On The Measurement Of Nicotine Dependence In Adolescence: Comparisons Of The Mftq And A Dsm-Iv–Based Scale, Denise Kandel, Christine Schaffran, Pamela Griesler, Jessica Samuolis, Mark Davies, Rosaria Galanti

Psychology Faculty Publications

Objective: To compare nicotine-dependent smokers identified by the modified Fagerström Tolerance Questionnaire (mFTQ) and a scale based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV), in a multiethnic adolescent sample. Methods: A school survey was conducted on 6th- to 10th-grade students (N= 15,007) in a large urban public school system. Results: The two scales formed two distinct factors. The concordance between the two classifications of nicotine dependence was low. The DSM identified a much larger number of nicotine-dependent smokers than the mFTQ, mostly because smokers met dependence criteria at much lower levels of …

Assessing Stakeholder Needs: Delphi Meets The Internet, Chyrel A. Mayfield, Gary J. Wingenbach, David R. Chalmers Jun 2005

Assessing Stakeholder Needs: Delphi Meets The Internet, Chyrel A. Mayfield, Gary J. Wingenbach, David R. Chalmers

Journal of Extension

Turfgrass specialists and Extension educators responsible for developing educational materials in the Master Gardener Program sought stakeholder input for an innovative curriculum by using innovative data collection methods. County agents, program coordinators, and volunteers from 11 Cooperative Extension Service districts responded to a Web-based, Delphi study. Interactive, online data collection methods provided rapid feedback in the consensus-building process. Extension personnel can use this methodology to develop similar consensus-building activities for other programming issues. Stakeholder input can be achieved, with minimum time and expense, while curriculum developers minimize wasted time in programming development that clientele may not find useful.

Caregiving In The Heartland: Outreach Through Adaptation And Collaboration, Paul Jones, William Field

Journal of Extension

Extension programs must often adapt to meet the needs of those they serve. Purdue University's Breaking New Ground (BNG) Resource Center, while focused mainly on the assistive technology needs of agricultural workers with disabilities, realized that the caregivers of these individuals could also benefit from instruction and educational resources. This article describes the development of BNG's caregiver initiative and shares lessons learned from several years of workshop coordination.

The Effects Of Debt On Newlyweds And Implications For Education, Linda M. Skogrand, David G. Schramm, James P. Marshall, Thomas R. Lee

Journal of Extension

The study discussed here examines the relationship between newlywed debt, selected demographic variables, and newlywed levels of marital satisfaction and adjustment. The study used survey data gathered from 1,010 randomly sampled newlywed couples. The findings from this study indicate that entering marriage with consumer debt has a negative impact on newlywed levels of marital quality. Extension educators are in a unique position to provide local high schools, colleges, and the public with information on debt management and its impact on marriage relationships.

A New Interpretation Of The Drug Levodopa In The Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease, Joanne T. Vannah Jun 2005

A New Interpretation Of The Drug Levodopa In The Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease, Joanne T. Vannah

Graduate Masters Theses

An argument for levodopa induced dyskinesias (LID) as an expression of long term potentiation (LTP) in the striatum is presented. Normally, with an intact nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) input, long term depression (LTD) is expressed in the striatum, however, striatal LTD is lost following DA denervation and chronic levodopa treatment. It is possible that these changes in synaptic efficacy are due to two other chemical modulators, achetylcholine (ACh) and glutamate, which in turn leads to the induction of striatal LTP. ACh and glutamate may produce these changes in motor behavior by affecting the striosomal pathway in addition to their effect on …

A Structural Analysis Of Law Enforcement Officer Deaths; 1995-1999, Kasey A. Tucker

Dissertations

Every year several officers die while serving the general public, protecting society from chaos and disorder of crime. Much conjecture surrounds the discussionof why law enforcement officers die in the line of duty and several different studies gave been conducted looking at the different aspects of law enforcement officer death, but limited literature exists exploring law enforcement officer death from a structural perspective.

This study examines in a preliminarily nature, the structural factors that precipitate law enforcement officer deaths between the years of 1995 and 1999 in the United States. In this analysis a theoretical framework reflective of the conflict …

Another One Bites The Dust: Missouri Puts To Rest Uncertainty About Anatomical Gift Immunity, Ryan Deboef

Missouri Law Review

In 1968, the Uniform Law Association ("ULA") adopted the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act ("UAGA"). 2 In seeking to promote anatomical gifts, 3 the UAGA immunizes medical personnel who procure human tissue, organ, and bone. Legislatures in all fifty states have since enacted some form of the UAGA. 4 Many state courts interpreted their respective UAGA immunity provisions long ago.' But, until recently, Missouri courts had not yet had the opportunity to interpret Missouri's UAGA immunity provision. In Schembre v. Mid-America Transplant Ass'n,6 Missouri's Eastern District Court of Appeals addressed Missouri's UAGA immunity provision for the first time.7 This Note explores …

Australia's Damaging International Trade Practice: The Case Against Cruelty To Greyhounds, Alison G. Jones Jun 2005

Australia's Damaging International Trade Practice: The Case Against Cruelty To Greyhounds, Alison G. Jones

Washington International Law Journal

The Australian greyhound racing industry is capitalizing on newly emerging markets in countries such as China and South Korea. The industry's drive to profit from promoting greyhound racing in these countries has put the welfare of greyhounds at risk. By exporting these dogs to China and South Korea, Australia is violating the spirit and general intent of its own animal cruelty laws, which guard against the type of animal abuse that occurs largely unchecked in those countries. Therefore, Australia should put an end to such exports as soon as possible. Under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade ("GATT"), Australia …

Copyrighting American History: International Copyright And The Periodization Of The Nineteenth Century, Claudia Stokes Jun 2005

Copyrighting American History: International Copyright And The Periodization Of The Nineteenth Century, Claudia Stokes

English Faculty Research

With the publication in 1930 of the third and final volume of his Main Currents in American Thought, Vernon Parrington gave singular shape and force to an already established paradigm of the American nineteenth century as two discrete eras, hinged politically and culturally by the Civil War. After 1865, goes the familiar narrative, the Boston Brahmins and their ‘‘love of standards’’ were unseated by itinerant, gritty, self-made writers based in New York. For Parrington, this literary restaging of the American Revolution, in which Old World aristocratic power fell at the hands of an American populism, was best exemplified by …
