Developmental Pathways To Psychopathic Traits In Caucasian And African American Juvenile Offenders, Eva Kimonis Aug 2005

Developmental Pathways To Psychopathic Traits In Caucasian And African American Juvenile Offenders, Eva Kimonis

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

There is a growing body of research suggesting that the presence of psychopathic traits, and more specifically, callous-unemotional traits in youth, may constitute a distinct developmental pathway to aggressive behavior. However, ethnic groups are understudied in this literature such that it is unclear whether the correlates of psychopathic traits (i.e., violence, aggression, emotional processing deficits) are equally associated with these traits across different ethnic groups. Also, most theories on the development of psychopathy have provided biologically-based explanations for the cognitive-affective deficits that are considered to be core features of psychopathy. However, research suggests that exposure to adverse contextual environments is …

Counselor Trainees' Perceptions Of Preparedness For Practicum Supervision, Jannette Sturm-Mexic Aug 2005

Counselor Trainees' Perceptions Of Preparedness For Practicum Supervision, Jannette Sturm-Mexic

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory research study investigated perceptions of practicum counselor trainees to help understand how prepared they believed they were for supervision. Based upon common elements of various developmental models of supervision, this study examined counselor trainees’ perceptions of their preparedness for practicum supervision based upon: (a) expectations of supervision; (b) understanding of the structure and formats used in supervision; (c) receptivity to and use of feedback in supervision; and (d) the evaluative component of supervision. This study also investigated possible explanations as to what factors may lead counselor trainees to feel more or less prepared for practicum supervision. The participants …

Behavioral Aspects Of Retirement Savings: How Do 401(K) Plans Affect Household Asset Accumulation?, John Topoleski Aug 2005

Behavioral Aspects Of Retirement Savings: How Do 401(K) Plans Affect Household Asset Accumulation?, John Topoleski

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The nature of employee retirement plans has changed dramatically over the past fifteen years as employers have been replacing traditional defined benefit retirement plans with defined contribution plans like the 401(k) plan. This dissertation is focused on the impact that 401(k) plan have on household asset accumulation. The first essay looks at how much asset accumulation can be attributed to 401(k) plans as opposed to other factors such as demographics and saver type characteristics. Overall, the conclusions are consistent with recent research that says these plans induce a reshuffling of assets rather than being funded through a reduction in consumption. …

Multiple Payload Ejector For Education, Science And Technology Payloads, Gary Letchworth Aug 2005

Multiple Payload Ejector For Education, Science And Technology Payloads, Gary Letchworth

Small Satellite Conference

The education and small research payloads community no longer has a means of being regularly manifested onto Hitchhiker and Gas carriers on Space Shuttle flights. Therefore, many small payloads do not have a launch opportunity, or await flights as secondary payloads on ELV missions, as the ELV primary payload manifest, secondary payload volume and mass allows. This has resulted in a backlog of small payloads, and an inability for the small payloads community to achieve routine access to orbit. This paper overviews the NASA-Goddard Wallops Flight Facility effort, funded by SOMD’s KSC Launch Services Program, to leverage its competencies in …

Review Of A Small Satellite Hyper-Spectral Mission, Mike Cutter

Small Satellite Conference

This paper describes a low cost hyper-spectral mission based around the CHRIS instrument that has been developed at Sira Technology Ltd. The CHRIS instrument is flying on the ESA PROBA platform, a small agile satellite of the 100kg class, which was launch in October 2001. The instrument typically acquires more than 300 hyper-spectral images each year via two European ground stations. Today this instrument provides the highest sampling capability of any space-borne hyper-spectral instrument. The main purpose of the instrument is to provide images of land areas, although the applications have extended to include coastal monitoring. The platform provides pointing …

Internet Protocol (Ip) As A Standard For Command And Control Of Satellites , Jeff Janicik, Jay Heberle

