English Language Learners In The Integrated Middle School Science Classroom, Julie A. Fee
English Language Learners In The Integrated Middle School Science Classroom, Julie A. Fee
Graduate Research Papers
This paper will answer three questions relating to limited English-proficiency students. First, what historical changes have occurred to improve education for the LEP student? Second, what information do teachers with adolescent LEP students, especially students who have recently immigrated, need in order to run a happy and successful class? Last, what strategies and philosophies should be used to help ESL students compete academically with their American born classmates?
Using Web-Based Material To Support Secondary Science Curriculum, Ghadeer Filimban
Using Web-Based Material To Support Secondary Science Curriculum, Ghadeer Filimban
Graduate Research Papers
Web-based materials have introduced a new way of supporting students' learning and teachers' knowledge of the secondary science curriculum. However it is difficult to know which materials to use and how to use them. This review discussed some of the methods for teaching science, web-based materials that support these methods, how the Internet can add to teachers' knowledge, and some negative effects of using this technology. This review shows how teachers can integrate web-based materials into their teaching strategies, and can help teachers who have integrated them to be aware of the negatives of using the Internet in the classroom. …
Catholic Saints: An Exploration And Inspiration In Faith, Therese Drey
Catholic Saints: An Exploration And Inspiration In Faith, Therese Drey
Graduate Research Papers
During the researcher's career as a religion teacher and librarian she found very few books for primary age students about the lives of the saints. The purpose of this research project was to write an age-appropriate illustrated biography about the life of St. Therese of Liseuex. The format will include events from the life of Therese Martin from her birth, through her entrance into the Carmelite Convent until her death at twenty-four. This book can serve as a prototype for similar books about other saints for the same audience. The targeted audience for this project is primary students in Catholic …
An In-Situ Capping Design For The Remediation Of Petroleum Contaminated Sediments, Melanie Krystle Harris
An In-Situ Capping Design For The Remediation Of Petroleum Contaminated Sediments, Melanie Krystle Harris
LSU Master's Theses
Historical disposal practices used by oil companies have caused the accumulation of contaminated sediments in their nearby lakes and ponds. These companies are now faced with the challenge of remediating the bodies of water that contain these contaminated sediments. The contaminants that remain in the sediment continue to pose a threat to human health and the environment. For example, high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are still present in the bottom sediments can have toxic effects on aquatic life. One form of remediation for this problem is In-Situ Capping (ISC), which is defined as a method whereby material …
Mordred: Treachery, Transference, And Border Pressure In British Arthurian Romance, George Gregory Molchan
Mordred: Treachery, Transference, And Border Pressure In British Arthurian Romance, George Gregory Molchan
LSU Master's Theses
This study focuses on the question of how Mordred comes to be portrayed as a traitor within the British Arthurian context. Chapter 1 introduces the question of Mordred’s treachery. Chapter 2 charts Mordred’s origins and development in Welsh and British literature. Chapter 3 focuses on the themes of unity, kinship, loyalty, adultery, and incest that emerge in connection with Mordred’s character. Chapter 4 deals with the idea that Mordred’s treacherous characteristics have been transferred upon him in the course of the British Arthurian narrative’s development. Chapter 5 discusses the possibility that Mordred’s development is in part due to Geoffrey of …
Identification Of 'Structural Alerts' And Associated Mechanisms Of Action Of Mammary Gland Carcinogens In Female Rodents, Shanna Tommika Moss
Identification Of 'Structural Alerts' And Associated Mechanisms Of Action Of Mammary Gland Carcinogens In Female Rodents, Shanna Tommika Moss
LSU Master's Theses
A new structure-activity relationship (SAR) approach to modeling was utilized to study mammary gland carcinogens. A set of chemicals tested for mammary tumorigenesis that have been analyzed in the Carcinogenic Potency Database (CPDB) were subjected to several computational analyses in an attempt to predict each chemical’s carcinogenic potential. A total of six learning sets (rat and mouse mammary gland carcinogen, CPDB rat and mouse, and female-specific rodent models) were developed and validated using a SAR modeling algorithm called categorical-SAR (cat-SAR). The predictive cat-SAR program evaluates active and inactive compounds of known biological activity and predicts their biological activity from this …
Sufficient To Make Heaven Weep: The American Army In The Mexican War, Brian M. Mcgowan
Sufficient To Make Heaven Weep: The American Army In The Mexican War, Brian M. Mcgowan
LSU Master's Theses
The Mexican War, 1846-1848, has often been overlooked in American history. Scholars have been more interested in assigning blame for the conflict, or assessing the role played by the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in the coming of the Civil War. Only recently have scholars made any attempt to understand the motivations and attitudes brought to Mexico by American soldiers. This thesis focuses on how the racial and religious attitudes of American soldiers during the war were an implementation of the nationalism inherent in Manifest Destiny. Americans used their perceived racial and religious superiority to further the goals of Manifest Destiny. Mexico …
Exploring Committee Outliers In A Weak Party State Legislature: The Louisiana House, 2000-2003, Trisha Mari Sandahl
Exploring Committee Outliers In A Weak Party State Legislature: The Louisiana House, 2000-2003, Trisha Mari Sandahl
LSU Master's Theses
Studies on the role of committees in legislatures have focused primarily on the U.S. Congress. In this study I expand on these studies by determining whether or not the distributive, informational, or major party cartel theory used to explain the role of committees at the national level can be extended to the state level; i.e. the Louisiana house legislature. Hypotheses are tested by using roll call votes in the Louisiana House for the years 2000-2003. This study finds substantial support for the informational theory and minimal support for the distributive and major party cartel theories in the Louisiana House legislature.

