Evaluation Of Helicobacter Hepaticus Bacterial Shedding In Fostered And Strategically Housed C57bl/6 Mice, J. Robin Crisler Roberts Jan 2005

Evaluation Of Helicobacter Hepaticus Bacterial Shedding In Fostered And Strategically Housed C57bl/6 Mice, J. Robin Crisler Roberts

LSU Master's Theses

The murine pathogen Helicobacter hepaticus has important confounding effects on research. Neonatal fostering has been studied in our laboratory for elimination of infection in mice. The purpose of our study was to examine fostering of pups from experimentally infected dams in male-absent parturition, and to determine the significance of gender and time on quantity of bacterial colonization in the cecum and feces of C57BL/6 mice. Approximately 20 C57BL/6 mice were fostered per day from one to four days of age. None of the C57BL/6 pups tested positive by PCR in fecal or cecal samples through four days of age. This …

There is always a danger in being overly focused on a task. When this happens, we can fail to see other tasks or parallel tasks that are equally demanding. This paper focuses on some other “windows,” beyond the “10/40 Window,” that also call for serious attention, concerted prayer, specialized training, their own unique strategies, and a variety of personnel/gifts.

Synthesis Of Poly(Dl-Lactide-Co-Glycolide) Nanoparticles With Entrapped Magnetite, Carlos Ernesto Astete R.

LSU Master's Theses

The goal of the research was to synthesize magnetic polymeric nanoparticles (MPNPs) under 100 nm in diameter, for future drug delivery applications. The thesis is divided into two main sections. In the first section, a quantitative, and comprehensive description of the top-down synthesis techniques available for poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) and magnetic polymeric nanoparticles (MPNPs) formation is provided, as well as the techniques commonly used for nanoparticle characterization. In the second part, a novel way to form MPNPs is presented. The emulsion evaporation method was selected as the method of choice to form poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles with entrapped magnetite (Fe3O …

The Bridge

On February 17, 1892, a young man of twenty-five boarded the transatlantic steamer Hekla in the port of Copenhagen to emigrate to the United States of America as had many Danes before him. When he took the decision to emigrate we do not know; but that he was determined to leave is certain. His father died shortly before the departure date and the burial coincided with the sailing date. Why did he leave his home? What happened to him?

On January 1, 1963 The American Evangelical Lutheran Church ceased to exist as a separate entity. The AELC was the new name that had been assumed by the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1954. Therefore, what really came to an end in 1963 was the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, which hereinafter shall be referred to simply as the Danish Church.

The Cups Of Blood Are Emptied: Pietism And Cultural Heritage In Two Danish Immigrant Schools On The Great Plains, John Mark Nielsen Jan 2005

The Cups Of Blood Are Emptied: Pietism And Cultural Heritage In Two Danish Immigrant Schools On The Great Plains, John Mark Nielsen

The Bridge

Following the American Civil War, the vast sweep of the Great Plains exerted a powerful force on the imagination of Americans and Northern European immigrants, resulting in a period of rapid settlement. Within immigrant communities, in particular, attempts were made to establish institutions where the language, beliefs and cultural heritage of a people might be preserved. The history of these immigrant institutions mirror the challenges immigrant communities faced in confronting not only the vicissitudes of climate and evolving economic conditions but also the pressures of assimilation.

The Bridge

Written in the 1930s, Petersen, in his memoirs, tells the story of his life beginning with his childhood in Denmark in the 1860s and concludes in the 1890s when he married and became a settled citizen in Dannebrog, Nebraska. He is best known for his decade-long service as postmaster in Dannebrog and publisher of the Dannebrog News. But instead of telling about his career as postmaster and publisher, he relates, in great detail, events from his youth, his various jobs, his travels from place to place as his work directed him, and incidents that he witnessed. Nevertheless, his story is …

Health, Wealth And Workforce Exit: Disability Insurance And Individual Accounts, Jason S. Seligman Jan 2005

Health, Wealth And Workforce Exit: Disability Insurance And Individual Accounts, Jason S. Seligman

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Current debate on the Social Security Administrations long-term finance of benefits includes proposals for independent private investment via individual accounts. The author first investigates what implications disability might have for equity savings account balances. In light of results, incentives to exit the workforce ahead of retirement age are considered when a defined benefit program for disability insurance continues to be available. Included simulation uses historic wage series, equity market performance, and current OASDI regulations for cohorts retiring over the period of 1929 - 2003.

