Germans In Sacramento, 1850-1859, Carole C. Terry Jan 2005

Germans In Sacramento, 1850-1859, Carole C. Terry

Psi Sigma Siren

During the 1850s in Sacramento, German-born immigrants banded together in an ethnically based neighborhood where they created a sub-culture of "German-ness," practicing their own particular rituals and customs. At the same time, these foreign-born joined the Anglo-American majority to addresses the chaos and disorder brought on by the dramatic increase in Sacramento's population due to the discovery of gold in 1849. Contemporary accounts such as newspapers, directories, histories and unpublished manuscripts confirm the existence of this strong community and its attempts to duplicate institutions they remembered in Germany and ethnic settlements in America. Despite their small numbers, they influenced the …

Technical Risk Information: Decision Tool Or Rhetorical Ammunition? Undisputed Facts In The Yucca Mountain Debate, David M. Hassenzahl, Denise Tillery, Paulette Laidler Jan 2005

Technical Risk Information: Decision Tool Or Rhetorical Ammunition? Undisputed Facts In The Yucca Mountain Debate, David M. Hassenzahl, Denise Tillery, Paulette Laidler

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

This paper examines how both opponents and proponents of the proposed high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca mountain Nevada claim that uncontroversial information supports their conflicting positions. Four pieces of information in particular are claimed by both sides: the distance of the proposed site from Las Vegas, the volume of waste that has been produced, the threat of terrorism since 9/11/01, and the occurrence of an earthquake in early 2002. Possible explanations for the difference include naive positivism, social constructionism, persistent beliefs and implicit warrants. The latter two models better explain observed knowledge/preference states. If so, more or better information …

Lipid Profile And Lipid Peroxidation Pattern Pre And Post Exercise In Coronary Artery Disease, Hedef D. El-Yassin, Nabil M. A. Hasso, Hassan A. Al-Rubayi

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Increased aerobic metabolism during exercise is a potential source of oxidative stress, which plays an important role in the development of atherosclerotic disease, while antioxidants delay or prevent various steps in atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to identify the effect of oxidative stress induced by the TMT (Treadmill exercise Test) and the lipid peroxidation level as and lipid profile in blood, which may help in confirming the diagnosis of CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) in borderline cases of TMT results. This may help in future for early detection and possible prevention of atherosclerosis especially in people with a family …

Lymphocyte Subpopulations In Patients With Acute Brucellosis, İlhami̇ Çeli̇k, H. Handan Akbulut

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this work was to evaluate changes in lymphocyte subpopulations, especially helper and cytotoxic T cells, in acute brucellosis patients undergoing treatment. Forty-three acute brucellosis patients were included in the study. Twenty healthy subjects served as controls. Total lymphocytes and the CD3^+, CD4^+, CD8^+, CD19^+ and CD (16+56)^+ subpopulations were counted by two-color flow cytometric analysis. The CD4+ counts in patients before and after treatment were not statistically different (p = 0.7), but healthy subjects had significantly more of these cells (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001 compared to pre- and post-treatment patients, respectively). The CD8^+ counts …

Evaluation Of Plasma Protein C Antigen, Protein C Activity And Thrombomodulin Levels In Type 2 Diabetic Patients, Berna Aslan, Nezaket Eren, Şebnem Ci̇ğerli̇, Fatma Müldür, Ni̇hal Yücel

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The imbalance between coagulation and fibrinolysis leads to vascular complications in diabetics. In our study, we have investigated the effects of the protein C-thrombomodulin system as a cause of diabetic vascular complications. Whereas PC-Ag levels were lower, thrombomodulin (TM) levels of diabetics were higher than that of the controls (P < 0.001, P < 0.001 respectively). Furthermore, patients were divided into three groups according to their urinary albumin excretion (UAE). Group 1, 2 and 3 consisted of 27 patients with UAC £ 30 µg/ml, 16 patients with UAC in range 30-140 µg/ml, 3 patients with UAC >140 µg/ml, respectively. Plasma PC-Ag levels were significantly decreased in group 1 and 2 with respect to controls (P < 0.01, P < 0.01). Plasma TM concentrations were significantly increased in group 1, 2 and 3 compared with the control group (P < 0.001, P < 0.01, P < 0.01). Patients were also divided into two groups according to the duration of their illness; patients whose diabetic age < 10 years (Group A) and whose diabetic age > 10 years (Group B). In both groups, PC-Ag levels were lower and TM levels higher than that of the control group (P < 0.01, P < 0.01; P < 0.001, P < 0.001 respectively). There was no significant difference between group A and B in PC-Ag levels (P > 0.50) but a significant difference in TM levels (P < 0.001).

Professional Responsibility Redesigned: Sparking A Dialogue Between Students And The Bar, Lois R. Lupica

Faculty Publications

In recent years, there have been many public and private, formal and informal complaints about the behavior of lawyers. Moreover, lawyers' tenuous reputation for honesty and integrity has been tarnished by recent, well-publicized scandals. The public, as well as members of the bench and bar, have further decried a decline in attorney professionalism. More than once, it has been suggested that in some way, failings of law schools are to blame. In response to these observations about the professional behavior of lawyers and as a result of the author's experiences of teaching a traditional, Socratic-method Professional Responsibility class for many …

College Students: Vulnerable To Hiv/Aids And The Least Educated?, Regine Rochelle Rucker Jan 2005

College Students: Vulnerable To Hiv/Aids And The Least Educated?, Regine Rochelle Rucker

