Status Of Oral Rabies Vaccination In Wild Carnivores In The United States, Dennis Slate, Charles E. Rupprecht, Jane A. Rooney, Dennis Donovan, Donald H. Lein, Richard B. Chipman
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Persistence of multiple variants of rabies virus in wild Chiroptera and Carnivora presents a continuing challenge to medical, veterinary and wildlife management professionals. Oral rabies vaccination (ORV) targeting specific Carnivora species has emerged as an integral adjunct to conventional rabies control strategies to protect humans and domestic animals. ORV has been applied with progress toward eliminating rabies in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in western Europe and southern Ontario, Canada. More recently since 1995, coordinated ORV was implemented among eastern states in the U.S.A. to prevent spread of raccoon (Procyon lotor) rabies and to contain and eliminate …

Objectives: This study was designed to explore the interactions between food securing activities, health and gender equity from the perspective of rural east African women. The specific objectives were to document the critical interaction among these three issues - food security, gender inequity, women's health within the context of sub-Saharan Africa; to describe the nature of this triad from the perspective of women farmers in Africa; and to propose a framework for linking available interventions to the vicious nature of this triad.
Setting: In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with rural women farmers in Kwale District, Kenya and …

Permissive Pornography: The Selective Censorship Of The Internet Under Cipa, Heidi Wachs
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note critiques the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and its implementation, arguing that while its intent to protect children from online pornography is laudable, the mandated use of Internet filters is flawed. The study demonstrates that current filtering technology often overblocks access to critical nonpornographic health information, particularly affecting vulnerable populations like teenagers seeking sexual health resources. The Supreme Court's ruling in United States v. American Library Association upheld CIPA, dismissing less restrictive alternatives, but the article contends that this approach may harm patrons by restricting access to essential information.

As a spirochete, the genus Treponema is one of the few major bacterial groups whose natural phylogenic relationships are evident at the level of gross phenotypic characteristics such as their morphology. Treponema spp. are highly invasive due to their unique motility in dense media, and their ability to penetrate cell layers. This feature is associated with the helical cell body and the presence of flagellar filaments in the periplasm. Treponema denticola is an oral pathogen involved in endodontic infections and periodontal diseases. The presence and quantity of T. denticola in the subgingival biofilm is correlated with the severity of periodontal …

A hypothesis-based framework was used to test if 3 genetic strains of Mesocestoides (clades A, B, and C) are distinct evolutionary lineages, thereby supporting their delimitation as species. For comparative purposes, 3 established cestode species, Taenia pisiformis, Taenia serialis, and Taenia crassiceps were assessed using the same methods. Sequence data from mitochondrial rDNA (12S) and the second internal transcribed spacer of nuclear rDNA (ITS-2) revealed derived (autapomorphic) characters for lineages representing clade A (n = 6 autapomorphies), clade B (n = 4), and clade C (n = 9) as well as T. pisiformis (n = 15) and T. serialis …

Individual specimens of Anisakis, Pseudoterranova, and Contracaecum collected from marine mammals inhabiting northern Pacific waters were used for comparative diagnostic and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Forty-eight new sequences were obtained for this study of 14 Anisakis taxa, 8 Pseudoterranova taxa, 4 Contracaecum taxa, and 4 outgroup species. Partial 28S (LSU) and complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1, 5.8S, ITS-2) ribosomal DNA was amplified by the polymerase chain reaction and sequenced. Sequences of ITS indicated that Pseudoterranova specimens from Zalophus californianus (California sea lion), Mirounga angustirostris (northern elephant seal), Phoca vitulina (harbor seal), Enhydra lutris (sea otter), and Eumetopias jubatus (Steller’s …

Confidentiality In Mediation: Is It Encouraging Good Mediation Or Bad Conduct, Sarah Williams
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Mediation has long been used in the judicial system of the United States to offer an alternative to litigation which can save time and money. Not only have its cost-effective and time efficient attributes contributed to its use, but the judiciary and legislature have often encouraged its use in order to mitigate the number of cases in the court system. In some states, the legislature has enacted statutes to make mediation mandatory before certain adjudications will even take place. Furthermore, to encourage these mediations to settle, many legislatures and jurisdictions have enacted statutes to protect the confidentiality of the mediation. …

The Business Fallout From The Rapid Obsolescence And Plannedobsolescence Of High-Tech Products: Downsizing Of Noncompetition Agreements, Ann C. Hodges, Porcher L. Taylor Iii
Law Faculty Publications
The recent rapid pace of technological change has made human capital more important, yet it has rendered the employee’s knowledge base obsolete more quickly. Employers use covenants not to compete, restricting employees from switching to work for competitors, in order to retain knowledgeable personnel. Currently, the lack of predictability in interpreting noncompete agreements allows employers to draft overly-lengthy noncompetes, encourages enforcement litigation, and curtails employees from changing jobs because of the fear of litigation. Employees should not be prevented from working for competitors for longer than is necessary to protect the employer’s legitimate interest. Use of obsolescence as a guide …

The New Iraq: Resolving Public And Private Obligations Incurred Under Saddam Hussein's Rule In The Context Of International Arbitration, Darius Adam Marzec
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Saddam Hussein's rule in Iraq collapsed on April 9, 2003, after an American-led coalition invasion. The coalition quickly deposed the Iraqi dictator and began the process of turning the nation away from authoritarian rule, murder, and death, to civility. While Saddam Hussein is gone, and no government-supported oppression of people exists, another form of tyranny persists: Iraq's modern economy is burdened with $383 billion in public debt and judgments. Adding insult to injury, after the coalition troops drove up to Baghdad through the desert, Iraq's banking system turned out to be insolvent.

