Breeding Trouble: West Nile On The Willamette?, Merilee Karr

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

From the Roman aqueducts to Bonneville Dam, humans have built structures to moderate the extremes of natural water flow. Some of these structures, from Roman cisterns to the catch basins under modern city streets, have inadvertently supplied mosquitoes with the standing water in which they thrive and multiply. Even more mosquito habitat may have been created in the last decade by a change in the Clean Water Act. The original drive behind the Act, in 1972, was the elimination of point-source pollution: sewage and industrial discharge into waterways. In the 1990s new regulations aimed to prevent non-point-source pollution, due to …

Lifting The Pall Of Orthodoxy: The Need For Hearing A Multitude Of Tongues In And Beyond The Sexual Education Curricula At Public High Schools, Carlo A. Pedrioli Jan 2005

Lifting The Pall Of Orthodoxy: The Need For Hearing A Multitude Of Tongues In And Beyond The Sexual Education Curricula At Public High Schools, Carlo A. Pedrioli

Faculty Scholarship

When public high schools promote heterosexuality at the cost of denying sexual minority youth the opportunity to learn about minority sexualities, these schools contribute to the disastrous situation in which many sexual minority high school students find themselves. This approach, which many public high schools take, is unnecessarily destructive and warrants prompt change. Instead of helping to perpetuate many of the challenges that sexual minority students face in high school, public high schools can and need to help address these challenges. To establish the case for such a position, this article begins by presenting the plight of many sexual minority …

Cybersecurity, Identity Theft, And The Limits Of Tort Liability, Vincent R. Johnson Jan 2005

Cybersecurity, Identity Theft, And The Limits Of Tort Liability, Vincent R. Johnson

Faculty Articles

Tort law is the best vehicle for allocating the risks and spreading the costs of database intrusion. It can incentivize database possessors (“possessors”) and data subjects to minimize the harm associated with breaches of database security while also balancing each party’s interests. Life is built upon computerized databases and the information of those databases is subject to hackers and other cyber-threats, which can cause catastrophic damage. It is hard to identify hackers; however, a better object for recovery is likely the possessors who fail to prevent or reveal a security breach.

The law governing database possessors’ liability is far from …

Tale Of A Woman With Stomatitis And Response Of Health Care System, Waris Qidwai

Department of Family Medicine

A 55 year-old housewife presented to the Family Medicine Clinic due to recurrent oral ulcers for a year. She also had generalized itching, weakness, anorexia and abdominal distension after meals. She had visited several practitioners including family physicians and sub-specialists but a diagnosis was not reached. She was diagnosed to have Lichen Planus and Hepatitis C at family practice clinic. Since a health care system does not properly exist, patients seek treatment from sub-specialists without first consulting a primary care practitioner. This report identifies a failure in health care system and it is also recommended that all patients should be …

Mediation And Justice: What Standards Govern?, Joseph B. Stulberg Jan 2005

Mediation And Justice: What Standards Govern?, Joseph B. Stulberg

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

I find it challenging to write about mediation and justice for several perplexing reasons. The concept of justice is constitutionally ambiguous; trying to analyze it concretely is a challenging task for both writer and reader. Despite the concept's ambiguity, however, each of us can readily describe situations that instantly appall us for reasons that we intuitively identify as constituting acts or occasions of injustice. The irony then, and hence the challenge, is that we know that the concept of justice is an important phenomenon to address, yet we have difficulty saying something constructive or useful about it.

Shifting The Focus From The Myth Of "The Vanishing Trial" To Complex Conflict Management Systems, Or I Learned Almost Everything I Need To Know About Conflict Resolution From Marc Galanter, John Lande

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

To say that "The Vanishing Trial" is a myth is not to suggest that the facts or analysis in Professor Galanter's report are fictional or inaccurate. Indeed, he marshals a massive amount of data to show that the number of trials and the trial rates have been declining for the past four decades, particularly in the federal courts. The report documents an apparent paradox: the proportion of cases going to trial has dropped sharply during the past forty years despite substantial increases in many other legal indicators including the number of lawyers, the number of cases filed, and the amount …

A Correlation Between The Genes Responsible For Penicillin And Erythromycin Resistance In Streptococcus Pneumoniae And The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (Mic) Values: A Potential Approach For Molecular Detection Of Susceptibility, Mohd Nasir Mohd Desa, Kwai Lin Thong, Parasakthi Navaratnam Jan 2005

A Correlation Between The Genes Responsible For Penicillin And Erythromycin Resistance In Streptococcus Pneumoniae And The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (Mic) Values: A Potential Approach For Molecular Detection Of Susceptibility, Mohd Nasir Mohd Desa, Kwai Lin Thong, Parasakthi Navaratnam

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The correlation of pbp 2b restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns of fifty clinical isolates of Malaysian Streptococcus pneumoniae, as well as the distribution of determinant genes for erythromycin resistance; mefE and ermB, with the respective minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for penicillin and erythromycin (determined by agar dilution method) were examined. Strains with penicillin MIC of ≥ 0.5 μg/ml had unique pbp 2b RFLP patterns that were absent in the penicillinsusceptible strains. The prevalence of ermB, either alone or together with mefE, was frequently observed in strains with higher MIC values (> 8 μg/ml) whereas mefE alone was observed …

A Novel Dengue Fever (Df) And Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (Dhf) Analysis Using Artificial Neural Network (Ann), F. Ibrahim, M.N. Taib, W.A.B. Wan Abas, C.C. Guan, S. Sulaiman

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Dengue fever (DF) is an acute febrile viral disease frequently presented with headache, bone or joint and muscular pains, and rash. A significant percentage of DF patients develop a more severe form of disease, known as dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF). DHF is the complication of DF. The main pathophysiology of DHF is the development of plasma leakage from the capillary, resulting in haemoconcentration, ascites, and pleural effusion that may lead to shock following defervescence of fever. Therefore, accurate prediction of the day of defervescence of fever is critical for clinician to decide on patient management strategy. To date, no known …

Bacteria Fauna From The House Fly, Musca Domestica (L.), W.A. Nazni, B. Seleena, H.L. Lee, J. Jeffery, T.A.R. Rogayah, Mohd Sofian-Azirun

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The house fly, Musca domestica has long been considered a potential agent for disease transmission ever since its existence. The general truth of this assertion remains undisputed till the present day in spite of increasing awareness toward an improved sanitation and better hygiene. The habitual movement of house fly from filthy substrata such as human faeces, animal excreta, carcasses, garbage, etc. makes them ideal candidates for disease transmission such as cholera, shigellosis, salmonellosis and others when settling on food. Fly as a potential mechanical vector of pathogenic bacteria was elucidated in this study by examining flies from various breeding sites …