Masters Theses

In the United States, women, African Americans, and youth are emerging as the face of HIV and AIDS. Since there is no cure, education and prevention is important to halting the spread of the disease. However, first, the current knowledge level of at risk populations, and others, must be revealed to appropriately address misconceptions and deficiencies in HIV awareness and ultimately change at risk behaviors. Many studies acknowledge the overall lack of HIV awareness, however, few identify and make recommendations to address the knowledge deficiencies, specifically in at risk populations. The following research statistically demonstrates that the knowledge of HIV/AIDS …

A Bibliotherapy Evaluation Tool: Grounding Counselors In The Therapeutic Use Of Literature, D. Pehrsson, P. S. Mcmillen

Library Faculty Research

The idea that the arts can benefit the emotional well-being of the observer, creator or reader has been around at least since Aristotle proposed the notion of emotional catharsis. Freud, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, acknowledged his intellectual debt to creative artists, suggesting that they, not he, had first discovered the unconscious (cited in Shrodes, 1950, p. 2). Certainly creative artists have become visible and valuable participants in the therapeutic milieu over the last century in the United States (Junge, 1994). Freud further suggested that, in the therapeutic process, “Storytellers are valuable allies and their testimony is to …

Development Of Dose Coefficients For Radionuclides Produced In Spallation Targets, Phillip W. Patton, Mark Rudin Jan 2005

Development Of Dose Coefficients For Radionuclides Produced In Spallation Targets, Phillip W. Patton, Mark Rudin

Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)

Dose coefficients permit simple determination of radiation dose associated with various exposure scenarios, and ultimately permit radiation safety personnel to assess the health risks to workers in a nuclear facility. Specifically, radiation safety personnel use dose coefficients to determine the radiation dose incurred to a tissue or organ system from a given exposure. These parameters are often expressed in terms of Annual Limits on Intake (ALIs) and Derived Air Concentrations (DACs).

The research consortium comprised of representatives from several universities and national laboratories has successfully generated internal and external dose conversion coefficients for twenty radionuclides produced in spallation neutron sources. …

The Impact Of Institutional Ownership On Firm Performance In The Hospitality Industry, Ming-Chih Tsai

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Institutional investors have become important players in today's financial markets and their increasing importance in corporate governance in the United States (U.S.) is further evidenced by the growing volume of corporate equity they control. The ownership structure/firm performance relationship has always been a subject of debate. Similarly, in the hospitality industry as of June 2002, institutional investors were estimated to own {dollar}2.3 billion, or 66.7% of total outstanding shares in PricewaterhouseCoopers' lodging universe; This dissertation examines the impact of institutional ownership on firm performance as measured by a proxy for Tobin's Q in the restaurant, casino and hotel sectors from …

This document provides a transcription for wind symphony of Taras Bulba: Rhapsody for Orchestra by Leos Janacek. A brief historical background of Leos Janacek is presented including the influence of Russophilism on many of his musical compositions. Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol's novella is comparatively placed alongside the programmatic storyline of the rhapsody of Taras Bulba upon which this piece is based. Within this framework, differing views of musical symbolism are elucidated. The defense of transcriptions, criteria for selection of pieces, and problems associated with the transcription process are examined along with the techniques utilized in the solution of said problems within …

Collaborative Literacy Learning Communities: What Three Title I Schools Teach Us, Carol Ann Esposito Jan 2005

Collaborative Literacy Learning Communities: What Three Title I Schools Teach Us, Carol Ann Esposito

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Many school reformers endorse collaborative learning communities among educators since the mid 1980's to improve schools. Learning communities strengthen the school's culture of learning. Collaborative literacy learning communities focus on collaboration about literacy learning among teachers as well as the acceptance and exchange of literacy learning leadership roles by the literacy specialist and classroom teachers. This research investigates the three schools' culture of learning. Each school reflects a different culture of learning (i.e. highly collaborative, moderately collaborative, and non-collaborative). This study reveals reciprocity in learning and learning leadership and support from learning leaders maintain powerful communities of learning. Negative influences …

The Neuropsychological Correlates Of Individuals At Risk For Bipolar I Disorder, Linda V Frantom Jan 2005

The Neuropsychological Correlates Of Individuals At Risk For Bipolar I Disorder, Linda V Frantom

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Bipolar disorder is now recognized as a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by extreme mood swings and cognitive deficits, most notably in the domains of verbal learning, executive function, and sustained attention. Neurocognitive deficits have been proposed as vulnerability markers or endophenotypes for the development of bipolar disorder. However, few research studies have examined whether neurocognitive deficits also exist in individuals at risk for bipolar disorder or first-degree relatives. This study examined neurocognitive function in individuals with bipolar disorder, their first-degree relatives, and a normal control group. Results indicated that individuals with bipolar disorder and their unaffected relatives demonstrated neuropsychological deficits …

A Reliable And Resource Aware Framework For Data Dissemination In Wireless Sensor Networks, Vasu Jolly Jan 2005

A Reliable And Resource Aware Framework For Data Dissemination In Wireless Sensor Networks, Vasu Jolly

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Distinctive from traditional wireless ad hoc networks, wireless sensor networks (WSN) comprise a large number of low-cost miniaturized nodes each acting autonomously and equipped with short-range wireless communication mechanism, limited memory, processing power, and a physical sensing capability. Since sensor networks are resource constrained in terms of power, bandwidth and computational capability, an optimal system design radically changes the performance of the sensor network. Here, a comprehensive information dissemination scheme for wireless sensor networks is performed. Two main research issues are considered: (1) a collaborative flow of information packet/s from the source to sink and (2) energy efficiency of the …
