Gender Differences In Student Learning: A Review Of The Literature From The Neuroscience And Psychology Perspectives, Noreen Ann Clark

All Graduate Projects

Literature from the fields of psychology and neuroscience were examined to establish what scientifically based information was available regarding gender differences. Myths of the past, psychological and neuroscientific perspectives, gender specific differences for students with genetic and metabolic-based exceptionalities, gender specific changes in behavior through maturation, and the educational implications for gender differences were included. The results indicated that children show developmental differences in expression of emotion, metacognition, and cognition, and the developmental differences are influenced by gender. The implications for educational practices are that curriculum, instruction, and assessment can be aligned to meet the unique need of both male …

"Beating The Odds": How Bi-Lingual Hispanic Students Work Through Adversity To Become High Achieving Students, Mark Hassinger Jan 2005

"Beating The Odds": How Bi-Lingual Hispanic Students Work Through Adversity To Become High Achieving Students, Mark Hassinger

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine characteristics of academically successful Hispanic students. Rather than ask ourselves why so many Hispanic students are failing, this study takes a more positive approach to this subject. Despite repeated failures and early academic difficulties, some Hispanic students continue to fight through the adversity. Some children have a positive attitude toward school although there are monumental barriers for these at-risk children. This study asks, "What piece of the puzzle do these students possess that the others do not?" In essence, this is an "asset-oriented" approach rather than a deficit-assessment approach. The purpose …

Second Language Acquisition Through Reading, Comprehensible Input, Limited Grammar, And Cultural Study: A Handbook For The Secondary Language Teacher, Judith A. Willis-Nicolai Jan 2005

Second Language Acquisition Through Reading, Comprehensible Input, Limited Grammar, And Cultural Study: A Handbook For The Secondary Language Teacher, Judith A. Willis-Nicolai

All Graduate Projects

Second language practitioners share the goal that their students reach communicative competence in the target language. Recent research findings regarding learning, however, have spawned a debate that has driven teachers to rethink the efficacy of the traditional practice of direct instruction of language usage. The Standards for Foreign Language Learning, as well as research that examines second language acquisition, support content-based instructional strategies that employ sustained language use, cultural infusion, and contextual grammar instruction in a constructivist classroom. This project reviews that research, then synthesizes and applies the findings of the research through the development of units that implement strategies …

Religious Commitment And Identity: Syndicat Northcrest V. Amselem, Richard Moon Jan 2005

Religious Commitment And Identity: Syndicat Northcrest V. Amselem, Richard Moon

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Professor Moon discusses the religious freedom case of Syndicat Northcrest v. Amselem which held that a condominium association’s refusal to permit Orthodox Jewish unit-owners to construct succahs on their balconies as part of the Jewish festival of Succot breached their freedom of religion. Although this case was decided under the Quebec Charter, Professor Moon believes that the principles directly apply to a claim under section 2(a) of the Charter. In holding that the condominium association had violated the appellants’ freedom of relgion, the majority judgment of Justice Iacobucci made two significant determinations concerning the scope of the freedom. First, Justice …

Taking One For The Team: Should Colleges Be Liable For Injuries Occurring During Student Participation In Club Sports?, Nick White

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Since the 1970s, colleges have not been liable for their adult students' actions or injuries, but courts have since delineated many exceptions to this rule. This Note will analyze the effect of college involvement in club sports as to whether it creates a duty for a college to protect its club athletes and those they might injure. This Note will also examine whether such a duty might exist in the future if the current trends in the law and college policy continue unchecked. Finally, this Note will address the effectiveness of the current defenses to liability and the effect of …

Cognitive Vulnerability In Anxiety, Emotional Dysregulation, And Bulimia Nervosa, Rachael Motley Jan 2005

Cognitive Vulnerability In Anxiety, Emotional Dysregulation, And Bulimia Nervosa, Rachael Motley

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Bulimia Nervosa (BN) is an eating disorder that is characterized by recurrent cycles of binge eating and compensatory behaviors (e.g. purging). Individuals suffering from BN usually report feeling anxious or depressed before the onset of their eating problems, and disordered eating may represent an attempt to cope with negative emotion. The anxiety associated with BN may arise from several pathways including body dissatisfaction, idealized images of thinness, and negative life events (Polivy & Herman, 2002). There are also other factors that contribute to the development of BN including difficulties with emotion regulation (e.g. alexithymia). We propose that certain individuals are …

Obligations Of State And Non-State Actors Regarding The Human Right To Water Under The South African Constitution, Anna R. Welch

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

The South African Constitution, founded on a number of values including “human dignity, the achievement of equality and the advancement of human rights and freedoms,” recognizes a vast array of social, economic, and cultural rights, including the right to have access to “sufficient water.” In ensuring this right, the government must take “reasonable legislative and other measures, within its available resources, to achieve the progressive realisation of each of these rights.” The Constitution places general limitations on the Bill of Rights under Section 36(1) only to the extent that “the limitation is reasonable and justifiable in an open and democratic …
