Wound Debridement With 25 Khz Ultrasound, Margaret Mccarty Stanisic, Barbara Provo, David L. Larson, Luther C. Kloth Nov 2005

Wound Debridement With 25 Khz Ultrasound, Margaret Mccarty Stanisic, Barbara Provo, David L. Larson, Luther C. Kloth

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

Several methods of wound debridement are described in the literature and are available to health care providers who specialize in wound management. Methods include the use of sharp surgical instruments; mechanical methods, such as whirlpool and pulsed lavage with suction; proteolytic and collagenolytic enzymes; autolysis; and sterile fly larvae (maggots). The use of surgical debridement is generally considered the most efficient method when performed by a skilled physician, who may in one session use his or her discretion to excise some viable tissue along with necrotic tissue in the wound. Sharp debridement performed in a clinical setting is a less …

When Red Lights Look Yellow, Joanne M. Wood, David A. Atchison, Alex Chaparro Nov 2005

When Red Lights Look Yellow, Joanne M. Wood, David A. Atchison, Alex Chaparro

Publications

Purpose. Red signals are typically used to signify danger. This study was conducted to investigate a situation identified by train drivers in which red signals appear yellow when viewed at long distances (∼900 m) through progressive-addition lenses.

Methods. A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the effects of defocus, target size, ambient illumination, and surround characteristics on the extent of the color misperception of train signals by nine visually normal participants. The data from the laboratory study were validated in a field study by measuring the amounts of defocus and the distances at which the misperception of the color of …

Role Of Rapid Urease Test And Histopathology In The Diagnosis Of Helicobacter Pylori Infection In A Developing Country, Javed Yakoob, Wasim Jafri, Shahab Abid, Zaigham Abbas, Saeed Hamid, Muhammad Islam, Kashif Anis, Hasnain Ali Shah, Hizbullah Shaikh Nov 2005

Role Of Rapid Urease Test And Histopathology In The Diagnosis Of Helicobacter Pylori Infection In A Developing Country, Javed Yakoob, Wasim Jafri, Shahab Abid, Zaigham Abbas, Saeed Hamid, Muhammad Islam, Kashif Anis, Hasnain Ali Shah, Hizbullah Shaikh

Section of Gastroenterology

Background

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of commonly self-prescribed proton pump inhibitors (PPI) on the results of rapid urease test and histology for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection.

Methods

One hundred-nine consecutive patients with dyspeptic symptoms attending the endoscopy suite were enrolled in this study. Antrum biopsy specimens were collected at endoscopy for the rapid urease test (Pronto Dry, Medical Instrument Corp, France) and histopathology. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and like-hood ratio of a positive and negative of Pronto Dry test were compared against histology. The gold standard …

Women’S Role In The German Democratic Republic And The State’S Policy Toward Women, Susanne Kranz Nov 2005

Women’S Role In The German Democratic Republic And The State’S Policy Toward Women, Susanne Kranz

Journal of International Women's Studies

According to the theories of Marx, Engels, Bebel, and the political leaders of the GDR, the emancipation of women would be accomplished when the emancipation of the working class was realized. They further clarify the general view toward women in a socialist society; these ideas characterized the GDR and the general perception of women. The women’s question was incorporated into the social question and the class struggle, and not distinguished as an individual aspect of gender relations. The question is how much equality women in the GDR had achieved and how emancipated the society, truly, was. My main focus is …

Depression And Contributors To Vocational Satisfaction In Roman Catholic Secular Clergy, Sarah Knox, Stephen G. Virginia, Jessica A. Thull, John P. Lombardo

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

A nationally selected, random sample of Roman Catholic secular (i.e., diocesan) priests was examined using the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale and an instrument developed for this study to assess contributors to priests’ vocational satisfaction. In addition, a self-report inventory gathered information regarding participants’ demographics as well as four categories of predictor variables (i.e., overall level of vocational satisfaction, social support, spiritual activities, physical environment). The study yielded a response rate of 45%. Secular clergy reported rates of depression approximately seven times greater than are found in the general population, and also indicated that the recent sexual abuse scandal in …

Heterotopic Glial Tissue In Tonsil: A Case Report, Nausheen Yaqoob, Zubair Ahmed, Akhtar Husain Nov 2005

Heterotopic Glial Tissue In Tonsil: A Case Report, Nausheen Yaqoob, Zubair Ahmed, Akhtar Husain

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

We describe a six month old boy with a mass in the left tonsil. It was present since birth and was enlarging progressively. It was completely excised. Histopathology showed a choristoma of neural origin composed of glial cells--astrocytes in a fibrillary background, and a choroid plexus. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the findings.