A Programmable Cmos Decimator For Sigma-Delta Analog-To-Digital Converter And Charge Pump Circuits, Raghavendra Reddy Anantha
LSU Master's Theses
PROGRAMMABLE DECIMATOR FOR SIGMA-DELTA ANALOG-TO-DIGITAL CONVERTER: In this work a programmable decimator design has been presented in 1.5 μm n-well CMOS process for integration with an existing modulator to form a sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The decimator is implemented using a second order Cascaded Integrator Comb (CIC) filter and can be programmed to work with two different oversampling ratios of 64 and 16. The input to the decimator is provided from a first order modulator. With oversampling ratios of 64 and 16, an output resolution of 10-bit and 7-bit, respectively are achieved for the ADC. The ADC can be operated …

A Compilation Of Homologous Cancer-Related Genes In Humans And Dogs, Julie Susan Brown
A Compilation Of Homologous Cancer-Related Genes In Humans And Dogs, Julie Susan Brown
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this study was to find out if spontaneously arising point mutations occurred in canine e-kit and if these mutations contributed to the development of mast cell tumors in dogs. Specimens were collected from 11 dogs after tumors had been surgically removed or the dog had died. The e-kit DNA was amplified using PCR, and the previously established point mutations were searched for (London et al., 1999). The point mutations found in human mast cell lines were not detected in the canine e-kit DNA, but new mutations were observed. These new mutations, observed in 50% of the tumors, …
Lawyers As Upholders Of Human Dignity (When They Aren't Busy Assaulting It), David Luban
Lawyers As Upholders Of Human Dignity (When They Aren't Busy Assaulting It), David Luban
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
David Luban argues in this lecture that the moral foundation of the lawyer's profession lies in the defense of human dignity-and the chief moral danger facing the profession arises when lawyers assault human dignity rather than defend it. The concept of human dignity has a rich philosophical tradition, with some philosophers identifying human dignity as a metaphysical property of individuals-a property such as having a soul, or possessing autonomy. Luban argues instead that human dignity is a relational property of "the dignifier" and "the dignified," emphasizing that assaulting human dignity humiliates the victim. Lawyers honor the human dignity of others …
Adoption Notices To Genetic Fathers: No To Scarlet Letters, Yes To Good Faith Cooperation, Jeffrey A. Parness
Adoption Notices To Genetic Fathers: No To Scarlet Letters, Yes To Good Faith Cooperation, Jeffrey A. Parness
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
American courts and legislatures have struggled to define the participation rights of genetic fathers in governmental adoption schemes for infants born to unwed mothers as a result of consensual sexual intercourse. Federal constitutional privacy interests in both paternity opportunity and childrearing compel a certain level of genetic father participation. However, excessive levels of participation undermine the goals of swift, final, and inexpensive adoptions, as well as deny some maternal preferences. The difficulties in balancing genetic father participation with competing interests are well illustrated by recent developments in Florida. There, the so-called "Scarlet Letter" law of 2001 (effectively branding women as …

Status And Trends In Water Quality And Living Resources In The Virginia Chesapeake Bay: Rappahannock River (1985-2003), Daniel M. Dauer, Harold G. Marshall, John R. Donat, Michael F. Lane, Suzanne C. Doughten, Frederick A. Hoffman
Status And Trends In Water Quality And Living Resources In The Virginia Chesapeake Bay: Rappahannock River (1985-2003), Daniel M. Dauer, Harold G. Marshall, John R. Donat, Michael F. Lane, Suzanne C. Doughten, Frederick A. Hoffman
Status and Trends for Virginia Chesapeake Bay
The Virginia Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries continue to show some environmental trends indicating progress toward restoration of a more balanced and healthy ecosystem. However, the Bay system remains degraded and some areas and indicators show continuing degradation. Progress in reducing nutrient inputs has made demonstrable improvements and we expect that continued progress toward nutrient reduction goals, along with appropriate fisheries management and chemical contaminant controls, will result in additional improvements to the Bay. Findings from the last 18 years of the monitoring programs are highlighted below. In 1995, the Virginia DEQ instituted changes to its analytical techniques for …

Beyond 'Hot Lips' And 'Big Nurse': Creative Writing And Nursing, Sandra Young
Beyond 'Hot Lips' And 'Big Nurse': Creative Writing And Nursing, Sandra Young
