Continuous Asl Perfusion Fmri Investigation Of Higher Cognition: Quantification Of Tonic Cbf Changes During Sustained Attention And Working Memory Tasks, Junghoon Kim, John Whyte, Jiongjiong Wang, Hengyi Rao, Kathy Z. Tang, John A. Detre

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion fMRI is an emerging method in clinical neuroimaging. Its non-invasiveness, absence of low frequency noise, and ability to quantify the absolute level of cerebral blood flow (CBF) make the method ideal for longitudinal designs or low frequency paradigms. Despite the usefulness in the study of cognitive dysfunctions in clinical populations, perfusion activation studies to date have been conducted for simple sensorimotor paradigms or with single-slice acquisition, mainly due to technical challenges. Using our recently developed amplitude-modulated continuous ASL (CASL) perfusion fMRI protocol, we assessed the feasibility of a higher level cognitive activation study in twelve …

Natural History Of A Retreat-Building Midge, Pagastia Partica, In A Regulated Reach Of The Upper Colorado River, Jeremy B. Monroe, N. Leroy Poff, Richard A. Thorp

Western North American Naturalist

The retreat-building midge Pagastia prob. partica (Roback) is an abundant and conspicuous member of the benthic community of the upper Colorado River. We investigated the ecology and behavior of P. partica in this regulated stream using both qualitative observations and quantitative surveys. Our studies revealed that P. partica foraged primarily by grazing algae from their retreats and adjacent surfaces and exhibited territorial behavior toward other P. partica larvae. Pagastia partica were widely distributed among streambed surfaces but preferred those with higher biomasses of periphyton and swifter currents. The retreats of P. partica were composed largely of silk and colonized algae …

A Novel Cysteine-Rich Domain Of Sep15 Mediates The Interaction With Udp-Glucose:Glycoprotein Glucosyltransferase, Vyacheslav M. Labunskyy, Andrew D. Ferguson, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Yogarany Chelliah, Dolph L. Hatfield, Vadim N. Gladyshev Nov 2005

Selenium is an essential trace element with potent cancer prevention activity in mammals. The 15-kDa selenoprotein (Sep15) has been implicated in the chemopreventive effect of dietary selenium. Although the precise function of Sep15 remains elusive, Sep15 copurifies with UDP-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase (GT), an essential regulator of quality control mechanisms within the endoplasmic reticulum. Recent studies identified two GT and two Sep15 homologues in mammals. We characterize interactions between these protein families in this report. Sep15 and GT form a tight 1:1 complex, and these interactions are conserved between mammals and fruit flies. In mammalian cells, Sep15 co-immunoprecipitates with both GT isozymes. …

Parental Ethnotheories Of Child Development: Looking Beyond Independence And Individualism In American Belief Systems, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lisa Knoche, Vibeke Aukrust, Asiye Kumru, Misuk Kim

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Over the past several decades, the topic of child development in a cultural context has received a great deal of theoretical and empirical investigation. Investigators from the fields of indigenous and cultural psychology have argued that childhood is socially and historically constructed, rather than a universal process with a standard sequence of developmental stages or descriptions. As a result, many psychologists have become doubtful that any stage theory of cognitive or socialemotional development can be found to be valid for all times and places. In placing more theoretical emphasis on contextual processes, they define culture as a complex system of …
