Seeking Life Balance: The Perceptions Of Health Of Cambodian Women In Resettlement, Olivia Catolico Phd, Msn
Seeking Life Balance: The Perceptions Of Health Of Cambodian Women In Resettlement, Olivia Catolico Phd, Msn
Dissertations
This grounded theory study was an inquiry into the perceptions of health of Cambodian women in resettlement and the conditions that influenced their perceptions. Few studies of Cambodian women who escaped political conflict exist. Cambodian women were among the waves of Southeast Asian refugees who have resettled in the United States. The sequelae of significant life trauma upon the health of Cambodian women in resettlement have received little attention in the nursing literature. There is less information about their perceptions of health in resettlement as their beliefs about health and illness causation contrast with those of Western health care providers. …
Comment: A Selective Overview Of Nonparametric Methods In Financial Econometrics, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu
Comment: A Selective Overview Of Nonparametric Methods In Financial Econometrics, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
These comments concentrate on two issues arising from Fan’s overview. The first concerns the importance of finite sample estimation bias relative to the specification and discretization biases that are emphasized in Fan’s discussion. Past research and simulations given here both reveal that finite sample effects can be more important than the other two effects when judged from either statistical or economic viewpoints. Second, we draw attention to a very different nonparametric technique that is based on computing an empirical version of the quadratic variation process. This technique is not mentioned by Fan but has many advantages and has accordingly attracted …
Analysis Of Job-Training Effects On Korean Women, Myoung-Jae Lee, S. J. Lee
Analysis Of Job-Training Effects On Korean Women, Myoung-Jae Lee, S. J. Lee
Research Collection School Of Economics
We analyse job-training effects on Korean women for the period January 1999 to March 2000, using a large data set of size about 52,000. We employ a number of estimation techniques: Weibull MLE and accelerated failure time approach, which are both parametric; Cox partial likelihood estimator, which is semiparametric; and two pair-matching estimators, which are in essence nonparametric. All of these methods gave the common conclusion that job training for Korean women increased their unemployment duration. The trainings were not cost-effective in the sense that they took too much time 'locking in' the trainees during the training span, compared with …
Simultaneous Equations In Ordered Discrete Responses With Regressor-Dependent Thresholds, Myoung-Jae Lee, A. Kimhi
Simultaneous Equations In Ordered Discrete Responses With Regressor-Dependent Thresholds, Myoung-Jae Lee, A. Kimhi
Research Collection School Of Economics
The parameters of ordered discrete response (ODR) models are identified only up to a positive scale. In this paper, we examine the identification issue for simultaneous equations with ODR, where the well-known identification problem in simultaneous equations of recovering structural-form parameters from reduced-form parameters is compounded with the ODR identification problem. We allow the thresholds in ODR to be regressor dependent as well as constant; the former is particularly challenging because threshold parameters get mixed with regression parameters, adding one more dimension to the identification problem. We also explore a cross-equation restriction on threshold differences, under which the structural form …

An important role of education – and the resultant accumulation of human capital – for a less-developed economy is to facilitate technology diffusion in order for it to catch up with developed economies. This paper presents a model linking education, the accumulation of physical capital and technological progress. In the model, investment in education and the accumulation of physical capital are complementary, and intertwine with the technology progress through related effects on technology diffusion and the expansion of the technology frontier. The allocation of effort to education, the optimal savings rate and the technology gap are endogenously determined in the …

A Brief History Of Bioperl, Colin Crossman, Arti K. Rai
A Brief History Of Bioperl, Colin Crossman, Arti K. Rai
Faculty Scholarship
Large-scale open-source projects face a litany of pitfalls and difficulties. Problems of contribution quality, credit for contributions, project coordination, funding, and mission-creep are ever-present. Of these, long-term funding and project coordination can interact to form a particularly difficult problem for open-source projects in an academic environment.
BioPerl was chosen as an example of a successful academic open-source project. Several of the roadblocks and hurdles encountered and overcome in the development of BioPerl are examined through the telling of the history of the project. Along the way, key points of open-source law are explained, such as license choice and copyright.

