Mercury Contamination From Historical Gold Mining In California, Charles N. Alpers, Michael P. Hunerlach, Jason T. May, Roger L. Hothem

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Mercury contamination from historical gold mines represents a potential risk to human health and the environment. This fact sheet provides background information on the use of mercury in historical gold mining and processing operations in California, with emphasis on historical hydraulic mining areas. It also describes results of recent USGS projects that address the potential risks associated with mercury contamination.

Miners used mercury (quicksilver) to recover gold throughout the western United States. Gold deposits were either hardrock (lode, gold-quartz veins) or placer (alluvial, unconsolidated gravels). Underground methods (adits and shafts) were used to mine hardrock gold deposits. Hydraulic, drift, or …

Draft Environmental Assessment For Umbrella Candidate Conservation Agreement With Assurances For Gunnison Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus Minimus) In Colorado, Connie Young-Dubovsky, Terry Ireland

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The purpose of this Environmental Assessment (EA) is to satisfy the National Environmental Policy Act requirements for a proposed action to implement an umbrella Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances (CCAA) with the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW). The purpose of the CCAA is to promote conservation of Gunnison sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus), a declining endemic of the sage-steppe community in Colorado and Utah. Two other alternatives are compared to the proposed action to assess whether the action can be implemented without significant effects to environmental resources in the area. About one-half of the Gunnison sage-grouse range occurs on non-Federal …

Auditory Brainstem Responses In The Eastern Screech Owl: An Estimate Of Auditory Thresholds, Elizabeth F. Brittan-Powell, Bernard Lohr, D. Caldwell Hahn, Robert J. Dooling

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The auditory brainstem response (ABR), a measure of neural synchrony, was used to estimate auditory sensitivity in the eastern screech owl (Megascops asio). The typical screech owl ABR waveform showed two to three prominent peaks occurring within 5 ms of stimulus onset. As sound pressure levels increased, the ABR peak amplitude increased and latency decreased. With an increasing stimulus presentation rate, ABR peak amplitude decreased and latency increased. Generally, changes in the ABR waveform to stimulus intensity and repetition rate are consistent with the pattern found in several avian families. The ABR audiogram shows that screech owls hear best between …

Plasmodium Vivax: Allele Variants Of The Mdr1 Gene Do Not Associate With Chloroquine Resistance Among Isolates From Brazil, Papua, And Monkey-Adapted Strains, Juliana Martha Sá, Takashi Nomura, Joana D'Arc Neves, J. Kevin Baird, Thomas E. Wellems, Hernando A. Del Portillo

United States Navy: Publications

We describe here the sequence of the Plasmodium vivax mdr1 gene from 10 different isolates differing in chloroquine sensitivity. The deduced amino acid sequence of PvMDR1 shares more than 70% similarity with other malarial MDR proteins and it displays consensus motifs of an ABC family transporter including two transmembrane domains and two ATP binding cassettes. Similarity and dendrogram analyses revealed that sequences could be grouped according to their geographical origin. Within each geographical group however, no correlation was found between chloroquine resistance and specific mutations.

Yellow Fever Vaccine: An Updated Assessment Of Advanced Age As A Risk Factor For Serious Adverse Events, Alena Y. Khromava, Rachel Barwick Eidex, Leisa H. Weld, Katrin S. Kohl, Robert D. Bradshaw, Robert T. Chen, Martin S. Cetron

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Since 1996, the scientific community has become aware of 14 reports of yellow fever vaccine (YEL)-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL-AVD) cases and four reports of YEL-associated neurotropic disease (YEL-AND) worldwide, changing our understanding of the risks of the vaccine. Based on 722 adverse event reports after YEL submitted to the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System in 1990–2002, we updated the estimates of the age-adjusted reporting rates of serious adverse events, YEL-AVD and YEL-AND.We found that the reporting rates of serious adverse events were significantly higher among vaccinees aged ≥60 years than among those 19–29 years of age (reporting rate ratio …

Factor Structure And Construct Validity Of The Anxiety Sensitivity Index Among Island Puerto Ricans, Jennifer A. Cintrón, Michele M. Carter, Sonia Suchday, Tracy Sbrocco, James Gray

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The factor structure and convergent and discriminant validity of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) were examined among a sample of 275 island Puerto Ricans. Results from a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) comparing our data to factor solutions commonly reported as representative of European American and Spanish populations indicated a poor fit. A subsequent exploratory factor analysis (EFA) indicated that a two-factor solution (Factor 1, Anxiety Sensitivity; Factor 2, Emotional Concerns) provided the best fit. Correlations between the ASI and anxiety measures were moderately high providing evidence of convergent validity, while correlations between the ASI and BDI were significantly lower providing …

Targeting Of Tsc13p To Nucleus–Vacuole Junctions: A Role For Very-Long-Chain Fatty Acids In The Biogenesis Of Microautophagic Vesicles, Erik Kvam, Kenneth Gable, Teresa M. Dunn, David S. Goldfarb Jan 2005

Targeting Of Tsc13p To Nucleus–Vacuole Junctions: A Role For Very-Long-Chain Fatty Acids In The Biogenesis Of Microautophagic Vesicles, Erik Kvam, Kenneth Gable, Teresa M. Dunn, David S. Goldfarb