Should Attorneys Have A Duty To Report Financial Abuse Of The Elderly?, Carolyn L. Dessin Jan 2005

Should Attorneys Have A Duty To Report Financial Abuse Of The Elderly?, Carolyn L. Dessin

Akron Law Faculty Publications

Exploitation of older persons is a growing problem in America. As a result, our legal and social systems are struggling to develop structures that will prevent, remedy and punish instances of abuse. From all indications, financial abuse is becoming increasingly common, and can be devastating to its victim.

States have enacted a wide variety of statutes aimed at alleviating financial abuse. There are two relevant bodies of law: a state's protective services law and the state's criminal law. Although one may normally think of the purpose of the criminal law as deterring and punishing crimes, and the protective services law …

The Intention Of The Settlor Under The Uniform Trust Code: Whose Property Is It, Anyway?, Alan Newman Jan 2005

The Intention Of The Settlor Under The Uniform Trust Code: Whose Property Is It, Anyway?, Alan Newman

Akron Law Faculty Publications

The Intention of the Settlor Under the Uniform Trust Code: Whose Property Is It, Anyway?

The question of the extent to which the owner of property may transfer it gratuitously, subject to enforceable restrictions on alienability and use, has a long history. To protect the living from control by the dead, as well as the alienability of property, the law traditionally has refused to enforce some such restrictions. Opposing those interests, however, is the interest in respecting the freedom of the owner of property to dispose of it subject to whatever restrictions he or she chooses to impose.

The Uniform …

Analysis And Insights From A Dynamical Model Of Nuclear Plant Safety Risk, Stephen Hess, Alfonso M. Albano, John Gaertner Jan 2005

Analysis And Insights From A Dynamical Model Of Nuclear Plant Safety Risk, Stephen Hess, Alfonso M. Albano, John Gaertner

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we expand upon previously reported results of a dynamical systems model for the impact of plant processes and programmatic performance on nuclear plant safety risk. We utilize both analytical techniques and numerical simulations typical of the analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems to obtain insights important for effective risk management. This includes use of bifurcation diagrams to show that period doubling bifurcations and regions of chaotic dynamics can occur. We also investigate the impact of risk mitigating functions (equipment reliability and loss prevention) on plant safety risk and demonstrate that these functions are capable of improving risk to …

Temporal Perspectives: Resolving The Conflict Between Current And Future Investors, Steven L. Schwarcz Jan 2005

Temporal Perspectives: Resolving The Conflict Between Current And Future Investors, Steven L. Schwarcz

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the temporal conflict between current and future investors. Although disclosure can reduce the information asymmetry between a firm and investors in the firm's securities, disclosure itself involves probabilities and difficult judgment choices and often is ambiguous. If a risk is possible though unlikely, should management disclose it? If the risk should be disclosed, how prominently should it be disclosed? These questions highlight the temporal conflict: disclosure of a possible risk harms a firm's current investors, and the more prominent the disclosure, the greater their harm; but failure to disclose the risk, or to give sufficient prominence to …

Does Parental Autonomy Require Equal Custody At Divorce?, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 2005

Does Parental Autonomy Require Equal Custody At Divorce?, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

This paper considers the affect of amendments to state divorce laws that strengthen their joint custody preference. It does so in the context of suits by noncustodial parents challenging substantive custody standards not requiring equal custody at divorce. The complaint is that most custody laws, by using a best interests standard rather than equally dividing custodial time, violate substantive due process. Further, two states, Iowa and Maine, have recently amended their custody legislation to strongly presume joint physical custody.

After setting out the constitutional problem and describing the legislation in some detail, this paper tests the effects of the change …
