The Viability Of Commercializing Wing-In-Ground (Wig) Craft In Connection With Technical, Economic And Safety Aspects Followed By Imo Legislation, Chin Su Paek

World Maritime University Dissertations

The dissertation is a study of the viability of commercialization of the Wing-In-Ground (WIG) craft, which is a novel type of marine transportation, currently being developed, so not yet commercialized in full scale.

A brief look is taken at present development, and at the historical overview of WIG craft. The main principles and technical issues of WIG craft are examined, taking into account whether there are technical barriers or not. On account of the inherent peculiarities of WIG craft, which possess the characteristics of both aircraft and ship, the legal status of WIG craft is obscure to some extent. The …

Semiparametric Approaches For Joint Modeling Of Longitudinal And Survival Data With Time Varying Coefficients, Xiao Song, C.Y. Wang Dec 2005

Semiparametric Approaches For Joint Modeling Of Longitudinal And Survival Data With Time Varying Coefficients, Xiao Song, C.Y. Wang

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We study joint modeling of survival and longitudinal data. There are two regression models of interest. The primary model is for survival outcomes, which are assumed to follow a time varying coefficient proportional hazards model. The second model is for longitudinal data, which are assumed to follow a random effects model. Based on the trajectory of a subject's longitudinal data, some covariates in the survival model are functions of the unobserved random effects. Estimated random effects are generally different from the unobserved random effects and hence this leads to covariate measurement error. To deal with covariate measurement error, we propose …

Identifikasi Senyawa Antioksidan Dalam Spons Callyspongia Sp Dari Kepulauan Seribu, Endang Hanani

Majalah Ilmu Kefarmasian

Antioxidant activity and identification of antioxidative compounds of Callyspongia sponge from Seribu Island (Kepulauan Seribu) were investigated. The sponge was extracted with acetone and the extract was concentrated using rotary vacuum evaporator. DPPH and tiocyanate methods were used to examine the antioxidant activity of the extract. The extract exhibited strong antioxidant activity in DPPH method with IC50 of 41.21 µg/ml. Chemical analysis indicated that the antioxidative compound in the sponge was alkaloid group.

The self-medication is an effort conducted by the community to cure theirselves using medicine, traditional medicine or others without health proffesional advice. The aims of this study are to know healthy – illness concept, to know local language, symptoms, cause, prevention and curation of headache, fever, cough and common cold, and the self- medication practice on the village community. This study using qualitative design and data was collected by depth interviewing from 12 key informans at Ciwalen village, Warungkondang sub-district, Cianjur district, West Java, in 1998. Key informans are the chief of RT, the chief of RW, the teachers of …

A method by high performance liquid chromatography for the analysis of acrylamide in potato chips, is reported. The retention time for the elution of acrylamide from the C18RP column ranged from 3 to 3,2 minutes, and the eluate was analyzed by UV-VIS detector. A linear response was found for the acrylamide standard tested within the concentration range of 0,8 – 10µg/ml and the corelation coefficient (r) greater than 0,999, with detection limit 0,06 ppm and quantitative limit 0,19 ppm. Sample preparation was performed by means of solvent extraction using dichlormethane and subsequent re-extraction of the organic solvent with water. This …

Sphingosine 1-phosphate is a bioactive sphingolipid that regu- lates cell growth and suppresses programmed cell death. The bio- synthesis of sphingosine 1-phosphate is catalyzed by sphingosine kinase (SK) but the mechanism by which the subcellular localization and activity of SK is regulated in response to various stimuli is not fully understood. To elucidate the origin and structural determi- nant of the specific subcellular localization of SK, we performed biophysical and cell studies of human SK1 (hSK1) and selected mutants. In vitro measurements showed that hSK1 selectively bound phosphatidylserine over other anionic phospholipids and strongly preferred the plasma membrane-mimicking membrane to …

Diagnosis Of Alcoholism Based On Neural Network Analysis Of Phenotypic Risk Factors, Catherine T. Falk Dec 2005

Diagnosis Of Alcoholism Based On Neural Network Analysis Of Phenotypic Risk Factors, Catherine T. Falk

Publications and Research

Background Alcoholism is a serious public health problem. It has both genetic and environmental causes. In an effort to gain understanding of the underlying genetic susceptibility to alcoholism, a long-term study has been undertaken. The Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) provides a rich source of genetic and phenotypic data. One ongoing problem is the difficulty of reliably diagnosing alcoholism, despite many known risk factors and measurements. We have applied a well known pattern-matching method, neural network analysis, to phenotypic data provided to participants in Genetic Analysis Workshop 14 by COGA. The aim is to train the network …

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Errors while genotyping are inevitable and can reduce the power to detect linkage. However, does genotyping error have the same impact on linkage results for single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and microsatellite (MS) marker maps? To evaluate this question we detected genotyping errors that are consistent with Mendelian inheritance using large changes in multipoint identity-by-descent sharing in neighboring markers. Only a small fraction of Mendelian consistent errors were detectable (e.g., 18% of MS and 2.4% of SNP genotyping errors). More SNP genotyping errors are Mendelian consistent compared to MS genotyping errors, so genotyping error may have a greater impact on linkage results …
