Seasonality In Household Demand For Meat And Fish: Evidence From An Urban Area, Hali̇l Fi̇dan, Mushtaq Ahmad Klasra

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This paper, using the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS), derives estimates of factors influencing household demand for meat and fish during different seasons. Using primary data obtained from the survey, a system of equations pertaining to budget share, demand elasticities of own price, cross price and expenditure for meat and fish was estimated. The main conclusion is that there are seasonal effects on the consumption of meat and fish. In particular, during the Muslim Festival of Sacrifice the budget share of meat increases. Further, people living in urban areas were not sensitive to price increases except for in anchovy. This …

Fractal Dimensions In Red Blood Cells, Alina Rapa, Servilia Oancea, Dorina Creanga

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

We studied the erythrocyte aggregability for different animals using fractal analysis. Red blood cell aggregation is an important component of whole blood viscosity and is the major cause of the non-Newtonian flow properties of blood. To understand the aggregation process many models have been proposed in the literature. Since aggregates formed by aggregation have a fractal structure, mathematical descriptions of their irregular structure can be obtained using fractal geometry. For this purpose, blood samples were prepared from cows, sheep, rabbits, roosters, horses and humans by diluting 1:200 and mixing for 3 min in adequate reactives. A Turk room, microscope system …

The faecal carriage rate of Listeria monocytogenes in stray dogs in Bursa province, Turkey, was determined from 82 faecal samples by bacteriological methods. L. monocytogenes was isolated from only one (1.22%) of the samples examined. The isolate was serotyped as 1/2b. It was concluded that stray dogs could be a reservoir of the organism as well as a source of human listeriosis in Turkey. This is the first report on the isolation of L. monocytogenes from a dog in this country.

Modeling Cultural Cognition, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan, Jame Grimmelmann Jan 2005

Modeling Cultural Cognition, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan, Jame Grimmelmann

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this article we defend our contention that culture is prior to facts in resolving the gun debate. The basis for this position, simply put, is that culture is prior to facts in human cognition. Through an overlapping set of psychological and social mechanisms, individuals adopt the factual beliefs that are dominant among persons who share their cultural orientations. Far from being updated in light of new evidence, beliefs so formed operate as an evidentiary filter, inducing individuals to dismiss any contrary evidence as unreliable, particularly when that evidence is proffered by individuals of an opposing cultural affiliation. So even …

Arr Genes From Arsenate-Reducing Low G+C Gram Positive Bacteria Bacillus Selenitireducens Strain Mls10 And Clostridium Sp. Strain Ohilas, Mrunalini Ranganathan Jan 2005

Arr Genes From Arsenate-Reducing Low G+C Gram Positive Bacteria Bacillus Selenitireducens Strain Mls10 And Clostridium Sp. Strain Ohilas, Mrunalini Ranganathan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The gene encoding the small subunit of the respiratory arsenate reductase (arrB) from the haloalkaliphilic low G+C Gram positive bacterium Bacillus selenitireducens strain MLS-10 was amplified by PCR, cloned and sequenced. The amplicon was larger (~ 1.2 kb) than predicted indicating that the degenerate reverse primer hybridized to a region further down stream. The amplicon contained all of arrB and the 5'end of another open reading frame. The arrB (693 bp) predicts a 26.3 kDa protein of 230 amino acids with a pI of 5.5 and four iron-sulfur binding domains. The protein shares a 50% identity and 66% similarity with …

Whither Color-Blind Love? A Foucauldian Discourse Analysis Of Love In Black And White, Brian A. Mcelwain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interracial marriage remains one of the most emotionally charged issues in the troubled racial history of the United States. Love in Black and White: The Triumph of Love over Prejudice and Taboo is Mark and Gail Mathabane's relatively popular memoir of their interracial marriage. Using this text as a means of access to the discourses surrounding interracial marriage in the post-Civil Rights era, this study applies the key Foucauldian concepts of discourse, power, subjectivity, and critique to an interpretation of this text in relation to its sociohistorical context. Color-Blind Love emerges as the dominant discourse of the memoir and this …

Universal Human Rights, The United Nations, And The Telos Of Human Dignity, William J. Wagner Jan 2005

Universal Human Rights, The United Nations, And The Telos Of Human Dignity, William J. Wagner

Scholarly Articles

In this short essay, I seek to provide a description of the way the rights framework, by its nature, functions to unify global practice around normative ideals. I then outline obstacles, both theoretical and practical, to the effective functioning of this framework and the advancement of its purpose. Next, I lay out and critique the means that the Church, in its official teaching, proposes for overcoming these obstacles. I conclude by sketching briefly what I understand to be a more adequate program for addressing the impediments that exist to the realization of the aspiration of universal respect for human dignity …

This section deals with literature that examines the role and effectiveness of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in administering Iraq from 2003 till 2004. Foreign rule plays an important role in developing failed state’s infrastructure and institutions. By examining critical elements of the CPA’s administration, this section focuses on the overall success and failures of the CPA administrative capacity, and what this means for the future of Iraq’s new government. Since the cessation of the CPA, the Iraqi government has had its ups and downs and is still heavily reliant on the American presence. But some positive elements have been …

Israel, Sydney Fisher Jan 2005

Israel, Sydney Fisher

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Israel and Palestine have been in an “interim period” between full scale occupation and a negotiated end to the conflict for a long time. This supposedly intermediate period in the conflict has seen no respite from violations of Palestinians’ human rights or the suicide bombings affecting Israelis. This section will provide resources spanning the issues regarding Israel, Palestine and how the human rights dimensions of this conflict interact with the war on terror. The issue of how both sides will arrive at peace remains a mystery.

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The Central Asian republics have largely remained hidden from the world attention since they gained independence a decade ago. However, immediately following September 11th the region was brought into focus as a part of the US-led “War on Terror”. Uzbekistan became a full partner in this initiative when the government decided to allow the U.S. military full use of its territory in the invasion against Afghanistan . As Uzbek President Karimov has become willing to work with the West than neighboring countries, the debate in recent years has been how and to what extent, rather than whether or not the …

Accumulation Of Retinol In The Liver After Prolonged Hyporetinolemia In The Vitamin A-Sufficient Rat, Sin Gieng, Jens Raila, Francisco Rosales Jan 2005

Accumulation Of Retinol In The Liver After Prolonged Hyporetinolemia In The Vitamin A-Sufficient Rat, Sin Gieng, Jens Raila, Francisco Rosales

Faculty Publications

We assessed the effects of prolonged reduction of plasma retinol concentrations (hyporetinolemia) on the distribution of tissue vitamin A (VA) and of its active compounds using a model of continuous recombinant human interleukin-6 (rhIL-6) infusion via osmotic minipumps in VA-sufficient male rats. Plasma retinol and retinol-binding protein (RBP) concentrations remained decreased and lower in rhIL-6-treated rats compared with controls from 7.5 h throughout 7 days of infusion (P < 0.001). This reduction was accompanied by a 68% increase in hepatic retinol concentration by 7 days (P < 0.05). Hepatic and renal retinyl palmitate and retinoic acid concentrations did not change, and renal megalin content remained unchanged; hepatic RBP concentrations were 41% lower in rhIL-6-treated rats compared with controls (P < 0.05). These results indicate that instead of being lost, retinol accumulated in the liver during inflammation and that hyporetinolemia was attributable to a decrease in the availability of hepatic RBP. A plausible consequence of the effect of rhIL-6-induced hyporetinolemia is that by 7 days tissues that are dependent on plasma retinol may become deprived of VA.These results have important implications in understanding the mechanism by which measles infection induces hyporetinolemia and VA deficiency of extrahepatic tissues.
