I Connect Therefore I Am: Connectivity And Networking In Bodies, Technologies, Communities, And Selves, Anthony Lambert Jan 2005

I Connect Therefore I Am: Connectivity And Networking In Bodies, Technologies, Communities, And Selves, Anthony Lambert

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The notion of connection refers to both metaphorical and material practices informing our understandings of the flows of energy and information within human bodies, communities, geographies, and technological networks. Cranny-Francis offers a definition of connection which accounts for the term's significance in the contexts of both Cultural Studies and multimedia literacy:

It refers to the ways in which texts generate meanings through their relationship with other texts, to the development of multimedia technologies that are characterized by their connectivity (the web, the net), and to the ways in which meanings are generated crucially by the connection between texts …

Hydrodynamics Of Marine Macroalgae: Biotic And Physical Determinants Of Drag, Michael Louis Boller Jan 2005

Hydrodynamics Of Marine Macroalgae: Biotic And Physical Determinants Of Drag, Michael Louis Boller

Open Access Dissertations

The drag generated by breaking waves is one of the primary determinants of the distribution and abundance of organisms in the wave-swept rocky intertidal. Drag on macroalgae is modified by three main biological factors: morphology, reconfiguration and the surrounding canopy. These studies investigated the interplay among these factors by defining a mechanistic model of reconfiguration, examining the effects of morphological and material variation on reconfiguration, and measuring the effects of the canopy on hydrodynamic forces in situ. In Manuscript I, reconfiguration in Chondrus crispus was examined by direct measurement of changes in size, shape, and drag of individuals in a …

The Impact Of A Parasitic Gill Copepod On The Demography Of A Reef Fish Host, Rachel Jeanne Mahr Petrik-Finley Jan 2005

The Impact Of A Parasitic Gill Copepod On The Demography Of A Reef Fish Host, Rachel Jeanne Mahr Petrik-Finley

Open Access Dissertations

I examined the demographic impacts of the parasitic copepod Pharodes tortugensis that infects the gill cavities of small reef-associated fish. Laboratory and observational field studies were used to address questions concerning the distribution of the parasite in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), the physical damage and differences in body condition, growth and mortality caused by the parasite. Transmission of the parasite in a free living host population was examined using spatial analysis. P. tortugensis was found infecting three congeneric gobies in the BVI: bridled gobies, Coryphopterus glaucofraenum, colon gobies, C. dicrus, and palid gobies, C. eidolon. During 2001-2004, the parasite …

Cost-Effective Land Development With A Spatially Realistic Ecosystem Constraint, Dana Marie Bauer Jan 2005

Cost-Effective Land Development With A Spatially Realistic Ecosystem Constraint, Dana Marie Bauer

Open Access Dissertations

Exurban communities at the urban-rural fringe are increasingly experiencing conflict as conservationists and developers compete for a limited quantity of land. The study presented here developed a spatially-realistic conceptual framework that combines metapopulation theory, landscape ecology, land-use planning, and resource economics in order to determine the socially-desired allocation of development and preservation across an exurban landscape. The problem is one in which a social planner (e.g., town planner or regional planning council) maximizes the benefits from development subject to an ecosystem constraint that guarantees the socially-determined long-term probability of metapopulation persistence for one or more target species. Sensitivity analysis highlights …

Involvement Of Transcription Factors In Cadmium-Induced Apoptosis And Cell Cycle Arrest In Rat Kidney Cells, Jianxun Xie Jan 2005

Involvement Of Transcription Factors In Cadmium-Induced Apoptosis And Cell Cycle Arrest In Rat Kidney Cells, Jianxun Xie

Open Access Dissertations

Cadmium (Cd) may induce renal toxicity by modifying the activity of oxidative stress sensitive transcription factors that are responsible for regulating apoptotic gene expression and the genes that modulate the cell cycle. The present study was designed to elucidate the involvement of two such transcription factors, NF-κB and p53, in Cd-induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. Cells from a normal rat kidney epithelial cell line, NRK-52E, were incubated with CdCl2 for 5h and maintained in Cd-free medium for an additional 12h. The DNA binding activity of NF-κB was decreased by Cd in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Pretreatment of the …