English Faculty Publications
This essay describes a special topics creative writing course designed for nursing students, and argues that creative writing strategies work to improve nurses' compositional skills. Also discussed are other potential benefits from creatively writing patients' lives, notably, the blending of arts and sciences, and the ways in which medical schools are encouraging their students to study the humanities, especially literature and creative writing. The essay includes student creative writing samples.
The essay also discusses the depiction of nurses in popular culture. M*A*S*H*, Richard Hooker’s black comedy about the antics of doctors and nurses during the Korean War, gave us “Hot …
Assessing Demographic Changes And Income Inequalities: A Case Study Of West Virginia, Yohannes G. Hailu, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Randall Jackson
Assessing Demographic Changes And Income Inequalities: A Case Study Of West Virginia, Yohannes G. Hailu, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Randall Jackson
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
The study examines the trends in demographic changes and income inequalities in West Virginia from 1990 to 2000. The relationship between economic growth and income inequality is tested using a system of equations model and county level data. The empirical results indicate that except for 65 years and above age group, income inequality increased in all other age groups. The highest increase was in the age group under 25 years and those 35 to 44 years. Using 3-Stage-Least-Squares estimations, the endogenous dependent variable per capita income growth was positively related with population and employment growth, but it is significantly and …
Loglinear Residual Tests Of Moran’S I Autocorrelation: An Application To Kentucky Breast Cancer Data, Ge Lin, Tonglin Zhang
Loglinear Residual Tests Of Moran’S I Autocorrelation: An Application To Kentucky Breast Cancer Data, Ge Lin, Tonglin Zhang
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
Spatial regressions have been widely used, but their use with the permutation tests of residuals either in linear or loglinear models is rarely seen. In the present study, we have linked the Cliff-Ord permutation test of Moran’s I on linear regression errors to loglinear regression residuals under asymptotic normality. We devised both Pearson residual Moran’s IP R and deviance residual Moran’s IDR tests and applied them to a set of log-rate models for early stage and late-stage breast cancer together with socioeconomic and access-to-care data in Kentucky. The results showed that socioeconomic and access-to-care variables were sufficient to account for …
Cross-Border Shopping And The Sales Tax: A Reexamination Of Food Purchases In West Virginia, Mehmet Serkan Tosun, Mark Skidmore
Cross-Border Shopping And The Sales Tax: A Reexamination Of Food Purchases In West Virginia, Mehmet Serkan Tosun, Mark Skidmore
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
In this paper we present new evidence of cross-border shopping in response to sales taxation. While several instructive studies provide estimates of the cross-border shopping effect, we utilize a unique opportunity to evaluate the effect of a large discrete change in sales tax policy. Using county level data on food income and sales tax data for West Virginia over the 1982-2000 period we estimate that for every one-percentage point increase in the county relative price ratio due to sales tax change, the per capita food income decreases by about 0.7 percent. Our estimates indicate that food sales fell in West …
The Role Of Welfare And Space In The Migration Of The Poor, Brian Cushing
The Role Of Welfare And Space In The Migration Of The Poor, Brian Cushing
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
This study investigates whether interstate differences in welfare benefits affected destination choices of low-income households in the United States during the 1985-90 period. It considers place-to-place migration decisions of poor single-parent females within a conditional logit framework. The research develops an array of variables that add a substantial spatial component to the analysis. The empirical results reconcile conclusions of recent academic literature with the views of state policy officials, but in a somewhat unexpected way. This study finds only modest evidence of a welfare magnet effect, and only for contiguous states. On the other hand, the study strongly confirms the …
A Neighborhood Study Regarding The Relationship Between Social Identity And Street Corner Drinking, Irene Hoskin Heard
A Neighborhood Study Regarding The Relationship Between Social Identity And Street Corner Drinking, Irene Hoskin Heard
