A Comparison Of Predicting Vo2max With Two Different Heart Rate Endpoints From A Sub-Maximal Bike Test, Chad C. Shirar Jan 2005

A Comparison Of Predicting Vo2max With Two Different Heart Rate Endpoints From A Sub-Maximal Bike Test, Chad C. Shirar

Masters Theses

Obtaining VO2max values can be valuable for both healthy and diseased populations to establish exercise prescriptions, monitor progress, and monitor overall health. Unfortunately, testing procedures to obtain VO2max involve highly skilled technicians, expensive sophisticated equipment, a slight risk to the patient, and more time and more space compared to other fitness tests. The most accurate way to measure maximal oxygen uptake is by analyzing oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production using closed-circuit gas analysis while the subjects runs or walks on a treadmill or rides a cycle ergometer. The YMCA Submaximal Bicycle Ergometer test was developed to allow the subject …

Incremental Validity Of The Learning Behaviors Scale, Jessica Willenborg Jan 2005

Incremental Validity Of The Learning Behaviors Scale, Jessica Willenborg

Masters Theses

Previous research on the incremental validity of the Learning Behaviors Scale (LBS; McDermott, Green, Francis, & Stott, 1999) has shown that good learning behaviors were associated with good academic achievement (Schaefer & McDermott, 1999; Yen, Konold, & McDermott, 2004). Additionally, research has indicated that learning behaviors account for appreciable variation in student grades and academic achievement test scores above and beyond the contribution of intelligence (Schaefer, 1996). The present study investigated the influence of cognitive ability and learning behaviors in the prediction of scores from standardized academic achievement tests. Learning behaviors were assessed with the LBS (McDermott et al., 1999) …

Design Of A Satellite Cluster System In Distributed Simulation, Jong Sik Lee, Thong Luu, Vijaya K. Konangi Jan 2005

Design Of A Satellite Cluster System In Distributed Simulation, Jong Sik Lee, Thong Luu, Vijaya K. Konangi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This article presents the design and development of a satellite cluster system that supports an interfederation communication in High Level Architecture (HLA)-compliant distributed simulation. The interfederation communication enables the execution of a complex, large-scale cluster system of distributed satellites that share the dispersed data assets among satellite components collaboratively. After a brief review of the HLA bridge for interfederation communication, the authors discuss the design issues related to a satellite cluster system that provides cluster management, interfederation communication, and communication data management. They analyze system performance and scalability for centralized and decentralized configurations. The empirical results on the heterogeneous …

Hormone Replacement Therapy: Attitudes, Knowledge, And Usage By Perimenopausal And Postmenopausal Women, Misty Lynn Rhoads

Masters Theses

With an increased life expectancy, women are living an average of 30 yearars after the set of menopause. With the change in life, there is a significant change in t onse the production of female hormones which causes unpleasant side effects that includes hot flashes, osteoporosis, nausea, and palpitations. Hormone replacement therapy was promoted to provide relief for women. However, research has shown that HRT may increase the risk of endometrial cancer, strokes and breast cancer. Therefore, women are given contradictory information concerning HRT. The current study explored the attitudes, knowledge and intentions of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women concerning hormone …

The Relationship Between Future Orientation And Street Substance Use Among Texas Alternative School Students, R J Peters, Susan R Tortolero, Regina Jones Johnson, Robert C Addy, Christine M Markham, S Liliana Escobar-Chaves, Holly Lewis, George S Yacoubian

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Self-reported substance use data were collected from 963 alternative school students in grades 7-12 who were surveyed through the Safer Choices 2 study in Houston, Texas. Data were collected between October 2000 and March 2001. Logistic regression analyses indicated that lower levels of future orientation was significantly associated (OR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.81-0.97) with thirty-day substance use after controlling for age and gender. In addition, lower levels of future orientation was found to have a significant association with students' lifetime substance use (OR = 0.93, 95% CI = 0.87-.99) after controlling for age, race, and gender. While the …

Computer Security Perceptions Of Students Attending The School Of Technology At Eastern Illinois University, David C. Fulton

Masters Theses

Computer security is a major concern that demands attention. Computer viruses and other security risks proliferate on a daily basis. In the academic environment several disciplines of learning may share a common network or computer environment. This situation presents a number of challenges for a university. Allowing access to the Internet yet protecting the interests of the school can be a difficult undertaking. Data protection and the liabilities associated with protecting data is a major undertaking for a university.