The Battle Of New Orleans, Gregory Morris Thomas
The Battle Of New Orleans, Gregory Morris Thomas
LSU Master's Theses
America was not prepared for the War of 1812. The army and navy were so small they could not oppose Britain directly. American strategy in the first year called for the seizure of Canada. Multiple expeditions were complete failures resulting in military defeats and political embarrassment for President Madison. During the second year of the war there were more defeats for American forces, but some victories. These successes came mainly against Indians allied with the British along the frontier. The third and final year of the war started ominously. With Napoleons first abdication the wars in Europe seemed over, allowing …

Fibromyalgia And Bladder Irritability, Carolyn K. Brand
Fibromyalgia And Bladder Irritability, Carolyn K. Brand
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Urinary tract sensory symptoms provide an additional symptomatic burden for women with fibromyalgia. The urogenital symptoms of both fibromyalgia and interstitial cystitis have been described as non-infective sensory disorders, suggesting the existence of substantial clinical overlap between the two conditions. Research suggests that although interstitial cystitis has been treated as a specific bladder condition, it may be part of the disorder of central processing of sensory information as seen in fibromyalgia.
The interstitial cystitis symptom index and problem index (ICSI/ICPI) have been used to measure lower urinary tract symptoms and to examine the impact of these symptoms in patients with …

Communicating Effectively Across The Cultural Barrier : A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Sydney And Atlanta Hotel Industries, Danielle Lacey
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study aimed to look at the importance of cultural awareness across the hospitality industry as a whole and the industry's response to this issue. The research set out three hypotheses based on one main research question. The research question postulated was: What guest services are Sydney and Atlanta hoteliers providing to meet the needs of guests from different cultural backgrounds? The research was carried out using a descriptive qualitative research design, additionally a cross-sectional time frame was used. The research was conducted within the hotel population in Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America, and in Sydney, New South Wales. …
Responding To Localised Prostate Cancer : Lifeworld Reconstruction During The First Post-Diagnostic Year, David P. Wall
Responding To Localised Prostate Cancer : Lifeworld Reconstruction During The First Post-Diagnostic Year, David P. Wall
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis investigated the experiences of men diagnosed with localised prostate cancer, as they reconstructed their lifeworlds during the first post-diagnostic year. With the exception of health related quality of life, a review of the psychosocial research literature revealed few studies that, explored the psychosocial experience of men diagnosed with localised prostate cancer. Furthermore, the review uncovered no studies that explored the process of Iifeworld reconstruction, and only three studies that considered the role of masculinity in the responses of men to the prostate cancer experience. Such a limited understanding, about the nature and process of lifeworld reconstruction, potentially compromises …
Towards The Light : A Fictionalized (Auto) Biography, John Cailes
Towards The Light : A Fictionalized (Auto) Biography, John Cailes
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Towards the Light - - at times biographical, autobiographical, and basically fiction - is built out of anecdotes supplied to me as the result of direct questioning of my parents and relatives, and from my own memories of past experiences; from private 'on the ground' observations both in Western Australia and in Cornwall, England – and, where factual information is lacking, a good deal of creative invention on my part. My paternal great-grandfather who at the age of eight began his working life in a Cornish tin mine provided me with a figure central to my purpose while constructing this …

Environmental Impacts Of Technological Change In Bangladesh Agriculture: Farmers' Perceptions, Determinants, And Effects On Resource Allocation Decisions, S Rahman
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This article measures the impact of modern technology adoption in raising farmers' environmental awareness and the impact of farmers' environmental awareness on resource use by utilizing survey data from 21 villages in three agro‐ecological regions of Bangladesh. The econometric analysis is based on the application of the Tobit model explaining farmers' environmental awareness in the first stage and a profit function examining environmental awareness and resource use relationships in the second stage. Results reveal that the “level” and “duration” of involvement with modern technology raises farmers' environmental awareness, and that farmers' environmental awareness reduces resource use including chemicals. Farmers, who …

Geography, Citizenship And Volunteering: Some Uses Of The Higher Education Active Community Fund In Geography, Richard Yarwood
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Voluntary work with local communities has been advocated as beneficial for geography students, higher education institutions and the public. In England, the Higher Education Active Community Fund (HEACF) has recently been established by the Government to encourage staff and students in higher education to undertake voluntary work in local communities. This paper reports on the use of HEACF funding to develop voluntary work projects for geography students at the University of Plymouth. It examines the student experience of voluntary working and concludes that it helps students to develop as both geographers and active citizens in their local communities.