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study offered valuable insight into a sub-cultural setting where heavy drinking on the street-corner occurs among a group of African-American men. Data were collected via participant observation, with two primary goals: first, to study street-corner drinking within its larger contextual settings--the family, the neighborhood and larger society--in order to more fully contextually ground this practice; second, to describe the many facets of the identity of the man who drinks on the street corner, rather than view him only as a drinking man. It became evident that the corner drinking men could be considered heavy or problem drinkers, yet ones …
The Fear Of Death And The Fear Of Dying: Possible Barriers To Altruistic Behavior, Jennifer Haskin Corwin
The Fear Of Death And The Fear Of Dying: Possible Barriers To Altruistic Behavior, Jennifer Haskin Corwin
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Research in the study of the fear of death and dying and the study of altruism implies that there is a dynamic relationship between the two fields. Rarely, if ever, has a direct connection been made. This study is an effort to further explore the relationship that exists between the fear of death and dying, altruistic behavior, self-esteem, and perceptions of a common humanity. Through the synthesis of these four key social psychological concepts, a theoretical model was developed and tested.
Through the examination and statistical analysis of quantitative data and the systematic evaluation of interview data, several connections between …
Long-Term Outcomes In Animal Hoarding Cases, Colin Berry, Gary Patronek, Randall Lockwood
Long-Term Outcomes In Animal Hoarding Cases, Colin Berry, Gary Patronek, Randall Lockwood
Animal Law Review
Animal hoarding is a form of abuse that affects thousands of animals each year, yet little is known about how cases are best resolved, the effectiveness of prosecution, and how sentences relate to the severity of the offense. This lack of information has hampered effective resolution and the prevention of recidivism. This study obtained information about the hoarder, animals, charges, prosecution, sentencing, and recidivism for fifty-six cases identified through media reports.
International Animal Rights: Speciesism And Exclusionary Human Dignity, Kyle Ash
International Animal Rights: Speciesism And Exclusionary Human Dignity, Kyle Ash
Animal Law Review
The primary goal of this paper is to act as a heuristic device, to suggest an unconventional but practical perspective on the evolution of international law. Upon surveying discourse on the history of international law, texts of treaties, and declarations and writings of influential philosophers of law and morality, an antiquated perspective of humanity is apparent. A convention in international law, and a reflection of a common idea which feeds the foreboding trend of how humans relate to the planet, treats humanity as distinctively separate from the Earth’s biodiversity. Though environmental law is beginning to recognize the necessity of conserving …
Chinese Endangered Species At The Brink Of Extinction: A Critical Look At The Current Law And Policy In China, Charu Sharma
Chinese Endangered Species At The Brink Of Extinction: A Critical Look At The Current Law And Policy In China, Charu Sharma
Animal Law Review
The People’s Republic of China harbors a vast number of plant and animal species, but those species have long been threatened by a thriving illegal trade. China became a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in 1981 and has since passed a number of wildlife protection laws and regulations in an effort to curb the illegal trade and begin revitalizing some of its nearly-extinct animal populations. This article critically examines China’s legislation and judicial decisions, concluding that much work remains to be done to protect endangered species in China.
Caging Animal Advocates' Political Freedoms: The Unconstitutionality Of The Animal And Ecological Terrorism Act, Andrew N. Ireland Moore
Caging Animal Advocates' Political Freedoms: The Unconstitutionality Of The Animal And Ecological Terrorism Act, Andrew N. Ireland Moore
Animal Law Review
The animal advocacy movement is facing another obstacle, resulting from the creation of the Animal and Ecological Terrorism Act (AETA). The Act seeks to create harsh penalties including a Terrorist Registry for acts performed by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and ALF-type actors. In addition, the proposed legislation will affect animal advocates not involved with the ALF. However, the model legislation, as written, must pass Constitutional scrutiny. This paper argues that the proposed Animal and Ecological Terrorism Act is unconstitutional due to its infringement on the First Amendment, its overbreadth, and its vagueness.