Research Implications In The Prevention Of Child Abuse And Neglect, Jeanette Harder

Social Work Faculty Publications

Child abuse and neglect is a problem of vast proportions. Research on the effectiveness of child abuse and neglect prevention programs is critical for the provision of effective and efficient services. This paper provides a critical analysis of the research methodologies on child abuse and neglect prevention programs at the secondary and tertiary levels, as represented in the empirical literature. The paper begins by outlining the levels of prevention, and by describing child abuse and neglect prevention programs, as published in the empirical literature. This paper then goes on to describe and analyze the research conducted on these programs, to …

Conversion From Laparoscopic To Open Cholecystectomy: Multivariate Analysis Of Preoperative Risk Factors, M Tayeb, S A. Raza, M R. Khan, R Azami Jan 2005

Conversion From Laparoscopic To Open Cholecystectomy: Multivariate Analysis Of Preoperative Risk Factors, M Tayeb, S A. Raza, M R. Khan, R Azami

Department of Surgery Docs

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the gold standard in the treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis. Some patients require conversion to open surgery and several preoperative variables have been identified as risk factors that are helpful in predicting the probability of conversion. However, there is a need to devise a risk-scoring system based on the identified risk factors to (a) predict the risk of conversion preoperatively for selected patients, (b) prepare the patient psychologically, (c) arrange operating schedules accordingly, and (d) minimize the procedure-related cost and help overcome financial constraints, which is a significant problem in developing countries.AIM: This study was aimed …

State Legislation And Human Trafficking: Helpful Or Harmful?, Stephanie Richard Jan 2005

State Legislation And Human Trafficking: Helpful Or Harmful?, Stephanie Richard

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Human trafficking is the modern day form of slavery. Despite the fact that thousands of people are trafficked into the United Sates each year, the majority of U.S. citizens are not aware of the nature and extent of this problem. In 2000, the U.S. government passed the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act (VTVPA) to combat this grave human rights abuse. This federal legislation takes a comprehensive approach to addressing the problem of human trafficking in the United States by acknowledging that effective prosecution cannot occur without safeguards and benefits for trafficking victims. To this end, the VTVPA enumerates …

State Sentencing Policy And New Prison Admissions, Ben Trachtenberg Jan 2005

State Sentencing Policy And New Prison Admissions, Ben Trachtenberg

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

As the academy's focus has turned to sentencing in the wake of Blakely v. Washington and United States v. Booker, most commentators have continued their benign neglect of actual sentencing practices as they occur in state courts, not to mention whether and how such policies are effective in achieving the goals of criminal justice.

This Note examines trends in state sentencing policies and prison populations from the perspective of a would-be state reformer hoping to decrease her state's prison budget. Economic pressures, efficiency arguments, and social justice claims have combined to cause some states to desire lower prison populations, …

Toward A More Equitable Approach To Causation In Veterinary Malpractice Actions, Jayne De Young Jan 2005

Toward A More Equitable Approach To Causation In Veterinary Malpractice Actions, Jayne De Young

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The legal and economic barriers to veterinary malpractice cases are significant. Potential plaintiffs are often discouraged from pursuing their claims because of the very limited potential for significant damages and the difficulty of proving causation. This Note advocates a burden-shifting approach to the causation element of veterinary malpractice. It commences with an overview of some of the different methods by which animal guardians have sought redress for the injury or death of an animal while under the care of a veterinarian. This overview is followed by a detailed look at the elements of veterinary malpractice. Next, the recordkeeping standards in …

The Constitutionally Inspired Approaches To Police Accountability For Violence Against Women In The U.S. And South Africa: Conservation Versus Transformation, Christopher J. Roederer

School of Law Faculty Publications

In this last term, the highest courts in the U.S. and South Africa, respectively, the United States Supreme Court in Town of Castle Rock, Colorado v. Gonzales and the South African Constitutional Court in N.K. v. Minister of Safety and Security, overturned decisions from their appellate courts, the Tenth Circuit and the Supreme Court of Appeals. … This article is not primarily concerned with a comparison of the doctrinal nuances of these three cases, or of the respective constitutional mechanisms that aided the courts in coming to their decisions. This article examines the comparison, or rather, the sharp contrast between …
