A Procedure For Imposing A Dichotomous Incidence Variable On The Weighting Of Items In A Dual Scaling Analysis Of Successive-Categories (Rating) Data, Adam Wyse Aug 2005

A Procedure For Imposing A Dichotomous Incidence Variable On The Weighting Of Items In A Dual Scaling Analysis Of Successive-Categories (Rating) Data, Adam Wyse

Theses

Demographic information collected on surveys is often of certain interest to those who use these surveys to measure customer satisfaction or do market research. This thesis presents a method for imposing a dichotomous incidence variable, possibly a demographic variable, on the weighting of items in a set of successive-categories (rating) data using dual scaling. The idea is to augment the matrix of rating data with the "criterion variable" containing the dichotomous information so that this item determines one of the initial solutions of the dual scaling analysis. In conjunction with the augmentation of the criterion item, the original data are …

Effects Of Resistance Training Volume And Variety On Dietary Intake And Mood State In Untrained Subject, Suzette K. Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: While there is research on the effects of aerobic training on various aspects of mood state and nutrient intake, little is known of the effect of resistance training on these variables.

Purpose: To examine the effects of resistance training (RT) volume and variety on total energy (kcal) and macronutrient intake, and mood states in a healthy, untrained population.

Method:The investigation was part of a prospective experimental study examining the effects of three RT protocols on body composition and strength. An initial 102, healthy, untrained male and female participants, ages 20-40, were recruited, and randomized into one of three …

International Law: A Welfarist Approach, Eric A. Posner Aug 2005

International Law: A Welfarist Approach, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper evaluates international law from a welfarist perspective. Global welfarism requires that international law advance the well being of everyone in the world, and scholars influenced by global welfarism and similar cosmopolitan principles have advocated radical restructuring of international law. But global welfarism is subject to several constraints, including (1) heterogeneity of preferences of the world population, which produces the state system; (2) agency costs, which produce imperfect governments; and (3) the problem of collective action. These constraints place limits on what policies motivated by global welfarism can achieve, and explain some broad features of international law that otherwise …

Groundwater Remediation Technologies For Trichloroethylene And Technetium-99., John Nicholas Uhl 1960- Aug 2005

Groundwater Remediation Technologies For Trichloroethylene And Technetium-99., John Nicholas Uhl 1960-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of the Innovative Treatment Remediation Demonstration Program (ITRD) made technology recommendations after reviewing thirty in situ remediation technologies for implementation at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) to treat groundwater contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) and technetium-99 (Tc-99). The 1999 data used in the ITRD final report were considered to be obsolete as of the year 2004. In this work, cost and performance of the ITRD recommended technologies were updated and compared to newer technologies not in the original review. The technologies were described and case studies were used to evaluate cost and performance with costs …

Optimization Of Interhospital Transfer Of Patients To Reduce Emergency Department Overcrowding., Brandi Marie Hill 1980- Aug 2005

Optimization Of Interhospital Transfer Of Patients To Reduce Emergency Department Overcrowding., Brandi Marie Hill 1980-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research project is to evaluate the feasibility of interhospital patient transfers (within a hospital corporation referred to as NESW Hospital Co.) as a means of reducing emergency department overcrowding. Customer satisfaction is a highly weighted factor in the event of interhospital transferring of patients, as providing quality health care is of the utmost importance to the NESW Hospital Co. Interhospital patient transfers are considered in times of high patient volumes when the referring hospital lacks an available bed to care for those patients whom, via the emergency department, must be admitted to a nursing unit. NESW …

The Effect Of Minimum Wages On The Employment And Earnings Of South Africa's Domestic Service Workers, Tom Hertz Aug 2005

The Effect Of Minimum Wages On The Employment And Earnings Of South Africa's Domestic Service Workers, Tom Hertz

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Minimum wages have been in place for South Africa's one million domestic service workers since November of 2002. Using data from seven waves of the Labour Force Survey, this paper documents that the real wages, average monthly earnings, and total earnings of all employed domestic workers have risen since the regulations came into effect, while hours of work per week and employment have fallen. Each of these outcomes can be linked econometrically to the arrival of the minimum wage regulations. The overall estimated elasticities suggest that the regulations should have reduced poverty somewhat for domestic workers, although this last conclusion …

Temporary Agency Employment As A Way Out Of Poverty?, David H. Autor, Susan N. Houseman Aug 2005

Temporary Agency Employment As A Way Out Of Poverty?, David H. Autor, Susan N. Houseman

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

The high incidence of temporary agency employment among participants in government employment programs has catalyzed debate about whether these jobs help the poor transition into stable employment and out of poverty. We provide direct evidence on this question through analysis of a Michigan welfare-to-work program in which program participants were randomly allocated across service providers ('contractors') with different job placement practices. We draw on a telephone survey of contractors and on administrative program data linked with wage records data on all participants entering the program over a three-and-a half-year period. Our survey evidence documents a consensus among contractors that temporary …

A Comprehensive Comparison Of The Growth-Management Programs Of Oregon And Florida, And The Possible Implications For Tennessee's Growth-Management Programs, Steven Lampkins Aug 2005

A Comprehensive Comparison Of The Growth-Management Programs Of Oregon And Florida, And The Possible Implications For Tennessee's Growth-Management Programs, Steven Lampkins

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The state of Tennessee adopted The Comprehensive Growth plan in 1997 in an effort to coordinate and control growth. The state legislative assembly recognized that coordinated and controlled growth is essential to maintain the quality of life thatTennessee residents expect. The creation of growth-management legislation is a significant step in the right direction; the adoption of a bottom-up management method has seriously compromised the effectiveness of the growth-management program in the state. The state has failed to allocate the necessary funding and has not established an effective incentive program to facilitate compliance with a bottom-up growthmanagement method. The state has also placed …

Demographic Differences Of 4-H Volunteers, Agents, And State Volunteerism Specialists: Implications For Volunteer Administration, Ken Culp Iii, Renee K. Mckee, Patrick Nestor

Journal of Extension

A national study explored the demographic similarities and differences among volunteers, agents, and state specialists in the 4-H Youth Development program. All three groups are primarily married females, in their 40's, who work full-time. Agents were both significantly younger and had volunteered fewer years than either volunteers or state specialists. Volunteers worked with fewer adult and teen volunteers than did agents or specialists. Both 4-H participation and level of education were linear, with state specialists having the highest 4-H membership rate and educational level. Volunteers were more actively involved in volunteering for other organizations besides 4-H than either agents or …

Wonderwise 4-H: Following In The Footsteps Of Women Scientists, Amy N. Spiegel, S Kay Rockwell, Deanna Acklie, Saundra Wever Frerichs

Journal of Extension

Wonderwise 4-H: Women in Science Learning Kits, recently included in the National 4-H Curriculum Collection and widely tested by 4-H leaders, have positively affected youths' perspectives on science, scientists, and scientific work. Adult leaders who used the multi-media, inquiry-based Wonderwise 4-H kits completed a Web survey describing the impact of the kits on youth. It indicated that the kits increased youth's interest and understanding of science, broadened their view of scientists, and opened their eyes to the possibility of science in their own futures. More information about Wonderwise 4-H and downloadable activities are available at .
