The Development And Implementation Of A Pilot Training Course In Pastoral Diagnosis For Six Pastors In The Lake Region Conference, Richard D.B. Sylvester
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
This study was an examination of the counseling style of six pastors and to determine if they have a clearly defined method of informing their interventions.
Method
The task of this dissertation was to design a curriculum to train a pilot group of six pastors in the Lake Region Conference to do spiritual diagnoses and assessments and to have a better psychological understanding of diagnosing in their pastoral ministry. They learned how to integrate spirituality and psychology into their counseling. They were also taught some DSM-IV concepts and how to use the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) Scale.

A Strategy For The Motivation Of The Uninvolved Church Member: A Pilot Project In The Gloucester Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Michael G. Hamilton
A Strategy For The Motivation Of The Uninvolved Church Member: A Pilot Project In The Gloucester Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Michael G. Hamilton
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
In the average Seventh-day Adventist church in the South England Conference the pastor is often not equipped with the time and the resources to conduct an adequate training and education program for the uninvolved member. Spiritual Gifts seminars, outreach, and witnessing seminars are often conducted away from the local church and are largely supported only by those who are already deeply committed, but the shy, introverted, and uninformed member is increasingly uninvolved in the work of soul winning and the local ministries, and is not involved in the training activities of the church.
Method
A church involvement survey was …
A Strategy For Developing Holistic Churches In London: A Case Study Of North Wembley Seventh-Day Adventist Community Church, Steve A. Thomas
A Strategy For Developing Holistic Churches In London: A Case Study Of North Wembley Seventh-Day Adventist Community Church, Steve A. Thomas
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
The lack of space for growing membership and to house ministries had allowed the members and officers to live with no clear picture of what they were supposed to be doing and where they were going as a church. The concept of developing a strategic plan and planning for progress was almost foreign to many. Because of these learned habits it was increasingly difficult to gain support for an increase in planned activities. Scheduled programs and activities were not supported. The laity was lacking in motivation for gospel work and had not been adequately trained for mission work. Members …

Building A Place Of Worship: The Journey Of The Downsview Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Toronto, Kenneth Roy Campbell
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Purpose
The purpose of this dissertation is to outline the process of constructing a new place of worship for the Downsview Seventh-day Adventist Church in Toronto, Canada. It can also serve to help other church congregations design and build appropriate places of worship.
Problem
The Downsview Church had been renting worship space for more than sixteen years. The use of rented space made fulfilling the mission of the church difficult for a variety of reasons. A new physical place of worship for the church was essential.
Method
In this dissertation, I examine biblical and theological principles for building places of …
A Study In Nineteenth-Century American Costumes Based On Mary Todd Lincoln And Thomas "Tad" Lincoln., Sheila A. Wise
A Study In Nineteenth-Century American Costumes Based On Mary Todd Lincoln And Thomas "Tad" Lincoln., Sheila A. Wise
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An interest in nineteenth century history led to a desire to study the construction of American garments during this period. The historical figures, Mary Todd Lincoln, and Thomas “Tad” Lincoln, her son were selected as the basis of a study of mid-Victorian costume pattern-making and construction.
The main goal in pursuing this project was to gain a better understanding of the historical zeitgeist of the period and the pattern making and construction of American women’s, and children’s nineteenth century garments. The objectives of the thesis were to: 1) study, organize and research what Americans wore in the mid-Victorian era; 2) …

The Role Of Heat Shock Proteins In Skeletal Muscle Adaptation To Resistance Training In Young And Old Rats., Zsolt Murlasits
The Role Of Heat Shock Proteins In Skeletal Muscle Adaptation To Resistance Training In Young And Old Rats., Zsolt Murlasits
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Heat shock proteins (HSP's) are expressed in response to various stressors, such as physical exercise, therefore this study investigated the role of these proteins in skeletal muscle remodeling in response to resistance training. First, we determined the time course of HSP response as a result of a single bout of damaging contractions characterized by non-recoverable force deficit. The next study investigated HSP expression in 3 month old and 30 month old rats in response to a 4.5-week, chronic resistance training program that was designed to elicit muscle hypertrophy. Moreover, we analyzed the gene expression of four hsp70 genes to determine …