This thesis examines the perceptions of students attending the School of Technology at Eastern Illinois University in the area of computer …

Leadership Behaviors And Subordinate Resilience, Lynn K. Harland, Wayne Harrison, James R. Jones, Roni Reiter-Palmon Jan 2005

Leadership Behaviors And Subordinate Resilience, Lynn K. Harland, Wayne Harrison, James R. Jones, Roni Reiter-Palmon

Psychology Faculty Publications

Utilizing a sample of 150 part-time MBA students, this study evaluated the relationship between leader behaviors and subordinate resilience. We proposed that the transformational leadership dimensions of Attributed Charisma, Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individualized Consideration, as well as the transactional leadership dimension of Contingent Reward would be positively associated with subordinate resilience. We also proposed that the transactional leadership dimensions of Management-by-Exception Active and Management-by-Exception Passive and the non-leadership dimension of Laissez-Faire leadership would not be positively associated with subordinate resilience. With the exception of Inspirational Motivation, all hypothesized relationships were supported. A post-hoc analysis of open-ended …

Observations And Ratings Of Preschool Children’S Social Behavior: Issues Of Representativeness And Validity, Brian Mckevitt, Stephen N. Elliott Jan 2005

Observations And Ratings Of Preschool Children’S Social Behavior: Issues Of Representativeness And Validity, Brian Mckevitt, Stephen N. Elliott

Psychology Faculty Publications

Data were gathered from videotaped recordings of two preschool children engaged in unstructured free play over 12 days each. Observers coded behavior from the videotapes and completed a behavior rating scale for each child after every two observation sessions. Teachers also completed two behavior rating scales per child. Results indicated that at least three 30-min observation sessions were required to reliably represent a child’s overall behavior. Moderate correlations were obtained when observations were compared with teachers’ and observers’ own ratings, indicating the behavior rating scale did an adequate job of reflecting actual observed behavior. The implications of these results for …

A Diabolical Disneyland In Zion: The Mormons And The Mx, Jacob W. Olmstead

Theses and Dissertations

In September 1979 President Jimmy Carter publicly announced his decision to support the deployment of the MX missile and mobile basing scheme in Utah and Nevada. Despite local opposition and the close proximity of the proposed base to its headquarters, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) remained silent until 5 May 1981, when the First Presidency issued a statement opposing the MX plans. The purpose of this work is to narrate the history of the development of the Mormon position regarding the deployment of MX missile in the Great Basin and evaluate the response to the statement …

Ccl20/Macrophage Inflammatory Protein 3Α And Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Production By Primary Uterine Epithelial Cells In Response To Treatment With Lipopolysaccharide Or Pam3cys, M. A. Crane-Godreau, C. R. Wira Jan 2005

R. Wira

Dartmouth Scholarship

Having previously shown that CCL20/macrophage inflammatory protein 3 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) are released by polarized primary rat uterine epithelial cells (UEC) in response to Escherichia coli but not to Lactobacillus rhamnosus , we sought to determine if epithelial cells are responsive to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP), including lipopolysaccharide (LPS), lipoteichoic acid (LTA), and Pam 3 Cys, a bacterial lipoprotein analog. Epithelial cells were grown to confluence on Nunc cell culture inserts prior to apical treatment with PAMPs. In response to LPS, LTA, and Pam 3 Cys (EMC Microcollection GmbH, Tu ̈- bingen, Germany), CCL20 levels increased (4- …

Order Without Social Norms: How Personal Norm Activation Can Protect The Environment, Michael P. Vandenbergh Jan 2005

Order Without Social Norms: How Personal Norm Activation Can Protect The Environment, Michael P. Vandenbergh

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article tackles a leading problem confronting norms theorists and regulators: how can the law induce changes in behavior when the material costs to the individual outweigh the benefits and there is no close-knit community to impose sanctions for failure to change? Because private individuals and households are now surprisingly large contributors to environmental problems ranging from toxic pollution to climate change, environmental policy makers face compelling examples of these negative-payoff, loose-knit group situations. This Article suggests that internalized personal norms, rather than social norms, are the most important initial target of opportunity for influencing this kind of behavior.

Lifelong Learning For Older Persons In Hong Kong, Sze Sze, Stephanie Hui Jan 2005

Lifelong Learning For Older Persons In Hong Kong, Sze Sze, Stephanie Hui

Lingnan Theses

Lifelong learning (LL) has been widely regarded as one of the activities that can enhance well-being of the society and benefit older persons in terms of psychological, physical, mental, and cognitive well-being. In foreign countries like the Unites States of America, the United Kingdom, Finland, France, Australia, and also China, LL among older persons had been developed successfully. Hong Kong, in contrast, has no systematic planning for the development of LL even though the aged population is increasing rapidly. This research aims at constructing a LL model for older persons in Hong Kong. The theoretical framework of study focused on …
