Nebraska Law Review

“Family” as a social entity has metamorphosed into various forms, expanding the boundaries of its definition beyond those that existed traditionally. The Nebraska Supreme Court’s opinion in Russell v. Bridgens illustrates Nebraska’s venture into the relatively uncharted territory of the legal relationships between same-sex parents and their children. This Note explores the law of second-parent adoption as it has developed among the states, the facts and opinions of Russell, and the doctrine of in loco parentis as applied by Nebraska and other state courts. This Note argues that, in light of the willingness of Russell’s concurring judges to …

Dead Men Telling Tales: A Policy- Based Proposal For Survivability Of Qui Tam Actions Under The Civil False Claims Act, Vickie Williams

Nebraska Law Review

More than a century after its birth as a fraud-fighting tool during wartime, the Civil False Claims Act continues to pique the imagination and fuel dreams of bounty and glory for both publicly anointed fraud-fighters and private persons who are authorized to sue on behalf of themselves and the Government under the Act’s unique qui tam provisions. Part II of this article discusses the current version of the Act and its evolution from its original 1863 version. Part III discusses the historical common-law test for determining whether an action based on a federal statute survives or abates upon the plaintiff’s …

Ducking Recusal: Justice Scalia's Refusal To Recuse Himself From Cheney V. United States District Court For The District Of Columbia, 541 U.S. 913 (2004), And The Need For A Unique Recusal Standard For Supreme Court Justices, Christopher Riffle

Nebraska Law Review

Vice President Dick Cheney was Justice Scalia's special guest on a duck-hunting trip, taken just a few weeks after the Supreme Court granted a writ of certiorari to hear a case in which the Vice President was a named party. An immediate and nationwide call went up for the Justice to recuse himself from the case, culminating in a motion for recusal filed by the Sierra Club. Justice Scalia's response to the Sierra Club's motion for recusal was a twenty-one page memorandum that dissected the motion. His response, though a compelling and thorough dismissal of the arguments raised by the …

Differential Effect Of Glutathione Depletion On Glycogenolysis In Isolated Rat Hepatocytes Mediated By A-Adrenoceptor Agonists And Glucagon, Mukadder Atmaca, Jeffrey R. Fry Jan 2005

Differential Effect Of Glutathione Depletion On Glycogenolysis In Isolated Rat Hepatocytes Mediated By A-Adrenoceptor Agonists And Glucagon, Mukadder Atmaca, Jeffrey R. Fry

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Glutathione (GSH) exerts a variety of cytoprotecive effects, but is readily depleted from cells under a variety of stressful stimuli. The impact of GSH depletion on receptor-mediated activity in rat hepatocytes has been studied with regard to glycogenolysis stimulated with a-adrenoceptor agonists or glucagon, which exert their actions through different signalling pathways. Depletion of GSH content (70%) by diethyl maleate had no effect on the redox status of the cells or on basal or glucagon-stimulated glycogenolysis, but significantly reduced the response to the a-adrenoceptor agonists adrenalin and phenylephrine. These results highlight the possible modulatory effects of GSH on receptor-mediated activity …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosomal aberration (CA) in peripheral lymphocytes have been widely used in assessing exposure to mutagens and carcinogens. One of the extensively studied genotoxins is benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). The aim of the present study was to examine the ability of BaP to induce different individual cytogenetic response measured by SCE and CA frequency. The possible influence of genetic polymorphism was also taken into account, by including donors representing positive or null glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) genotypes. SCEs and CAs were analyzed from 72-h whole-blood lymphocyte cultures of 16 GSTM1 positive and 15 GSTM1 null donors after treatment …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Recent technology enables the use of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma and serum for noninvasive prenatal genetic diagnosis. This study was designed to evaluate factors most likely to influence the success of a simple, cost efficient, reliable and replicable conventional PCR technique in the clinical routine of prenatal genetic diagnosis of selected cases. The results strongly suggest that DNA extraction and PCR cycle optimization are 2 major success-limiting steps and the maternal plasma is a better choice over serum for DNA extraction for such prenatal genetic diagnosis. In addition, the use of a ready-to-use PCR mixture containing heat-activated Taq …

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one of the main environmental pollutants in urban areas. Cytogenetic analysis of chromosomal aberrations is of great concern as they are involved in the mechanism of carcinogenesis. The aim of this study was to assess the genotoxic effect of occupational exposure to PAHs in a group of 30 Bulgarian traffic policemen compared to 30 office clerks. Structural and numerical chromosome aberrations were analyzed by the conventional method in 100 to 300 cells per person. The exposure assessment was performed by personal sampling of air in the respiratory area. PAHs were identified by high performance liquid …

Polarized Mueller Matrix Analytical Model For Glucose Measurement In Vitro, Shamaraz Firdous, Masroor Ikram

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this study we present a noninvasive and nonradioactive glucose in vitro measurement technique using the Mueller polarization analytical model. The glucose solution and aqueous humor phantoms are illuminated with a He-Ne (632.8 nm) laser. This in vitro study provides a base and reference data for in vivo eye glucose monitoring. The 16 Mueller polarization matrix element images give information about eye absorption and scattering, and changes in polarization patterns to measure glucose concentration. The interior part of the eye (aqueous humor) contains a birefringent scattering medium for glucose measurement. The Mueller matrix polarimetric technique for simultaneous extraction of rotating …