The Aesthetics Of The Road, Road Art, And Road Traffic, Yrjš Sepänmaa
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Three things are required for a good road: economy, safety and beauty. A key concept of this trinity is fitting: how to fit the road into the landscape. Together, the road and the landscape form a work of road art. Art attached to the road environment - in this case the other meaning of road art - is at its simplest art works placed beside a road. Art in a more demanding form gives the landscape new dimensions of meaning. Road and art in unison are more than the sum of their parts. Furthermore, travelling is a way to get …

Predicting Adherence In Injury Rehabilitation: Utility Of A Screening Tool And Physical Therapists' Predictions., Emma Jayne Grindley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to explore protection motivation theory's (PMT) utility in guiding research in a general orthopedic rehabilitation facility. Further questions were whether a screening incorporating the Sports Injury Rehabilitation Beliefs Scale (SIRBS), Positive and Negative Affect Scales (PANAS), and a barriers checklist, and/or physical therapists' (PTs') perceptions were valid measures that could predict patients' adherence behavior. Adherence behavior was measured using the Sports Injury Rehabilitation Adherence Scale (SIRAS) and attendance behavior groupings which were classified as drop out/no drop out, no show/non no show, and cancellation/no cancellation. This study was conducted in a community sports medicine …
The Effects Of Explanatory Style On Bowling Performance., Paula M. Parker
The Effects Of Explanatory Style On Bowling Performance., Paula M. Parker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As positive psychology gains more attention in psychology, sport psychology consultants will likely increase the study of this branch of psychological research. Foster, Hinkelman, and Watson (2003) suggested that an area of importance for sport psychology researchers is the development of a program to teach athletes how to be more optimistic in their explanatory style (ES). Some sport related research has shown that an optimistic explanatory style better equips individuals to bounce back from failure (e.g., Martin-Krumm et al.; Seligman et al., 1990), while other research has shown that a pessimistic style may be more beneficial to sport performance (e.g., …

A review of the literature indicates there is a need for alternative assessment practices for elementary students. Seven fourth grade students in a small rural school will learn how to construct an electronic portfolio that will exhibit their progress and achievement. The contents of the portfolio must include student participation in the selection as well as provide evidence of self-reflection. This study researches a computer-based portfolio, which uses HyperStudio software. This program will allow students to create sound, video, graphics, and animation during the construction process. As students build their multimedia portfolios, they will learn how to use technology as …
The Crucial Role Of Coaching In Servant-Leader Development, Paul Nakai
The Crucial Role Of Coaching In Servant-Leader Development, Paul Nakai
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Servant-leadership is a way of life that brings with it refreshing simplicity to the seemingly complex, multi-layered nuances of relationship, and, centrally, a call toward the deepest regard for human dignity. The validity of a servant-led perspective is shown in one of the great and persevering dynamics of human nature: the ultimate truth demonstrated in humbling oneself in order to serve the most significant needs of another person. This idea, of the servant who leads, is as compelling today as it has been throughout history. Notably, in order to develop servant-leadership in the life of an organization, simplicity, not complexity, …

Many project managers may be fully aware of the safety risks within their organizations. What they may not know, however, is that many of these risks are caused by the underlying safety culture of the organization rather than human individual differences in the organization. This article argues that managers can mitigate safety risks by obtaining a better understanding of their organizations’ culture. The researchers created a management metric that enables engineering/project managers to identify positive and negative aspects of safety that are tied to their organizations’ cultures. The article presents a process that managers can use to increase safety and …
