Photoinduced One-Electron Reduction Of Alkyl Halides By Dirhodium(Ii,Ii) Tetraformamidinates And A Related Complex With Visible Light, Dean Johnston Jul 2005

Photoinduced One-Electron Reduction Of Alkyl Halides By Dirhodium(Ii,Ii) Tetraformamidinates And A Related Complex With Visible Light, Dean Johnston

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

Various substituted dirhodium tetraformamidinate complexes, Rh(2)(R-form)(4) (R = p-CF(3), p-Cl, p-OCH(3), m-OCH(3); form = N,N'-diphenylformamidinate), and the new complex Rh(2)(tpgu)(4) (tpgu = 1,2,3-triphenylguanidinate) have been investigated as potential agents for the photoremediation of saturated halogenated aliphatic compounds, RX (R = alkyl group). The synthesis and characterization of the complexes is reported, and the crystal structure of Rh(2)(tpgu)(4) is presented. The lowest energy transition of the complexes is observed at approximately 870 nm and the complexes react with alkyl chlorides and alkyl bromides under low energy irradiation (lambda(irr) > or = 795 nm), but not when kept in the dark. The metal-containing …

Formative Research For Hygiene Promotion In Kyrgyzstan, Adam Biran, Anara Tabyshalieva, Zumrat Salmorbekova Jul 2005

Formative Research For Hygiene Promotion In Kyrgyzstan, Adam Biran, Anara Tabyshalieva, Zumrat Salmorbekova

History Faculty Research

Formative research for hygiene promotion was used to gather data relating to hygiene practices in rural Kyrgyzstan. Some of the hand-washing and faeces disposal practices observed were sub-optimal from a public health perspective. In combination with the poverty, limited medical services and poor water supply infrastructure characteristic of the study area, it is likely that these factors increase the risk of diarrhoeal infections among Kyrgyz children. An association was found between increased rates of hand-washing following latrine use and ownership of a washstand. This offers some empirical support for the idea that promotion of hand-washing technologies can form a useful …

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant: How Well Is "Accelerated Cleanup" Working?, Don Hancock, Peter Strauss, Gerald Pollett, Beatrice Brailsford, Jeremy Maxand, Southwest Research And Information Center

Southwest Research and Information Center

This report examines the Performance Management Plans (PMPs) of the six transuranic (TRU) waste sites (Rocky Flats Plant, Hanford, Idaho National Lab, Los Alamos National Lab, the Oak Ridge Reservation, and the Savannah River Site) to the PMP of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant's (WIPP) (located in southeastern New Mexico) , to see how the WIPP Plan and the major individual site plans relate.

The report also analyzes how well each site and WIPP are meeting the goals and milestones of the plans, discusses how well projected cost savings are justified, and reviews regulatory and other relevant issues. The analysis …

Differential Stress Responses In Fish From Areas Of High- And Low-Predation Pressure, Culum Brown, Carolyn Gardner, Victoria Braithwaite Jul 2005

Differential Stress Responses In Fish From Areas Of High- And Low-Predation Pressure, Culum Brown, Carolyn Gardner, Victoria Braithwaite

Aquaculture Collection

We subjected fish from regions of high and low levels of predation pressure in four independent streams to a mild stressor and recorded their opercular beat rates. Fish from low-predation areas showed higher maximum, minimum and mean opercular beat frequencies than fish from high-predation regions. The change in opercular beat frequency (scope) was also significantly greater in fish from low- than in fish from high-predation regions. Under normal activity levels, however, low predation fish showed a reduced opercular beat frequency, which may be indicative of reduced activity levels or metabolic rate. Opercular beat frequency was negatively correlated with standard length …

Animal Models Of Head Trauma, Ibolja Cernak Jul 2005

Animal Models Of Head Trauma, Ibolja Cernak

Biomedicine and Animal Models in Research Collection

Animal models of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are used to elucidate primary and secondary sequelae underlying human head injury in an effort to identify potential neuroprotective therapies for developing and adult brains. The choice of experimental model depends upon both the research goal and underlying objectives. The intrinsic ability to study injuryinduced changes in behavior, physiology, metabolism, the blood/tissue interface, the blood brain barrier, and/or inflammatory- and immune-mediated responses, makes in vivo TBI models essential for neurotrauma research. Whereas human TBI is a highly complex multifactorial disorder, animal trauma models tend to replicate only single factors involved in the pathobiology …