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications
Purpose. This study was conducted to determine if tactile sensitivity varies in dental hygiene students who use the ultrasonic scaler, as compared to those who scale with hand-activated instruments.
Methods. A two-group, randomized subjects, pretest-posttest design was carried out mid-semester for five weeks on 40 first-year dental hygiene students who met the inclusion criteria of this study and who agreed to participate. A convenience sample of 40 consenting, first-year dental hygiene students were randomly assigned to one of two groups (experimental or control). After establishing a baseline tactile sensitivity score with the Vibratory Sensory Analyzer (VSA), experimental group subjects used …

Child Abuse And Crime: Testing In The "Cycle Of Violence" Theory, Melanie A. Cox
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study of Child Abuse and Neglect: Testing in the "Cycle of Violence" Theory, is a demonstration of Applied Social Research in partial fulfillment of a master's degree in Sociology. It examines the Cycle of Violence theory by looking at two groups of children: an abuse/neglect group and a control group. It tests the likelihood of the abuse/neglect group to commit a crime in adulthood i.e., property crime, person crime, or public morality; while controlling for race, sex and type of abuse. Also, the odds of gender and race of the children in the abuse/neglect group, becoming a criminal offender …

Advocates Should Use Applicable International Standards To Address Violations Of Undocumented Migrant Workers' Rights In The United States, Connie De La Vega, Conchita Lozano-Batista
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
As the economic gap between rich and poor countries continues to grow, those living in poor countries migrate to richer countries to survive. Migrants who succeed in completing the journey to receiving countries are often subjected to human rights violations in the workplace. More particularly, the human rights violations encompass violations of the right to organize in order to be free from exploitative conditions, the right to equality before the law, and the right to legal recourse. This article will provide migrant rights advocates in the U.S. with international legal standards that can be used to address domestic human rights …
Inadequate And Inappropriate Mental Health Treatment And Minority Overrepresentation In The Juvenile Justice System, Kasey Corbit
Inadequate And Inappropriate Mental Health Treatment And Minority Overrepresentation In The Juvenile Justice System, Kasey Corbit
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
Not only are minority youth at greater risk for mental illness, they are more likely to be funneled into the juvenile justice system because of untreated symptoms of mental illness. This is because minority youth are less likely to be insured at the same rates as their white peers and more likely to be perceived as aggressive or dangerous when exhibiting symptoms of a mental health problem. California voters may have created a possible solution to this situation by approving Proposition 63, now known as the "Mental Health Services Act," which requires California counties to create innovative solutions to addressing …
Bridging The Federalism Gap: Procedural Due Process And Race Discrimination In A Devolved Welfare System, Risa E. Kaufman
Bridging The Federalism Gap: Procedural Due Process And Race Discrimination In A Devolved Welfare System, Risa E. Kaufman
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
As recent Supreme Court decisions limit the power of the federal government to legislate and the federal courts to provide redress in areas such as civil rights, Congress is devolving significant power to states and localities to create and implement poverty-related programs. The discretion and authority that is further devolved to local caseworkers and administrators can be tainted with racial bias, raising the risk of and resulting in a disparate impact on people of color. Individuals may thus face a greater risk of race discrimination within the welfare system with fewer statutory protections available to challenge such discrimination. This article …

Attitudes Toward A Presumed Consent Organ Donation System, Lisa Chan, Justin Cottrell, Pamela Denny-Griffith, Debra Roth, Nora Stephany
Loma Linda University Research Reports
Purpose: Obtaining consent for post-mortem organ donation is a complicated process, and the current system for obtaining consent has not been very effective in procuring sufficient transplantable organs for the current demand. A streamlined method of organ procurement, such as presumed consent, is needed to simplify this process and increase the number of available organs for donation. The purpose of this descriptive study was to evaluate the public's attitudes toward a presumed consent system of organ donation. Methods: A convenience sample of275 adults, aged 18 years or older, was recruited from public establishments in California. Subjects were required to understand, …
