global environment, any organization and or individual who seek to make a positive difference cannot ignore the need for an information strategy that would position them to be winners rather than losers in the market place. Given the growing scarcity of resources, such a strategy has to be carefully planned in such a way that it is cost effective and financially sustainable. The internal security measures should be such that they don't consume the resources of the organization and leave it unable to build a sustainable information security base. On the other hand there is always the …

Human Performance In Agile Production Systems : A Longitudinal Study In System Outcomes, Human Cognition, And Quality Of Work Life., John K. Layer 1963- Dec 2005

Human Performance In Agile Production Systems : A Longitudinal Study In System Outcomes, Human Cognition, And Quality Of Work Life., John K. Layer 1963-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines a research objective associated with human performance in agile production systems, with specific attention towards the hypothesis that system outcomes are the causal result of worker human cognition and quality of work life attributes experienced in an agile production system. The development and adoption of world class agile production systems has been an immediate economic answer to the world-wide competitive call for more efficient, more cost-effective, and more quality laden production processes, but has the human element of these processes been fully understood and optimized? Outstanding current literature suggests that the recent movements toward higher standards in …

A Case Of Transient Diabetes Insipidus Following Cardiopulmonary Bypass, Omer Ashraf, Hasanat Sharif, Mansoor Shah Dec 2005

A Case Of Transient Diabetes Insipidus Following Cardiopulmonary Bypass, Omer Ashraf, Hasanat Sharif, Mansoor Shah

Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Cardiopulmonary bypass surgery has been linked with a number of postoperative complications. One of the frequently reported physiological alterations is the relative diuresis seen in the immediate post-op period. Rarely reported though is the development of full-blown diabetes insipidus in such patients. The etiology is unknown and has only been hypothesized in the past. We present the clinical course of a 54 year old male who developed transient diabetes insipidus post bypass surgery with subsequent recovery following exogenous vasopressin administration. The physiological alteration leading to the development of diabetes insipidus in a small fraction of bypass patients remains unknown. We …

Autism And Parental Marital Satisfaction: The Role Of Adequacy Of Resources, Geneeta Kaliah Chambers Dec 2005

Autism And Parental Marital Satisfaction: The Role Of Adequacy Of Resources, Geneeta Kaliah Chambers

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The goal of the present study was to expand on the existing literature exploring families with children who have developmental disabilities, particularly autism. Previous studies have been constrained by univariate approaches that have failed to adequately capture the nuances of family functioning. Using an ecological/context approach, stemming from an ongoing research program conducted within a university-based treatment center, the present study attempted to improve on the conceptualization of interrelationships among family members and the role that contextual factors play within that dynamic. Specifically, the present study explored the influence of children’s level of autism on parents’ reports of their marital …

Eating Behavior And Obesity Risk Of Youth Living In The City Of San Bernardino, California, Carolyn A. Corder

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Adolescents living in the City of San Bernardino, California, are susceptible to health risks due to high rates of violence, suicide, teen pregnancy, and poverty, which place them among the most vulnerable in the Nation to disability, early death, unhealthy offspring, illiteracy, economic disadvantage, and chronic disease. This study analyzed data from the Youth Risk Behavior (YRBS) and local surveys conducted in the City’s Unified School District from 1999 through 2001. The investigators focused on the relationship, if any, of dietary and anthropometric factors to the priority adolescent behaviors targeted for intervention by the Healthy People 2010 objectives: accidental injuries …
