Slicing The Pie: A Discussion Of Seminary Book Budget Allocation At Andrews University, Terry Dwain Robertson

Faculty Publications

The allocation of a materials budget is a challenge. This paper discusses a solution for Andrews University that accounts for the more specialized needs of Ph.D. students, even though the materials may see less usage.

High-Throughput Immunoblotting Identifies Biotin-Dependent Signaling Proteins In Hepg2 Hepatocarcinoma Cells1, Rocio Rodriguez-Melendez, Jacob B. Griffin, Gautam Sarath, Janos Zempleni Jun 2005

High-Throughput Immunoblotting Identifies Biotin-Dependent Signaling Proteins In Hepg2 Hepatocarcinoma Cells1, Rocio Rodriguez-Melendez, Jacob B. Griffin, Gautam Sarath, Janos Zempleni

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Biotin affects the abundance of mRNA coding for ~10% of genes expressed in human-derived hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) cells. Here, we determined whether effects of biotin on gene expression are associated with changes in the abundance of distinct proteins in cell signaling and structure. HepG2 cells were cultured in media containing the following concentrations of biotin: 0.025 nmol/L (denoted “deficient”), 0.25 nmol/L (“physiological” = control), and 10 nmol/L (“pharmacological”) for 10 d before harvesting. The abundance of 1009 proteins from whole-cell extracts was quantified by using high-throughput immunoblots. The abundance of 44 proteins changed by at least 25% in biotin-deficient and biotin-supplemented …

Polydesigns And Causal Inference, Fan Li, Constantine E. Frangakis Jun 2005

Polydesigns And Causal Inference, Fan Li, Constantine E. Frangakis

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In an increasingly common class of studies, the goal is to evaluate causal effects of treatments that are only partially controlled by the investigator. In such studies there are two conflicting features: (1) a model on the full cohort design and data can identify the causal effects of interest, but can be sensitive to extreme regions of that design's data, where model specification can have more impact; and (2) models on a reduced design (i.e., a subset of the full data), e.g., conditional likelihood on matched subsets of data, can avoid such sensitivity, but do not generally identify the causal …

Response Shift And Glycemic Control In Children With Diabetes., Julie A Wagner Jun 2005

Response Shift And Glycemic Control In Children With Diabetes., Julie A Wagner

SoM Articles

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the scale recalibration construct of response shift and its relationship to glycemic control in children with diabetes.

METHODS: At year 1, thirty-eight children with type 1 diabetes attending a diabetes summer camp participated. At baseline and post-camp they completed the Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) questionnaire. Post-camp, the PAID was also completed using the 'thentest' method, which requires a retrospective judgment about their baseline functioning. At year 2, fifteen of the original participants reported their HbA1c.

RESULTS: PAID scores significantly decreased from baseline to post-camp. An even larger difference was found …

Computational Optical Biopsy, Yi Li, Ming Jiang, Ge Wang Jun 2005

Computational Optical Biopsy, Yi Li, Ming Jiang, Ge Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Optical molecular imaging is based on fluorescence or bioluminescence, and hindered by photon scattering in the tissue, especially in patient studies. Here we propose a computational optical biopsy (COB) approach to localize and quantify a light source deep inside a subject. In contrast to existing optical biopsy techniques, our scheme is to collect optical signals directly from a region of interest along one or multiple biopsy paths in a subject, and then compute features of an underlying light source distribution. In this paper, we formulate this inverse problem in the framework of diffusion approximation, demonstrate the solution uniqueness properties in …

Genes Encoding Several Poly (Adp-Ribose) Glycohydrolase (Parg) Enzymes, The Proteins And Fragments Thereof, And Antibodies Immnoreactive Therewith, Myron Jacobson, Elaine L. Jacobson, Jean-Christoph Amé, Winston Lin

Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

The isolation and characterization of cDNAs encoding poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG) enzymes and the amino acid sequences of PARGs from several species are described. PARG is involved in the cellular response to DNA damage and its proper function is associated with the body's response to neoplastic disorder inducing agents and oxidative stress. Expression vectors containing the cDNAs and cells transformed with the vectors are described. Probes and primers that hybridize with the cDNAs are described. Expression of the cDNA in E. coli results in an enzymatically active protein of about 111 kDa and an active fragment of about 59 kDa. Methods …

Project Child Health Impact Assessment, Unyi Agba, Kristina Chung, David Diehl, Marisol Olivera, Yolanda Perez

Emerging Leaders Program Team Projects

The 2005 Project Child Health Impact Assessment (CHIA) at the Boston Medical Center (BMC) for the UMass Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is closely related to one that members of the 2004 ELP cohort assisted with. The 2004 project team provided BMC with preliminary research regarding similar concepts in Europe, Canada and the United States. With this research in hand, the Project CHIA team at BMC decided to research, develop, write and publish pilot analyses that illustrated the impact of public policy on children's health. The 2005 ELP team was asked to provide guidance regarding a communications strategy for these pilot …

Grievance by the Union alleging wrongful dismissal of the Grievor, based on allegations of physical abuse of a patient in one of the Employer's health care facilities. The Union has requested pre-hearing production of various documents in the medical file of the patient who made the allegations. The Employer has refused production based mainly on the P.E.I. Mental Health Act, R.S.P.E.I. 1988, c. M-6.1. The parties have agreed that the whether the Employer can and should be ordered to produce the documents in issue is to be decided by the Chair of the Board of Arbitration established to deal with …
