Variation In The Fluorescence Of Green Fluorescent Protein In Various Strains Of Escherichia Coli, Paul R. Letellier Jr. Jul 2005

Variation In The Fluorescence Of Green Fluorescent Protein In Various Strains Of Escherichia Coli, Paul R. Letellier Jr.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Green fluorescent protein (GFP) was first identified in the jellyfish Aequorea victoria and generated interest due to its ability to noninvasively tag and visualize cells, cellular structures, and cellular proteins. Furthermore, the expression of green fluorescent protein in Esherichia coli cells as a tool for reporting gene expression and promotor activity has become important in the understanding of gene regulation. Expression of the gfp gene was found to vary depending on the strain of E. coli possessing the gfp gene. As a result of this fluctuation in fluorescence, gene expression and hence promotor activity may be difficult to detect or …

Tussles Over Gendered Spaces And Assertions Of Female Presence In Anne Le Marquand Hartigan’S Play The Secret Game, Catherine Barron Jul 2005

Tussles Over Gendered Spaces And Assertions Of Female Presence In Anne Le Marquand Hartigan’S Play The Secret Game, Catherine Barron

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper is an extract from the PhD thesis entitled “Self-Imaging/Self-Imagining in the Woman’s Writing (and Painting) of Anne Le Marquand Hartigan”, submitted to University College, Dublin in 2004. The essay discusses Hartigan’s unpublished play, The Secret Game (written in Ireland, circa 1995). In particular, it examines the power-struggling taking place between the sexes in the play over different life spaces, including public / political space, the space of language and the space of the female body. The essay examines how, in order to challenge the spatial disinheritance of women, Hartigan makes use of different strategies to stage statements of …

What Sort Of Mental Health Problems Are Experienced By Women In Contemporary British Society? What Do Different Feminist Perspectives Offer As Alleviation?, Penny Halliday Jul 2005

What Sort Of Mental Health Problems Are Experienced By Women In Contemporary British Society? What Do Different Feminist Perspectives Offer As Alleviation?, Penny Halliday

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay argues that by labelling British women’s mental health distress and treatment in terms of a purely medical model, underlying contributory social structures and phenomena such as gendered roles, ethnicity and poverty, have largely been ignored by the (male dominated) psychiatric profession. This labelling is historically rooted in the pathologisation of the feminine condition; therefore, women’s mental ill health is substantially a social construct and a product of a patriarchal society. To fully explore a way through mental health distress - a term used by MIND to emphasise the inorganic origins of many mental health problems - labels need …

The Silencing Of Women: The Irish Abortion Laws And Religion, Rachael Wright Jul 2005

The Silencing Of Women: The Irish Abortion Laws And Religion, Rachael Wright

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay attempts to look at the unfortunate circumstances that surround women in Ireland in regards to abortion. Rather than looking at the pro- and anti-life arguments which are commonly discussed when approaching abortion issues, I have chosen to concentrate on the legal and ethical matters in Ireland that seem to have control over Irish women’s bodies and consequently their personhood. Through the investigation of the changing Irish laws brought about by the Grogan and X cases, it is possible to understand how religious and patriarchal sentiment has continued to suppress women’s personal choice in regards to abortion. By looking …

Price Controls For Prescription Drugs: Canada Does It, So Can The United States, Joel Lexchin Jul 2005

Price Controls For Prescription Drugs: Canada Does It, So Can The United States, Joel Lexchin

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Drug spending is rising faster than any other component of health care in the United States. Between 1992 and 2002, the growth rate for pharmaceuticals was 7.2% per annum compared to 3.3% for total health spending (1). By 2002, Americans were paying in excess of $162 billion for retail prescription drugs (2). Rising drug prices have accounted for by far the largest proportion of that growth in recent years (2). Prices for patented single source medications in the United States are significantly higher than in any other developed country, no matter who is doing the calculations (3,4). Even taking into …

Treatment Of The Prominent Mandibular Angle By Using A Custom Made Surgical Splint, Luis Eduardo Almeida, Kingsley Wang, Davani Costa, Marco Antonio De Oliveira Filho

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

In this case report, we would like to present an alternative surgical technique for the treatment of the bilateral prominent mandibular angles by using a custom-made resin splint (template). The prefabricated template provided a precise outline for the osteotomy, which alleviated the uncertainty of the osseous cut. Furthermore, masseter muscle myomectomy was not necessary in this case which decreased morbidity, and procedure and recovery time, while assuring a more symmetric outcome.

