Family Structure Effects On Parenting Stress And Practices In The African American Family, Daphne S. Cain, Terri Combs-Orme
Family Structure Effects On Parenting Stress And Practices In The African American Family, Daphne S. Cain, Terri Combs-Orme
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The predominant approach to African-American parenting research focuses on disadvantages associated with single parenthood to the exclusion of other issues. The current research suggests that this does not represent the diversity in family structure configurations among African-American families, nor does it give voice to the parenting resilience of single mothers. We argue that rather than marital status or family configuration, more attention needs to be given to the inadequacy of resources for this population.
In the current study, we examined the parenting of infants by African- American mothers and found that mothers' marital status and family configuration did not affect …
For The Children: Accounting For Careers In Child Protective Services, Joan M. Morris
For The Children: Accounting For Careers In Child Protective Services, Joan M. Morris
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper analyzes autobiographical essays from women who work as social service workers in child-protection agencies. Working long hours in relatively low-paying jobs, these women have limited prestige and autonomy and increasingly, come under close scrutiny and public criticism. They are clearly exploited in terms of the emotional and "mothering" labor they are expected to perform and are held personally accountable for daily decisions that could have dire consequences for the children they serve to protect. This paper is an investigation of how their narratives explain and justify their willingness to continue working in these situations and how their professional …
Engendering Citizenship? A Critical Feminist Analysis Of Canadian Welfare-To-Work Policies And The Employment Experiences Of Lone Mothers, Rhonda S. Breitkreuz
Engendering Citizenship? A Critical Feminist Analysis Of Canadian Welfare-To-Work Policies And The Employment Experiences Of Lone Mothers, Rhonda S. Breitkreuz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Like other liberal-welfare states, Canada, in a climate of balanced budgets and deficit reduction, has been active in developing policies intended to move welfare recipients into employment in order to achieve selfsufficiency. The purpose of this paper is to employ a critical feminist analysis to examine the extent to which these policies, developed under the ideological umbrella of neo-liberalism, are gender sensitive. Literature on the economic and non-economic impacts of welfare-to-work policies is reviewed to evaluate whether these initiatives, while mandating lone-mothers into employment, recognize the gendered nature of work, employment and poverty. Gaps in current research are identified and …

New Jersey’S Adult Internet Luring Statute: An Appropriate Next Step?, John W. Lomas Jr.
New Jersey’S Adult Internet Luring Statute: An Appropriate Next Step?, John W. Lomas Jr.
Duke Law & Technology Review
New Jersey recently enacted legislation prohibiting the use of the Internet to lure or entice someone to a location with the purpose of committing a crime with or against that person or some other person. Most states have similar laws pertaining to pedophiles, but this is the first adult Internet luring statute. State measures to regulate the Internet, even in the context of criminal justice, will likely face constitutional challenge since the Internet has become such a critical vehicle for both protected speech and interstate commerce. Furthermore, while the use of the Internet in the commission of crimes against other …
Budget Policy, Deficits, And Defense: A Fiscal Framework For Defense Planning, Dennis S. Ippolito Dr.
Budget Policy, Deficits, And Defense: A Fiscal Framework For Defense Planning, Dennis S. Ippolito Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author focuses on the spending policy, deficit and debt, and retirement and healthcare entitlement dynamics that will make it difficult, if not impossible, to fund current defense plans. Transformational strategies, he concludes, must be adjusted to lower and more volatile future spending levels. The most important adjustment is to shift spending priorities to readiness and traditional modernization needs that are more urgent in terms of capabilities than transformational technologies, as well as more predictable and controllable in terms of costs.
U.S. National Security Implications Of Chinese Involvement In Latin America, R. Evan Ellis Dr.
U.S. National Security Implications Of Chinese Involvement In Latin America, R. Evan Ellis Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Ultimately, this monograph argues that increasing Chinese engagement with Latin America will make the nation both a powerful competitor and a potential partner for the United States in the Western Hemisphere. On one hand, China with major investments in Latin America and dependence on its material flows is likely to be a nation interested in reducing political instability, armed groups, and criminal activity in the region—rather than fueling radical populism and insurgency. On the other hand, the United States needs to consider to what degree it is willing to accept a China that has increasing leverage in its strategic neighborhood …
Epidemiology Of Type I Diabetes Mellitus Among Arab Children, Mohamed A. Abdullah
Epidemiology Of Type I Diabetes Mellitus Among Arab Children, Mohamed A. Abdullah
Saudi Medical Journal
In this article, the epidemiology of type 1 diabetes mellitus among Arab children (<15 years) living in Arab and non-Arab countries is reviewed. These data include the incidence, prevalence and etiopathogenic factors including genetics, environmental factors as well as autoimmune disease markers aside from clinical presentation at onset. The review is based on the information from publications in the international literature identified by searching Medline, other websites as well as personal experience and some communications. The obtained data suggest that the incidence of type 1 diabetes in these countries is increasing similar to the experience in other parts of the world. High incidence has been reported among Arab children who immigrated to some Western countries. The highest incidence is in Qatar and Kuwait and the lowest is in Oman and Jordan. There is considerable variation among countries, which could not be explained on genetic or climatic variations alone. Other environmental factors particularly nutritional ones including high intake of dairy products and vitamin D deficiency are possibly operating. Further, nationwide research from different countries covering the rural as well as urban areas and different ethnic intermixes are needed. To overcome financial and facility problems that hinder research; some cooperation between these countries as well as international bodies are needed.

Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Caring for infants born with lesions that are either incompatible with life or conditions that will not allow meaningful survival is an ethical dilemma. Provision of intensive ineffective care to these infants may be labeled as "futile care" which can consume a major proportion of total hospital expenditure. We conducted the present study to look at the extent of futility in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting. METHODS: All neonates with lesion either incompatible with life or conditions that will not allow meaningful survival admitted during April 2003 to September 2003 in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Royal …

Ruptured Ovarian Cysts And Bilateral Ectopic Pregnancy Complicating A Case Of Severe Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome, Naeema A. Mahmood, Amarjit K. Sandhu
Saudi Medical Journal
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome OHSS, ruptured ovarian cysts and bilateral ectopic pregnancies are all well-recognized entities occurring in association with infertility treatment. We are reporting a case of severe OHSS which was complicated initially by ruptured ovarian cysts and later by bilateral ectopic pregnancy. Diagnosis of tubal pregnancy was obscured by stimulated ovaries, which prevented accurate ultrasound definition. The role of transvaginal ultrasound, serial beta human chorionic gonadotropin and the place of paracentesis in diagnosing these cases are discussed.