Small Satellite Conference

Internet Protocol (IP) is gaining more and more attention as a means for achieving “net-centric” operations for satellite programs. The reason for this is the fact that the computer and Internet industries have defined and continue to improve a global network that the government, commercial, and private sectors rely on everyday for their business infrastructure and operations. It only makes sense to strive for an efficient means of integrating our routine and secure operations of satellites into this network. There is evidence of moving toward this strategy within NASA’s Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) and the DoD’s Transformational …

A Plug-And-Play System For Spacecraft Components Based On The Usb Standard, Jim Lyke, Scott Cannon, Don Fronterhouse, Denise Lanza, Tony Byers

Small Satellite Conference

Plug and Play spacecraft offer the potential of simplified software development, rapid assembly and integration, latepoint addition of new components and technologies, along with more automatic testing and afterdeployment flexibility. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has established a program to develop standards for Space Plug and play Avionics (SPA) that is based around commercial technologies. In particular, "SPA-U" is based on the popular USB standard. This paper develops the basic concepts of the SPA-U standard, to include the host and client side software and hardware.

Disasters: Photovoltaics For Special Needs, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The National Hurricane Center tracks the path of a hurricane to determine where it will make landfall. People in harm's way are informed of its approach and the need to evaluate options to prevent injury and protect lives. One of the many groups of people at high risk is those with special needs. They have health conditions that require special care. Before a disaster, these individuals live in hospitals, care facilities and homes. During and following a disaster, many would be moved, along with their supplies, equipment and a caretaker, to a special needs shelter. Others would stay with relatives …

Renewable Energy And Disaster-Resistant Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young Aug 2005

Renewable Energy And Disaster-Resistant Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Hurricanes, floods, tornados and earthquakes create natural disasters that can destroy homes, businesses and the natural environment. Such disasters can happen with little or no warning, leaving hundreds or even thousands of people without medical services, potable water, sanitation, communications and electrical services for up to several weeks. The 2004 hurricane season ravaged the State of Florida, U.S.A., with four major hurricanes within a 6-week timeframe. Over nine million people evacuated their homes and damage to property was extensive.

One proactive strategy to minimize this type of destruction and disruption to lives is the implementation of disaster-resistant buildings that are …

A Pilot Study: The Effects Of Group Exercise On Fatigue And Quality Of Life During Cancer Treatment, Joanna M. Losito Aug 2005

A Pilot Study: The Effects Of Group Exercise On Fatigue And Quality Of Life During Cancer Treatment, Joanna M. Losito

Master's Projects

Fatigue affects 60-100% of all cancer patients, is difficult to manage, and can have a profound impact on everyday functioning and quality of life. Though seemingly counterintuitive, exercise has emerged as a promising intervention for the management of cancer related fatigue (CRF). Current research predominantly involves individual, home-based exercise programs with few studies exploring other modes of exercise delivery. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if participation in a structured group exercise program (SGEP) was a feasible intervention for adult oncology patients receiving cancer treatment and to test the impact of a SGEP on reducing CRF and …

Brain Neprilysin Activity And Susceptibility To Transgene-Induced Alzheimer Amyloids, Troy L. Carter, Steve Pedrini, Jorge Ghiso, Michelle E. Ehrlich, Sam Gandy Aug 2005

Brain Neprilysin Activity And Susceptibility To Transgene-Induced Alzheimer Amyloids, Troy L. Carter, Steve Pedrini, Jorge Ghiso, Michelle E. Ehrlich, Sam Gandy

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Neprilysin (NEP) is a zinc metalloproteinase that degrades enkephalins, endothelins, and the Alzheimer’s disease amyloid ß (Aß) peptides. NEP-deficient mice possess increased levels of brain Aß1-40 and Aß1-42. The objective of this study was to determine whether tissue NEP specific activity differs according to age and/or across mouse strains, especially those strains predisposed toward formation of Aß-amyloid plaques following overexpression of the human Alzheimer amyloid precursor protein (APP). The C57Bl/6J mouse strain appears to be relatively susceptible to cerebral amyloidosis, whereas the Swiss Webster (SW) strain appears more resistant. We investigated whether NEP specific activity in brain …
