A Study Of The Registered Nurse Labor Market: Wage, Job Satisfaction, And Labor Force Withdrawal, Li Li Jan 2005

A Study Of The Registered Nurse Labor Market: Wage, Job Satisfaction, And Labor Force Withdrawal, Li Li

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This paper examines the factors that explain differences in earnings among RN’s. In addition, it also looks at the factors that determine the level of job satisfaction among RN’s and examines the factors that determine the probability of leaving the nursing profession. The analysis of RN wage rates shows that nurses who have a 4-year college degree receive a wage premium. However, the results also show that the premium is reduced for nurses who are employed in hospitals. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that nursing wages are subject to monoposony power in a hospital setting. In fact, the …

Empirical And Theoretical Perspectives From Social Science On Gay Marriage And Child Custody Issues, Walter R. Schumm Jan 2005

Empirical And Theoretical Perspectives From Social Science On Gay Marriage And Child Custody Issues, Walter R. Schumm

St. Thomas Law Review

Research on lesbigay parenting issues is reviewed with an in-depth focus on a few examples of past research and a review of the merits of social science research cited recently by the American Civil Liberties Union in support of gay parenting rights. Those who have reviewed the literature have come to startling different conclusions. Neither side has fully grasped some of the limitations of certain key research studies. Some errors are such that one might wonder if peer review procedures had somehow failed. An analysis of a recent paper on same-gender sexual abuse reveals mixed findings. It appears that a …

Lawrence, Lofton, And Reasoned Judgment: On Who Can Adopt And Why, Mark Strasser Jan 2005

Lawrence, Lofton, And Reasoned Judgment: On Who Can Adopt And Why, Mark Strasser

St. Thomas Law Review

Recently, in Lofton v. Security of Department of Children & Family Services, the Eleventh Circuit upheld Florida's gay adoption ban. The opinion is important for a variety of reasons, not least of which is that it was issued after the United States Supreme Court had decided Lawrence v. Texas. The Lofton court's reading of Lawrence was so implausible that it would have been easy for the Supreme Court to have reversed Lofton, while nonetheless offering an analysis significantly narrower than Lawrence. Regrettably, the Supreme Court denied certiorari when the decision was appealed, so we will simply have to wait and …

New Federal And Provincial Personal Information Protection Legislation And Its Impact On Physicians And Public Hospitals, Evguania Prokopieva

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The focus of this article is to examine the implications of the new federal and Ontario personal data protection legislation for physicians and public hospitals. This article also inquires into whether the new legislation will contribute to the protection of patient privacy. By ‘‘physician’’ I mean a doctor in a broad sense – i.e., ‘‘a person who has been educated, trained, and licensed to practice the art and science of medicine’’. This will include family doctors, paediatricians, psychiatrists, surgeons, and other medical doctors covered by the Regulated Health Professions Act. By the term ‘‘public hospitals’’ I will refer to not-for-profit …

Group Spiritual Direction For Pastors In Sioux County, Iowa, Jeff L. Sajdak Jan 2005

Group Spiritual Direction For Pastors In Sioux County, Iowa, Jeff L. Sajdak

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The assumption is often made that seminary students and pastors are prepared to care for their own souls. It is assumed that they will be able to nurture their own spiritual formation, becoming conformed to the image of Christ for the sake of others. The reality is that pastors often do not have preparation to provide themselves with such care. Pastors will sometimes identify a longing for “something more” in their spiritual lives, without knowing exactly what they are seeking or how to gain it.

One resource that can promote effective Christian spiritual formation for pastors is spiritual direction. However, …

Cytokine Expression By T. Helper Cells Responding To Stress, Dina Zanetti Jan 2005

Cytokine Expression By T. Helper Cells Responding To Stress, Dina Zanetti

Master's Theses

Stress causes alterations to the immune system. These alterations have lead to increased susceptibility to antigens. The present study explores shifts in T helper (TH) cell balance (TH1 and TH2), through their cytokine expression. This study was performed in three phases, and focused mainly on animals subjected to a 10 day a chronic unpredictable stress paradigm. Phase one used ELISAs to confirm the cytokine profile produced from TH 1 and TH2 murine cell-lines. Phase two used SDS PAGE and Western Immunoblotting to show that splenocytes from Long Evan's Hooded rats subjected to the stress paradigm, had decreased in intercellular in …

Quantitative And Qualitative Assessment Of Groundwater Resources In Al-Khatim Area, Uae, Ahmed Khaled Othman

Accounting Dissertations

The UAE has achieved remarkable progress in transformation from separated small emirates to a modem union country with a high standard of living. The country is however, considered an extreme arid region. In spite of these harsh conditions, The UAE government has encouraged plantation in towns, villages and country side. This has led to sharp increase in the agricultural sector particularly during the last three decades. As the irrigated land kept increasing, there was a deep concern about the water demand and the impact of agriculture activities on groundwater systems. Al-Khatim area is considered one of the most

important agricultural …

Truth Or Conseqences In Legal Scholarship?, David Barnhizer Jan 2005

Truth Or Conseqences In Legal Scholarship?, David Barnhizer

Hofstra Law Review

There has been an erosion of the ideal of truth as a guiding force for what we do. This includes a dishonoring of the tradition of the truth-seeking function of scholars. For the university-based intellectual, including legal scholars, the problem with commitments to ends other than truth-seeking is that once we accept a mission distinct from the pursuit of truth and honest discourse, most of the remaining options are suspect - including falseness, hypocrisy, self-deception, subordination of self to a collective, profit, dogmatism, devotion to tradition, and propaganda.

Although what we intend by the idea of truth - legal, scientific, …

The Crimes Of Crime Labs, J. Herbie Difonzo Jan 2005

The Crimes Of Crime Labs, J. Herbie Difonzo

Hofstra Law Review

In November 2005, a man was convicted in New York City for a thirty-two-year-old rape. The circumstances were quite unusual, even for cold cases. The original 1974 trial had ended in a hung jury, and the defendant had jumped bail before his scheduled re-trial. He was apprehended in 2004 in Georgia on another charge, and a background check disclosed the open New York warrant. The crucial difference between the 1974 and 2005 trials was DNA evidence recovered from the underpants which the victim wore on the day of the crime, "found stuffed in the files in the Manhattan district attorney's …

The Consequences Of The Growth Of Health Insurance Premiums, Katherine Baicker, Amitabh Chandra Jan 2005

The Consequences Of The Growth Of Health Insurance Premiums, Katherine Baicker, Amitabh Chandra

Dartmouth Scholarship

n the United States, two-thirds of the non-elderly population is covered by employer- provided health insurance (EHI). According to a Kaiser Family Foundation national survey (2003), the cost of EHI has increased by over 59 percent since 2000 with no accompanying in- crease in the scale or scope of benefits. These increases in health insurance premiums may have significant effects on labor markets, including changes in the number of jobs, hours worked per employee, wages, and compensation packages. Indeed, it is possible that a significant portion of the increase in the uninsured population may be a consequence of employers shedding …
