The Importance Of Retrieval Failures To Long-Term Retention: A Metacognitive Explanation Of The Spacing Effect, Harry P. Bahrick, Lynda K. Hall Jan 2005

The Importance Of Retrieval Failures To Long-Term Retention: A Metacognitive Explanation Of The Spacing Effect, Harry P. Bahrick, Lynda K. Hall

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Encoding strategies vary in their duration of effectiveness, and individuals can best identify and modify strategies that yield effects of short duration on the basis of retrieval failures. Multiple study sessions with long inter-session intervals are better than massed training at providing discriminative feedback that identifies encoding strategies of short duration. We report two investigations in which long intervals between study sessions yield substantial benefits to long-term retention, at a cost of only moderately longer individual study sessions. When individuals monitor and control encoding over an extended period, targets yielding the largest number of retrieval failures contribute substantially to the …

An Acoustic Fluid-Structure Simulation Of A Theraputic Ultrasound Wire Waveguide Apparatus, Graham Gavin, M.S. Hashmi, Finbar Dolan, Garrett Mcguinness Jan 2005

An Acoustic Fluid-Structure Simulation Of A Theraputic Ultrasound Wire Waveguide Apparatus, Graham Gavin, M.S. Hashmi, Finbar Dolan, Garrett Mcguinness

Conference Papers

The use of high-power low-frequency ultrasound transmitted down small diameter wire waveguides is an emerging technology that may have potential in the treatment of complicated atherosclerotic plaques in cardiovascular surgery. This form of energy delivery results in vibrating the distal-tip of the wire waveguide disrupting material by means of direct contact ablation and also cavitation, pressure waves and acoustic streaming in the surrounding fluid. This work describes a numerical acoustic fluid-structure model of the ultrasound wire waveguide and blood surrounding the distal tip. The structural analysis of the model predicts the natural frequencies of the waveguide and shows the extent …

A Time To Preserve: A Call For Formal Private-Party Rights In Perpetual Conservation Easements, Carol N. Brown Jan 2005

A Time To Preserve: A Call For Formal Private-Party Rights In Perpetual Conservation Easements, Carol N. Brown

Georgia Law Review

Increasingly, property owners are employing conservation easements to maintain open space or protect the environment through restrictions on development. Private-party standing to enforce conservation easements, however, has not been so widely embraced, in part because of the perceived inconsistency between private-party standing and private property rights. This Article argues that private-party standing to sue for enforcement of these easements reinforces both the easement grantor's private property rights and society's interest in natural resource preservation. The Article analyzes private-party standing under a reconstituted bundle of property rights theory and the public trust doctrine; examines the efficiency, social justice, and decentralization arguments …

Advertising 'The New Woman': Fashion, Beauty, And Health In Women's World, Pelin Basci Jan 2005

Advertising 'The New Woman': Fashion, Beauty, And Health In Women's World, Pelin Basci

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study aims to re-examine Women's World, (a Middle Eastern women's publication that was active between 1913 and 1921), from a gender aware, but broadly constructed, interdisciplinary perspective that integrates women's studies with studies of advertising and consumption. A feminist journal with a relatively long publication life, Women's World contained a substantial number of advertisements encouraging the consumption of modem goods and services. Many of these notices promised to address the beauty, health and fashion needs of modem women, thus constructing in effect the public image of "the new woman." of that image, in turn, should facilitate our understanding of …

Obesity And The Struggle Within Ourselves, Maxwell Gregg Bloche Jan 2005

Obesity And The Struggle Within Ourselves, Maxwell Gregg Bloche

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The author argues that we ought to treat our eating, exercise habits, and girth as personal matters, for the most part, but that law can and should make a contribution, as an ally of our longer-term will against our immediate cravings. Law can be our ally in this fashion without command-and-control intrusion into our private lives. Such intrusion is at odds with our core beliefs and unlikely to produce public health success. It is more likely to provoke popular backlash--one reason why some who stand to gain from our unhealthy dining choices try to cast government efforts to inform these …

Intellectual Property Rights And Stem Cell Research: Who Owns The Medical Breakthroughs?, Sean M. O'Connor

Articles

This article will not address the science and ethics of stem cell research—at least as far as those topics are normally addressed in the existing literature. Instead, this article argues that an even more contentious battle is looming on the horizon, with dire practical consequences: Namely, who will own the revolutionary medical breakthroughs that are supposed to emerge from this research? Along the way, this article will assume that stem cell research will progress in some fashion and that at least some of the purported benefits will materialize.

But the central premise is that the pitch of the ownership battle …

Corporate Prophet: An Introduction To Susan Stabile's A Catholic Vision Of The Corporation, Kellye Y. Testy

Articles

Public trust in business has waned as large-scale failures of corporate accountability and governance have rocked domestic and international marketplaces in the past several years. Efforts to bolster trust and improve corporate governance have received substantial public attention and have stemmed from many sources, including new regulatory initiatives and enhanced attention to governance by both public and private corporations in an attempt to stave off further regulation. At the same time, corporate law scholars have seized upon this milieu in order to reinvigorate scholarly debates about the roles and purposes of corporations in society.

Professor Susan Stabile, a scholar of …

Malaria Infection Increases Attractiveness Of Humans To Mosquitoes, Renaud Lacroix, Wolfgang R. Mukabana, Louis Clement Gouagna, Jacob C. Koella Jan 2005

Malaria Infection Increases Attractiveness Of Humans To Mosquitoes, Renaud Lacroix, Wolfgang R. Mukabana, Louis Clement Gouagna, Jacob C. Koella

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Do malaria parasites enhance the attractiveness of humans to the parasite's vector? As such manipulation would have important implications for the epidemiology of the disease, the question has been debated for many years. To investigate the issue in a semi-natural situation, we assayed the attractiveness of 12 groups of three western Kenyan children to the main African malaria vector, the mosquito Anopheles gambiae. In each group, one child was uninfected, one was naturally infected with the asexual (non-infective) stage of Plasmodium falciparum, and one harboured the parasite's gametocytes (the stage transmissible to mosquitoes). The children harbouring gametocytes attracted about twice …

Functional Response Of Six Indigenous Trichogrammatid Egg Parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) In Kenya: Influence Of Temperature And Relative Humidity, Andrew Kalyebi, W. A. Overholt, F. Schulthess, J. M. Mueke, S. A. Hassan, S. Sithanantham Jan 2005

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the functional responses of six species/strains of native Kenyan trichogrammatids using the factitious pyralid host, Corcyra cephalonica, under different temperature and relative humidity regimes. The objective was to identify promising species/strains for controlling the noctuid Helicoverpa armigera, a serious pest of vegetables in Kenya. The six species/strains of Trichogramma and Trichogrammatoidea represented collections from low (<700 m), mid (between 700 and 1200 m) and high (>1200 m) altitude locations. They were compared for parasitisation rates at six temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C) and two relative humidity levels (40-50% and 70-80%), at five host egg densities (6, 12, 18, 24, and …