Metanephric Adenoma: A Rare Benign Renal Tumour, Nausheen Yaqoob, Jai Pal Paryani, Naila Kayani, Mohammad Zafar Rafique, Raziuddin Biyabani

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Metanephric adenoma is a rare benign renal tumour. We are reporting one histologically proven such case in a 23 year old male from Afghanistan. He presented with severe right flank pain since 3 weeks. Nephrectomy was done and histopathology was consistent with the diagnosis of metanephric adenoma. This novel renal mass has been reported to have benign clinical course despite its symptomatic presentation and large tumour size. There is no distinguishing radiological feature with can differentiate it from malignant tumours. So far, a uniformly benign clinical course has been associated with Metanephric adenoma, but given its relatively recent identification and …

Well-Being, Burnout And Competence : Implications For Teachers., Hitendra Pillay, Richard Goddard, Lynn Wilss

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Traditionally, the teaching role has been one of nurturing and developing students’ potential. However, teachers’ work today comprises a complex mix of various factors that include teaching; learning new information and skills; keeping abreast of technological innovations and dealing with students, parents and the community. These are demanding roles and there are growing concerns about teacher well-being and competence. In particular, teachers are experiencing increasing levels of attrition, stress and burnout. This study investigated the relationship between burnout and competence for a sample of mid-career teachers in primary and secondary schools in Queensland. The results break new ground in reporting …

Disease Resistance Conferred By The Expression Of A Gene Encoding A Synthetic Peptide In Transgenic Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Plants, Kanniah Rajasekaran, Jeffrey W. Cary, Jesse M. Jaynes, Thomas E. Cleveland Nov 2005

Disease Resistance Conferred By The Expression Of A Gene Encoding A Synthetic Peptide In Transgenic Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Plants, Kanniah Rajasekaran, Jeffrey W. Cary, Jesse M. Jaynes, Thomas E. Cleveland

Faculty Articles

Fertile, transgenic cotton plants expressing the synthetic antimicrobial peptide, D4E1, were produced through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. PCR products and Southern blots confirmed integration of the D4E1 gene, while RT-PCR of cotton RNA confirmed the presence of D4E1 transcripts. In vitro assays with crude leaf protein extracts from T0 and T1 plants confirmed that D4E1 was expressed at sufficient levels to inhibit the growth of Fusarium verticillioides and Verticillium dahliae compared to extracts from negative control plants transformed with pBI-d35SΩ-uidA-nos (CGUS). Although in vitro assays did not show control of pre-germinated spores of Aspergillus flavus, bioassays with cotton …

Fast, Frugal, And (Sometimes) Wrong, Cass R. Sunstein Nov 2005

Fast, Frugal, And (Sometimes) Wrong, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Do moral heuristics operate in the moral domain? If so, do they lead to moral errors? This brief essay offers an affirmative answer to both questions. In so doing, it responds to an essay by Gerd Gigerenzer on the nature of heuristics, moral and otherwise. While focused on morality, the discussion bears on the general debate between those who emphasize cognitive errors, sometimes produced by heuristics, and those who emphasize the frequent success of heuristics in producing sensible judgments in the real world. General claims are that it is contentious to see moral problems as ones of arithmetic, and that …

Chronically Ill Adolescents' Involvement In Health Treatment Decision Making, Edna B. Domingo Phd Nov 2005

Chronically Ill Adolescents' Involvement In Health Treatment Decision Making, Edna B. Domingo Phd

Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to explore preferences for involvement of chronically ill adolescents in health treatment decision-making; describe, explain and predict relationships and differences in self-confidence in decision-making between older and younger chronically ill adolescents; and explore relationships between severity of symptoms and self-confidence in health treatment decision-making among chronically ill adolescents. Ten to twenty million American children have some type of chronic illnesses with 90% survival to adulthood. There is lack of current literature on adolescent preferences for involvement in health care decisions. Courts and legislators assume that minors lack the requisite capacity for information, and lack …
