The Great Becoming, Sara L. Blackwell Jan 2005

The Great Becoming, Sara L. Blackwell

Theses

Few questions stir as much curiosity and controversy as the question of how and why did man evolve. This culminating project strives to explore that issue creatively. Using a combination of religious overtones, myths and legends, and imagination, this project strives to be an original creation myth- a piece of fiction that answers how civilization, as we know it today, began. The story bas not been written to replace commonly accepted religious beliefs. Rather, it has been written to complement them, to question them, and to explore the very beginnings of religion itself.

The introduction to this project focuses on …

Guardianship And Severely Chronically Mentally Ill Adults: A Measure Of Advantages And Disadvantageous In A Pair-Matched Records Review, James H. Hoerchler

Theses

This thesis examined adults with chronic severe mental illness and the use of legal guardianship executed to protect them from harming themselves or others, while attempting to improve their overall quality of life.

The earliest manifestation of mental health law appeared in the Roman Empire. The Romans established the legal use of surrogates to handle the property and commercial affairs of disabled citizens. By the sixteenth century England had developed standards of supervision by which a guardian might supervise a disabled person. The first guardianship recorded in America was decided under English law in 1637 in Jamestown, Virginia (Goldstein, Alan …

Competing Perspectives During Organizational Socialization On The Role Of Certified Athletic Trainers In High School Settings, James M. Mensch, Candice Crews, Murrary F. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

When certified athletic trainers (ATCs) enter a workplace, their potential for professional effectiveness is affected by a number of factors, including the individual's ability to put acquired knowledge, skills, and attitudes into practice. This ability may be influenced by the preconceived attitudes and expectations of athletes, athletes' parents, athletic directors, physical therapists, physicians, and coaches.

Objective: To examine the perspectives of high school coaches and ATCs toward the ATC's role in the high school setting by looking at 3 questions: (1) What are coaches' expectations of ATCs during different phases of a sport season? (2) What do ATCs perceive their …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate the toxic effects of the human immunodeficiency virus- reverse transcriptase (HIV-RT) inhibitor 2-phenoxymethyl-5-chlorobenzimidazole on rat liver at the light microscopic level to gain an insight into possible effects in human subjects. To do this, an animal experimental model was constructed and rats were divided into single injected rat (SIR) and multiple injected rat (MIR) groups, as well as single and multiple solvent dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) injected controls and an untreated control. Cellular heterogeneity was observed in a non-prominent way in the SIR group (prominent in only one area) and very prominently in the …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The central nervous system may modulate many aspects of inflammation through alterations of the autonomic nervous system and/or the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The aim of present study was to examine the impact of controllable acute stress on the course of experimental colitis and to elucidate the roles of serotonin (5-HT) and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in the central modulation of the stress. In the stress group, acute electric shock (AES; 0.3-0.6 mA) was applied, while in the central agonist group, rats were injected with central 5-HT agonist (400 µg/kg). In the antagonist groups, 10 min before the application of AES or …

Estimation Of Sensitivity And Specificity For Clustered Data, Yasemi̇n Genç, Derya Gökmen, Ersöz Tüccar, Banu Yağmurlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The most commonly used measurements for evaluating the accuracy of diagnostic tests in binary data are sensitivity and specificity. Sensitivity refers to the ability of a test to detect patients with some specific disease. Specificity describes how well test abnormality is restricted to those persons who have the disease in question. The variance estimators of these measurements are usually obtained using a binomial estimator, although there are several other methods. However, under certain conditions more than one observation can be taken from a subject and analyses are performed on these observations. This type of data structure is called "clustered data". …

The Level Of Ferritin In Diabetic And Nondiabetic Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction, Meral Mert, Müge Korkmaz, Mustafa Temi̇zel, Meti̇n Acar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

An elevated serum ferritin level is proposed as a risk factor for coronary heart disease. The role of diabetes mellitus on serum ferritin levels in myocardial infarction has recently been investigated. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of diabetes mellitus on serum ferritin levels in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). In this study, we studied patients (104 nondiabetic, 26 diabetic patients) with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). AMI was diagnosed according to typical clinical history, ECG changes and cardiac enzyme elevations. Blood samples for ferritin, iron and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and haemogram tests were …

Certain phenoxyacetate derivatives used as plant growth regulators act as plant hormones. 2,4-D dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid are widely used in vegetable growing, especially tomatoes, in our region. These phenoxyacetic acid compounds are a potential hazard for the environment. There are conflicting results and inconsistent data about these herbicides in the literature. This is the first report of genotoxicity of 4-CPA evaluated by sister chromatid exchange in human lymphocyte culture. No significant change was found in sister chromatid exchange frequency at the tested 4-CPA concentration.

Remifentanil Infusion And Paracervical Block Combination For Transvaginal Ultrasound Guided Oocyte Retrieval, Kadi̇r Kaya, Ertan Öztürk, Bi̇lge Tuncer, Berri̇n Günaydin

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The optimal anesthetic technique for transvaginal ultrasound guided oocyte retrieval (TUGOR) is not known. We present a case series of patients having TUGOR under intravenous remifentanil infusion and paracervical block (PCB). One hundred four unpremedicated patients were included in our study. After monitoring heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO_2) and end tidal CO_2 (ETCO_2), a remifentanil infusion of 0.25 µg kg^{-1} min^{-1} was started. PCB (10 ml 1% lidocaine) was performed under remifentanil infusion. As soon as the patient felt dizzy, the remifentanil infusion was decreased to 0.15 µg kg^{-1} min^{-1}. Sedation was evaluated according …