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

TSC13 is required for the biosynthesis of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) in yeast. Tsc13p is a polytopic endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane protein that accumulates at nucleus–vacuole (NV) junctions, which are formed through Velcro-like interactions between Nvj1p in the perinuclear ER and Vac8p on the vacuole membrane. NV junctions mediate piecemeal microautophagy of the nucleus (PMN), during which bleb-like portions of the nucleus are extruded into invaginations of the vacuole membrane and degraded in the vacuole lumen. We report that Tsc13p is sequestered into NV junctions from the peripheral ER through Vac8p-independent interactions with Nvj1p. During nutrient limitation, Tsc13p is incorporated …

United States Army: Publications

The goal of the Malaria Vaccine Program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) is to develop a licensed multi-antigen, multi-stage vaccine against Plasmodium falciparum able to prevent all symptomatic manifestations of malaria by preventing parasitemia. A secondary goal is to limit disease in vaccinees that do develop malaria. Malaria prevention will be achieved by inducing humoral and cellular immunity against the pre-erythrocytic circumsporozoite protein (CSP) and the liver stage antigen-1 (LSA-1). The strategy to limit disease will target immune responses against one or more blood stage antigens, merozoite surface protein-1 (MSP-1) and apical merozoite antigen-1 (AMA-1). The …

Tribal Employment Separation: Tribal Law Enigma, Tribal Governance Paradox, And Tribal Court Conundrum, Matthew L.M. Fletcher Jan 2005

Tribal Employment Separation: Tribal Law Enigma, Tribal Governance Paradox, And Tribal Court Conundrum, Matthew L.M. Fletcher

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Each year, more and more people--Indians and non-Indians--are employed by Indian Tribes and Tribally-chartered organizations. However, as Tribal employment grows, so do the problems associated with personnel disputes. Tribal employment is different than traditional corporate or even government employment because Tribal communities are incredibly close-knit and Tribal governments are very accountable to their constituents. Because of this dynamic, employment separations can create excessive difficulty within a Tribe. Many Tribal courts apply the principles of the Supreme Court's decision in Loudermill, granting terminated employees the right to both an administrative and judicial hearing. However, these processes can often be incredibly painful …

Out-Of-Feed Events In Grow-Finish Pigs: Causes And Consequences, Mike Brumm, Brian Richert, Jeremy Marchant-Forde, Ruth Marchant-Forde Jan 2005

Out-Of-Feed Events In Grow-Finish Pigs: Causes And Consequences, Mike Brumm, Brian Richert, Jeremy Marchant-Forde, Ruth Marchant-Forde

Nebraska Swine Reports

In theory, bulk bins and automated feed delivery systems assure an uninterrupted flow of feed to the feeder in swine grow-finish facilities. In practice, growing-finishing pigs have varying disruptions in feed availability, some of which may have serious consequences. While every swine grow-finish facility has occasional disruptions due to mechanical failures in the feed delivery system, there are additional disruptions due to human errors associated with keeping feed in the bulk bin and feed bridging associated with feed removal from the bin. Out-of-feed events are a known cause of ulcers in pigs and are suspected of being associated with increased …

Research Proposal Summary: Effects Of Nutrition During Gilt Development On Sow Lifetime Productivity Of Two Prolific Maternal Lines, Rodger K. Johnson, Phillip S. Miller Jan 2005

Research Proposal Summary: Effects Of Nutrition During Gilt Development On Sow Lifetime Productivity Of Two Prolific Maternal Lines, Rodger K. Johnson, Phillip S. Miller

Nebraska Swine Reports

A four-parity study is proposed to examine the effects of nutritional manipulation during gilt development on subsequent sow performance. Gilts will be selected from two genetic lines that are highly prolific, but differ in rate and composition of growth. During the development period (45 to 250 lb), gilts will be provided either; i) ad libitum access to feed, or ii) ad libitum access to feed until 120 days of age (180 lb) and 75% of ad libitum feed intake thereafter (until first post-pubertal estrus). Sow and litter performance criteria will be examined. In addition, the economics of sow productivity and …

Prrsv Negative Herds: A Survival Analysis, Locke Karriker, Ruby Destajo Jan 2005

Prrsv Negative Herds: A Survival Analysis, Locke Karriker, Ruby Destajo

Nebraska Swine Reports

Despite a significant body of research, interventions for PRRSV infection remain elusive. Traditional approaches to managing the risk of diseases have not been successful in many cases of PRRSV infection. While elimination of the virus from farms is possible, it is not without cost and re-infection is common. This survey sought to quantify the expected duration of PRRSV negative status on farms that were repopulated with PRRSV negative animals or had undergone a PRRSV elimination program. Results of 96 cases reveals a range of <1 to 312+ weeks duration of negative status. A survival analysis of 84 farms revealed a probability of surviving with negative status for two full years of 58.3% with a standard error of 11.5%. The probability of survival through 4 years was 42% with a standard error of 16%. A greater percentage of farms that were reinfected shared resources such as equipment, personnel, and/or vehicles with known positive farms. Positive farms also had a relatively shorter average distance to known positive farms than those remaining negative. The results of this study indicate that PRRSV-negative farms are not very likely to remain negative for a long duration given current technologies. Longer survival of negative status appears to be associated with greater distance from known positive farms and stricter biosecurity. Sharing of equipment and other resources as well as a closer distance to other farms should be considered risk factors that can lessen the probability of farms maintaining negative status.