The Unguided Use Of Internal Adr Programs To Resolve Sexual Harassment Controversies In The Workplace, Jessica Oser
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
This Note will explore some of the concerns raised by the use of mandatory IDR mechanisms in the workplace, particularly in the context of resolving sexual harassment disputes. As previously noted, the use of IDR in the workplace can be highly effective and beneficial for both the employee and the employer. However, just as the Food and Drug Administration approves drugs that have potentially harmful side effects, the public and the U.S. government should approve of the use of IDR mechanisms despite the potential for abuse. In both circumstances, the public deserves to be warned about the possible dangers. This …

Law, Geography And Cyberspace: The Case Of On-Line Territorial Privacy, Daniel Benoliel
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
Territorial privacy, one of the central categories of privacy protection, involves setting limit boundaries on intrusion into an explicit space or locale. Initially, the Restatement (Second) of Torts, which defined the privacy tort of intrusion as applied by courts, most notably designated two classes of excluded areas: "private" places in which the individual can expect to be free from intrusion, and "non-private" places, in which the individual does not have a recognized expectation of privacy. In the physical world, courts ultimately held, almost uniformly, that the tort of intrusion could not occur in a public place or in a place …

The article discusses that the product applications of bioprospecting are almost limitless. This area of biotechnology has been labeled bioprospecting, and it is a practice that is creating worldwide controversy. Defined simply, bioprospecting is "scientific research that looks for a useful application, process, or product in nature." However, as with most biotechnologies, the definition does not address the complexities of bioprospecting. Archeologists are finding that some biotechnologies, such as the use of herbs for medicine and the use of fermentation and yeast in food products, date back 5,000 to 10,000 years (De Miranda, 2004). The four main categories of biotechnologies …

Make Room For Dying: End Of Life Care In Nursing Homes, Sandra H. Johnson
All Faculty Scholarship
The cornerstone of contemporary nursing home care is a commitment to patient rehabilitation. Improved care is an important and worthwhile goal, but it is a goal that has yet to make room for the dying. A significant proportion of older people will spend their final days in a nursing home. This article calls for a culture shift in nursing home care to promote improved care for not only those who can be rehabilitated but also those who are dying.
This article begins by addressing challenges to achieving this culture that are particular to the nursing home context. It then explains …

Practical tools are needed to identify and advance sustainable management practices to optimize economic return, conserve soil, and minimize negative off-site environmental effects. The objective of this article is to review current research in non-saline soils of the central U.S. to consider bulk soil electrical conductivity (ECa) as an assessment tool for: (1) tracking N dynamics, (2) identifying management zones, (3) monitoring soil quality trends, and (4) designing and evaluating field-scale experiments. The interpretation and utility of ECa are highly location and soil specific; soil properties contributing to measured ECa must be clearly understood. In soils …

A non-isotopic single-strand conformation polymorphism (‘cold’ SSCP) technique has been assessed for the analysis of sequence variability in the expansion segment 5 (ES5) of domain IV and the D3 domain of nuclear ribosomal DNA within and/or among isolates and individual muscle (first-stage) larvae representing all currently recognized species/genotypes of Trichinella. Data are consistent with the ability of cold SSCP to identify intra-specific as well as inter-specific variability among Trichinella genotypes. The cold SSCP approach should be applicable to a range of other genetic markers for comparative studies of Trichinella populations globally.

Obesity is recognized as a major public health problem. Obesity is a multifactorial disease and is often associated with a wide range of comorbidities including hypertension, non-insulin dependent (Type II) diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease, all of which contribute to morbidity and mortality. This review deals with stable isotope mass spectrometric methods and the application of stable isotopes to metabolic studies of obesity. Body composition and total energy expenditure (TEE) can be measured by mass spectrometry using stable isotope labeled water, and the metabolism of protein, lipid, and carbohydrate can be measured using appropriate labeled tracer molecules.
Colonization Of Wounded Peanut Seeds By Soil Fungi: Selectivity For Species From Aspergillus Section Flavi, Bruce W. Horn

Soil is a source of primary inoculum for Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus, fungi that produce highly carcinogenic aflatoxins in peanuts. Aflatoxigenic fungi commonly invade peanut seeds during maturation, and the highest concentrations of aflatoxins are found in damaged seeds. A laboratory procedure was developed in which viable peanut seeds were wounded and inoculated with field soil containing natural populations of fungi, then incubated under different conditions of seed water activity and temperature. Densities of Aspergillus section Flavi in soil used for inoculating seeds were low relative to the total numbers of filamentous fungi (,1%). Aspergillus species from section Flavi …
