The Evaluation Of Rectal Bleeding In Adults, Elizabeth Allen, Christina Nicolaidis, Mark Helfand Jan 2005

The Evaluation Of Rectal Bleeding In Adults, Elizabeth Allen, Christina Nicolaidis, Mark Helfand

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in this country.5 The majority of medical societies recommend some form of colon cancer screening for asymptomatic adult patients over age 50. The evaluation of rectal bleeding is different from screening because the risk of serious disease is higher and it is unclear whether early diagnosis and treatment of serious disease results in improved mortality once gross bleeding has occurred. The optimal evaluation strategy for rectal bleeding is unknown. Neither historical information nor the presence or absence of hemorrhoids has been shown to reliably differentiate benign from serious disease.6–11 Fecal …

'Global Civil Society': A Sceptical View, Kenneth Anderson, David Rieff Jan 2005

'Global Civil Society': A Sceptical View, Kenneth Anderson, David Rieff

Contributions to Books

American University, WCL Research Paper No. 2008-69 Abstract: The editors of the leading yearbook of global civil society studies offered to the authors of this article an opportunity to present a skeptical account of global civil society as the opening chapter in the 2004/5 yearbook. The article examines the standard account of global civil society as the transnational equivalent, in a globalized world, of civil society in a domestic society, and further as, in Kofi Annan's oft-repeated view, international NGOs as the representatives of the peoples of the world to international organizations such as the UN. The article attacks this …

Constitutionalizing Tobacco: The Ambivalence Of European Federalism, Fernanda Nicola Jan 2005

Constitutionalizing Tobacco: The Ambivalence Of European Federalism, Fernanda Nicola

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The Treaty Establishing the European Community announces in EC TREATY art. 5.1. the principle that the powers of the European Community are limited to those specifically conferred on it. However, experience and judicial interpretation have shown that, in practice, the allocation of power between the Community decision maker and Member States is neither clear nor immutable. In its Treaty Establishing a Constitution for Europe, the Community attempts to clarify the allocation of competences. Article III-278 of the Draft E.U. Constitution (Public Health Article) is a public health provision that expressly refers to the regulation of tobacco. To many, the Public …

Supply Chain Contracts And Food Safety, S. Andrew Starbird Jan 2005

Supply Chain Contracts And Food Safety, S. Andrew Starbird

Information Systems and Analytics

In this article, I examine how supply chain contracts can be designed to improve the safety of purchased inputs. Contracts are frequently used to govern the exchange of goods, services, information, and money between supply chain participants. Even when sellers have more information about the product safety than buyers do, contracts can be used to enhance food safety.

A New Comprehensive Methodology For The Evaluation Of Product Sustainability At The Design Stage Of Consumer Electronics Products, Niranjali De Silva Jan 2005

A New Comprehensive Methodology For The Evaluation Of Product Sustainability At The Design Stage Of Consumer Electronics Products, Niranjali De Silva

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The aim of this thesis is to investigate and generate quantifiable measures of sustainability elements that apply to manufactured products in terms of environmental, social and economic benefits. This paper presents a new comprehensive methodology for sustainability evaluation of a new product at the design and development stage focusing on consumer electronics products through a Sustainability Scoring method. A new product is evaluated for its integral elemental and the overall sustainability contents impacting the product when it reaches the end-of-life by considering the entire life-cycle including the effective residual use of recovered materials in the subsequent life-cycles of the same …

Bilingual School Psychologists' Practices With Students With Limited English Proficiency, Christopher John Lopes Jan 2005

Bilingual School Psychologists' Practices With Students With Limited English Proficiency, Christopher John Lopes

Open Access Dissertations

The present study investigated bilingual school psychologists' practices with students with limited English proficiency (LEP). Two hundred and forty-five psychologists from the 2000 National Association of School Psychologists (HASP) directory of bilingual school psychologists were asked to complete a survey reporting demographic information, levels and kinds of professional experiences, current assessment and other professional practices, levels of perceived accuracy, and levels and types of training. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the demographic information and assessment instruments used. Point-biserial correlations were used to evaluate the degree of relationship between selected pairs of variables. A series of principle component analysis was …

Problematic Interactions Between Parents And Their Children With Adhd: Role Of Attributions, Emotions, Discipline Practices, And Comorbid Odd, Danielle Alexandra Ruskin Jan 2005

Problematic Interactions Between Parents And Their Children With Adhd: Role Of Attributions, Emotions, Discipline Practices, And Comorbid Odd, Danielle Alexandra Ruskin

Open Access Dissertations

Two empirical studies are presented that specifically examine three parenting factors known to contribute to the problematic relationships observed between mothers and their children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Mothers causal attributions for, their emotional reactions to, and their discipline towards their children's misbehaviors. Parenting factors in both studies were elicited using a written scenario methodology. In the first study, mothers' attributions, emotional reactions, and discipline towards their children's inattentive-overactive (IO) and oppositional-defiant (OD) behaviors were compared in 41 mothers of children with ADHD, 44 mothers of children with ADHD and comorbid Conduct Problems (ADHD+CP), and 59 mothers of children without …

The Roles Of Precaution And Political Accountability In The Regulation Of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers, Danielle Brim Jan 2005

The Roles Of Precaution And Political Accountability In The Regulation Of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers, Danielle Brim

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The differing approaches used in the United States and the European Union to regulate toxic chemicals have been highlighted by debates about a group of chemicals called polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs. PBDEs act as flame-retardants and are added to consumer products to increase their safety. Questions about the continued use of PBDEs have been raised, however, because of concerns that PBDEs may be dangerous to human health and the environment. The European Union has decided to ban two types of PBDEs, while the United States has not issued similar restrictions. In this Note, the Author argues that neither decision …

Global Gene Expression Profiling Of Cells Overexpressing Smc3., Giancarlo Ghiselli, Chang-Gong Liu Jan 2005

Global Gene Expression Profiling Of Cells Overexpressing Smc3., Giancarlo Ghiselli, Chang-Gong Liu

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The Structural Maintenance of Chromosome 3 protein (SMC3) plays an essential role during the sister chromatid separation, is involved in DNA repair and recombination and participates in microtubule-mediated intracellular transport. SMC3 is frequently elevated in human colon carcinoma and overexpression of the protein transforms murine NIH3T3 fibroblasts. In order to gain insight into the mechanism of SMC3-mediated tumorigenesis a gene expression profiling was performed on human 293 cells line stably overexpressing SMC3. RESULTS: Biotinylated complementary RNA (cRNA) was used for hybridization of a cDNAmicroarray chip harboring 18,861 65-mer oligos derived from the published dEST sequences. After filtering, the hybridization …