A Conceptual Framework For Analysis Of System Safety Interoperability Of United States Navy's Combat Systems, Showkat Shanaz Alborzi Jul 2005

A Conceptual Framework For Analysis Of System Safety Interoperability Of United States Navy's Combat Systems, Showkat Shanaz Alborzi

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Today's political and military reality requires the optimal use of our legacy systems. The objective is to maximize the effectiveness of our operations by efficient allocation, placement and the use of our forces and war-fighting systems. The synergism drawn from the capabilities of the legacy complex systems enables today's war-fighting needs to be met without substantial increase in cost or resources. This synergism can be realized by the effective integration and interoperation of legacy systems into a larger, more complex system of systems.

However, the independently developed legacy systems in this new tactical environment often have different data types, languages, …

International Service: History And Forms, Pitfalls And Potential, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Dolly Daftary Jul 2005

International Service: History And Forms, Pitfalls And Potential, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Dolly Daftary

Center for Social Development Research

International voluntary service represents the contribution of one’s time to some cause, which is largely uncompensated and spent in a country other than one’s home country. The forms of international service have evolved from roots in missionary service to a focus on development of the host communities and the volunteers. Current trends emphasize mutuality, accountability, and participation by host communities, but against a historical and contemporary backdrop, inequality remains between the volunteers and hosts. This paper speculates a range of possible positive and negative developmental outcomes, programmatic strategies to mediate negative effects, and research to inform program and policy development.

Age As Asset: The Contribution Of Youth And Retirees To Rural Well-Being, Kathleen K. Miller, Brian Dabson Jul 2005

Age As Asset: The Contribution Of Youth And Retirees To Rural Well-Being, Kathleen K. Miller, Brian Dabson

Center for Social Development Research

The purpose of this paper is to consider the proposition that community wellbeing in rural America can be enhanced by regarding youth and retirees as assets. For both age groups, the literature and public attitudes tend to adopt a less than positive view, emphasizing the problems associated with the out-migration of young people on the one hand and the growing numbers of the elderly on the other. This paper points to trends and thinking which suggest that a different, asset-based lens may be helpful in developing community and policy responses. This paper is one of a series focusing on wealthbuilding …

Asset-Building In Rural Areas, Mark Schreiner Jul 2005

Asset-Building In Rural Areas, Mark Schreiner

Center for Social Development Research

Rural areas have low population densities. On the one hand, this develops social capital and entrepreneurship and permits agriculture. On the other hand, it increases the costs of transactions and providing public services. This makes asset-building more difficult in rural areas. For example, it costs more per capita to provide schools, roads, and hospitals, people are more likely to work in small firms that do not offer access to asset-building institutions such as group health insurance or 401(k) plans, and rural homes are less likely to appreciate in value. From a policy perspective, access to asset-building institutions could be decoupled …

Enhancing The Value Of The Rural Experience Through Improved Connectivity, Brian Dabson Jul 2005

Enhancing The Value Of The Rural Experience Through Improved Connectivity, Brian Dabson

Center for Social Development Research

The purpose of this paper is to examine the proposition that improved connectivity, specifically through the use of broadband telecommunications, may be an important factor in enhancing the value of the “rural experience” and in so doing, improving the economic prospects for rural communities. This paper is one of a series focusing on wealth-building in rural America. The paper begins with a discussion of the current issues and perceived opportunities associated with the introduction and expansion of broadband telecommunications in rural America. It continues with a number of perspectives on the “rural experience” and in particular on those natural assets …
